Derrius Guice and Shaun Dion Hamilton listed as breakout candidates

Here’s two notable breakout candidates for the Redskins.

This year, the Washington Redskins had a few different breakout players, with Terry McLaurin easily commanding the spotlight.

Who might be next in 2020?

Ask Ben Linsey at Pro Football Focus, running back Derrius Guice and linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton might ascend in 2020.

Guice doesn’t need much of an explanation — he’s looked borderline elite when he’s been able to stay healthy.

The explanation for Dion Hamilton is notable though:

“This offseason, we wrote that Hamilton was in a position to break out in the wake of Reuben Foster’s knee injury. In a part-time role, he did play well, earning a 74.9 overall grade on 387 defensive snaps. Most importantly, he was excellent in coverage. Hamilton’s 89.7 coverage grade this season ranked second among all qualifying linebackers, sandwiched between Lavonte David and the recently retired Luke Kuechly for the best marks in the NFL. It’s an area of his game that was a strength coming out of Alabama, and it has flashed at the NFL level.”

And few who watched the Redskins this year would disagree with the notion Dion Hamilton has had the look of a breakout star since joining the team.

While Dion Hamilton has a muddy depth chart in front of him thanks to guys like Cole Holcomb and the perhaps-returning Reuben Foster, his talent speaks for itself.

Getting everyone enough playing time at any position is a good problem to have and thanks to what seems like a continuing upward trend for Dion Hamilton, the Redskins have that going on at linebacker.

Count Derrius Guice among Redskins excited about Ron Rivera

Derrius Guice kept it simple.

The secret didn’t take long for most to figure out — Ron Rivera is likely the next coach of the Washington Redskins.

That means players have figured this out too and some went as far as reacting on social media.

As seen in the tweet above, running back Derrius Guice is one such guy who didn’t mind letting the world know he’s happy about his new coach.

And given Rivera’s reputation, how could Guice not be excited? Besides the obvious, Rivera’s teams have always been kind to running backs too.

Guice gets a new coach at a critical time in his career. After missing his rookie season, he appeared in five games this year and ran for 245 yards and two touchdowns on a 5.8 per-carry average.

Redskins place Derrius Guice on Injured Reserve, ending his season

Guice will sit out the rest of the year as he is sent to the IR to recover from a sprained MCL he suffered on Sunday.

The Washington Redskins have made the move to place second-year running back Derrius Guice on the Injured Reserve list after he sprained his MCL in Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

This is the second time this year that Guice has been placed on the IR, the first of which came after the first game of the year when he tore his meniscus against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The move for the Redskins doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as Guice was already ruled out of this week’s game against the Eagles, and many speculated how much he would play for the rest of the season, as there are just three games left on the schedule.

It will be another long offseason spent recovering from a knee injury for the second-year player who is now dealing with his third major knee ailment in two seasons in the NFL.

It’s time for the Adrian Peterson show in Washington once again

With Guice sidelined this week at the least, AP will again be called upon to shoulder the load, and he has some incentives to pad the stats.

It’s times like these when having a future-Hall of Fame, veteran running back on your roster really pays dividends.

With second-year breakout running back Derrius Guice now sidelined with a sprained MCL, it will once again be the Adrian Peterson show in Washington. By now, he’s used to stepping up when called upon, and this time around should be no different.

Over a year ago, AP was signed by the Redskins just before the season after Guice went down with a torn ACL. He stepped in to rush for over 1,000 yards that season. Earlier this year, AP was once again called upon to shoulder the load after Guice suffered a torn meniscus in the first game of the year. Now, he will once again be asked to keep the ground-game afloat while Guice sits for at least this next game, and quite possibly the final three weeks of the season.

None of this is to say that Peterson has not maintained a role with Guice in the lineup, but it has been diminished. So far on the season, AP has ran for a total of 718 yards and three touchdowns. In the four games where he’s split the load with Guice after the young gun returned from injury, Peterson has 227 yards and two touchdowns — hardly RB2 numbers.

It should also be noted that Peterson has some incentives to pad the stats in these final three weeks, as a $500,000 roster bonus kicks in if he rushes for over 1,000 yards again this season.

With an increasing likelihood that we don’t see Guice take the field again until 2020, it will be the Adrian Peterson show once again in Washington. Even at the ripe of age of 34, that’s always some must-watch television.

Derrius Guice confirmed to have sprained MCL

Guice was confirmed to have a sprained MCL on Tuesday, which is good news because the injury could have been much worse.

It was confirmed on Tuesday morning that Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice suffered a sprained MCL on Sunday when taking a direct hit to the knee and awkwardly falling to the ground in the second quarter against the Green Bay Packers.

Guice, who has dealt with both a torn ACL and torn meniscus already in his two-year career, has been ruled out of this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear him be ruled out for the rest of the season, with just three games left on the schedule.

After the game, Guice took to Twitter and called the hit a cheap shot, and claimed that the defender was aware of his knee issues, and took direct aim regardless. The tweet was later deleted.

For now, this is relatively good news, as the injury could have been much worse for a young and dynamic player who has already battled enough in his short NFL career.

Redskins could shut down Derrius Guice regardless of injury severity

Derrius Guice’s season could be over.

The Washington Redskins are understandably going to take a cautious approach to the latest Derrius Guice injury.

Guice left Sunday’s game with a knee injury and the initial belief is he only suffered an MCL sprain.

But according to Sam Fortier of the Washington Post, the Redskins might shut Guice down regardless:

“But at a minimum, Guice will miss Sunday’s game, and Callahan said the Redskins haven’t ruled out shutting him down for the final two games of the season, too, no matter the severity of the injury.”

Better safe than sorry at this point, right? Guice had a long road back from injury after his rookie season was lost. The recovery there featured multiple operations.

The timing of this one couldn’t be worse with Washington trying to make sure Dwayne Haskins has the best possible learning environment. But with only a handful of games left, even that isn’t worth risking Guice’s long-term health while he tries to power through an injury.

Derrius Guice will not play on Sunday vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Guice has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Eagles while the team awaits his MRI results.

Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice underwent an MRI on Monday morning, and the team is awaiting results of the testing. Meanwhile, head coach Bill Callahan announced that Guice will not play this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles due to the injury.

While the severity of the injury is not yet know, a report came out on Sunday that the team believes it is a sprained MCL. There is not yet any word on how long the second-year star will be held out of action, though with just three games remaining in the season, it is possible that he will be held out for the rest of the year.

Adrian Peterson says Derrius Guice’s injury ‘could have been worse’

Guice might have suffered the third major knee injury of his two-year career on Sunday, but AP is encouraging him to stay positive.

Washington Redskins second-year running back Derrius Guice is familiar with the frustrations that come with being injured and held out of action. So far in his two-year NFL career, he has missed an entire season due to a torn ACL, and the better part of his second season due to a torn meniscus.

That is why the collective breath of Redskins’ Nation was held on Sunday afternoon when Guice went down once again after taking a hit to the left knee and going down awkwardly against the Green Bay Packers.

While the young star laid on the ground in pain, veteran RB Adrian Peterson stood by his side. After the game, he offered some encouragement to the dynamic back who had been having a breakout season in his short time back on the field.

“I know what he’s been through,” Peterson said, via The Athletic. “That’s the last thing he needs is another serious injury, so like I told him, take the positives away. I know you wanted to be out there to play and help finish the game, but it could’ve been worse than what it was.”

Peterson is no stranger to serious knee injuries, as he suffered a torn ACL earlier in his career and returned a year later to rush for over 2,000 yards. He understands the importance of approaching recovery with a positive attitude.

“And that’s what I was telling him, he was looking like, ‘What can I take out of it?’ and I was like, ‘Hey, it could’ve been worse, it could’ve been an ACL,’” Peterson said. “So just be grateful it was something that won’t linger too long, and think about the positive things. Because any other thing is going to keep you down, and keep you in a funk and have you stressed and depressed when there’s nothing you can do about what happened. … It’s not something that’ll keep you out nine months.”

Guice is undergoing on MRI on Monday to find out the extent of the injury, but speculation within the franchise has led the team to believe that it is a sprained MCL that kept the RB out of the game.

Until we find out more about the severity of the injury, all we can do is stay positive, and hope for the best.

Report: Redskins believe RB Derrius Guice suffered sprained MCL

Guice exited the game in the second quarter after awkwardly falling on his left knee, and he did not return to the game.

Reports out of Washington say that the hope for running back Derrius Guice is that he suffered an MCL sprain in the second quarter against the Green Bay Packers.

Guice, who went down on an awkward fall, left the game and would not return. It was feared that the injury could be serious, ending his season yet again. While an official prognosis is not yet out, the team seems to feel better about it.

Guice missed his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL, and he missed the first 10 weeks of this season after tearing his meniscus as well. He will undergo an MRI to learn further details.

Redskins eliminated from playoffs with 20-15 loss to Packers

The Redskins couldn’t quite get it done against the Packers on Sunday, but they showed a lot of heart in the loss.

The Washington Redskins were unable to get the job done on the road in Green Bay on Sunday, falling to the Packers, 20-15, officially eliminating them from the playoffs.

It was always going to be a tough win to get, but Washington was forced to play from behind early on with a long string of injuries that depleted the starting lineup for the Redskins.

Through it all, the offense was stagnant but largely mistake-free, and the defense did a great job of keeping future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers in check and holding the Packers to only 20 points on the day. Here are our instant takeaways from the game.

Injuries Steal the Day

It’s long been a joke within the Washington Redskins fanbase that the injury bug is part of the 53-man roster every year, as it plays more of a role on the team than any other player does. That was as true as ever on Sunday against the Packers, and it started early on.

In the second quarter, it was announced that cornerbacks Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau had both suffered hamstring injuries and were questionable to return. Moreau eventually came back into the game, but Dunbar remained questionable. Just a few plays later, running back Derrius Guice — who has battled injuries through his entire career — took a brutal hit to his left leg and fell awkwardly to the turf. He remained there for a minute, then walked off the field under his own power. It was announced at halftime that he would not return to the game.

To start the third quarter, linebacker Ryan Kerrigan pulled up short on a rush attempt around the right edge, favoring his right leg. It was announced that he would miss the rest of the game with a calf injury, but many fear that, by the way that he was walking, it could have something to do with his Achilles tendon.

On top of all of this, QB Dwayne Haskins suffered a leg injury on one of the many hits he took in the first half, but he toughed it out and played throughout the game, although it was obvious that he was injured and less mobile than normal.

The injury bug is ever-present in Washington, but it made the trip with the team to Green Bay this week.

Haskins Shows Heart

It wasn’t a great statistical game for Haskins, but he proved a lot on Sunday. He showed that he is willing to play through immense pain and stick it out for his teammates.

After getting hit several times in the first half, Haskins limped to the locker room, leaving many to call for the team to bench him and bring in Case Keenum for his own well-being. Nonetheless, Haskins started the second half and played for the rest of the game, making a few nice plays along the way. It was announced in the fourth quarter that Haskins was dealing with a sprained ankle, but he was still willing to tough it out, based on the mentality that Bill Callahan had instilled in the team.

At the end of the day, Haskins 170 yards and one touchdown weren’t quite enough to take down the Packers, but in the process, he showed the type of resolve and resiliency that is desired in NFL QBs. It was a good day for the rookie, despite the L on the score sheet.

Adrian Peterson Makes More History

Father time is still left waiting for Peterson to slow down.

After Guice was ruled out with an injury, Peterson took over and scored another touchdown, making him the only player in NFL history to score seven touchdowns at Lambeau Field.

Peterson finished the day with 76 yards and 1 touchdown on 20 carries. Depending on how serious Guice’s injury is, AP could be left as the main option in Washington once again. We’ve seen him excel in that role before, and there’s nothing to say he can’t do it again.
