The Detroit Red Wings (32-29-6) take on the Washington Capitals (44-15-8) Tuesday. Puck drop from Capital One Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Red Wings vs. Capitals odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Tied 1-1 with each team winning on home ice

The Wings are starting to break their cold spell after a 3-0 shutout over the Vegas Golden Knights Sunday. LW Lucas Raymond scored his 23rd goal of the year, and G Petr Mrazek stopped all 18 fired his way for Detroit, which won as a +109 home underdog with the Under (6.5) hitting. The Wings, who sit 2 points out of a Wild Card spot, have won 2 of 3 after losing 6 straight.

The Capitals remain firmly atop the Eastern Conference with 96 points, which is 10 more than the second-place Carolina Hurricanes. Washington smoked the San Jose Sharks 5-1 Saturday, covering as a -240 road favorite with the total (6) pushing. LW Alex Ovechkin scored his 34th goal of the season and 887th of his career to pull within 7 of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals.

From BetMGM Sportsbook:

Ovechkin goal:
Anytime goal -110; First goal: +800, Last goal: +750

Ovechkin to top Gretzky with his 895th goal this season:
Yes: -225, No: +180

Red Wings at Capitals projected goalies

Petr Mrazek (12-20-2, 3.33 GAA, .892 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Logan Thompson (29-4-5, 2.32 GAA, .916 SV%, 2 SO)

Mrazek has ran as the top goalie since he was acquired from Chicago earlier this month, going 2-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .920 SV% in 3 games. This has pushed G Cam Talbot to the bench, and Mrazek has been confirmed for this one. Mrazek faced the Caps once last season in a 4-1 road loss, stopping 22 of 26 shots.

Thompson has rebounded in March from a disastrous February. He’s 4-1-0 with a 2.57 GAA and .894 SV% in 5 March starts. He has been hit-or-miss, though, as you can tell from that shoddy SV%. He was in goal for a 5-2 home win against Detroit March 7, allowing 2 goals on 19 shots.

Red Wings at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 4, Red Wings 3

Moneyline

Detroit (+140) needs this game a lot more than Washington (-165), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Wings victory here. They’re just a bad road team against a great home team.

BET CAPITALS (-165).

Puck line/Against the spread

I would consider Detroit +1.5 here, but -170 is too expensive for me.

Instead, I’ll take ALEX OVECHKIN ANYTIME GOAL (-110). Ovi finished with 3 shots but didn’t score on Mrazek when the Caps faced the then-Blackhawks goalie last season. However, Ovechkin had a hat trick against Mrazek in a 2022-23 meeting with the Blackhawks — a 7-3 Capitals rout.

FYI: There’s a 20% NHL Odds boost token in some BetMGM accounts that takes this -110 to +109.

Over/Under

I’ll take OVER 6 (-120), but there is some push potential. Both teams are 4-4-2 O/U in their last 10. I’m basing this on Washington’s ability to score 4 goals to push this Over. The Caps have scored 4+ in 4 of 5 games.

Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (30-26-6) take on the Washington Capitals (40-14-8) Friday. Puck drop from Capital One Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET. (ESPN+) Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Red Wings vs. Capitals odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: The Red Wings lead 1-0 after a 4-2 home win Dec. 29.

The Wings were clipped by the Utah Hockey Club Thursday by a 4-2 final. C Dylan Larkin scored his 25th goal as the Red Wings lost their fourth in a row. They are now on the outside looking in for the playoffs, but are within a point of the final Wild Card and 2 points from the top Wild Card spot.

The Caps took down the New York Rangers on the road 3-2 in overtime Wednesday. After a 3-game losing streak, they’ve won 2 in a row via OT and shutout. LW Alex Ovechkin pulled within 9 of The Great One with his 32nd goal of the season and 885th of his career. Ovechkin scored in the 4-2 loss to Detroit and has scored 25 goals in 36 career games against the Red Wings. He’s at -105 to score on Friday, and at +600 to score twice.

Red Wings at Capitals projected goalies

Cam Talbot (17-13-3, 2.92 GAA, .903 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Logan Thompson (26-4-5, 2.32 GAA, .918 SV%, 2 SO)

Talbot allowed 4 goals on 20 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday. He has allowed 4 goals in 4 of his last 5 starts. He went 0-2-0 with a 3.09 GAA and .878 SV% against the Caps in 2 starts against them last year.

Thompson allowed 4 goals, but prevailed in a 5-4 shootout win over the Ottawa Senators Monday. He stopped 33 of 37. After an amazing first few months, he has really come down to Earth. He went 2-1-2 with a 3.59 GAA and .878 SV% last month. He lost to the Wings 5-2 last year and stopped 24 of 28 shots.

Red Wings at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Capitals 4, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The Caps are 19-7-6 at home, and the Wings are on a back-to-back on the road. The Caps are the clear choice here, but -220 is too expensive.

Instead, let’s go with ALEX OVECHKIN OVER 3.5 SHOTS (-145). He has 4+ shots in 7 of 8 games.

Puck line/Against the spread

We’re going to buck some trends here, but the only play on the PL is the CAPITALS -1.5 (+115). Detroit has won 2 of the last 4 meetings here, and the other 2 were 1-goal Caps wins. This version of the Red Wings is reeling, though, and flew halfway across the country overnight. I’m backing Ovi, Thompson and the Caps by 2.

Over/Under

The Caps are 7-3 O/U in their last 10 games, but none of those totals were as high as 6.5. The Wings are 6-3-1 O/U in their last 10, and only 1 of those were 6.5. The Over has cashed in 4 of the last 10 meetings between the teams, and we saw 7+ goals in just 3. This one falls short.

I’ll take the UNDER 6.5 (-120).

Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (26-21-8) wrap up a 5-game road trip against the Washington Capitals (28-24-6) Tuesday at Capital One Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Capitals odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings had a 5-game win streak snapped at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on Saturday night, as the Kraken doubled them up 4-2. The Over is 4-0-1 across the last 5 games for Detroit.

The Capitals are on a 4-game skid, including a 4-1 setback outdoors against the Carolina Hurricanes over the weekend in an NHL Stadium Series game. Washington has scored a total of 9 goals across the last 5 games, cashing the Under in 4 of those contests.

Washington’s Alex Ovechkin remains away from the team in Russia, as he mourns the death of his father, although he might be back later this week. He is doubtful for Tuesday’s game, however.

Tom Wilson was able to return from injury Saturday in Raleigh, and John Carlson (face) and Nic Dowd (lower body) are nearing a return, as Washington gets a little healthier.

Red Wings at Capitals projected goalies

Ville Husso (21-13-5, 2.95 GAA, .904 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Darcy Kuemper (16-17-4, 2.67 GAA, .914 SV%, 5 SO)

Husso allowed 4 goals on just 26 shots last time out in Seattle, snapping a personal 4-game winning streak. He has allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of his last 6 starts in February, although he is 4-2-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .919 SV% this month.

Husso coughed up 4 goals on 42 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss in Washington  on Dec. 19, and he stopped 33 of 34 shots in a 3-1 win against the Capitals in Detroit on Nov. 3.

Kuemper was on the short end of a 4-1 loss in Raleigh in the outdoor game, stopping 31 of 35 shots. He is a dismal 1-3-0 with a 3.05 GAA and .906 SV% in 4 February outings.

Kuemper lost his only start against the Red Wings, turning aside 23 of 25 shots in a hard-luck 3-1 loss on Nov. 3.

Red Wings at Capitals picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 4, Capitals 3

Moneyline

The RED WINGS (+135) are a decent play as moderate underdogs, as the Capitals (-155) continue to struggle lighting the lamp.

The Wings have picked up 5 wins in the last 6 games overall, while the Caps have won just once in the last 6 games, while dropping 5 straight when playing on 2 days of rest.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Red Wings +1.5 (-190) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return if you require a little bit of insurance. That’s just too expensive, so if you like Detroit, just take advantage of Washington’s injuries and absences, and play it straight up instead.

PASS.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (+105) is the lean at plus money.

Detroit has cashed the Over at a 4-0-1 clip in the last 5 games overall, while going 3-0-1 in the last 4 games on the road.

For Washington, it has had trouble scoring goals, but facing Husso could be the elixir to cure its scoring ills. Plus, the Caps have cashed the Over at an 8-2-2 clip in the last 12 games inside the Atlantic Division.

The Over is also 12-5-1 in the last 18 meetings at Capital One Arena.
