5 things to know about Ole Miss prior to Week 7 meeting with LSU

LSU will square off with Ole Miss on Saturday night. Here are five things to know about the Rebels.

Things are changing throughout the sport of college football but the LSU vs. Ole Miss rivalry remains an annual staple. The programs have met 112 times in their storied histories. It’s a series with a tendency to produce SEC classics.

That’s what we saw last year when LSU dropped a 55-49 shootout in Oxford. [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] threw for 414 yards and ran for 99 more, but it wasn’t enough thanks to LSU allowing over 706 total yards on defense.

LSU fans who watched that game should be familiar with this Ole Miss offense. QB Jaxson Dart and WR Tre Harris are still here and Lane Kiffin’s offensive style is no secret.

Ole Miss hit the transfer portal hard and it’s a team with plenty of new pieces, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Today, we’ll take a look at five things LSU fans should know about Ole Miss prior to the top 25 showdown on Saturday night.

Ole Miss season to this point

Ole Miss began the year ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll with many calling this team a national title contender. The Rebels won their first four games by a combined score of 220-22. The competition wasn’t stiff, but the dominance was noteworthy nonetheless.

When conference play began, Ole Miss ran into a hiccup, dropping one at home to Kentucky. The Rebel defense held UK to 4.43 yards per play but surrendered a 63-yard pass to set up a touchdown when it mattered late.

On offense, Ole Miss turned the ball over and took four sacks. Tre Harris produced, but Dart didn’t play his best game.

Ole Miss bounced back with a win over South Carolina last week. The OM interior defensive line dominated and Ole Miss didn’t allow a touchdown.

Dart completed just 51.9% of his passes and his PFF passing grade ranked 11th among SEC QBs in Week 6, but it was enough to get the job done.

That brings Ole Miss to 5-1 entering the showdown with LSU.

Tre Harris is still doing damage

Tre Harris caught eight passes for 153 yards and a score against LSU last year. Most of that production came in key moments to keep Ole Miss on the field and in the game.

Harris did most of his work against [autotag]Laterrence Welch[/autotag] and [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] while [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag] and [autotag]Ashton Stamps[/autotag] held up fine. Welch and Harris aren’t with LSU anymore, but Alexander and Stamps are.

With 885 receiving yards after week six, Harris leads the SEC. He’s catching 81.3% of his targets and his 5.67 yards per route run are nearly a yard better than the SEC’s second-best. He’s putting together a Biletnikoff campaign.

The Ole Miss offense runs through Harris. If LSU allows him to get going, it will be a long night for the Tigers.

Ole Miss is good on the interior defensive line

Ole Miss’ group of interior defensive linemen is one of the best in the SEC. Walter Nolen and JJ Pegues lead all SEC defensive tackles with 17 and 14 pressures, respectively.

Nolen was disruptive last week, forcing seven pressures and coming up with two sacks against South Carolina.

According to PFF, four of the SEC’s best five run-defending defensive tackles play for Ole Miss. Pegues and Nolen rank first and second in the conference in run defense grade while William Echoles and Zxavian Harris aren’t that far behind.

With Nolen and Pegues forming one of the best duos in the SEC, this DT unit is dangerous.

Ole Miss leads the nation in explosive play rate

Counting explosive plays as 20+ yard passes or 10+ yard runs, Ole Miss leads the FBS with an explosive play rate of 19.2%. Nearly every fifth play is an explosive play at that clip.

That’s trouble for an LSU defense that struggles to limit big plays on the ground. The good news is that Ole Miss wasn’t quite as explosive vs Kentucky and South Carolina, the two real defenses it faced.

LSU will get aggressive on Saturday night, so some big plays are expected. LSU needs to generate enough big plays of its own to keep up.

Players to watch

You know Jaxson Dart is the QB and Tre Harris is the guy on offense. We mentioned the group at defensive tackle, too. Here are some other names to keep an eye on.

LB Chris Paul: The Arkansas transfer is playing like one of the best LBs in the country right now. He has 18 pressures and 26 stops to go along with a forced fumble. He’s impacting the game in every phase.

RB Henry Parrish Jr: He was questionable last week, but ended up playing and carried it 21 times for 81 yards and a score. Parrish leads the SEC in runs of 10 or more yards with 21 on the year.

RT Micah Pettus: Now in his third year with Ole Miss, Pettus ranks third among SEC tackles in PFF run blocking grade.

Former Texas A&M and LSU CB Denver Harris has found a new home for the 2024 season

It has been announced that former Texas A&M and LSU cornerback Denver Harris will transfer to UTSA ahead of the 2024 season.

Former 2022 5-star cornerback Denver Harris has had quite the college football career, coming off of brief stints with Texas A&M and LSU during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before entering the transfer portal, looking for a fresh start elsewhere.

Back in early January, it was reported that Harris had been scheduled to visit College Station for a potential return, and as surprising as the news was, this was before new head coach Mike Elko had acquired four cornerbacks through the portal, but Harris would opt not to visit the Aggies after all.

With his options limited, Harris is still an elite talent with NFL potential, and as of Tuesday, it has been announced that he will transfer to UTSA and join Roadrunners head coach Jeff Traylor for the 2024 season.

During his short college career, Harris has accumulated 21 tackles (16 solo tackles) and five pass deflections in two collegiate seasons. Looking at Traylor’s track record of developing NFL corners, look no further than current Seattle Seahawks CB Tariq “Riq” Woolen.

Former LSU defensive back Denver Harris transfers to UTSA

Denver Harris is heading to his third school in as many years.

Former LSU cornerback [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] has found a new home.

On Tuesday, Harris committed to UTSA after entering the transfer portal following his lone season at LSU. The news was first reported by UTSA Insider’s JJ Perez.

A transfer from Texas A&M, Harris was a former five-star recruit and entered this season with high expectations after appearing in five games as a true freshman with the Aggies.

However, he dealt with suspensions during his time in College Station, and that seemed to follow him to Baton Rouge. He appeared in five games with three starts early in the year, but he never saw the field again after a win over Auburn on Oct. 14 as he was away from the team for personal reasons.

He finished his lone season at LSU with seven tackles and two pass breakups. Now, he’ll head to San Antonio with two remaining years of eligibility.

A trio of transfer portal defenders will join Texas A&M’s visitor list this weekend

Former Florida linebacker Scooby Williams and cornerback Jaydon Hill join cornerbacks Denver Harris and Julian Humphrey to visit Texas A&M this weekend.

Good news regarding Texas A&M’s potential transfer portal additions is on the horizon, as head coach Mike Elko and his new staff are set to host a long list of experienced players looking for a new collegiate destination. As of Tuesday evening, three more defenders will make their way to College Station.

After the surprising news that former LSU and Texas A&M cornerback Denver Harris would be joining the visitors’ list after failing to live up to his lofty recruiting expectations at both SEC programs, it has been confirmed by 247Sports’ Matt Zentiz that two former Florida defenders, linebacker Scooby Williams and cornerback Jaydon Hill will join former Georgia cornerback Julian Humphrey in Aggieland this weekend.

Coincidentally, new Aggies defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was recently the linebackers coach at Florida for the last two seasons and is obviously, as sophomore Scooby Williams is coming off an impressive 2023 season with 52 tackles and a sack, while junior Jaydon Hill recorded 39 tackles and three pass deflections on the year.

Julian Humphrey’s decision to enter the portal is somewhat surprising after initially stating that he would stay at Georgia, as the former Top-100-ranked prospect from the 2023 recruiting class is a Clear Lake, Texas native who revealed to AggiesToday that he will join Williams, Hill, and Harris in College Station, while also planning to visit Texas in the coming weeks.

Report: Former LSU and Aggies CB Denver Harris will visit Texas A&M this week

It has been confirmed that former LSU and Texas A&M cornerback Denver Harris is visit the Aggies this week.

Texas A&M is in dire need of additions at cornerback after 2023 starting CBs Tyreek Chappell and Deuce Harmon (transferred to SMU) departed the program last month, as new head coach Mike Elko’s inaugural season in College Station cannot deal with the same issues that consistently plagued the Aggies in 2023.

While Elko has already offered a bevy of veteran corners from the transfer portal, rumors regarding former Texas A&M and LSU CB Denver Harris potentially returning to Aggieland made waves, as the talented sophomore transferred from the Aggies after the 2022 season for the Tigers, only to leave LSU midway through the 2023 campaign.

Well, said rumors have become a reality as Rivals’ A&M insider Landyn Rosow reported that Harris will make his way back to College Station this week, which was further confirmed by 247Sports, Matt Zenitz on Tuesday night.

Harris has accumulated 21 tackles (16 solo tackles) and five pass deflections in two collegiate seasons. As a former five-star blue chip prospect in the Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class, new CB Coach Ishmael Aristide may be the perfect fit to get Harris back on track and finally reach his incredibly high ceiling.

Former LSU cornerback Duce Chestnut returning to Syracuse

Duce Chestnut is going back to Syracuse after one season at LSU.

After one year at LSU in which he appeared in just four games, cornerback [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag] is returning to Syracuse.

One of the top additions in LSU’s transfer portal class last offseason, Chestnut was expected to occupy a starting role in the secondary this season.

However, he came off the bench in each of his four appearances before spending the rest of the season away from the team. Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] wouldn’t go into specifics on his absence or that of fellow transfer cornerback [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag], but he said he would meet with both following the regular season.

Last week, they both entered the transfer portal.

Chestnut started in 24 games for the Orange and was named a Freshman All-American and the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021. He was also a two-time All-ACC selection, and now he’s rejoining a program that has a lot of momentum right now under new head coach and elite recruiter [autotag]Fran Brown[/autotag].

In one season with the Tigers, he had six total tackles with an interception.

Report: LSU cornerback Denver Harris is back in the transfer portal

Denver Harris appeared in the first five games, starting three, but he spent the remainder of the season away from the team.

After just one season at LSU, [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] is back in the transfer portal.

A former five-star prospect in the 2022 class who signed with Texas A&M, Harris was one of the most anticipated offseason additions in the Tigers’ transfer portal class ahead of this season.

The Houston native appeared in the first five games of the season, starting three of them, but he was sidelined for the rest of the year for undisclosed reasons. He previously dealt with disciplinary issues during his stint with the Aggies.

Harris’ departure isn’t exactly unexpected, especially as it comes just a day after cornerback [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag], another transfer who spent most of the year away from the team, re-entered the portal.

Harris totaled seven tackles in 2023 and defended two passes. He will have two remaining years of eligibility at his next stop.

LSU cornerback Duce Chestnut re-enters the transfer portal

Duce Chestnut appeared in just four games during his lone season in Baton Rouge.

After spending one year at LSU, cornerback [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag] is back in the transfer portal, he announced via his Twitter account on Tuesday.

One of the most anticipated portal additions last offseason, Chestnut was a two-time All-SEC selection at Syracuse and was expected to take over a starting role this season.

Chestnut appeared in the first four games of the season, starting none of them, but he wouldn’t appear the rest of the year as coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] was murky about his status aside from confirming he remained with the team.

Kelly said he would meet with both Chestnut and [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag], who was also away from the team for most of the year, following the season. Harris has not yet announced his intentions.

In four games with the Tigers this fall, Chestnut totaled six tackles (one for loss) an interception and a pass defended.

LSU cornerbacks Duce Chestnut, Denver Harris will miss bowl game, decision on futures with program not made

The Tigers added two of the top transfer portal cornerbacks this offseason, but both have been away from the team for undisclosed reasons.

LSU’s secondary had a lot of struggles in 2023, and much of that stemmed from the unavailability of two players it was expecting to play key roles.

Transfer cornerback additions [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] and [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag] began the year with the team and each registered starts, but they’ve since been away from the team for undisclosed reasons.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] confirmed that neither would play in LSU’s bowl game. Whether they will be on the roster beyond this season hasn’t been decided yet as Kelly said the staff will meet with both players individually after the semester.

“We have not sat down with them,” Kelly said. “We’re going to wait until the end of the semester and then we’ll sit down and have individual conversations with both of them.”

Harris, a former five-star who came from Texas A&M, was suspended multiple times as a true freshman with the Aggies last year. Chestnut came from Syracuse where he was an All-ACC selection.

Those players being unavailable and a season-ending injury to Zy Alexander have caused LSU to rely on quite a bit of youth in the secondary, and the results speak for itself.

It remains to be seen if the duo will return in 2024 to shore up the depth in the defensive backfield.

Brian Kelly expresses confidence in his defensive backs despite being shorthanded

The injury report for this weekend’s high-profile matchup against Alabama was released Monday morning, and it isn’t good news for the secondary.

The injury report for this weekend’s high-profile matchup against Alabama was released Monday morning. Out of LSU’s four transfer portal defensive backs still available ([autotag]JK Johnson[/autotag] suffered an injury before the season started), only [autotag]Andre Sam[/autotag] is going to play.

[autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag], [autotag]Denver Harris[/autotag] and [autotag]Duce Chestnut[/autotag] are all out.

Even with all of those injuries, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] still believes that his secondary is capable of getting the job done. Sam, [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] and others will have to step up in a big way to stop Jalen Milroe, Jermaine Burton and the rest of the Tide offense.

Alabama doesn’t have the best offense in the country, as a matter of fact, LSU does. The Tide have had issues blocking for Milroe. Left Tackle has been a big point of contention for the Tide and Tommy Rees is still working out who fits best at what position. LSU/Alabama will kick off at 6:45 on Saturday night.
