How Chargers will fill slot cornerback void

Coach Anthony Lynn is considering three players.

The Chargers have a void to fill, at least for now.

After trading Desmond King to the Titans on Monday, Los Angeles now finds themselves needing to fill the temporary void at the slot cornerback position.

At Monday’s media availability, coach Anthony Lynn started out by saying “Sometimes players need a fresh start. His time was up here and I wish him all the best,” when giving his thoughts on the trade

With King out, Lynn said he’s considering TeVaughn Campbell, Nasir Adderley and Jahleel Addae for starting slot duties.

Campbell started in place of King this past weekend, where he had a solid outing with the exception of the pass interference call and blown assignment on the final drive.

Addae was signed a couple of weeks ago to provide versatility. While he’s primarily played safety, he can play inside if need be. The same applies for Adderley, whose natural position is free safety, but has some experience at cornerback.

Chris Harris Jr. is the one who mans the starting spot, but he remains on the injured reserve with a foot injury, and he will continue to be sidelined for at least a couple of more weeks.

Report: Chargers shopping CB Desmond King for trade

Chargers cornerback Desmond King is in the final year of his contract.

The Chargers are looking to trade cornerback Desmond King ahead of the trade deadline on Nov. 3.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Los Angeles is shopping King, and that multiple teams have inquired.

This comes the day after L.A. ruled King out from Sunday’s loss to the Broncos for non-injury related reasons. Following the game, coach Anthony Lynn said King not playing was a “team decision.”

King, the former All-Pro defensive back and punt returner, is in the final year of his rookie contract.

After the signing of Chris Harris Jr., his playing time decreased drastically. King saw an uptick of snaps after Harris was placed on the injured reserve weeks ago, but his play has been a model of inconsistency.

In 2019, King experienced a down season, issues off the field and run-ins with the staff.

Should the Chargers choose to ship King, draft picks or offensive line help are among the things that the team could look to get in return.

In four seasons, King has amassed 213 tackles, 17 passes defensed, 14 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles.

Should Chargers trade CB Desmond King?

Could Desmond King be on the trade block?

The Chargers are equipped with one of the best secondaries in the NFL after signing cornerback Chris Harris Jr.

However, the acquisition could potentially leave one player out of the equation, Desmond King.

Harris is expected to start in the slot this upcoming season, which is the same position that King has been playing since this 2017 season.

There’s speculations of King converting to the team’s dime linebacker, which is the same role that Adrian Phillips was responsible for the past two seasons. But that would mean that King’s snaps would significantly decrease.

Then you have former second-round selection Nasir Adderley. Adderley’s rookie season was cut short due to injuries. If Rayshawn Jenkins is going to man the free safety position, could Adderley be a candidate for the dime linebacker role in order to receive playing time?

Or, Jenkins could be in position to play the dime linebacker role while Adderley slides into the free safety slot.

It’s certainly possible, but the fact of the matter is that the crowded secondary is likely to leave one player out. That leads to the question if the Chargers should deal King.

In a mailbag on Wednesday, The Athletic’s Daniel Popper said he believes there’s a chance King could be on the trading block.

Rather than letting him play his final season under contract, Los Angeles could be in a position where they could deal him to a team that’s in need of a proven cornerback and get valuable compensation in return.

Popper mentions two teams – Lions and Redskins. Trading with Detroit would include trading up to the No. 3 spot, where they would then likely secure the quarterback of the future. Trading with Washington would give L.A. their long-term left tackle in Trent Williams and a draft pick.

While King has proven to be an impact defender, the acquisition of Harris could be hinting that he is now viewed as a trade candidate.

With that being said, we want to know if you believe it would be worth it to ship the former All-Pro selection.
