Lions Wire and Detroit Lions Podcast join forces once again

Instead of writing everything out, sometimes it’s better to listen or watch the thoughts on the Lions. That’s the case in a wide-ranging episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast which I had the pleasure of co-hosting this week.

The Detroit Lions made some massive changes on Saturday. In firing GM Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia, new Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp made the first real move of her reign since taking over for her mother, Martha Ford, last December.

Lions Wire’s managing editor Jeff Risdon joined with Chris and Andy from the Detroit Lions Podcast for a live breakdown of the move. Streamed live on YouTube, the trio discussed why it was a necessary move but not necessarily an easy one for Ford Hamp.

Lions Wire and Detroit Lions Podcast interview with Dean Blandino on the Clete Blakeman controversy

Blandino is the former NFL VP of Officiating

The Clete Blakeman controversy never should happen. Every Detroit Lions fan knows that already, but it was nice to hear it from the man who used to make sure the NFL avoided such blunders.

Former NFL VP of Officiating Dean Blandino agreed that assigning Blakeman to officiate Sunday’s matchup between the Lions and Green Bay Packers was a terrible lapse of judgment and oversight by the NFL. Blandino discussed that issue and several other officiating topics in an interview with the Detroit Lions Podcast, co-hosted by Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon. Tony Ortiz of 97.1 The Ticket also joined in on the action.

Blandino said that when he was in charge, he would personally look over the officiating assignments each week to make sure there was no chance for fans to cry foul. He notes how poorly Blakeman handled the Week 6 meeting between the Lions and Packers last year, a game rife with lopsided calls in the Packers’ favor.

Citing logistical concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Blandino does note the NFL probably can’t avoid some situations like this one. He also talks about the “eye in the sky” review concept he helped implement with the XFL and why it’s time for the NFL to have it, too.

Risdon, Ortiz and co-host Chris also break down the Packers game, matchups to watch and final injury report.

Join along as co-host Chris and I break down the initial Lions players placed on the COVID-19 reserve list and opt-out list. What happens with the players who get placed on it, and where does the team go from the initial protocols?

Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon joined the Detroit Lions Podcast for a quick-hit episode covering several Lions and NFL developments.

In this episode, we covered the cancelation of half of the NFL preseason and how it impacts the Lions. What does it mean for training camp and for some of the young players?

Then came the latest Darius Slay comments. Slay confirmed the Lions did not disguise coverages well, something that Packers WR Davante Adams pointed out in a recent breakdown.
