Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (2-0-1) tangle with the Chicago Blackhawks (1-2-0) Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Blackhawks odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Wings secured a point Monday with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings, and if they sneak into the playoffs, it will be a credit to C Dylan Larkin. Larkin foiled a breakaway attempt when he raced to catch a Kings player and dove, avoided tripping him, and steered the puck away from the empty net. The Red Wings tied the game at 4 soon after.

Chicago is coming off a 5-2 dispatching of the San Jose Sharks for its first win of the season. The Blackhawks suffered 1-0 and 5-2 losses to Vegas and Colorado beforehand.

Red Wings at Blackhawks projected goalies

Ville Husso (1-0-1, 2.50 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Petr Mrazek (1-1-0, 3.50 GAA, .885 SV%, 0 SO)

Husso stopped all 29 shots the Montreal Canadiens fired at him in the season opener last Friday, but he allowed 5 goals in the overtime loss to L.A. Monday. He beat the Blackhawks last season while with the St. Louis Blues and only saw 16 shots, stopping 15 of them.

Mrazek was solid in the win over the Sharks, stopping 24 of 26 shots fired his way. He gave up 5 goals to Colorado Oct. 12, but many goaltenders can say that. Mrazek was miraculously 3-0 against Detroit last year as he gave up 10 goals with a 4.44 GAA and a .865 SV%.

Red Wings at Blackhawks picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 2

Moneyline

Detroit is a short ‘dog on the road, but it has been playing like a playoff contender that just needs to keep good health to qualify. The Wings are scoring 4 goals per game, and the same should hold true Friday, Take the RED WINGS (-120) and RED WINGS OVER 3.5 TOTAL GOALS IN REGULATION (+127).

Puck line/Against the spread

Both of Detroit’s wins this season have been by multiple goals. The books haven’t caught on to how good they actually are right now. Take the RED WINGS -1.5 (+195) to nearly double your stake.

Over/Under

Both teams are 2-1-0 O/U this season, but 7 is a big number. This could truly go either way, and I’d rather stay away and roll with the 3 aforementioned options.

Red Wings at Blackhawks projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (0-1-1, 3.55 GAA, .890 SV%) vs. Kevin Lankinen (0-1-1, 2.91 GAA, .884 SV%)

Nedeljkovic has stopped 32 of the last 34 shots in his last two appearances. That includes stopping all six shots he faced in a relief performance at the Montreal Canadiens Saturday.

Lankinen draws a second start in a row with No. 1 Marc-Andre Fleury struggling at the outset of the season. The second-year netminder allowed 3 goals in Thursday’s 4-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Red Wings at Blackhawks odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 3

Money line

Detroit outshot its opponents in both recent losses (Thursday, Saturday), and its expected-goals metrics thus far are impressive. Chicago was already dealing with blue-line injuries, and has been just out of whack all the way around. Chicago has had trouble creating quality looks from the slot.

BACK THE RED WINGS (+135).

Against the spread

PASS. Shoot for the plus payout on the money line.

Over/Under

Detroit’s early-season metrics make it an Over green light for now. Coming off one goal in its last two games helps the price here.

Both power plays have looked capable in the early going. In 5-on-5 play, both sides rank in the NHL’s bottom 10 in shooting percentage. More twine-finders are out there for both.

TAKE THE OVER 5.5 (-130).
