Warriors at Pistons: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Warriors 122, Pistons 119

Money line (ML)

The Warriors should win this game after getting on track with a 129-128 win over the Chicago Bulls Sunday. However, they’re not worth a money line bet at the high -190 price tag.

The PISTONS (+155) are tempting for a small wager in hopes of the upset. All three of their games have been played within a 10-point margin while the Warriors suffered blowout losses at the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks to start the season, albeit, those were both much tougher tests.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PISTONS +4.5 (-110) are a stronger play on the spread against a Warriors team that barely snuck past the Bulls and needed a fourth-quarter comeback to do so. PF Blake Griffin and PG Derrick Rose should return to the lineup after sitting out the first half of Detroit’s back-to-back. The Pistons took a 128-120 loss at the Atlanta Hawks Monday.

Having the two stars return to the lineup will help negate the Warriors’ single-day rest advantage. Green’s continued absence opens up a big advantage for Griffin in the paint.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 225.5 (-115) is the strongest bet for this game. Both teams are 2-1 against the Over/Under with Golden State topping projections by 7.5 points per game and Detroit doing so by 14.8 PPG. They’re both allowing more than 120 PPG to their opponents.

Pistons at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 127, Pistons 117

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. Detroit would be an enticing underdog if Blake Griffin or Derrick Rose were in the lineup. The Hawks are a young team without a winning pedigree. I’d like to fade them as often as possible, but it’s too tough to land that plane, so to speak, in this Pistons-Hawks game.

Against the spread (ATS)

I lean Pistons 10.5 (-115) because my instinct is to bet against the Hawks until they prove it.

However, I’ll concede that Atlanta’s 2-0 record is impressive and, despite not playing anyone that good, the Hawks have covered and won by double-digits in both of their games (a 124-104 win vs. the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 23 and a 122-112 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies this past Sunday).

Officially, I’ll PASS on the spread and load up on the total.

Over/Under (O/U)

Defense doesn’t matter in today’s NBA, and it probably matters even less for a team like the Hawks. Yes, the Pistons are missing notable talent – guys who’ve made multiple All-Star games in Blake and D-Rose – but the next guys up can get buckets against professional basketball players.

The major differences in the starters compared to the backups are making winning plays in the fourth quarter and sustainable production. You cannot just add Blake and D-Rose’s numbers together, subtract it from Detroit’s team points per game average and assume you figured it out. The Pistons probably aren’t scoring 80 points because they are without a couple of key contributors.

The Pistons-Hawks total has come down from a 226.5-point opener mostly because of Detroit’s injury news, and I disagree with that line movement. Even if the Pistons struggle offensively, the Hawks have the firepower with Trae Young and Co. to score 125-plus any given night.

GIMME OVER 223.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Cavaliers at Pistons: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Cavaliers 111, Pistons 109

Money line (ML)

The CAVALIERS (+110) opened with an impressive home win over the Charlotte Hornets. Now they look to duplicate that success with a quick jump over Lake Erie for their first road game of the season. The Pistons (-135) were dumped by 10 in the opener Wednesday in Minnesota. They actually led 85-80 heading into the fourth quarter but were outscored 31-16. We’ll see if they have a problem finishing in this one, too.

Against the spread (ATS)

The CAVALIERS +2.5 (-115) are worth a play in their first road game of the season. Cleveland is 6-2 ATS in its past eight road games dating back to last season, and they’re 4-1 ATS in the previous five matchups with the Pistons. C Andre Drummond returns to his old stomping grounds, too, trying to get his new team to 2-0 on the young season. The big opened with his usual double-double, going for 14 points and 14 rebounds in just over 27 minutes.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 215.5 (-110) is a strong play. The Cavs cruised to an Over result in their 121-114 win over the Hornets, while the Pistons hit the Under in their opening game road loss. More importantly, look to the series trends, which each point to the Over. The Over is 4-1 in the past five meetings at LCA, and 7-0 in the previous seven meetings overall in this series.

Pistons at Timberwolves: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pistons 114, Timberwolves 112

Money line (ML)

The PISTONS (+190) are the play to nearly double your investment with an upset road win. The Timberwolves are getting far too much respect after picking No. 1 in the 2020 NBA Draft. They went just 19-45 and allowed a Western Conference-high 117.5 points per game with a minus-4.2 point differential. G Anthony Edwards won’t be correcting the Wolves’ many deficiencies in his regular-season NBA debut.

Detroit was a capable defensive club last season and is only a year removed from a postseason trip. The Pistons made three of the first 19 picks in the draft and added depth throughout the roster in free agency. PF Blake Griffin returns from injury and will be the best player on the floor Wednesday.

Back the underdogs from Detroit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Liking Detroit to win outright at plus-money, we need to take the PISTONS +5.5 (-110) with some insurance on the spread. The roster underwent a considerable offseason overhaul and may struggle with consistency, particularly late in games.

The Wolves are +20000 to win the 2020-21 NBA championship and the Pistons are +50000. We’ll chase the value of the road upset on the money line, but it’d be foolish to not back it with an ATS bet with the unpredictability that comes with a matchup between expected cellar dwellers.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean ever so slightly toward the OVER 224.5 (-115). The Wolves did little to improve defensively this offseason and Edwards should be looking to fill the stat sheet nightly in a possible Rookie of the Year campaign. The Wolves don’t have the personnel to contain Griffin inside and PG D’Angelo Russell has a considerable advantage over the Detroit backcourt.
