6 potential cap casualties for Patriots in 2023

Who could be cut by the Patriots?

The New England Patriots’ roster is mostly where it will be for the 2023 season, barring any blockbuster moves after adding players through free agency, the draft and as undrafted free agents.

Now, we’re counting down the days for the exciting camp battles across many positions. It will turn up the heat this summer to find out who is ready to take on a larger role and make the 53-man roster.

So much is taken into consideration when teams make roster decisions at the end of camp. Sure, the talent matters, but at the end of the day, NFL teams take age, contract status, rookie readiness and so much more into roster decisions.

The process even leads to key veterans becoming cap casualties sometimes. All of the numbers today are provided by Over The Cap, but we’re going to explore six potential cap casualties for the Patriots in 2023.

Here’s Dolphins GM Chris Grier’s statement on DeVante Parker trade

“He has epitomized everything we desire in a player…”

Over the weekend, the Miami Dolphins made the decision to trade wide receiver DeVante Parker and a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for a 2023 third-round pick in return.

When the deal became official on Tuesday, the Dolphins released a statement from general manager Chris Grier that shared his feelings on Parker.

“From the day we drafted DeVante and he became a Miami Dolphin, he has epitomized everything we desire in a player – excellence on the field, a great teammate and a model citizen in the community. We are thankful for everything he has given this organization over the past [seven] seasons and wish him continued success. He will always be an important piece of our franchise history.”

The Dolphins have moved on with a trio of wide receivers (Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Cedrick Wilson Jr.) that they believe can help take this team to the next level. However, they won’t forget what Parker brought the team since he was selected in the first round of the 2015 draft.

DeVante Parker says goodbye to the Dolphins and Miami

The Dolphins will now have to face him twice a year.

On Saturday, the Miami Dolphins added another transaction to their long list of moves they’ve made this offseason, as they opted to trade wide receiver DeVante Parker, along with a fifth-round pick, to the New England Patriots for a 2023 third-round selection.

Miami drafted Parker in the first round of the 2015 draft and despite dealing with injuries during his seven seasons with the Dolphins, Parker became one of the most productive wideouts in franchise history. He finishes his tenure having recorded the eighth-most receptions (338), sixth-most receiving yards (4,727) and eighth-most receiving touchdowns (24).

Late Saturday, Parker took to Instagram to bid farewell to the team, city, fans and media that brought him into the NFL.

Analysis of the Dolphins trading DeVante Parker to the Patriots

What does this trade mean for Miami going forward?

The Miami Dolphins continued their active offseason on Saturday, as they traded wide receiver DeVante Parker and a 2022 fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for a 2023 third-round pick.

Miami now has just four draft picks in this upcoming draft – a third, fourth and two seventh-round selections. However, in 2023, they currently have two picks in the first and third rounds.

This move was likely to happen at some point after the Dolphins went out and gave former Dallas Cowboys wideout Cedrick Wilson Jr. a three-year contract worth up to $23.55 million and traded for Tyreek Hill. The hiring of Mike McDaniel could’ve been a sign that Parker’s days were limited as well, as the former Louisville Cardinal might’ve had the hardest time finding a role in his offense.

If Parker stayed in Miami for 2022, he likely would’ve been the fourth receiver and perhaps the sixth pass catcher on an offense that has upgraded a lot in recent weeks.

At this point, the Dolphins have nine receivers on the roster, including Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Wilson Jr., Preston Williams, Trent Sherfield, River Cracraft, Lynn Bowden Jr., DeVonte Dedmon and Cody Core. By the time the season starts, Miami will likely opt for five or six at the position.

By moving on from Parker, the Dolphins also get the benefit of saving some cap space, as they clear $3.34 million this season. They also clear all of Parker’s $9 million that was supposed to be on the books in 2023. This makes it easier to manage some of the deals that are supposed to jump from 2022 to 2023 even though the league’s salary cap is expected to continue rising.

Parker ends his tenure with the Dolphins as one of the most productive receivers in team history. He had the eighth-most receptions (338), sixth-most receiving yards (4,727) and eighth-most touchdowns (24). Now, unfortunately, Miami will have to see him with extra motivation twice a year when they play New England.

Dolphins to trade WR DeVante Parker to Patriots

There was a feeling that a move like this was coming.

The Miami Dolphins have done a ton of work this offseasom to improve their roster for the 2022 season.

With all of these moves, it was likely that there would have to be some players that were shipped out, and that feeling has come to fruition.

On Saturday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dolphins are trading wide receiver DeVante Parker to the New England Patriots. The Dolphins are also sending a 2022 fifth-round pick to New England, and they’ll receive a 2023 third-round pick in return.

The Dolphins will save $3.34 million in cap space and solidify newly signed Cedrick Wilson Jr. as the third wideout in Miami’s offense.

In the 2023 draft, the Dolphins are set to have multiple picks in the first and third rounds.

GM Chris Grier says teams have called about two Dolphins

The Dolphins could trade some players to make back some of their lost draft capital.

General manager Chris Grier and the rest of the Miami Dolphins decision-makers have done a lot to improve their roster after the team missed the postseason for the fifth year in a row.

They’ve added a number of players in free agency who will have varying levels of contributions, including Terron Armstead, Connor Williams, Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds, Alec Ingold, Cedrick Wilson Jr., and Keion Crossen. They also took a swing in the trade market, sending five picks to the Kansas City Chiefs for wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

With that trade leaving Miami with the fewest picks in this year’s draft and some players whose roles could shrink in 2022, the Dolphins have been approached by a number of teams regarding trades.

According to Grier at the owners’ meetings on Monday, they’ve received calls on wide receiver DeVante Parker and center Michael Deiter.

As NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe mentions in his tweet, the wide receiver room is getting a bit more crowded with Hill and Wilson’s arrivals. If everything goes right Parker is the third or fourth option in the receiver room alone. And, while his contract isn’t outrageous, it’s a bit high for a guy who could be a team’s fifth or sixth pass-catcher.

Deiter’s name being mentioned is a little surprising. He’s been decent in the middle of the line when he’s been healthy, but he dealt with multiple injuries last year that cost him a significant amount of time. If the Dolphins are going to look to upgrade in the draft, and there’s a strong possibility that they do so, they might consider those proposals.

What could the Dolphins get in a Devante Parker trade

A trade would save the team $3.34 million in 2022.

In 2021, the Miami Dolphins’ group of pass-catchers left something to be desired, as Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki were really the only guys consistently performing.

DeVante Parker, who has been with the Dolphins for seven seasons, played in just 10 games due to injuries, and he was limited when he was on the field.

Now, with Miami trading for Tyreek Hill and signing guys like Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Trent Sherfield, many are wondering whether or not Parker is destined to be moved before the start of the season.

We’ve already seen the Dolphins make a couple of moves, like converting Byron Jones’ salary to a bonus and restructuring Clayton Fejedelem to create cap space. Moving on from Parker would save the Dolphins $3.34 million this season and would obviously completely take him off their books for 2023 when he was expected to account for a $9 million cap hit.

A number of trades have been made this offseason for wide receivers. This offseason alone, the Kansas City Chiefs traded Hill, the Los Angeles Rams traded Robert Woods, the Green Bay Packers traded Davante Adams, and the Dallas Cowboys traded Amari Cooper.

These may give us an idea of what Parker would be worth in a trade.

Woods is probably the closest of these wide receivers to Parker’s talent, and he was traded for a sixth-round pick. However, it’s important to note that Woods is set to make more this season and is coming off of a torn ACL.

With that being said, Woods has been more productive than Parker, and it’s not like Parker hasn’t had injury concerns of his own.

At this point, it feels like Parker would be worth more but not a whole lot more. Miami may be able to get a mid-round pick for the wideout. If they got a third, they’d probably be lucky. It feels more likely that they could receive a fourth or fifth-round selection.

Could the Eagles have interest in acquiring Dolphins WR DeVante Parker?

With Tyreek Hill headed to #Miami, could the #Eagles have interest in acquiring #Dolphins WR #DeVanteParker?

Tyreek Hill is now a member of the Miami Dolphins, after the Chiefs traded the six time Pro Bowl receiver to the AFC East.

With the move, there’s been some discussions about the Eagles potentially having interest in Dolphins veteran wide receiver DeVante Parker according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Parker, 29, was the No. 14 pick in the draft in 2015 out of Louisville and he’s spent the first seven years of his career in Miami, and the Dolphins would save over $3.34 million in cap space if they trade or release Parker before June 1.

His career best season came in 2019, when he totaled 72 receptions, 1,2020 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns.
