Hey, remember that time in the late 1990s when Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez posed with other star shortstops without shirts and with gold chains?
No?
If you don’t: It was a Sports Illustrated shot from the famous Walter Iooss Jr., who snapped Jeter, Rodriguez, Edgar Renteria, Alex Gonzalez and Rey Ordonez, all topless, all looking kind of awkward. It became a punchline, and rightfully so.
Well, on Sunday night, during the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball alternative broadcast known as KayRod, producers brought up the photo on screen while Jeter visited with Rodriguez and Michael Kay, and wow, it was hilariously awkward:
What players are atop the list of all-time home run leaders for the New York Yankee?
Babe Ruth leads the way but what other New York Yankees sluggers are on the list of those who hit the most home runs in Pinstripes? They earned the nickname Bronx Bombers and here is why.
Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Miguel Angel Jiménez are tied atop the leaderboard at the American Family Insurance Championship.
MADISON, WI. — It seemed like Saturday was set up for the megawatt personalities at the PGA Tour Champions’ American Family Insurance Championship at University Ridge.
There was a buzz among the spectators in the late morning when two huge sports utility vehicles pulled up to the clubhouse and Derek Jeter and Brett Favre popped out.
Those bold-faced names took part in the celebrity foursome alongside Juli Inkster and Andy North. Several uniformed police officers accompanied them to the driving range as fans in New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers gear clamored for autographs.
Even in the regular field, there was some star power grabbing pieces of the spotlight, with fan-favorite John Daly tying for the second-lowest round.
But when the second round was over, it was a relatively unknown golfer, Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, who was tied atop the leaderboard with a more familiar name in Miguel Angel Jiménez at 10-under 134.
There are plenty of golfers within striking distance, so it could be a tight finish on Sunday.
Jaidee had a workmanlike effort with the lowest round at 7-under 65. Jiménez boasts a little more pizzazz with his ponytail, bespoke shoes and animated gestures.
“I’m going to have a bit of wine like every night,” Jiménez said after his 4-under 68. “Like every night, we’re going to enjoy the night and at 7:30 we have our dinner like every day. Have a cigar afterwards and go to sleep like a baby.”
Daly always attracts a cult following with his bushy beard, multi-colored pants and ever-present Diet Cokes and cigarettes. After a 71 in the first round, he fired a bogey-free, 6-under 66.
“I made a few putts here and there, hit a lot of fairways, but the guys are going low,” Daly said. “It’s hard to win out here.”
Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly lacking energy at Am Fam Championship
Local celebrities Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly, the two-time defending champion, will be hard-pressed to contend for this year’s title.
Stricker shot a 3-under 69 and sits six shots behind the leaders.
“Had some opportunities there that I didn’t really take advantage of,” Stricker said. “Especially on the back nine: 11, 12, 13. Yeah, it was a little bit better today, but didn’t really get it in the hole very well at times. But it was better.”
The Edgerton native and Madison resident is balancing his duties as tournament host while trying to find consistency on the course after coming back from a serious illness.
“That’s been the problem with me since I’ve been back is just getting fired up,” Stricker said. “I missed a little putt at I guess it would have been 13 and hit it in there to 3, 4 feet. Missed it. Go back on the tee and beat up the tee a little bit. Then I finally get some energy and emotion.
“That’s what I’ve been lacking a little bit of, that mentality like I had before. And I don’t know why, it kind of comes and goes and I’m kind of going through the motions at times. It was better at times today, but still, it’s not my fiery self at times.”
Kelly is in better position at three shots back after also shooting a 69, but he can relate to the lack of energy. He’s coming off a playoff victory at the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines, Iowa.
“I’m just tired,” Kelly said. “Normally I’m jacked. I really haven’t gotten as much adrenaline. I mean, that par on 17 got me about as excited as I’ve been this week. The eagle did yesterday on 16.”
Derek Jeter, Juli Inkster beat Brett Favre, Andy North in celebrity foursome
The star attractions of the day — Favre and Jeter — were at ease in the spotlight. Favre even tossed some footballs to fans on the 14th hole. The pairing of Jeter and Inkster beat Favre and North over nine holes, leading to a lot of good-natured gibes afterward.
“I had a blast as always,” Favre said. “I’m honored to be asked back to play in this year in and year out. My back was not cooperating. I’m not making excuses, I suck anyway.
“But I was glad I was able to fight through it and play. It’s always great to be back in Wisconsin and see the fans, especially how they support their athletics.”
Before we get to that, I have to shout out his bio: “Sleep-deprived father to three amazing girls. HOF Class of 2020.”
I love that! Family first, then baseball!
But yes, let’s get to his first tweet: On Tuesday, The Captain sent one out quote-tweeting someone who said that Jeter had no excuse not to have a Twitter account.
That tweet? It’s from December of 2014. Guess someone found it for him … or he kept some receipts? Here you go:
Ken Griffey Jr., Tino Martinez, Jorge Posada, CC Sabathia, Paige Spiranac and Ryan Rustand were all on hand.
Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter hosted the 2022 Derek Jeter Celebrity Invitational golf tournament at Baha Mar Resorts in Nassau, Bahamas, from April 28 through May 1. The tournament raised more than $1 million for Jeter’s foundation, Turn 2 Foundation. This event was hosted in partnership with Baha Mar, Icon International, JP Sports + Entertainment and Warner Brothers Discovery.
The Turn 2 Foundation works with young kids in different communities to inspire and motivate them to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “Turn 2” a healthy lifestyle through community service, various specialized programs and events.
The celebrities in attendance ranged from professional athletes, entertainers, media personalities, influencers, trick-shot artists and more. Anthony Anderson, D-Nice, Ken Griffey Jr., Tino Martinez, Jorge Posada, CC Sabathia, Joey Fatone, Paige Spiranac and Ryan Rustand were just a few of the notable names of the weekend.
A reception was held on the first night at Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House. The reception was hosted by Hall of Fame radio personality, Angie Martinez and featured music from award-winning DJ, D-Nice. The Turn 2 Foundation presented $25,000 to the Baha Mar Foundation, which will support youth development and healthy lifestyle initiatives in the local Nassau area. The venue served a seafood buffet, comfort foods, cocktails, appetizers, and desserts.
The weekend consisted of two rounds of golf at Royal Blue Golf Club of Baha Mar Resorts. Royal Blue is a Jack Nicklaus design with carpet-like fairways, rolling white sand dunes, fluffy bunkers, waterfront holes and untouched greens. The event featured closest to the pin contests, long drive contests, multiple bar stations and food stations. The Turn 2 Foundation team brought a party to every hole. Following round one of the tournament, the celebrities competed in a competitive shootout.
After the second round, the event’s signature DJCI Gala at Baha Mar’s Performing Arts & Convention Center took place. Guests experienced a star-filled red carpet, enjoyed a lobster and filet mignon dinner and were able to bid on live auctions. The evening closed with a performance from Grammy award-winning International artist, Pitbull.
Guests had the option of staying in one of the three hotels at the Baha Mar Resort, the Grand Hyatt, Rosewood or SLS. Baha Mar has over 2,300 rooms, more than 45 restaurants, over 30 retail shops, miniature golf, bars, water park, 100,000 square foot casino, spa, fitness center, kid zone, multiple pools and private beach entrances. The Turn 2 event used to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, but they selected Baha Mar as a more family-friendly location.
Each hotel within Baha Mar has a different energy. The Grand Hyatt is family-friendly and has access to different activities that will keep the kids busy and the adults relaxed. The Rosewood is elegant and quieter. This hotel features upscale bars, tea lounges and calming scents. SLS is a more modern, high-energy environment with pool clubs, nightclubs and rooftop bars. As a guest of Baha Mar, you have access to most of the other hotel’s amenities.
“I think a lot of the Icon International sponsors and clients thought it would be great to go to a place with more family involvement,” said Sharlee Jeter, Derek’s sister. We thought it would be nice where you could bring your family this time and it acts as a vacation also.”
The tournament concluded with an 18-hole celebrity-only tournament on May 1 at Royal Blue. When asked about his favorite part of the weekend, Jeter said, “You always hear how athletes and entertainers talk about how good they are at golf and then you actually see how bad they are, that’s always a highlight.”
The ballclub often lauded for its class was intent on making sure another superstar wouldn’t get the chance for a similar moment.
In front of a packed Comerica Park crowd, and with Miguel Cabrera coming up to bat in the eighth inning looking for his 3,000th hit, Yankees manager Aaron Boone pulled the type of move New York fans would never forgive if it happened to them: Boone intentionally walked Miggy.
The incredulous silence on the Tigers’ broadcast says it all.
Without context, the decision is understandable. First was open, there were two outs and loading the bases could help New York get out of the inning in a one-run game.
With context, yikes, that’s a bad look.
Boone is trying to do his job and win a game, but the Tigers are very much in a rebuilding year and Miggy’s milestone was one of the few reasons for fans to get out to the park on a Thursday in April. And you better believe they let Boone know what they thought of his decision.

I'm not big on baseball’s unwritten rules or whatever but there has to be one that Aaron Boone just violated about intentionally walking a guy sitting on 2,999 hits, right? That moment was bigger than this game & to think otherwise is lame.
There are certainly a lot more reactions on social media and the vast majority are not safe for work.
Now, did Miggy already have three chances at the plate on Thursday? Sure. Did he go 0-for-3? Yes. Does that matter here? Absolutely not. And the Yankees should’ve just pitched to him.
Instead, they opted to face lefty Austin Meadows, who promptly made Boone pay for his decision.
Boone is just lucky the Tigers have another series at home beginning on Friday. He might still be booed in Detroit forever after pulling this move on Thursday.
His tenure ends with the Marlins having a bright future.
Derek Jeter is saying 2o long to the Miami Marlins.
The CEO of the Major League Baseball franchise announced on Monday that he and the Marlins “are officially ending our relationship” and that he’d also divest his shares in the club.
It’s curious timing. Since he stepped in back in 2017, Jeter was part of a tear-it-down-and-start-all-over rebuild that was leading to paying off soon. Their pitching staff is filled with prospects who were breaking out. The lineup had some noteworthy names, including some they had dealt for before the 2022 lockout.
In his statement — see below — there’s something about how the vision for the future was different than the one he signed up for. Hmm.
So let’s take a look back at Jeter’s tenure as he exits with some noteworthy moves made while he was CEO:
There has never been a position player to earn unanimous entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but Derek Jeter came awfully close.
Given his popularity amongst baseball writers and his spot in history as one of the best shortstops to play the game, Jeter’s chances of matching longtime teammate Mariano Rivera with the unanimous vote looked solid.
Jeter ended up drawing 396 votes out of the 397 ballots submitted for 2020’s class, which was good for the highest vote share for a position player. But that one vote — the voter remained anonymous — was glaring. Still, Jeter managed to laugh at the whole situation during his Hall of Fame speech on Wednesday.
“Thank you to the baseball writers — all but one of you — who voted for me.”
The joke drew plenty of laughs and a long applause. And it was honestly a great way to address the snub. After all, if players like Ken Griffey Jr. and Greg Maddux couldn’t get a unanimous share of first-ballot votes, then coming one vote short is still beyond impressive.
Hopefully that one voter — whomever it may be — had a laugh at that line too.
I never really understood the comparisons the kids make between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. They never really made much sense to me.
Mostly because they played two different sports. How are we comparing Cleveland Cavaliers legend, LeBron James, to Birmingham Barons legend , Michael Jordan? That just doesn’t seem right.
The latter made a rare public appearance on Wednesday when he was spotted in Cooperstown to celebrate his buddy, Derek Jeter, who was being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was looking as cool as ever with his shades on and those hoop earrings. Y’all know how Mike does it.
— National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum ⚾ (@baseballhall) September 8, 2021
Smooth. Much smoother than his baseball swing, that’s for sure. Although, I will say, batting .202 at 31-years old fresh off of the basketball court really isn’t that bad.
Just had to get a little Michael Jordan praise in there before he actually reads this. I don’t want to end up like LaBradford Smith, of course.
Regardless, this is cool. It’s rare we see Mike out like this. But it’s also just really awesome to see two legendary baseball players supporting one another.
