Destiny 2 is teaming with Mass Effect and Bioware in a really cool collaboration

New Cosmetics are coming to Destiny 2

Destiny 2 developer Bungie has announced that a new collaboration is coming to the game, this time in the form of Bioware’s excellent sci-fi epic, Mass Effect. This follows collaborations with other video game franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Last of Us and The Witcher.

Players will be excited to hear that this round of cosmetics will be free of charge, a departure from the previous round of collaborations, which required silver — Destiny’s in-game currency — to purchase the items. Titans can suit up as Commander Sheppard and his N7 armor. At the same time, Hunters and Warlocks will be outfitted with the armor of two of Sheppard’s most recognizable squadmates, Garrus Vakarian and Liara T’Soni, respectively.

Also included in the Alliance Requisition Bundle are the Enhanced Defense Ghost Shell, the Alliance Drop Ship Sparrow, and the Alliance Scout Frigate Ship, a nod to the iconic Normandy (Joker not included). Players will also be able to purchase a finisher and emote for silver. These items will be available starting Feb. 13.

Bungie axes Destiny 2 starter pack for ‘not bringing joy’

Bungie recently launched a Destiny 2 starter pack ostensibly meant to ease players into the space game, but fans weren’t having it

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzNSI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

Bungie launched a Destiny 2 starter pack in Season of the Wish and quickly removed it after players’ furious response. It’s pretty easy to see why as well. “Starter pack” ostensibly sounds like something meant to ease players into the space game, which is particularly helpful given how convoluted Destiny 2 is for newcomers, with its vaulted content and confusing expansion progression.

The incident comes after Bungie released Lightfall to lukewarm reception, admitted it messed up, and laid off several staff members before delaying The Final Shape to June 2024.

For $15, the Destiny 2 starter pack offered players:

  • Traveler’s Chosen
  • Ruinous Effigy
  • Sleeper Simulant
  • Exotic Ship
  • Exotic Sparrow
  • Exotic Ghost Shell
  • 125,000 Glimmer
  • 50 Enhancement Cores
  • 5 Enhancement Prisms
  • 1 Ascendant Shard

The first three items are Exotic weapons – that’s Destiny-talk for rare stuff – but they’re old and not very useful in most of the game’s current activities. You can also get them for free in the in-game shop after putting in a bit of work.

The labeled Exotic items are just cosmetics. Your Sparrow is a space motorbike, and the ghost shell just covers your little flying companion. The ship only shows up during loading sequences, which makes Bungie’s descriptive note “Fly between destinations in your new Exotic ship” seem just a little misleading for players who have no idea what’s even going on.

The materials are a mixed bag. Some are useful, but only once you make a fair bit of progress in the game, and others, like Glimmer, are useful for everyone – but the amount is trivial.

“These would be login rewards in any other MMO,” one Twitter user wrote.

“$15 for this ‘Starter Pack’ is outrageous,” another said. “You could just buy a Season, and get WAY more bang for your buck. Any New Player who buys this is going to be told ‘Yeah bud you just got ripped off’ by their veteran friends.”

The reaction on Reddit wasn’t much better.

“It’s an immediate question who thought this was a good idea, market it as a starter pack but comes with no expansions and the contents are something dying MMOs/online games would give for free as login rewards,” Reddit user Ashviar wrote.

“If they really wanted to make a ‘starter pack’ for this game, it should be something like bundling together a bunch of the old expansions’ content together for cheap,” Redditer LettersWords said. “Of course, Bungie would never actually do that, though.”

What Bungie did do was remove the pack entirely, just a day after launching it.

“We launched Season of the Wish yesterday and have been monitoring the conversation around what you’ve been enjoying and what you haven’t,” Bungie said on its Destiny 2 Team Twitter page. “We’ll start things off with the Starter Pack, which is not something bringing joy. We’ve heard your concerns and agreed that there are other parts of Destiny 2 that new players should want to dive into first before chasing these Exotic weapons, cosmetics, and upgrade materials.”

Over 100 people responded to that tweet by telling Bungie that wasn’t their concern with the pack to begin with, but Bungie didn’t say whether they plan to offer a different starter pack or a clear road for new Destiny 2 players in the future.

‘We missed the mark’ – Bungie on Destiny 2’s latest expansion

Lightfall hasn’t gone over well with most fans of the looter shooter.

Destiny 2 fans have been quite vocal about their disappointment in the Lightfall expansion, and developer Bungie knows that things could’ve gone better.

On Wednesday, Bungie released a blog update going over the highs and lows of Destiny 2: Lightfall‘s first month. Lightfall was apparently a massive hit sales-wise and even debuted as the number-one soundtrack on iTunes. However, Bungie also acknowledged that the expansion’s overall reception wasn’t exactly glowing (thanks, Eurogamer).

“With a solid amount of data now under our belts, it’s clear we missed the mark on some of our goals and needed to make updates based on constructive feedback,” Bungie said.

Furthermore, Destiny 2 director Joe Blackburn took some time to reassure everyone that Bungie will keep improving the expansion for some time.

“We’re floored by how many new and returning faces have been devouring Destiny 2 these last few weeks, and while it’s clear the initial experience we delivered on day one didn’t provide the full clarity we originally planned for when we set out creating Lightfall, the team has taken the feedback to heart in both what’s coming this year,” Blackburn explains. “Over the last few years, the team has set a high bar for what to expect from Destiny 2‘s evolving world, and we’re committed to making sure the resolution of our first saga lives up to that legacy.”

If you’re still chest-deep in Destiny 2: Lightfall, we have several guides on action figure locations and reaching the power cap.

Lance Reddick still has ‘performances yet to come’ in Destiny 2, says Bungie

The tributes from players have been ‘overwhelming’

Lance Reddick, known to Destiny 2 players for his role as Commander Zavala, still has incoming performances as the character – despite the actor’s tragic passing last week.

In a blog update released on Thursday, developer Bungie touched on Reddick’s impact within Destiny 2 and his work’s importance to many players.

“The tributes that have poured in for Lance have been overwhelming; from endless heartfelt messages on social media to impromptu gatherings of respect in Zavala’s corner of the Tower, overlooking the Last City,” reads Bungie’s statement. “As an actor, musician, gamer, and family man, the passion Lance brought to the things he loved was reflected in the eyes and hearts of all who loved him.”

“For now, we will honor his presence through his performances yet to come in the game, and in the memories that will last us a lifetime,” it continues. “We are deeply saddened by his passing but so thankful for the time we spent together, and our thoughts are with his friends and loved ones.”

While Reddick was best known for his roles in The WireFringe, and John Wick, he also had several iconic performances in video games and subsequent adaptations – including the character of Sylens in Horizon Forbidden West and Albert Wesker in Netflix’s Resident Evil series.

Destiny 2 Lightfall action figure locations: How to complete They’re Not Dolls triumph

Destiny 2’s latest expansion has a new round of collectibles that will be released over the coming weeks. We’ll help you find them.

Once the campaign for the new Destiny 2 expansion is out of the way, you should have a look at the post-campaign content, specifically the “Virtual Fighter” title. In there you’ll find a triumph called “They’re Not Dolls”, which asks you to look for action figure collectibles. Like those from previous expansions, finding them is no easy feat.

There are nine figures to find on Neomuna, although you can’t get all of them right now. As the season progresses, more will become available around the world, with two obtainable right now. It’s likely a new one will be added each week as the season progresses, we’ll tell you where to find them, and keep things updated with each Destiny 2 weekly reset.

PS Plus’ February games include Evil Dead and a Destiny 2 expansion

Sony announced the PS Plus games for February available for all subscribers, including a multiplayer horror game and a Destiny expansion

Sony announced the PS Plus games for February available for all subscribers starting Feb. 7, 2023, including a multiplayer horror game and a free Destiny expansion. The PS Plus Extra and Premium games have yet to be announced.

First up is Evil Dead The Game, an asynchronous multiplayer game rooted in the Evil Dead franchise. You and a team of survivors face off against a swarm of Deadites and the Kandarian Demon, exploring and looting across locations pulled directly from the Evil Dead films.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is also up for grabs. Beyond Light takes you to Europa and adds the Stasis element to the FPS game, a vital component in most modern Destiny 2 builds and a significant boon heading into Destiny 2 Lightfall later in February.

Mafia: Definitive Edition brings the 2002 crime game to life for modern audiences, smoothing out some of its rougher elements and revamping the visuals. The last game is OlliOlli World, a skateboarding platformer where you grind, hop, and air your way to Gnarvana and appease the skate gods.

All of the February PS Plus games will remain in your library after the month ends, as long as you remain a PS Plus subscriber. While you’re downloading your PS4 and PS5 games, you may want to take a look at the PS Plus Collection before it’s too late. Sony announced the collection is being shuttered in just a few months.

The best FPS games – the top 17 shooters of all time

We just chose the best 15 first-person shooters.

Once they were a vehicle for tech innovation, then everyone’s favorite storytelling medium. When we all got online, shooters were there to show us why that was exciting. Whenever the newspapers needed a moral panic, shooters were happy to provide one.

Perhaps more than any other genre, a list of the best shooters tells a story about the medium and what we wanted from it at the time. It’s shapeshifted into something athletes can devote their lives to and fill arenas through their talents, but it’s also been there to ask us uncomfortable questions about what we see on the news. At this point, its library is so rich that it can even parody itself from years past, and to great effect.

[mm-video type=video id=01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav/01fnp5g2j69gbjtbnsav-8a38f9e6b09f1d12cccb7df9934477f4.jpg]

That makes picking just 17 of them a hard task. So we didn’t – instead we built a vast learning AI, made it play every FPS released since the dawn of time, and provide us an empirical ranking of their quality.

Okay, that was a lie. Look, we just chose the best 17 shooters, ok? Get off our backs. That does mean just one game from each series though – otherwise you’d be about to read a lot of Quake and Half-Life entries.

A Destiny 2 and Assassin’s Creed crossover is happening soon

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is getting a Destiny 2 crossover before Eivor hangs up their axe , with some AC items headed to the space game too

The last big Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is happening soon, and Ubisoft and Bungie are making sure Eivor goes out with style thanks in part to an Assassin’s Creed and Destiny 2 crossover. Destiny leaker MAK Moderator first spotted data pertaining to Destiny-related costumes in Ubisoft’s open-world adventure and Bungie’s space game, and both developers made the official announcement on Twitter not long after.

The crossover will include two new armor sets in Valhalla inspired by Destiny 2: one based on Lord Shaax and one on Saint-14. Meanwhile, in Destiny 2’s Eververse shop, Guardians can buy Assassin’s Creed-themed items, including what looks like a skin for your Ghost, a new Sparrow to kick over, and possibly a new themed ship as well.

The collections will go live on Dec. 6, 2022, the same day Valhalla’s Last Chapter Update was supposed to launch before Ubisoft released it early. Valhalla is also getting a Monster Hunter armor set inspired by Odogaron, Monster Hunter World’s pestilential Wyvern that stalks the Coral Highlands.

The Last Chapter Update is Valhalla’s final substantial round of new content and tweaks, meaning Eivor’s journey finally comes to a close, two years after they first set foot on Anglian territory. Destiny 2’s next major update comes in February 2023 with Lightfall, while Mirage, the new Assassin’s Creed game set in Baghdad, is planned for launch sometime in 2023.
