Former Oklahoma D-lineman leaves Sooners, opens the door for USC

Florida’s main college football programs have the inside track on this portal prospect, but maybe USC can pull a surprise.

Oklahoma four-star freshman defensive lineman Derrick LeBlanc has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

LeBlanc, a Florida native, was ranked the 31st-best defensive lineman and 244th-best overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class according to the On3 industry rankings.

LeBlanc tallied 136 tackles and 28 sacks in his career at Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Florida.

The 6-foot-5, 278-pounder was the 10th-highest rated signee in Oklahoma’s fourth-ranked recruiting class. He was regarded as the No. 246 overall recruit in the 2023 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

With the news of the former four-star defensive tackle’s departure from the Oklahoma program many will wonder where the defensive lineman will land. Could USC could be one of the landing spots? It is not ludicrous to think there’s a chance for the Trojans here. LeBlanc was offered in 2022 by USC.

With LeBlanc being a native of Florida, the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Florida State Seminoles are the favorite to land him. It is unclear if he will take a year off or play this season, but he is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

What does defensive tackle look like after Derrick LeBlanc’s departure

What does the defensive tackle position look like after Derrick LeBlanc’s departure?

With the news of former four-star defensive tackle Derrick LeBlanc’s departure from the program, let’s take a look at where Oklahoma goes at defensive tackle.

LeBlanc announced on Twitter there were some “unforeseen circumstances” that resulted in him having to enter the portal.

Losing a guy like LeBlanc, you can look at it in one of two ways. On one hand, you don’t want to lose defensive linemen, especially those at defensive tackle. This is a position the Sooners are weak at, and you never want to lose talented players.

On the other hand, you aren’t losing any production. Did he have potential? Absolutely. But he hadn’t played a game yet.

Let’s be real. Unless something changed, he wasn’t going to be in the two-deep this year. I could argue he wasn’t top six at his position for 2023.

Injuries could change that, obviously, but it was unlikely he’d get playing time ahead of guys like [autotag]Da’Jon Terry[/autotag], [autotag]Phillip Paea[/autotag], [autotag]Jonah Laulu[/autotag], [autotag]Isaiah Coe[/autotag], [autotag]Jordan Kelley[/autotag], [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag] and [autotag]Gracen Halton[/autotag]. One could make the argument that [autotag]Ashton Sanders[/autotag] was in a better position to compete for snaps inside given the size he arrived in Norman with.

There’s been a great deal of buzz about Sanders and Halton this offseason, but both are still young guys that have developing to do. Halton was a four-star signee in the 2022 recruiting class after flipping from Oregon.

There have been rumors about Lacey not being able to play this year, so that would hurt. But we’ve heard Ethan Downs and Rondell Bothroyd could play up and down the line.

2024 is trickier, though. Laulu, Lacey, Kelley and Coe are out of eligibility after this season. Now the Sooners are in the running for elite players in the 2024 class. They can also address issues in the portal. But defensive tackle has some questions to answer in 2023 ahead of the program’s move to the SEC in 2024.

In their first year in the SEC, the Sooners could have very little depth at one of the most important positions.

If there’s a positive takeaway from the departure from the Sooners’ perspective, it’s that Derrick LeBlanc made the decision now as opposed to next winter. The Sooners are in the midst of recruiting so they might be able to get in on some recruits they had moved on from now that they have an extra spot available on the defensive line depth chart.

Oklahoma DL Derrick LeBlanc enters the transfer portal per On3 report

According to a report from On3 Sports, 2023 four-star DL Derrick LeBlanc is entering the transfer portal after just one semester with OU.

In an odd turn of events, one of Oklahoma’s 2023 enrollees is entering the transfer portal. After just one semester in Norman, four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] is entering the transfer portal, according to a report from On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Derrick LeBlanc was Oklahoma’s sixth highest-rated signee in the 2023 cycle and one of two blue-chip prospects signed to the class. Out of Kissimmee, Fla., LeBlanc was the No. 33 defensive lineman in the class and ranked No. 246 overall.

This offseason, the Sooners have been active in the transfer portal, adding interior defensive line options since the portal initially opened in the winter. Oklahoma’s added [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag], [autotag]Davon Sears[/autotag], [autotag]Da’Jon Terry[/autotag], and [autotag]Phillip Paea[/autotag] and moved Jonah Laulu from defensive end to defensive tackle this offseason. Those additions, along with the return of [autotag]Isaiah Coe[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Kelley[/autotag], could have limited his opportunities to get on the field in 2023.

In 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to add an impressive group of defensive linemen headlined by [autotag]David Stone[/autotag], [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag], and [autotag]Nigel Smith[/autotag], potentially creating a more difficult path toward playing time.

LeBlanc was a big addition for the Oklahoma Sooners, helping them secure one of their best recruiting classes in the modern recruiting era. Now with LeBlanc gone, [autotag]Ashton Sanders[/autotag] and [autotag]Markus Strong[/autotag] remain as the interior defensive linemen in the 2023 recruiting class.

Oklahoma Sooners bolster DL depth with portal addition of Phillip Paea

The Oklahoma Sooners added their second transfer defensive line commitment in as many days with the pledge from Phillip Paea.

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to have an improved defensive line in 2023. After allowing 187 rushing yards per game in 2022, the Sooners have been active in the transfer portal to improve that element of their defense.

The Sooners added their fourth defensive tackle through the transfer portal, receiving a commitment from Utah State transfer defensive tackle [autotag]Phillip Paea[/autotag].

Paea, who spent the last two seasons with Utah State, is coming off an ACL injury suffered early in the 2022 season. Prior to that, he was a starter for the Aggies, helping them win the 2021 Mountain West Conference championship. Paea originally signed with the Michigan Wolverines in the 2017 recruiting class, but didn’t make much of an impact in Ann Arbor, transferring to Utah State after the 2020 season.

Paea joins a defensive tackle room that’s added [autotag]Jacob Lacey[/autotag], [autotag]Davon Sears[/autotag], and on [autotag]Da’Jon Terry[/autotag] through the portal. Terry committed to the Sooners on Friday.

The defensive tackle group has a bunch of depth and experience with these additions. The transfer group joins ascending players like Isaiah Coe, [autotag]Jordan Kelley[/autotag], and [autotag]Gracen Halton[/autotag]. Jonah Laulu moved inside to allow his size and agility be more effective against guards.

Oklahoma also brought in a trio of interior defensive line prospects in the 2023 recruiting class with four-star [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] and three-star prospects [autotag]Ashton Sanders[/autotag] and [autotag]Markus Strong[/autotag].

Like Terry, Paea figures to help the Sooners as a nose tackle in Brent Venables’ defense. Last year, Paea was listed at 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds.

With all of the additions up front, it’s going to be fascinating to see ow the Sooners deploy their defensive tackles in 2023. The Sooners’ defensive tackle rotation is going to be deep this season. The addition of Phillip Paea ensures they have multiple players that can make life difficult for teams that want to run inside against Oklahoma’s defense.

Oklahoma Sooners make top 12 for 2024 DL Jayden Jackson

The Oklahoma Sooners were included in the top 12 for 2024 three-star defensive tackle Jayden Jackson.

Oklahoma is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of talent in the 2024 recruiting cycle. At the end of March, the Sooners offered a three-star defensive lineman from the IMG Academy, [autotag]Jayden Jackson[/autotag]. The Sooners were included in Jackson’s top 12 released Monday morning.

His top 12 included Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, Miami, Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Tennessee, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wisconsin.

Jackson is a 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle that is the definition of a people mover. He is quick off the line of scrimmage and displays really good play strength. Jackson can dart through the line to get into the backfield or utilize his strength to defeat double teams at the point of attack.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been heavily invested in stockpiling talent along their defensive line. In 2022, they brought in blue-chip talents like [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag]. They also added intriguing three-star prospects [autotag]Ashton Sanders[/autotag], [autotag]Taylor Wein[/autotag], and [autotag]Markus Strong[/autotag].

As they continue their pursuit of blue-chip defensive linemen [autotag]David Stone[/autotag], [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag], and [autotag]Nigel Smith[/autotag], the Sooners are also looking to add Jackson, who holds offers from the top recruiting schools in the country. Jackson played with Stone in 2022 at IMG Academy, and it looks like the two wouldn’t mind playing together at the college level.

‘This should be easy now’: Sooners legend Gerald McCoy to 2024 5-Star DL David Stone

Looking to lend a hand in the recruitment of David Stone, Sooners legend Gerald McCoy made his recruiting pitch to the elite DL prospect.

Still looking to break the ice on their first commitment of the 2024 recruiting cycle, the Oklahoma Sooners are beginning to trend in the right direction for several prospects. Since completing their junior day this past weekend, Oklahoma’s picked up predictions from recruiting analysts for two talented 2024 recruits.

Josh McCuistion of SoonersScoop.com and Rivals issued a FutureCast predicting the Sooners to land three-star running back Xavier Robinson. That was followed up by Parker Thune of OUInsider and 247Sports issuing a crystal ball favoring the Sooners to land five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri.

Nwaneri, a top 10 prospect in the 2024 class, is one of the most important names to watch this cycle.

Another player to watch over the next few months is also an elite interior defensive line prospect, [autotag]David Stone[/autotag]. Stone, a five-star player out of Del City has long been considered a priority for the Sooners. And it looks like a former Oklahoma Sooners’ defensive tackle is making it a priority himself.

[autotag]Gerald McCoy[/autotag], who starred for the Oklahoma Sooners at the tail end of [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag]’ tenure at defensive tackle, made his thoughts known on where Stone should play his collegiate ball.

“Welp!! This should be easy now,” McCoy wrote on Twitter. “And you never know who might show up to help you get right!! SEE YOU SOON!!”

To which David Stone simply replied, “Soon…”.

McCoy, the former third overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, had a long and distinguished career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a centerpiece of Brent Venables’ defense and a key component to Oklahoma’s run at the BCS Championship in 2008. If there’s a former player that can speak to what a Brent Venables defense can do for a defensive lineman, it’s Gerald McCoy.

All of this comes after Michigan State‘s pass rush coach, Brandon Jordan, was hired away by the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. Jordan, a private pass rush specialist, has worked with some of the best defensive linemen in the NFL, including Chandler Jones, Von Miller, and T.J. Watt, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Jordan’s departure follows the Spartans’ loss of their defensive line coach Marco Coleman to Georgia Tech in January.

It remains to be seen if this will have much of an impact on the recruitment of Stone, who said after the coaching change that he still has love for Michigan State. He’s planning a visit to East Lansing with his family along with friend and Sooners’ target [autotag]Mykel Patterson-McDonald[/autotag].

It remains to be seen how this all works out. Oklahoma will have to contend with Mel Tucker and the Spartans till the very end. And then there’s the wild card visit to Texas A&M that Stone took recently.

As we saw in the David Hicks recruitment, the Aggies will be a thorn in the side of every elite defensive line recruitment.

After missing out on Hicks in the 2023 cycle, the Sooners need to hit a home run with their interior defensive line recruiting in the 2024 cycle. Especially as they prepare for life in the SEC. The Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide have proven time and time again the importance of being stout in the trenches.

If Oklahoma can add Stone to what they did in the 2023 cycle with [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag], it will help put them in a much better position to be a force up front on defense in the years to come.

Oklahoma offers four-star interior defensive lineman D’Antre Robinson out of Florida

Oklahoma continues to plant its feet firmly in the Florida recruiting landscape as they offer four-star defensive tackle, D’Antre Robinson.

Florida was very lucrative to the Oklahoma Sooners in the class of 2023. With the staff’s comfort recruiting in the Sunshine State, it makes sense they would be right back there for the class of 2024.

The Class of 2023 gave the Sooners CB Makari Vickers (early enrollee), DL Derrick LeBlanc (early enrollee), LB Lewis Carter, WR Keyon Brown, and defensive lineman Markus Strong. All are from Florida. With that success, why would Oklahoma not go back to the well?

The Sooners believe they can replicate that success in 2024 and reached out to offer four-star defensive tackle D’Antre Robinson out of Orlando, Florida.

Robinson is a true space eater in the interior. He has decent lateral quickness and is disruptive at the point of attack. Robinson’s natural strength allows him to stonewall opposing offensive linemen and effectively eliminate them from moving him off his spot. That frees up his teammates to go and make plays and attack the ball carrier.

He played AAU basketball. The athleticism required to play basketball at that level is on full display. With his frame, it is reasonable to believe he could still add anywhere from 10-15 pounds if necessary. The extra pounds would help significantly if he plays along the interior for an SEC team.

Dolphins lose assistant DL coach, hire Western Kentucky’s Kenny Baker

The Cardinals have hired Derrick LeBlanc.

As the NFL offseason continues, the Miami Dolphins coaching staff is everchanging.

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Arizona Cardinals are hiring Dolphins assistant defensive line coach Derrick LeBlanc to become their defensive line coach.

LeBlanc came to Miami in 2022 after spending 21 years coaching collegiately with stops at Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU and a number of other schools.

To take his place, the Dolphins are hiring Western Kentucky’s defensive line coach Kenny Baker.

Baker was originally hired by Western Kentucky in 2020 as defensive ends coach after spending time with Chattanooga and Mercer. He played for Gardner-Webb from 2005-08.

Add another coach to Vic Fangio’s staff.

Cardinals hiring Dolphins assistant DL coach Derrick LeBlanc as DL coach

LeBlanc, although with only one year in the NFL as a coach, has been a coach for the last 22 years.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon promised “major, major experience” on his new coaching staff. While most of his staff are holding positions they have not previously held, there are some assistants coming onto the coaching staff with no shortage of experience.

The latest is Derrick LeBlanc.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Cardinals are hiring him to be their defensive line coach. He was the assistant defensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2022.

LeBlanc has coached for the last 22 years but 2022 was his first in the NFL.

He started as a graduate assistant at LSU in 2000. From 2001-2007, he coached defensive lines for Henderson State, Arkansas State and Missouri Tech.

He was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for LSU from 2008-2011 and went back to coaching defensive linemen in 2012 for Wyoming. He was defensive line coach in 2013-2014 for Southern Mississippi and added defensive coordinator to his title in 2015 for Pearl River Community College.

He was defensive line coach in 2016 and for North Texas in 2017-2019 and then in 2020 for Arkansas.
