Another former Clemson wide receiver was waived by an NFL team on Tuesday.

The Baltimore Ravens announced they have waived Deon Cain.

NFL teams had to cut their rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday. Former Clemson wideout Cornell Powell was also waived, by the Chiefs.

Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 6th round (185th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, Cain also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2019-20) before the Ravens signed him to a reserves/futures contract in January. He was injured for most of training camp and returned only for the third preseason game, catching one pass for 5 yards.

At Clemson, Cain had 130 receptions for 2,040 yards and 20 touchdowns over 42 games (14 starts) in his career from 2015-17.

Ravens reportedly cut multiple WRs ahead of cutdown day deadline

The Ravens reportedly made a few roster moves ahead of the Tuesday cutdown day deadline

The Baltimore Ravens will have to trim their roster to 53 players by Tuesday, August 31st at 4pm EST. Multiple tough decisions await Baltimore, as there are many talented players who deserve to make the team, but won’t because of how little space is available throughout the roster, as well as more depth needed at certain positions.

The Ravens already made a handful of moves leading up to Tuesday, but as the deadline quickly approaches, more will be reported and announced. On, Monday it was reported that Baltimore had parted ways with three wide receivers.

The Ravens brought in a plethora of new receivers over the past few months, especially recently due to injuries at the position. However, with players such as Brown returning to practice, the wideouts brought in for depth purposes are no longer needed.

Cain was signed to a reserve/futures deal in January of 2021. He had a nice start to training camp for Baltimore before being sidelined with an injury for multiple weeks. He recently returned to the field and suited up in the Ravens’ final preseason game, but struggled to the tune of one catch for five yards on five targets, dropping multiple passes.

Gray was signed by Baltimore in June, and spent time as a return specialist for the team as well as receiver. It was unlikely he was going to make the 53-man roster.

Mariner was signed in August as depth, and was also unlikely to make the final team. All three players could be practice squad candidates.

Ar’Darius Washington has good Thursday practice, WR returns after long absence

Ar’Darius Washington impressed during Thursday’s practice, while a Ravens receiver returned after a long absence

The Baltimore Ravens will take on the Washington Football Team in Week 3 of the 2021 season as they hope to gather more information about the many talented players on the roster bubble. Cut down day will be full of tough decisions, but practice and the remaining exhibition game should make those decisions at least a tiny bit easier.

Thursday’s practice saw a receiver return to the field after a prolonged absence in Deon Cain.

Other than the injury report it was a rather uneventful day, although undrafted rookie safety Ar’Darius Washington impressed.

Thursday also marked the last day of full media practice viewing.

It’s a great thing that wide receivers coach Keith Williams was working with Washington and fellow defensive back Nigel Warrior on footwork. Even though he coaches a different position, Williams has a plethora of valuable NFL experience with a multitude of things to teach young players on both sides of the ball.

Washington stacking good performances is good for his roster standing, especially with the trade of rookie cornerback Shaun Wade. He’ll hope to have another impactful game on Saturday against Washington, as will the many other players fighting for a spot on the final team.

Ravens’ wide receivers impress during Thursday’s practice

The Baltimore Ravens have been working through plenty of injuries over the course of the first few weeks of 2021 training camp. While the team is hoping to get healthy sooner rather than later, guys sitting out have given other players opportunities to step up and make a name for themselves.

On Thursday, Baltimore was missing wide receivers Marquise Brown, Rashod Bateman, Miles Boykin and Deon Cain due to injuries. That provided the chance for players such as Sammy Watkins, James Proche II, Devin Duvernay, and Tylan Wallace to impress during reps.

Even though there were multiple deflections that resulted in interceptions, it’s encouraging to see players stepping up in the absence of so many receivers. Other guys who made big plays on Thursday included Brandon Stephens, Ar’Darius Washington, and Kristian Welch, with Lamar Jackson also having a good day of practice himself. The Ravens will play their first preseason game on Saturday against the New Orleans Saints, where a lot of guys will look to make a big impact as they try to earn a roster spot.

8 players to watch during Ravens’ Week 1 preseason game vs. Saints

The Baltimore Ravens will soon have a great chance to see how some of their practice standouts will perform in live game action. The team will face the New Orleans Saints on Saturday in their first preseason game of the 2021 season, which is another step to figuring out who will make Baltimore’s 53-man roster.

There will be plenty of players to keep an eye on over the course of the preseason, especially those who are on the roster bubble. Through a few weeks of training camp practices there have been those who have helped their stock and those who have hurt it.

Let’s dive into eight players to keep an eye on during the Ravens’ Saturday preseason game against New Orleans.

Steelers practice squad 2020: Pittsburgh protects 4 practice squad players for Week 6

A new concept for the 2020 season is the “protected” practice squad. Here are the four players the Steelers chose to protect.

The Steelers must like what they have going as far as practice squad protections. There are no changes from Week 5 to 6 for protected players. Pittsburgh has tabbed wide receiver Deon Cain, linebacker Jayrone Elliott, defensive end Henry Mondeaux and running back Wendell Smallwood. These four are not eligible to sign with another team until after Sunday’s game.

Practice squad “protection” is a new concept for the 2020 season. It’s a concession for the potential personnel shortages that could occur if the virus strikes the locker room.

Teams can designate protected players each Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m., except for clubs that played on the previous Monday night; their designations go into effect prior to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Steelers continue their 2020 season Sunday, Oct. 18 versus the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field.

Steelers shuffle bench players on 53-man roster

The Steelers added a wide receiver and running back on Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers did their usual weekly roster shuffle a little ahead of schedule this time around. With injuries at running back and wide receiver, the Steelers made a pair of moves on Saturday.

Gone are linebacker Jayrone Elliott and running back Tony Brooks-James. In their place are running back Kerrith Whyte Jr. and wide receiver Deon Cain.

Whyte played his college ball at Florida Atlantic and was a seventh-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2019. The Steelers signed Whyte from the Bears practice squad.

The Steelers signed Cain from the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. Cain joined the Colts in 2018 but before he could show off his speed and athleticism he tore his ACL.

Steelers sign WR Deon Cain off Colts practice squad

Deon Cain has a new home.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed wide receiver Deon Cain off of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad and will now join their active roster.

Cain, who has struggled to make an impact, was waived before the Week 10 game against the Miami Dolphins and was signed to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

Though it seemed he would be getting a second chance to make something of his career with the Colts, that stops quickly as he now joins the Steelers wide receiver corps, per Field Yates of ESPN.

A sixth-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft, there was a lot of hope Cain would use his extreme athletic ability, size and speed to carve out a role in the offense.

However, that never came to fruition. A torn ACL ended Cain’s rookie season before it even began and even though he had plenty of opportunities to grab a significant role this season, he failed to do so.

In seven games this season, Cain has four receptions on 14 targets for 52 yards. The Colts loved his upside as a deep threat, but his route running and consistency are two major aspects that need development in Cain’s game.

As the Colts look to push for a playoff spot in the second half of this regular season, Cain will be with his new team in the Steelers looking to make something of his career.

Colts add 4 players to the practice squad

The Colts make some changes to their practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts made four additions to the practice squad, including wide receiver Deon Cain, defensive tackle Kyle Peko, running back Darius Jackson and offensive tackle Gerhard de Beer.

The news of Cain and Peko was given on Monday. Both players were waived before the Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins. As they cleared waivers, the Colts decided to bring both of them back.

Jackson had an earlier stint with the Colts this season in September. He was added to the practice squad after Bruce Anderson was placed on the practice squad injured list on Tuesday.

de Beer likely takes the place of Jackson Barton, who was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs active roster this week. de Beer signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. He also spent some time with the Green Bay Packers.

Colts to add WR Deon Cain to the practice squad

Deon Cain is coming back to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts are bringing wide receiver Deon Cain back to the practice squad after he cleared waivers Monday.

In what was a bit of a surprising move, the Colts waived the second-year wide receiver on Saturday ahead of the Week 10 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

Head coach Frank Reich told reporters during a conference call Monday that the team wanted to bring Cain back if he cleared waivers. The Clemson product did, and he will now be joining the practice squad.

After missing his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL, Cain was looking to take a hold of the opportunity put in front of him in Year 2. With various injuries hitting the wide receiver position, the former sixth-round pick had a chance to carve out a role.

However, he failed to do so through the first eight games of the season. He caught just four passes on 14 targets for 52 yards.

There is still a lot of development that needs to take place before Cain becomes an impact player, and he will get the chance to do so on the practice squad.
