Social Media reacts as 5-star DL David Hicks chooses Texas A&M over Oklahoma

Wednesday afternoon provided an unexpected turn of events as David Hicks switched gears and committed to Texas A&M over the Oklahoma Sooners. Social Media Reacts.

In a shocking turn of events, David Hicks, who had been trending toward the Oklahoma Sooners for the last several months, chose the Texas A&M Aggies when he made his commitment live on ESPN this afternoon.

Hicks, who was the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country, had been projected to Oklahoma for some time by 247Sports national recruiting director Steve Wiltfong.

It’s a huge loss for a Sooners recruiting class that was on the verge of breaking into the top three had they earned a commitment from David Hicks. This interior defensive line loss comes on the heels of missing out on four-star defensive lineman Jordan Renaud to Alabama just a few weeks ago.

Oklahoma still has some talent coming to Norman along the defensive line in Adepoju Adebawore, Colton Vasek, and Derrick LeBlanc, but missing out on Hicks still looms large. Losing out on a top 10 talent in the 2023 class that would have been the highest-rated commitment in your recruiting class hurts.

Here’s how social media reacted in the wake of David Hicks’ commitment to the Texas A&M Aggies.

In a twist, 5-star DL David Hicks picks Texas A&M over the Oklahoma Sooners

In a shocking turn of events, 2023 five-star defensive lineman David Hicks spurns the Oklahoma Sooners in favor of the Texas A&M Aggies.

Heading into decision day, the Oklahoma Sooners looked to be the clear favorite for 2023 five-star defensive lineman David Hicks. Instead, Hicks chose the Texas A&M Aggies over the Oklahoma Sooners in a decision day shocker.

The battle always came down to Oklahoma and Texas A&M, but with crystal ball predictions from Steve Wiltfong and other recruiting experts sticking up until the moment Hicks committed, it seemed like the Sooners had their cornerstone piece for the defensive line.

Instead, the Sooners miss out on a five-star defensive line commitment yet again. It’s a new day in Norman with [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag], and they’ll win some of these battles. But to get so close to landing a foundational piece for a defense that will be making its debut in the SEC in 2024 or 2025 (Hicks’ sophomore or junior years) feels like the one that got away.

The Sooners still have a talented trio of defensive line prospects committed for the 2023 class. Five-star defensive end [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and four-star prospects [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] give Oklahoma a talented blue-chip trio to build upon moving forward.

It’s an unfortunate loss for Oklahoma, but all is not lost. Oklahoma currently has the No. 6 recruiting class for 2023, according to 247Sports. With more than four months until national signing day, there’s still time for the Sooners to make things happen on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma 2023 target Jordan Renaud chooses Alabama over the Sooners

Oklahoma Sooners four-star defensive line target Jordan Renaud commits to Alabama.

Well, you can’t win them all. However, after the summer the Oklahoma Sooners had on the recruiting trail, it felt like they’d never lose another recruiting battle.

Under Brent Venables, Oklahoma has won its fair share against Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Texas. But you’re bound to lose a few when you go head-to-head against some of the best on the recruiting trail. And that’s what happened on Monday morning: 2023 four-star defensive tackle [autotag]Jordan Renaud[/autotag] committed to the [autotag]Alabama Crimson Tide[/autotag].

It appeared Renaud had been leaning toward the Oklahoma Sooners based on recruiting projections from 247Sports in July. However, in the last week, Alabama picked up steam, earning a crystal ball projection from 247Sports director of national recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

“I feel that Alabama has always been a perennial powerhouse,” Renaud shared with On3 Sports. “As far as development goes, they have some of the best development in the country. Me and coach Roach have a great relationship. When I went on my visit there, it was very eye-opening to what Alabama really is and what they do for their players.”

Despite the loss to the Crimson Tide, the Sooners are still looking great along the defensive line. The Sooners have blue-chip prospects [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] pledged, and the Sooners are the favorite for five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag].

Now the Sooners turn their full attention to four-star wide receiver/tight end Malachi Coleman, another player trending in the Sooners’ direction.

On3 Analyst predicts 5-star DL David Hicks to commit to Oklahoma

On3 recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman issues On3 prediction in favor of Oklahoma landing 5-star DL David Hicks out of Katy, Texas.

The good news keeps coming for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting trail. After landing commitments from four-star prospects [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag] on Friday, Oklahoma received a favorable prediction to land five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag].

On3 National Recruiting Analyst Sam Spiegelman believes the Sooners are now the favorites to land the talented five-star prospect out of Katy, Texas.

Hicks is a top 20 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 1 defensive lineman according to On3 and 247Sports. Adding an incredible talent like Hicks to a group that includes five-star edge [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], four-star edge [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag], and four-star DL [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] would give the Oklahoma Sooners a blue-chip defensive line in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

There isn’t a decision date for Hicks at this point, but it looks like Todd Bates has the Oklahoma Sooners positioned well to land another five-star prospect in the recruiting cycle.

David Hicks’ Recruiting Profile

Projections

  • On3’s recruiting prediction machine has the Oklahoma Sooners out in front as of August 28, 2022. Back in July, Texas A&M was leading the way.
  • SoonerScoop‘s Josh McCuistion and Rivals Nick Harris both issued Rivals Futurecasts in favor of the Sooners on July 30, 2022.
  • Crystal ball prediction from Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong gives the Aggies the edge.

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class commitment tracker

Oklahoma Sooners 2023 commitment tracker

The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class is coming together quite nicely after a strong June, July, and start to August.

Since June 1, the Sooners have added 15 commitments. They added nine commitments in July, with eight rated as four-star players. Also, in July, quarterback Jackson Arnold saw his stock rise after winning the Elite 11 MVP award, earning five-star status.

Their 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings and No. 9 according to the On3 Consensus.

Oklahoma is still awaiting decisions from five-star defensive lineman [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], four-star cornerback [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag], four-star athlete [autotag]Malachi Coleman[/autotag], and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Anthony Evans[/autotag]. With those dominoes still to fall, the Sooners could see their class push into the top three by national signing day.

While we await the next commitment to the 2023 recruiting class, here’s a look at who’s locked in and where they rank in the 247Sports composite and the On3 consensus rankings.

Updated look at where OU stands in 247Sports team recruiting rankings after Colton Vasek commitment

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners stand in 247Sports team recruiting rankings after Colton Vasek’s commitment?

With the July the Oklahoma Sooners had and the addition of Colton Vasek to the recruiting class, there’s a great chance OU will end up with a top three recruiting class for the 2023 cycle.

Pretty good for a program with a first-time head coach. [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his staff are doing fantastic work on the recruiting trail, proving they have the recruiting chops to go head-to-head with some of the best recruiting schools and come out on top.

The latest commitment from [autotag]Colton Vasek[/autotag] shows that they can go deep into a rival’s territory and land a highly regarded prospect. The Sooners went into Austin and won over a Longhorns’ legacy, adding the four-star defensive end to Sooners 2023 class.

Another first-time head coach is crushing it on the recruiting trail as well. Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are No. 1 in 247Sports composite team rankings.

Like Oklahoma, it doesn’t appear that the coaching change or having a first-time head coach has done anything to hinder the recruiting potential of the two blue blood programs. Oregon, the other Power Five school that lost its head coach to another Power Five program, is the only one of the three that is behind the school that took their head coach, Mario Cristobal. Oregon, however, only has 12 commitments in the class compared to Miami’s 17. There’s still a chance the Ducks can catch the Hurricanes.

For Oklahoma in particular, the move from Lincoln Riley to Brent Venables has helped the Sooners recruit better on the defensive side of the ball, specifically the defensive line.

The additions of Vasek, [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag], and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag], combined with the predictions favoring the Sooners for [autotag]Jordan Renaud[/autotag] (4-star) and [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag] (5-star) has Oklahoma on track to make significant additions to the defensive front they’ll take into the SEC in the next year or two.

The Sooners are in a fantastic position to get commitments from Hicks, Renaud, four-star wide receiver Anthony Evans, four-star ATH Jacobe Johnson, and four-star cornerback Makari Vickers, which will push them into historic territory.

Several of those commitments could come at any moment, while Evans and Vickers will make their pledge at the end of the month.

After another big-time commitment for the Oklahoma Sooners, where do they stand in 247Sports composite team recruiting rankings as of August 2?

Sooner Nation reacts on social media to recruiting news and projections involving blue-chip prospects for 2023

Locks, crystal balls, and recruiting projections sent Sooner Nation ablaze on Saturday, and here are some of the best social media reactions.

The Party at the Palace was an opportunity to showcase the Oklahoma Sooners to a host of college football prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. And it made a huge impression on several prospects. On Friday and into Saturday, Oklahoma assistant coaches began dropping “lock” emojis on social media creating a frenzy among the fan base about which players they could be referring to.

Recruiting analysts began to share tidbits about what it could mean for the 2023 recruiting class without sharing names. Then just after lunchtime, the 247Sports crystal balls, Rivals FutureCasts, and On3 predictions started dropping for highly-regarded 2023 prospects Colton Vasek, Jordan Renaud, and David Hicks.

Three blue-chip prospects for Brent Venables’ defensive line after already adding [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] recently.

In these three recruiting battles, the Sooners are going up against Texas for Vasek, Alabama for Renaud, and Texas A&M for Hicks. And if the projections come to fruition, they’ll be huge wins for the Oklahoma Sooners in Brent Venables’ first full-year recruiting cycle. That doesn’t even include recent projections for players like [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag] and Jacobe Johnson in recent days. And with Peyton Bowen and Ryan Yaites in attendance, it’s possible the Sooners could flip commitments from Notre Dame and LSU.

Just when we thought Brent Venables’ 2023 recruiting class couldn’t get any better, he and his staff went out and showed us how it could get better.

Oklahoma Sooners receive several projections for 2023 5-star DL David Hicks

on the heels of the Party at the Palace, the Oklahoma Sooners earn a Rivals Futurecast from Josh McCuistion for 2023 5-star DL David Hicks.

It’s been a day for the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. After what looked to be a successful week of [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] Football Camp and the Party at the Palace, OU was on the receiving end of several predictions from the major recruiting services across the country.

247Sports, Rivals, and On3 were busy today, issuing predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners to land 2023 four-star edge rusher Colton Vasek and 2023 four-star defensive lineman Jordan Renaud.

All of this within weeks of landing four-star EDGE [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and defensive lineman [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag]. Now, the Sooners look to be serious contenders for the No. 1 defensive lineman in the class of 2023, five-star [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag].

Already armed with the No. 6 class in the 2023 cycle, the Sooners are on the verge of pushing their way past the Texas Longhorns and into the top three if the predictions come to fruition.

Florida’s 2023 recruiting class nearing top 10 after recent additions

The Gators are rolling. After adding four four-star recruits to the class of 2023, Florida is just outside the top 10 in 47Sports’ team rankings.

The Florida Gators started the month of July ranked 28th in the nation by 247Sports when it came to recruiting the class of 2023. Fast forward to July 30 and UF is ranked No. 12 by the service. It appears capable of pushing into the top 10.

Billy Napier earned pledges from a quartet of four-star recruits in the final week of the month. Cornerback [autotag]Ja’Keem Jackson[/autotag] was the first to commit, but his announcement might have been overshadowed by Florida missing on his teammates, four-star defensive linemen [autotag]John Walker[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag]. Both were considered priority targets for the Gators and were higher ranked than Jackson.

But Jackson’s commitment was the start of events. Receiver [autotag]Aidan Mizell[/autotag], who is ranked No. 72 overall on the 247Sports composite, picked the Gators the next day. Defensive back [autotag]Jordan Castell[/autotag], the No. 13 safety in the class, followed on Saturday morning, and former Miami wide receiver commit [autotag]Andy Jean[/autotag] moved up his announcement to join the fun.

That’s four four-star recruits committed in roughly 72 hours, and Florida might not be done. Perhaps this barrage of commitments is settled, but the Gators hosted several blue-chip recruits at their Friday Night Lights event and cookout.

At No. 12 overall, Florida sits just behind Tennessee and LSU. Leap-frogging the two SEC programs would not only put Florida in the top 10, but it would also put it directly behind Miami. The Hurricanes had an even bigger July than the Gators, recruiting-wise, and the two are bound to be compared as the season plays out.

Florida is moving in the right direction, but a five-star commitment is needed to get into the same conversations as the elites. [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] is the obvious name to go after to secure that top-10 placement, and this recent surge has fans believing Napier can pull it off.

Brent Venables recruiting philosophy is paying off for Oklahoma Sooners

In the midst of an incredible run on the recruiting trail in the 2023 cycle, it’s easy to see Brent Venables’ philosophy is paying off for the Okahoma Sooners.

If you haven’t seen it by now, the Oklahoma Sooners are red hot on the recruiting trail. It’s a far cry from the grave the national media and rival fans wanted to bury OU in during May.

Before June 1, the Sooners had four players committed to their 2023 recruiting class: [autotag]Joshua Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaleb Spencer[/autotag]. On the surface, and according to some, the Sooners were struggling to recruit. Appearances can be deceiving.

The reality was that [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his coaching staff were playing the long game. Preaching patience to players who were interested in committing to Oklahoma and encouraging those prospects to finish their recruiting process before making a commitment.

The main message is, “know that you know that you know that you know.” Venables doesn’t want players making a commitment and then continuing to shop around. That’s what changed with [autotag]Ashton Cozart[/autotag] and that’s something [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] is dealing with now as [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Makai Lemon[/autotag] and [autotag]Zachariah Branch[/autotag] (their top three 2023 commits) are visiting [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] this weekend after being committed to the Trojans for some time. Nelson and Lemon have been committed since Riley left for USC in November.

If a player that’s committed to a school is going on visits to another, they’re not committed. Committed individuals don’t look elsewhere. In their career, in their marriage, in their relationships or in college football.

For years, the idea of a commitment has been softened in college football. By coaches and by players. Coaches will be committed to a player and a program one day and find a better opportunity the next. A player considered a “hard commit” by a recruiting service can flip at a moment’s notice. Throw in the new world order of name, image and likeness, and nothing seems certain until a player is signed.

That’s why Venables is so passionate about his philosophy. He wants players to take their visits. He wants them to explore all of their options before they commit. He wants the players that commit to the University of Oklahoma to understand the true meaning of the word. Because when a player commits, Oklahoma is committing in turn.

Venables, his coaching staff, and the program are throwing the full weight of the University of Oklahoma’s resources behind the prospect’s development both as a person and as a player. And all they’re asking for is the same commitment in return.

A player that commits to the University of Oklahoma has had a chance to go through their process, explore all of their options, and have time to consider them. They aren’t making an emotional decision based on their visit. They’re making an informed one — that will impact their college and professional careers.

And it’s a process that’s paying off for the Oklahoma Sooners. The 18 players (and counting) that have committed to the Sooners are all in. They’ve seen what’s out there, taken their visits and decided Oklahoma was the best place for them. It makes it more likely a player will stick and sign with the Sooners.

The process hasn’t hindered OU one bit. Their 18 commits (and counting) have Oklahoma up to No. 6 in the team recruiting rankings with a chance to climb even higher with several blue-chip prospects still to decide.

Oklahoma has added 14 players since June 1 and nine players since July 1, including eight four-stars since June 15.

In the last six days, the Sooners have received commitments from four-star prospects [autotag]Jasiah Wagoner[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag].

The Sooners’ patience on the recruiting trail is putting them in a position to have one of the best classes the school has seen in the modern era of recruiting.

And to echo the sentiment from several 2023 commits, they aren’t done yet.
