Penn State basketball dominates Delaware State in season opener

Penn State men’s basketball opens the Mike Rhoades era with a dominating win.

Penn State couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season and to get the Mike Rhoades era officially underway.

Facing a Delaware State squad who struggled mightily last season, this was a game that the Nittany Lions should have dominated based on the talent on their roster.

But winning the game 79-45 in the fashion they did was a statement that this new brand of basketball is here.

With just under three minutes into the game, Penn State led 5-4, getting off to a slow start. Then, they flipped the switch and went on a 21-2 run and held a 26-6 lead 13 minutes into the game.

After that extended run, the Nittany Lions never looked back. They went into halftime with a 39-18 lead.

The transfer players that came into the program during the offseason got much of the headlines, and for good reason, but it was the returners [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] who played a major role to start.

Brown was the leading scorer at half with 11 points and Clary added seven with two rebounds and an assist. Temple transfer [autotag]Zach Hicks[/autotag] showed off his shooting prowess by hitting three three-pointers before half.

In the second half, it was much of the same for Penn State. They maintained their huge lead and the game never got under single digits.

The Nittany Lions shot 49.1% from the field, efficiently carving up the Delaware State defense. They also shot the deep ball well, hitting 12 threes on 37.5% shooting.

Havoc will be the defensive philosophy under Rhoades and they were able to force 23 total turnovers and stole the ball 11 times. They also held Delaware State to 28.8% shooting and 1-16 from three.

Clary finished the game as the leading scorer with 22 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Brown was second with 20 and Hicks finished with 12.

The VCU transfers [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Kern[/autotag] struggled in their first game with Penn State, combining to go 2-10 from the floor for nine points.

[autotag]Qudus Wahab[/autotag], the 6’11” center, grabbed 13 rebounds and showed Penn State fans what it’s like to have legitimate size on the floor.

Yes, this game was against Delaware State, but it was still a great start for the Nittany Lions under their new coach.

What to watch for in Penn State basketball’s season opener vs. Delaware State

Key storylines to look for in Penn State basketball’s season opener against Delaware State.

Mike Rhoades begins his first season with Penn State tonight as the Nittany Lions host the Delaware State Hornets to open the 2023-24 season.

It’s always exciting when the college basketball season tips off, and for Penn State, the amount of intrigue couldn’t be higher with a new coach and a revamped roster. A year ago, the Nittany Lions beat the Hornets 60-46 at the Bryce Jordan Center to extend their all-time series record to 4-0.

With Delaware State coming off a disappointing season that saw the Hornets go 6-24 overall and 4-10 in Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference play, Penn State can look to implement Rhoades style and get into a rhythm as a team with ten new players.

VCU transfer and reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Ace Baldwin Jr. figures to be the lead man for a Nittany Lions team looking for a star after the departure of Jalen Pickett to the NBA. Baldwin’s experience with Rhoades’ system and fellow VCU transfer Nick Kern Jr. should be extremely beneficial in quickly getting the team up to speed.

Baldwin’s knack on the defensive end is something to watch for tonight. The former Ram was 19th in steals per game (2.23) last season and is one of the premier on-ball defenders in the country. An aggressive and turnover-forcing defense is exactly the type Rhoades wants to run. If the 16 turnovers forced in the exhibition against Robert Morris is any indication, the unit should show off tonight.

Another thing to watch for tonight is whether North Carolina transfer Puff Johnson suits up for the opener. The 6’8 wing from Moon, Pennsylvania, did not play in the exhibition, and Rhoades lists him as “day-to-day.” Johnson, a co-captain along with Baldwin and returning guard Kanye Clary, is expected to be a key contributor whom Rhoades leans on heavily. If Johnson doesn’t play, watch out for the second North Carolina transfer De’Marco Dunn and Temple sharpshooting transfer Zach Hicks.

In a game not expected to be a close one (an 18.5-point favorite on FanDuel), expect Rhoades to rotate his squad frequently and to experiment with different matchups. The defense, the pick-and-roll game, and Ace Baldwin Jr. are my three items to watch as the season gets started tonight.

How to watch Penn State basketball’s season opener vs. Delaware State

Ace Baldwin and the new-look Nittany Lions officially begin a new college basketball season Monday night in the Bryce Jordan Center. Here is how to watch the game.

Penn State begins a new era of college basketball on Monday evening. [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] will officially coach his first game as the head coach of the Nittany Lions after guiding the men’s basketball team to a 3-0 record in offseason exhibition games. After winning two games in the Bahamas against international competition and a charity exhibition game against Robert Morris in a preseason tune-up, the games are about to count for something.

Penn State hosts Delaware State in the Bryce Jordan Center on Monday evening to get the new era started. Transfer guard [autotag]Ace Baldwin Jr.[/autotag] should have an instant impact on the floor and the return of [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] will give Penn State a fun combo to watch grow together on the court this season.

Delaware State won an exhibition game against Cabrini College, 101-58. The Hornets are coming off a rough 6-24 season last year and are hoping to get off to a better start. Penn State is 4-0 all-time against Delaware State. That includes a 60-49 victory in State College last December.

Seth Lundy records double-double in return, Penn State tops Delaware State

Seth Lundy records double-double in return as Penn State tops Delaware State

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] certainly left an impact on the court in his return to action after missing one game due to injury. Lundy recorded a double-double in Penn State’s 60-46 home win over Delaware State on Thursday afternoon. The win improved Penn State to 10-3 as the calendar year and non-conference schedule comes to a close. Penn State will play a Big Ten schedule for the remainder of the season beginning on Sunday against Iowa.

Lundy scored a game-high 15 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double, his second of the season. He was also the team’s leading scorer for the fourth time this season. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] (12 points) and [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] (10 points) each recorded double-digit point totals in the win.

Penn State’s offense wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard in its final home game of 2022, but it didn’t have to. The defense held the struggling visitors to fewer than 50 points, marking the first time that happened this season.

[autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] continues to inch closer to the 1,000-point mark. With six points against the Hornets, Dread is now nine points away from the century mark.

Penn State’s next game will help usher in 2023 with a Big Ten contest against Iowa. Penn State will host the Hawkeyes at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Big Ten play for the remainder of the season gets started on New Years day, so Penn State is hoping to close out the calendar year on a winning note before the conference race really gets going.

Penn State is a heavy favorite against the visiting Hornets, and the home court in Happy Valley has been kind to Penn State so far this season, with the exception of one game.

Here is how to catch the action on Thursday.

Penn State basketball will go 22 days in between games after having a third-striaght game canceled

Penn State was set to return to the basketball court on Wednesday night after having its last two games wiped out due to COVID protocols within the program. But the return to the court will have to wait just a little longer.

Penn State has not played a game since December 11, a loss at Michigan State. As of now, Penn State’s next scheduled game is set for Sunday, January 2, 2022 with a home game against Indiana in Big Ten play.
