Texans-Lions Week 10: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

Here’s the snap count total from the Houston Texans’ 26-23 loss against the Detroit Lions at NRG Stadium on Sunday Night Football.

There are bad losses. There are heartbreaking ones that take forever to respond from

Then, there’s the inexcusable second-half debacle that led to a 26-23 Houston Texans loss at home against the Detroit Lions on ‘Sunday Night Football’ at NRG Stadium.

The Texans led by 16 at halftime. They forced five interceptions on Jared Goff and held the offense to six first downs. C.J. Stroud found John Metchie for his first career touchdown and the vibes were great.

Then came the second half. Then came the wrong side of history.

“Definitely should have won this game,” Stroud said. “My job is to lead the offense to score points, and I didn’t do that today.

“We really should have put them away after the first half. It’s really on the offense.”

The Texans (6-4) became the second team since 1933 to lose a game in which they caught five interceptions and led by at least 15. Previously, teams were 373-1-1 when leading by at least 15 and snagging five interceptions.

Second-half woes remain a concern. Houston now is going on eight quarters without a second-half touchdown, dating back to Week 6’s win over the struggling New England Patriots. They’ve also been outscored 141-82 over the past 10 outings in 2024, ranking 31st in the league.

Against Detroit the Texans scored zero points in the final 30 minutes and matched Goff’s two turnovers with Stroud picks, fueling the Lions’ comeback.

Here’s the snap count from Sunday night’s debacle:

Offensive snaps: 68
Defensive snaps: 65
Special teams snaps: 13

Metchie, who totaled 74 yards on five catches, played in 44 snaps. Xavier Hutchinson led all playmakers with 57 snaps. Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil was the only lineman not to play all 68 snaps. He left on the Joe Mixon touchdown drive for three plays, thus opening up the rep count.

Defensively, Calen Bullock totaled his three games with 100% of reps. Both Kamari Lassiter and Derek Stingley Jr. totaled all 65 snaps in the secondary. Jalen Pitre played 83% of the snaps. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair returned for the first time in three weeks and played in 91% of reps.

The Texans return home next week to face off against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. They should have back Nico Collins, who’s missed the previous five games while on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Kickoff from AT&T Stadium is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT.

Watch: Texans set tone on ‘SNF’ vs. Lions with Jimmie Ward interception

The Houston Texans began on defense against the Detroit Lions and stopped the red hot offense with a Jimmie Ward interception

No offense in the NFL has been playing better than the Detroit Lions over the past six weeks.

The Houston Texans didn’t get the memo and got off the field and set up their offense in prime field position.

Nickel defender Jalen Pitre got in the way of Lions quarterback Jared Goff, tipping his pass, which veteran safety Jimmie Ward was able to get his hands under for the opening drive interception.

Here’s a look at the play below.

Goff has thrown just 22 incompletions during Detroit’s six-game winning streak, including one interception. He’s already thrown two incompletions and an interception after one drive.

The turnover is the first caused by Ward this season, who returned to the lineup after a four-game hiatus due to a groin injury.

Houston is 3-1 this season when Ward plays, so it makes sense why the AFC South leaders love when No. 20 is out on the field making plays.

Watch: Texans RB Joe Mixon keeps up monster season with another TD vs. Lions

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon is well on his way to an All-Pro season with another scoring drive on primetime.

(This story was updated to change or add a photo or video.)

Death, taxes, and Joe Mixon finding the end zone are the only three things Houston Texans fans have come to know are inevitable in 2024.

Without Nico Collins, the Texans continue to emphasize the importance of the ground game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football. After four underwhelming runs following a Jimmie Ward interception, Mixon broke to the outside for an 8-yard touchdown run.

The score marks Mixon’s fifth consecutive game with a rushing touchdown and eighth score of the regular season. C.J. Stroud evaded a pair of sacks and connected with Tank Dell and John Metchie III for first-down gains.

Here’s a look at the play below.

The Texans often talk about unsung heroes throughout a regular season. Mixon doesn’t score without receiver Robert Woods setting up a screen block against Lions defensive back Brian Brach, who was in pursuit of meeting Mixon behind the line for a loss of yards.

Mixon, who’s averaging 4.8 yards per run, could make history on Sunday night entering the midway point of the regular season.

With 100 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Lions, the former Bengals Pro Bowler would become the third player in NFL  history to rush for 100 yards and a touchdown in six of their first seven games of a season.

He’s already got the score. Now, he needs 98 yards.

Is Nico Collins playing tonight? Latest injury updates for Texans WR

Nico Collins is dealing with a hamstring injury entering Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions.

The Houston Texans return home for Sunday Night Football in what could be a potential Super Bowl preview vs. the Detroit Lions. While the Texans will have Tank Dell back in the lineup, one player could be out for another week.

Despite being activated off the injured reserve, wide receiver Nico Collins was always going to be a game-time decision. Will the Texans’ top target be able to play in Week 10 against the NFC favorites?

That’s the only question Texans and Lions fans alike will want answered ahead of their primetime clash at NRG Stadium.

Nico Collins injury update

Collins, who missed the past four games with a hamstring injury, was officially designated to return on Friday. That opened a 21-day window during which Collins could practice with the Texans without taking up space on the team’s 53-man roster.

On Saturday, the Texans activated him to the 53-man roster, but still listed him as questionable for Sunday’s game. His status was always expected to be murky, especially given that he hadn’t gone through a full practice in nearly a month.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans was noncommittal when questioned about the 25-year-old’s status for Sunday’s contest against the NFC North leaders.

“Nico, he’s doing good,” Ryans said after Wednesday’s practice. “We’ll see where he ends up.”

On Sunday, the Texans listed him as inactive. He’ll need a bit more time to recover before taking the field.

When will Nico Collins return?

Barring a setback, it’s expected that Collins will be cleared for Monday’s Lone Star showdown at AT&T Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys. Houston’s being patient with its No. 1 receiver, knowing its next three contests will bode in its favor.

Second-year receiver Tank Dell, who also appeared on the injury report with a back injury, is good to go. He’ll serve as the No. 1 weapon for C.J. Stroud against a pesky but penalty-riddled Lions’ secondary.

Nico Collins stats

Collins, who last played in Week 5’s win over the Buffalo Bills, caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from Stroud in the first quarter before leaving for the remainder of the evening. He entered Week 5 as the NFL leader in receiving yards with 567. Collins also ranked third in catches with 32 and led the Texans with three receiving touchdowns.

Texans WR depth chart?

With Collins sidelined and two-time All-Pro Stefon Diggs on the season-ending injured reserve, here’s a look at the Texans receiving depth chart entering Week 10.

  • Tank Dell
  • Robert Woods
  • John Metchie III
  • Xavier Hutchinson
  • Steven Sims

Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik praised Dell’s performance after taking over as the leading receiver last Thursday.

Since Diggs’ departure, Dell has collected 10 catches for 141 yards and one touchdown on 13 targets.

“He took advantage of some matchups, and some plays worked out where we had given him plenty of opportunities in the last three or four weeks,” Slowik said. “Sometimes, you can’t control the coverage.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on NBC.

Texans schedule: Who is Houston playing in Week 10?

Are the Houston Texans playing this week? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

The Houston Texans must respond following their 21-13 loss to the New York Jets in Week 9.

Things won’t get easier for the AFC South favorites as they welcome in one of the league’s top rosters on primetime off nine days of rest.

Who is next on the schedule to kickstart the month of November? Let’s discuss below.

Who will the Texans play in Week 10 of the NFL schedule?

Houston takes on the Detroit Lions on Halloween at NRG Stadium. This marks the first time the two programs take on each other for the first time in four years.

The Texans (6-3) might be three games above .500, but they’ve struggled to find balance each week. Joe Mixon rushed for over 100 yards for the fifth time this season, while C.J. Stroud threw for less than 200 yards and never found his way into the end zone.

Few teams are as hot as the Lions, who recently acquired defensive end Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline. Winners of six straight, Detroit is coming off a 10-point victory against the Green Bay Packers, who bested Houston in Week 7.

The Lions will also be gaining back speedy threat Jameson Williams, who was reinstated following his two-game suspension. Houston could be without both defensive end Will Anderson Jr. and receiver Nico Collins.
