The Houston Rockets (4-9) are in the Motor City Friday for a 7 p.m. ET game against the Detroit Pistons (3-11) at Little Caesars Arena. Below, we analyze the Rockets-Pistons NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

After winning their first game without G James Harden, the Rockets have lost three straight (0-3 against the spread). The Rockets’ lack of continuity under the first-year head coach Stephen Silas is evident by their last-place ranking in assist to turnover ratio over the past four games. One of the players acquired in the Harden deal—SG Victor Oladipo—is averaging 27 points, 5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in his two games with Houston.

The Pistons choked away a 14-point lead with 5:03 remaining—in which they had a 98.9% win probability according to ESPN—to lose to the Atlanta Hawks 123-115 in overtime as 4.5-point road underdogs. Detroit was massively out-rebounded and Atlanta shot twice as many free throws.

The last time these two teams met was Dec. 14, 2019. Rockets C Christian Wood was coming off the bench for the Pistons at the time and no one aside from PF Blake Griffin in Detroit’s current starting lineup is still with the team. Houston hasn’t covered in its last six games vs. Detroit.

PASS ON THE Money line.

I’m taking Detroit to cover the spread and regardless of what I say below, there’s no way I’m going to lay more than -120 on a 3-11 Pistons team. Houston has more talent but is just a mess offensively because of its lack of a point guard.

Against the spread (ATS)

Detroit’s defense creates a lot of havoc—second in defensive turnover percentage—while Houston is reckless with the ball (26th in offensive turnover percentage). Also, the Pistons score the fourth-most points off of turnovers per game and the Rockets are 26th in points off of turnovers allowed per game.

Furthermore, the revenge game for Wood is out of the question since he’s sidelined with an ankle injury. Even without the revenge angle, Wood is averaging 23.5 points per game, which is technically third on the team but behind Harden and Oladipo. Wood’s absence is major since it forces C DeMarcus Cousins into the starting lineup.

TAKE PISTONS -2.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Neither one of these teams can play defense and there’s a bunch of familiar faces on both sides. It’s going to be like a throwback game from the mid-2010s.

I see this game going OVER 214.5 (-115) and being an oddly fun game to watch. Outside of Pistons SF Jerami Grant and, sometimes C Mason Plumlee, no one is playing defense out there.

Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Pistons (3-10) are in the Big Peach Wednesday to play the Atlanta Hawks (6-7) at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Pistons-Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Detroit has done an awesome job cashing tickets for point-spread but has not done such a great job winning any of these games. Detroit is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games. The push was in its previous outing—a 113-107 loss to the Miami Heat as a 6-point road underdog.

The Pistons’ big offseason acquisition, SF Jerami Grant, is showing to be a worthwhile investment. He is leading the Pistons in scoring (24.9 points per game) on .467/.389/.863 shooting and is second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Hawks have struggled to win outright or ATS coming into Wednesday’s game. Atlanta is just 3-7 in its last 10 games (4-6 ATS) but enters off a 108-97 home win as a 7-point favorite against the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday.

What’s surprising so far about the Hawks is how poorly they are shooting from the field and that Atlanta has relied on its defense. The Hawks are third in opponent’s effective field goal percentage and second in rebounds per game.

The Pistons lost their only meeting with the Hawks this season (128-120 in Atlanta) but covered as 10.5-point underdogs as part of a three-game ATS winning streak vs. Atlanta. Last season, Detroit pummeled the Hawks by 25 and 33 points in the final two meetings and won the 2019-20 season series 2-1.

Despite Atlanta’s startling year over year improvement in defense, the Hawks didn’t defend the Pistons well in their first meeting this season and Detroit has scored at least 120 points in its last three games vs. Atlanta.

Detroit put up 120 earlier this season even without PG Derrick Rose (team leader in assists per game and second in points per game) and PF Blake Griffin.

Since Detroit is healthier this time, the Hawks are less healthy and I plan on betting Detroit to cover, I lean PISTONS (+165) for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Atlanta’s end-of-game performances make the Hawks a tough team to back. The Hawks have the third-lowest net clutch rating and play at the second-fastest pace in the clutch. Atlanta loses its composure in the final minutes.

Detroit has its own issues with clutch rating and offensive efficiency but, to the Pistons’ credit, they rank second in defensive turnover percentage so they should capitalize on Atlanta’s miscues.

I’m on PISTONS +4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN Under 219.5 (-110) but officially I’ll PASS ON THE TOTAL. The market is hammering the Under mostly because of Atlanta’s 2-11 O/U record but I’ve already made my case as to why Detroit’s offense could have some success in this one, which correlates with my Pistons’ money line and spread bets.

The PISTONS (+195) are a good value on the road against the Heat (-250), who will again be without Bradley and Butler, as they’re under quarantine due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Herro might be able to play, but Leonard has also been ruled out, so essentially Miami will run it back with a similar group that lost 120-100 in the first game of the double dip on Saturday.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PISTONS +6.5 (-110) are a nice play if you’re just not feeling Detroit straight up for a second consecutive win on the road in South Florida. The Pistons overall record stinks, to be honest, but they have been cover kings. They’re 3-1 ATS across the past four outings, and 6-2 ATS across the past eight contests. Miami has been reeling with short benches lately, and they’re just 1-4 SU/ATS across the past five.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 218.5 (-110) is a good play. The Over hit in Saturday’s game, barely, with a total of 220 points against a number of 217.5. Expect a similar result on Monday, as it won’t be a run-and-gun game, which easily cashes a ticket, but it certainly won’t be a defensive slog, either, and Miami’s D will suffer with Jimmy Buckets still on the mend.

The HEAT (-200) could have several key players return to the lineup Saturday and offering plenty of value to beat a lowly Pistons squad. Detroit hasn’t won a road game and three of its last four losses were all by at least 10 points.

Miami had just eight players for both games against the Sixers and nearly pulled the upset in Game 1. F Duncan Robinson had a team-high 22 points last time out.

The Pistons are last in the NBA in field-goal percentage (41.5%) and 25th in 3-point percentage (34.0%). Miami hit on over 46% of its field-goal attempts in both games against Philadelphia.

Even short-handed, the reigning Eastern Conference champs can top the Pistons.

Against the spread (ATS)

Get better value on the HEAT -5.5 (+100) to win by at least 6 points on a modest spread. The past four Pistons’ losses were by margins of 9 or more points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 217.5 (-105). The Heat put up 134 points in their first game against a much stronger Sixers defense. Detroit is 29th in the Association while allowing opponents to post an effective field-goal percentage of 57.8%.

The Bucks (-550) will cost you more than five times your potential return, and that’s just not worth the tremendous risk, even if the Pistons (+400) are pretty terrible. PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

Money line (ML)

The Jazz (-350) have been a little Jekyll and Hyde lately. They spanked Milwaukee at FiServ Forum by a 131-118 score last time out, winning outright as 5.5-point underdogs. Then they lost 112-100 in New York as 7.5-point favorites, and were worked over by Brooklyn 130-96 on Jan. 5 as 4.5-point favorites. Before that they routed San Antonio as 5.5-point favorites, and topped the Clippers as 3.5-point underdogs. Before that was a loss on New Year’s Eve as four-point favorites at home to Phoenix by 11.

You never know what you’re going to get with the Jazz, so wins that should be slam-dunk plays aren’t, and when they’re an underdog they have been showing out. Those are the types of teams you steer far away from when playing money lines, unless you also enjoy picking high-risk stocks, eating day-old gas station sushi and playing Russian Roulette on occasion. I like none of those things. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PISTONS +7.5 (+100) are the safe play on their home floor catching more than three buckets. While they have just two victories in nine games, they have covered four of the past five, including three straight at LCA. And Detroit is relatively healthy, too, so that makes them an attractive play. Plus, Utah has taken it on the chin as a favorite over the past season or so, going 6-23-2 ATS in the past 31 as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 217.5 (-110) has cashed in four of Utah’s past five on the road, and 14 of the previous 18 as a road favorite. The Over is also 24-10 in Detroit’s past 34 on their home floor, including 11-5 in the past 16 as a home ‘dog. Yes, the series trends point to the Under, but these teams meet twice per year, and personnel has dramatically changed over the past 11 meetings, so a 9-2 Under run in the series can mostly be discounted.

The Suns are the No.1 team in the Western Conference and, including their eight games in the bubble last year, have won 14 of their last 16. The Pistons have the worst record in the NBA and have lost three in a row. Previous Suns teams would probably lose this game but they have been good about taking care of business.

Take the SUNS (-350).

Against the spread (ATS)

The Suns are tied with the league’s best record against the spread at 6-2 and have been covering the spread by an average of 7.2 points per game, the second-highest average in the league. They failed to cover in only one game in which they were favored (4-1).

Detroit is 4-4 ATS but beats the spread by only 0.2 points per game. They give up a lot of points and have the fifth-worst scoring defense in the league, at 119.1 points allowed per game, while the Suns have the league’s No. 1 scoring defense.

Take the SUNS -7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Suns have the second-lowest Over percentage in the league at 25% but the total went Over in their last two games. The last three games for the Pistons have gone Over and so have five of their seven games. That is usually the result of their opponents.

Phoenix will score a lot and allow near their average but that will be enough to go OVER 216.5 (-115).

Pistons at Bucks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Much like on Monday night, the Bucks are a huge money line favorite in this game and it’s not hard to see why. They continue to have one of the best offenses in the NBA and can score 130 points on any given night. On defense, they are long and athletic and don’t make many mistakes.

For a Pistons’ team to upset them on the road would take a ton of luck and some hot shooting. But don’t anticipate that happening. Instead, PASS in favor of the point spread as there just isn’t enough value on the money line.

Against the spread (ATS)

The BUCKS -12.5 (-110) are double-digit favorites over the Pistons on Wednesday. They failed to cover the spread in their previous meeting, only winning by 10 points. But given that this line has dropped from 15.5 to 13.5 in just two days, don’t be surprised if this is the game Milwaukee covers. It’s another home game for them and they are clearly the better roster. We like for this game to be a blowout and for the Bucks to win by nearly 20 points.

Over/Under (O/U)

Milwaukee will have to do most of the heavy lifting (once again) in this game in order for the OVER 225.5 (-110), but don’t expect that to be any problem. The Bucks currently have the No. 1 ranked scoring offense and they lead the league in FG percentage and three-point percentage. This is an offensive juggernaut and that’s why the Over is a strong bet once again in this meeting.

You only need to go back to New Year’s Day to know why you don’t lay big money on a favorite. The Celtics (-350) lost 96-93 to the Pistons (+260), as Detroit picked up its first win. You can’t risk more than three times your potential return on the .500 C’s right now. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

CELTICS -7.5 (-120) should be able to bounce back and top the Pistons +7.5 (+100), but it’s a good idea to go lightly. Despite Friday’s non-cover, the C’s are still 6-2 ATS in the previous eight meetings in the Motor City.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 213.5 (-110) might be the best play on the board. The Over was never a possibility on New Year’s Day when these teams met, and the Under is now 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings in Detroit. Keep thumping the Under when these teams hook up until further notice.
