Can the Oklahoma Sooners make it back-to-back wins when they go on the road to take on the Missouri Tigers?
The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Missouri Tigers for the 97th time in a history that dates back to 1902. The Sooners are 67-25-4 all-time against the Tigers, but that will have no bearing on this game.
Neither the Sooners nor the Tigers are meeting preseason expectations. Oklahoma was once a top 15 team but hasn’t been ranked in weeks. The Tigers inched inside the top 10 but are hanging onto their place in the top 25 by a thread.
Missouri is 6-2 on the season but just 2-2 in SEC play, with blowout losses to Texas A&M and Alabama. While they are two of the best teams in the conference, the Tigers’ offense struggled against two really good defenses.
Oklahoma’s offense has struggled as well, leading to a coordinator change and multiple quarterback changes throughout the season. However, after a strong first half performance against Ole Miss, an efficient performance against Maine, and the probable return of a pair of key weapons, there’s hope the Sooners are trending in a positive direction on offense. They’ve got a defense good enough to win, just need the offense to carry their weight.
Can the Oklahoma Sooners pick up their sixth win of the season and secure bowl eligibility? Let’s take a look at this week’s Sooners Wire Staff Predictions.
Sooners Wire Staff Predictions for Oklahoma at Missouri
This game comes down to the health of Missouri quarterback Brady Cook, in my opinion. If he’s good to go, the Tigers have enough offense and overall talent to put too many points on the board for Oklahoma to keep up. But if he’s can’t go, or is severely limited, Mizzou’s offense may look closer to what it did against Alabama.
I’ll go with the latter. OU will be without their top two offensive tackles again this week, but the running game does just enough against a struggling Missouri defense. The defense will have to be opportunistic and win the key moments.
If the Sooners get a solid outing from Jackson Arnold, don’t give up the big plays defensively, and win the turnover battle, they’ll get to bowl eligibility.
The Oklahoma Sooners are expected to see the return of two key players to the offense when they take on the Missouri Tigers.
The Oklahoma Sooners received good news on the Thursday injury report as they get set to take on the Missouri Tigers in Columbia this weekend. Two of their most dynamic offensive players, Jalil Farooq and Deion Burks, look on track to return to action on Saturday.
Oklahoma has been decimated by injuries this season, particularly to the wide receiver group. While the returns of Burks and Farooq won’t help the Sooners contend for an SEC title or a berth in the College Football Playoff, OU will have a chance to finish the season on a high note as they get healthier at the skill positions.
Still, there are concerns along the offensive line, with several key pieces expected to be out this week due to injuries. Oklahoma will rely on some o their young players to hold down the fort against a stout Missouri defensive front.

Ethan Downs injury update
Ethan Downs came off the injury report from Wednesday to Thursday, meaning he’s going to play in this game.
Jacob Sexton injury update
Jacob Sexton went down in the second half of the Ole Miss game, suffering multiple lower-body injuries. There’s not a timeline for his return at this point.
Michael Tarquin injury update
Michael Tarquin remained questionable on the second iteration of the availability report heading into week 11. The Sooners will miss the veteran offensive tackle if he’s unable to play this week.
Deion Burks injury update
[autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] hasn’t played since the loss to Tennessee, but looks on track to play this week against Missouri.
Jalil Farooq injury update
[autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] has missed all but the first series of the season against Temple. Like Burks, Farooq looks set to return against the Tigers.
Jovantae Barnes injury update
There’s been no status update for [autotag]Jovantae Barnes[/autotag] at this point. If he makes the trip to Columbia, he’ll have a good chance to suit up for the pivotal SEC showdown.
Gavin Sawchuk injury update
Don’t expect Gavin Sawchuk to play this week. He’s missed the last three games due to an injury.
Adepoju Adebawore injury update
There’s been no status change for Adepoju Adebawore ahead of this week’s matchup with Missouri. Look for the defensive end rotation to include Ethan Downs, R Mason Thomas, Trace Ford, and Caiden Woullard. Adebawore’s appeared in eight games this season, but has only played 104 snaps due to Oklahoma’s depth along the defensive line.
Brady Cook injury update
Brady Cook suffered an ankle injury against Auburn and then missed most of the loss to Alabama with an injured hand. There’s been no status change for Cook and there’s an expectation that he won’t be available for this week’s action.
Nate Noel injury update
Another notable injury is that of leading rusher Nate Noel. He missed the Alabama game with a foot injury and is likely to miss this week as well. In his absence, the Tigers turned to Marcus Carroll, who carried the ball 17 times for 80 yards against the Crimson Tide.
Mookie Cooper injury update
Missouri’s third-leading receiver, Mookie Cooper, was downgraded to doubtful for Saturday’s contest. Don’t expect him to play.

Jacob Sexton injury update
Jacob Sexton went down in the second half of the Ole Miss game, suffering multiple lower body injuries. There’s not a timeline for his return at this point.
Michael Tarquin injury update
Michael Tarquin missed the Sooners win over Maine due to an ankle injury, leaving Spencer Brown to get the start at right tackle. Isaiah Autry-Dent received a lot of playing time in the contest as well. The Sooners are hopeful Tarquin can return this week. He’s been Oklahoma’s most consistent offensive lineman in 2024.
Deion Burks injury update
All eyes are on Deion Burks this week as he’ll try to return for the first time since suffering a soft tissue injury in the week 4 loss to Tennessee. Brent Venables and Jackson Arnold are optimistic that he’ll be available.
Jalil Farooq injury update
Like Burks, there’s optimism that Jalil Farooq can return from injury this week after being sidelined with a broken foot in the season opener. He’s been practicing and with three games remaining has a chance to make an impact on the Sooners season.
Jovantae Barnes injury update
Jovantae Barnes is a surprise inclusion on this week’s injury report. He seemed to come out of the Maine game healthy, so he’ll be a name to monitor this week.
Gavin Sawchuk injury update
Gavin Sawchuk hasn’t had the season many expected after the way he finished 2023, but with the offensive line issues OU’s dealt with, it’s not all that surprising. Sawchuk’s missed the last couple of games for the Sooners but had been playing sparingly prior to getting dinged up.
Adepoju Adebawore injury update
Oklahoma’s former five-star defensive end Adepoju Adebawore was injured in the win over Maine, suffering a lower-body injury. He’s appeared in eight games this season, but has only played 104 snaps due to Oklahoma’s depth along the defensive line.
Ethan Downs injury update
One of Oklahoma’s leaders on defense, Ethan Downs, has been pivotal to the Sooner’s success on the defensive side of the ball. Downs dressed and warmed up with the team in the win over Maine but sat out due to back spasms.
Brady Cook injury update
Missouri quarterback Brady Cook is the name to watch this week for the Missouri Tigers. He suffered an ankle injury against Auburn and then missed most of the loss to Alabama with an injured hand. Though listed as questionable, it’s expected that Cook will miss this week and Drew Pyne will get the start.
The Tigers will likely be without Mookie Cooper, who is listed as doubtful for this week. He’s third on the team in receiving yards behind Theo Wease and Luther Burden.

What did Jackson Arnold have to say about the potential return of Deion Burks and Jalil Farooq?
Though the Oklahoma Sooners will not be playing to earn a spot in a title game or the College Football Playoff, they have an opportunity to finish the season on a high note.
Starting this week against Missouri, the Sooners play three top 25 teams: the Tigers, Alabama and LSU. And they might be getting right on offense at the right time. Things are clicking a bit better for quarterback Jackson Arnold after he was reinserted against South Carolina, and he might be getting some help this week.
Brent Venables mentioned that wide receivers Deion Burks and Jalil Farooq could return for the Sooners when they make the trip to Columbia to take on old Big 8 and Big 12 foe Missouri.
Speaking with the media on Tuesday night, Jackson Arnold was a little more emphatic, saying, “I feel like on the field, you have two explosive guys coming back that are key pieces to our offense.”
He went on to talk about the confidence it gives the Sooners offense to have the two leaders on the field. Burks and Farooq should open the field for the offense. Burks in the slot and Farooq outside give the Sooners two dynamic playmakers that can make life a lot easier for Arnold and the offense.
Farooq was injured on the first series of the season. He broke his foot and required surgery. Burks went down in the loss to Tennessee. With both possibly returning this week and with what the Sooners have shown on offense the last couple of weeks, the offense might be coming together with three games remaining.

Could the Oklahoma Sooners be close to getting a pair of key players back?
Given the calendar and all of the injuries the Sooners have suffered, it’s hard to believe OU will get anyone back until they actually step foot on the field.
But the Sooners are inching closer to getting a pair of playmakers back.
After the Sooners’ win over Maine, Brent Venables offered updates on wide receivers Jalil Farooq and Deion Burks.
“They’re good,” Venables said. “They were out running around here at the end of this last week. So we’ll see where they’re at here this week. It’s not evasive, not hiding nothing. I’m hopeful, like probably everybody else that likes the Sooners, that ‘Can we get these guys back?’ But when you break your foot, that’s usually in that best-case scenario, seven weeks right there.”
Farooq broke his foot on the first series of the season in OU’s win against Temple, nine weeks ago. He was originally slated to have a six-to-eight week recovery time, but the Sooners have been cautious with his return. Oklahoma could use him in the lineup, but we’ll have to see what his injury status is when the SEC releases its first report for Week 11 on Wednesday.
Burks suffered a soft tissue injury in the loss to Tennessee six weeks ago. Though Venables mentioned Burks was day-to-day prior to the Ole Miss game, he suffered a setback in practice and missed the loss to the Rebels.
The Sooners offense has shown signs of life with Jackson Arnold at quarterback but it has not yet put together a complete game against SEC competition. If either Burks or Farooq or both are back this week against Missouri, that would be a huge boon for the Sooners passing attack.

According to a report from George Stoia of SoonerScoop and Pete Nakos of On3, Oklahoma Sooners Deion Burks expected to miss Week 9.
The hits keep coming for the Oklahoma Sooners. Downgraded from questionable to doubtful on Thursday’s injury report, Deion Burks looks like he’ll miss his fourth straight game.
According to George Stoia of SoonerScoop and Pete Nakos of On3, Burks is expected to miss this week’s matchup vs. Ole Miss. According to Stoia, the standout wide receiver suffered a setback at Tuesday’s practice that limited him for the rest of the practice week.
As I reported on @SoonerScoop earlier this week, Burks suffered a setback during practice this week. It originally looked like he was going to make his return on Saturday. https://t.co/daRC24yq9K
So, the Sooners will turn to their young depth in the slot to provide meaningful snaps. Zion Ragins has been getting a lot of snaps, but it was Jacob Jordan who provided six receptions for 86 yards last week against South Carolina in his first offensive action of the season. Presumably, Jordan will receive a larger role in the offense after that performance.
The Sooners need someone to step up in the passing game against an Ole Miss defense that is No. 1 in the nation in rushing yards per game and yards per carry. More of the onus to find production in the offense will fall on Jackson Arnold’s shoulders.

The Oklahoma Sooners don’t look like they’ll be getting any good news on the injury front this week.
The Oklahoma Sooners have been as banged up as anyone in college football in 2024 and there doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel. However, there was some optimism that the Sooners could get one of their top five wide receivers back soon.
Well, another week and more bad news for the Sooners on the Thursday injury report.

Deion Burks injury update
[autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] is trending in the wrong direction at this point. After missing last week but going through warm-ups, Brent Venables indicated Burks was day-to-day. On Thursday evening, Burks was downgraded to doubtful for Saturday’s matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels.
Burks has been out since the Tennessee game. His absence creates an opportunity for [autotag]Jacob Jordan[/autotag] to get some more playing time after a breakout six receptions and 86 yards.

Nothing has changed on the injury report for the Ole Miss Rebels. Wide receiver Tre Harris is still listed as questionable for the Rebels. He played in Ole Miss’ last game against the Tigers, so it feels likely that he would play this week coming out of the bye.

All the latest updates and news on Oklahoma Football’s injury report ahead of a Week 9 game vs. Ole Miss.
The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing to take on the Ole Miss Rebels this Saturday, and they’ll once again be without plenty of key faces on offense.
OU will once again be without wide receivers [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag], [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag], [autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag] and [autotag]Andrel Anthony[/autotag] in this week’s game. They’ve already been ruled out along with defensive backs [autotag]Gentry Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Kendel Dolby[/autotag] and offensive lineman [autotag]Geirean Hatchett[/autotag].
While Gibson, Dolby and Hatchett are all out for the 2024 season, there is still hope that Farooq, Anderson, Anthony and Williams could return this year.

Deion Burks injury update
Deion Burks has been out of action since Oklahoma’s loss to Tennessee but Brent Venables indicated earlier this week that he was day-to-day and is questionable for this week against Ole Miss. The Sooners offense needs some experience in the passing game and Burks return would provide a boost.
Burks is still Oklahoma’s leading wide receiver in 2024 despite not playing since the Tennessee game back in September. His return would be huge for this Sooner offense as they look to rebound and find ways to put points on the board amidst the changes at offensive coordinator.
Gavin Sawchuk injury update
Gavin Sawchuk was projected to be the starter and take the leap at running back for OU in 2024, but he has struggled in a big way, losing his lead role and getting less and less carries as the season rolls along.
According to head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag], Sawchuk is dealing with a strained quad, which is why he didn’t play last week against the South Carolina Gamecocks. He could return this week, but it doesn’t look very likely.

Ole Miss wide receiver Tre Harris is a player to watch this week. He’s the Rebels leading receiver and if he’s unable to go this week will create an interesting dilemma for the Ole Miss offense.
Princely Umanmielen and Cayden Lee are key players for the Rebels that look to be on track to play this week. Lee is second on the team in receiving and Umanmielen is Ole Miss’ highest-graded defensive lineman according to Pro Football Focus.

Brent Venables indicated that injured wide receivers are interested in coming back for 2025.
The injury situation of the Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver room has been a big storyline of the 2024 season. It isn’t the reason why the Sooners have struggled offensively, but it certainly is part of it. During the Rudy’s Coach’s Show, Brent Venables provided an update on his injured wide receivers.
Shared via Colton Sulley of The Oklahoman on X, Venables indicated that a couple of guys could return at some point this season.
[autotag]Andrel Anthony[/autotag], who was lost to a knee injury in the 2023 edition of the Red River Showdown, may still play this season, but Venables gave no indication as to a possible return date.
[autotag]Nic Anderson[/autotag] suffered a hamstring injury in fall camp and attempted to come back, but Venables indicated he’s suffered a torn quadriceps muscle.
[autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag] broke his foot in the week one win over Temple, and Venables mentioned he’s still a few weeks away. Farooq still has a redshirt year available to him. Since he’s only played in one game, he could play in three more regular season games without burning the redshirt year. A few weeks away would put a return closer to the bye week. The Sooners face Alabama and LSU after the bye.
[autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] was seen warming up prior to the Sooners’ loss to South Carolina but didn’t get in the game. Venables shared that Burks is day-to-day at this point.
But perhaps the most notable comment in the injury update was more about next year than 2024. Venables shared that each of his dinged-up wide receivers has indicated they’re interested in returning for 2025. That would be huge for next season as Oklahoma would also bring back Jayden Gibson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in fall camp.
Oklahoma will still need to solidify and develop its young depth, but if Anderson, Anthony, Burks, and Farooq all return along with Gibson, that would provide the Sooners with fantastic depth for whoever the offensive coordinator and quarterback are for next year.

Deion Burks is listed as questionable for the Oklahoma Sooners week 8 matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Oklahoma Sooners have been battling injuries at wide receiver all season. [autotag]Deion Burks[/autotag] has missed the last two games for the Sooners, but is questionable heading into Oklahoma’s matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
If Oklahoma’s leading receiver can find his way onto the field, it would be a huge boost for the Sooners offense.
Running back and kick returner [autotag]Sam Franklin[/autotag] and backup tight end Kade McIntyre are also listed as questionable heading into this week’s matchup. If Franklin isn’t available to return kicks, that role could go to Billy Bowman, Peyton Bowen, Eli Bowen, or running back Taylor Tatum.
McIntyre has been limited to three games this season and played a season-high 11 snaps against Auburn, according to Pro Football Focus. With injuries at wide receiver, the Sooners have tried to work more two and three tight end sets.
On the South Carolina side, the Gamecocks appear fairly healthy. Wide receiver Jared Brown will miss this week’s action. He has eight receptions for 103 yards on the season.
Defensive lineman DeAndre Jules played against Ole Miss but missed last weekend’s game against Alabama. He’s been productive in a rotational role for a talented Gamecocks defensive line, playing as many as 25 snaps against Kentucky and 34 against LSU. He’ll miss his second straight game.
