Kendrick Lamar dropped the music video for ‘Not Like Us’ and it features DeMar DeRozan

DeMar DeRozan, Compton native and former Toronto Raptor, seems to have chosen a side in the rap beef.

One could easily make the argument that Kendrick Lamar’s incredibly catchy diss-record aimed at Drake is the song of the summer of 2024.

Consider that “They Not Like Us” has been on the Billboard Top 100 chart for eight weeks, it’s been streamed more than 440 million times on Spotify, it will probably be nominated for a Grammy according to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason, it has spawned several memes, and athletes from LeBron James to Russell Westbrook have publicly rocked with it. Even a LA Dodgers player used it as a walk-up song.

Simply put, Kendrick created a memorable banger and handed Drake a giant L.

And now, there’s a new level to the song.

Thursday night, the music video dropped. Within an hour, it had more than 1.7 million views on YouTube.

Warning: NSFW lyrics.

It contains several more not-so-subtle shots at Drake, and also features a cameo from NBA star DeMar DeRozan around the 2:43 mark.

DeRozan, you might remember, spent the first nine seasons of his career playing for Drake’s hometown team, the Toronto Raptors. DeRozan was a fan favorite of sorts, making four All-Star teams and helping the Raptors make the playoffs five times. He was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 2018 and has played for the Chicago Bulls since 2021.

In “They Not Like Us,” Kendrick raps:

“I’m glad DeRoz’ came home, y’all didn’t deserve him neither.”

DeRozan hails from Kendrick’s hometown of Compton, California, and went to USC. And he’s chosen a side in this beef, it seems, by appearing in this video.

Buha: Lakers are in trade talks with three teams

The Lakers are reportedly still working to try to upgrade their roster.

The NBA is now over 48 hours into its official free agency period, and the Los Angeles Lakers are still almost in exactly the same place they were in before it began.

Thus far, their only move has been to get young guard Max Christie to agree to a four-year, $32 million contract. They went after future Hall of Fame sharpshooter Klay Thompson, only to see him agree to join the Dallas Mavericks.

One may think this offseason can already be declared a bust for the Lakers. But there is still the possibility of a significant trade, and beat writer Jovan Buha said there are three teams they’re talking to in the hopes of swinging a roster-enhancing deal — the Portland Trail Blazers, Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz.

Via The Athletic:

“It’s too early to write the Lakers off, of course,” wrote Buha. “There’s always a chance they pull a rabbit out of a hat with a trade or signing. They have been active in recent days, discussing potential deals with Portland, Brooklyn and Utah, among other teams, according to league and team sources. Vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka tends to operate in the shadows — more so this summer than ever, according to league sources. It’s certainly possible he has a contingency plan that saves the offseason.”

The Lakers are reportedly interested in the Blazers’ Jerami Grant, an athletic two-way forward who averaged 21.0 points a game this past season. Just about any potential trade would likely have to include starting point guard D’Angelo Russell, who opted into the final year of his contract that will pay him $18.7 million.

Hanging over the Lakers organization is the free agency of LeBron James. He has reportedly been willing to take a pay cut for the right free agent, and there is one intriguing free agent still available — DeMar DeRozan.

Los Angeles appears to have just a few days left to upgrade its roster and to reach an agreement with James on a new contract.

“James wants to have his contract situation resolved by the start of the Team USA Olympics practice on Saturday in Las Vegas. That’s an unofficial deadline for Los Angeles, at least on the free-agency front.”

As far as DeRozan is concerned, the Lakers have reportedly had some communication with the forward’s agent.

Haynes: Lakers have talked to DeMar DeRozan’s agent

Are the Lakers trying to land DeMar DeRozan after striking out on Klay Thompson?

LeBron James reportedly has been willing to take a pay cut in order to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers this summer. Doing so would allow them to use their full mid-level exception on a player who could help them improve right now.

According to Dave McMenamin, James was willing to take a pay cut for someone such as Klay Thompson, James Harden or center Jonas Valanciunas. With all three players taken, the Lakers’ options are quickly dwindling.

But there is one intriguing yet imperfect option remaining: veteran star wing DeMar DeRozan. According to insider Chris Haynes, there has been communication between the Lakers and DeRozan’s agent.

“The Lakers missed out. They missed out on Klay,” Haynes said. “The Lakers felt they had a legitimate shot to get Klay. … Now they have to pivot, so who is left out there who could make sense? Someone who is a star-caliber player that LeBron James is seeking for this team for the upcoming season? DeMar DeRozan is the biggest free agent left out there on the board. It will either take a sign-and-trade or it will take the Lakers getting creative, removing some players, clearing the books to be able to get DeMar over there.

“I know there have been communication between the Lakers and DeMar’s agent Aaron Goodwin. It will either take a one-year deal, or a sign-and-trade — we can get a three-year deal.”

“So I would think, I’m speculating a little bit, I would think that their next target is DeMar DeRozan.”

DeRozan cannot stretch the floor, something that seems to be a big emphasis for the Lakers under new head coach JJ Redick. But he is a mid-range master who averaged 24.0 points and 5.3 assists a game this past season. He’s also a bona fide threat in crunch time who was fifth in the NBA in fourth-quarter points per game during the 2023-24 campaign.

DeRozan grew up in the Southland and played his college ball at the University of Southern California, so in a way, perhaps coming to the Lakers would be fitting for the 34-year-old.

DeRozan has spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Bulls while teaming up with former Laker guards Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso.

Windhorst: LeBron James may take a pay cut for DeMar DeRozan

Would DeMar DeRozan be a player who would help the Lakers become championship contenders again?

Over 24 hours after the official start of free agency in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t made any additions at all.

There was talk that they could perhaps acquire Klay Thompson, who was a big part of the foundation of the dynastic Golden State Warriors. Instead, Thompson has reportedly chosen to go to the Dallas Mavericks.

LeBron James is a free agent, and while it is generally believed he will stay with the Lakers, the question is how much money he will demand on his new contract. Dave McMenamin reported that he would be willing to take a pay cut so that L.A. could have its full mid-level exception available to use on Thompson, James Harden or center Jonas Valanciunas.

But all three are off the board now, and the team’s options are slim. One intriguing option remaining is wing DeMar DeRozan, and according to Brian Windhorst, James may be willing to take a pay cut to accommodate DeRozan.

“I think there’s more than three,” said Brian Windhorst on “The Hoop Collective” podcast of how many players James would be willing to take a pay cut for. “I think DeMar DeRozan is on that list as well. And there may be another one or so.”

DeRozan is not a 3-point shooter by any means, and people feel his defense is suspect, which means his fit on the Lakers would be questionable. But he averaged 24.0 points on 48% field-goal shooting and 5.3 assists this past season.

He’s a bona fide threat in crunch time, and he ranked fifth in fourth-quarter points per game during the 2023-24 season. If the Lakers were to figure out how to hide his lack of outside shooting, he could greatly boost their offense while significantly reducing James’ workload.

DeRozan is a free agent after making a salary approaching $30 million a year over the last several seasons. He would either have to take a major pay cut to fit into L.A.’s mid-level exception, or L.A. would have to pull off a sign-and-trade deal with the Chicago Bulls to land him.

Growing indications that DeMar DeRozan won’t be on Chicago Bulls in 2025

It is more likely that DeMar DeRozan is heading out of Chicago, though nothing is official yet.

Every professional sports team has a wider group of analysts, bloggers, podcasters, fans, people who generally make it their business to follow the daily maneuverings of that franchise. People who follow and study the Chicago Bulls will tell you that after Saturday night, all signs point to DeMar DeRozan being on his way out of Chicago for the 2024-2025 NBA season. This is something we wrote about earlier in June.

Saturday night, the Bulls reportedly inked Patrick Williams to a five-year, $90 million deal. This is a youth-movement signing which points to the team going into a full rebuild, something which was hinted at in the trade of Alex Caruso for the younger Josh Giddey. DeRozan is likely to be shipped elsewhere as the Bulls blow it all up and start over.

Hopefully, DeRozan will find an NBA championship contender where he can be an essential piece and perhaps a tipping-point presence who gets a good chance to make the NBA Finals and cap his career in style.

Does Alex Caruso trade mean Bulls will ship DeMar DeRozan elsewhere?

Will the Bulls trade DeMar DeRozan?

If you’re DeMar DeRozan, you have to think that something’s up in Chicago. The Bulls traded Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey in a straight-up swap with no picks involved. That’s a horrible trade for the Bulls … unless they are blowing it all up and going into a full rebuild. That’s the only way this trade makes sense.

Bulls Wire has commented on this:

“If the Chicago Bulls are truly committed to preparing for the future, they should let DeMar DeRozan go this summer. At the very least, they should look to sign and trade him, ushering in a new era in Chicago. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report recently listed a few teams as potential ‘best landing spots’ for DeRozan in his article titled ‘5 NBA Stars on the Wrong Team.’ He listed the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat.

“Philadelphia will be looking to reshape their roster around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the Lakers are doing the same with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and the Heat seem to be entering a weird transition period. Regardless of where he ends up, letting DeRozan go would be the best way for the Bulls to start a new era of the organization.”

We will see what happens. The NBA draft is next week, so you might see some action soon.

USC’s DeMar DeRozan can’t like what the Chicago Bulls are doing

DeMar DeRozan has to be furious with the Chicago Bulls after their trade with the OKC Thunder.

USC basketball great DeMar DeRozan has given everything to the Chicago Bulls. The franchise would not have made the NBA play-in round the past few seasons if it wasn’t for DeRozan’s late-game shotmaking and overall dependability. The Bulls needed to give DeRozan more help. Instead, they are making DeRozan’s situation and the team’s overall roster a lot worse.

Bulls Wire has more on the trade which has everyone in Chicago — and the NBA — shaking their heads. The Bulls sent Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Josh Giddey:

“Giddey is a solid playmaker who averages 13.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists while shooting 46.4% from the floor and 31% from deep for his career. He has played all three seasons with the Thunder, but will now look to help the Bulls move forward. Chicago’s plan is to acquire some playmaking in the form of Giddey as it believes he has All-Star potential.”

Giddey might have potential, but Alex Caruso is a proven NBA player who helped the Los Angeles Lakers win the 2020 NBA championship. It’s hard to see how the Bulls are better, and it’s also hard to deny that the Thunder just took a big step toward the 2025 NBA Finals with this move. DeMar DeRozan can’t be happy. He deserves better.

Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert was an epic victory lap full of nostalgia and the best kind of pettiness

The best moments from Kendrick Lamar’s The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert.

There shouldn’t have been any doubt about who won this generation’s greatest rap beef after Kendrick Lamar dropped Not Like Us to unofficially bring his war of words with Drake to an emphatic end with a chart-topping song that continues to dominate the summer airwaves.

However, if there was any remaining sliver of belief Drake made out OK, Lamar extinguished it with one incredible night of performances Wednesday at the Kia Forum for The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert. It was a show so good I wouldn’t have believed the hype this morning had I not stayed up to watch it myself on the surprisingly crispy Amazon Prime Video stream.

The four-hour concert was more than a victory lap, though. Sure, Lamar used his set to hammer home the point he won, performing Not Like Us five (FIVE!) straight times to close the show, in addition to doing Euphoria and Like That. But it was also a night of nostalgia, unity and just all around good vibes.

It opened with performances from other West Coast artists before transitioning into a set by DJ Mustard, with performances from Tyler the Creator, YG and Dom Kennedy, among so many more. Then K. Dot finally did his thing and a good night got even better.

These were the best moments from Kendrick Lamar’s finale.

Opened with Euphoria (with new lyrics)

It didn’t take long for us to learn what type of time Lamar was on, because he opened his set with what is still in my opinion the best song to come from his beef with Drake. To my knowledge this was the first time Lamar ever performed Euphoria, or any of the disses for that matter.

The energy in the arena was palpable through the screen. And not only did Lamar do the whole six-plus minute hookless song in its entirety, he added new lyrics: “Give me Tupac’s ring back and I might give you a little respect.”

Black Hippy reunion and a Money Trees performance

After taking us on a journey backwards through his catalog, from DAMN. to To Pimp a Butterfly to good kid, m.A.A.d city, Lamar landed on his 2012 hit Money Trees, which set the stage for Jay Rock to perform his popular verse before diving into some of his other hits.

But that was just the start of what turned into a nostalgic reunion of TDE’s Black Hippy, with Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q eventually joining Lamar and Rock. And of course Q had to do some of his hits too.

This meant something to some of us!

The Like That verse

This was the song that kicked off the “big three” beef, so it was a big moment to see Lamar perform his verse. And it hit just as hard in concert as it did the first time we all pressed play on the Future and Metro Boomin smash.

Unfortunately, Future was one of the few artists not in attendance to do his part of a collab. That’s the only thing that could have made this better.

A Dr. Dre set with a twist at the end

It wouldn’t have been a legendary show without having one of the West’s living legends come out, and Lamar checked that box by having Dr. Dre do a couple songs in the middle of his own set: Still D.R.E. and California Love.

But Dre wasn’t done after that. Before he left the stage, Lamar asked him if he had anything else to say. That’s when Dre broke into a whisper that’s become synonymous with the metaphorical death of Drake’s career:

“Psst. I see dead people.”

And right on cue, Lamar jumped into Not Like Us.

He did Not Like Us (x5!)

This is when the grave dancing really begun, because Lamar didn’t do Not Like Us once, twice or even three times to bring his show to a close. He did it FIVE times.

And the first two times, he dropped the beat right as packed arena was singing “A minorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.” And if you know the reference, you know the message he was trying to send to you know who. This was a victory lap unlike any seen before it.

He had the entire crowd singing it and everybody at home. There ain’t no coming back from this for Drake.

A moment of unity, including some NBA stars

There were some celebrities in attendance besides the artists performing, including Lakers star LeBron James. But when Lamar invited his L.A. family on stage at the end, Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan were among the locals to come up and vibe out to Not Like Us with Lamar.

And yes, that’s DeRozan who spent nine years as a Toronto Raptor, which had to be another shot to Drake’s ego. Look at how much fun Westbrook is having.

In the end, though, it turned into a beautiful moment, as Lamar had all these people from different backgrounds, hoods and cliques come together for a good time and a beautiful photo to cap it all off.

This was really a special moment in hip hop.

Could DeMar DeRozan really leave the Chicago Bulls to return to the San Antonio Spurs?

Just how realistic is a return to the Spurs for the Bulls vet?

Could DeMar DeRozan really leave the Chicago Bulls to return to the San Antonio Spurs in free agency this offseason? On one hand, DeRozan is indeed an unrestricted free agent with the ability to choose whichever club he wants his next deal to be with.

But on the other, he is also a veteran nearing the end of his prime years, meaning it is doubtful that he would be looking at a long and large contract with San Antonio should he elect to ink a contract with the Spurs’ front office this summer. So with all of that in mind, just how realistic is a return to the Spurs for the Bulls vet?

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel recently took a moment to get into the plausibility and probability of a DeRozan return to San Antonio.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.

San Antonio Spurs considered best free agency landing spot for DeMar DeRozan

We think the fit a great one as well.

Who doesn’t love a good reunion? That is not where the logic of a recent analysis by Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes on the best and worst landing spots for former Spurs and current Chicago Bulls veteran wing DeMar DeRozan stops, however.

We won’t spend time on the worst landing spot Hughes found for DeRozan (the Charlotte Hornets — is any time really needed?). But we do agree the fit for the USC alum makes plenty of sense with the San Antonio Spurs if a more traditional floor general does not become available. “DeRozan has averaged more than 5.0 assists in six of his last seven seasons, and he even posted a career-high 6.9 dimes per game back in 2020-21, the last of his three years with the Spurs,” writes the B/R league analyst.

“Though his facilitation wouldn’t come as a high-volume pick-and-roll orchestrator, DeRozan has shown an ability to distribute from the elbows and out of isolation sets when he draws a second defender,” adds Hughes.

“A little individual shot creation wouldn’t hurt either, considering San Antonio ranked 26th in offensive efficiency last season,” he suggests.

In our eyes, DeRozan is not a point guard substitute, but instead a veteran ball mover who can aid the growth of whatever younger talent the Spurs draft to play at the 1. Semantics aside, we think the fit a great one as well.
