Oklahoma’s Kennedy Brooks named Earl Campbell Award semifinalist

Oklahoma redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks was named one of the semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

Oklahoma redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks was announced as one of the semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

Brooks has rushed 145 times for 857 rushing yards thus far this season with 10 rushing touchdowns. The Mansfield, Texas, native had a monster day in the Red River Showdown against the Texas.

Versus the Longhorns, Brooks rumbled for 217 yards on 25 carries with a pair of touchdowns. That included the 33-yard game-winning touchdown with three seconds remaining.

Brooks followed that performance up the following week with a 153 rushing yards performance against TCU.

Brooks already owns a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his Oklahoma career. In 2018, Brooks carried it 119 times for 1,056 yards with 12 rushing touchdowns. Then, in 2019, Brooks recorded 1,011 rushing yards on 155 totes.

Brooks needs 143 more rushing yards to become just the fourth Sooner in program history to ever record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He would join De’Mond Parker (1996-98), Adrian Peterson (2004-06) and Samaje Perine (2014-16) as the only Oklahoma running backs with that distinction.

The award is named after 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell and it recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football. In order to be eligible to receive the award, a player must have either been born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or have played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

The fan vote for the semifinalists round is underway and fans can vote for Brooks once per day by visiting www.earlcampbellaward.com. Finalists are set to be announced on Dec. 14.

Oklahoma has been well represented for the award in recent memory. The Sooners have produced eight finalists since 2014: Samaje Perine in 2014, Dede Westbrook in 2016, Baker Mayfield each year from 2015-17, Kyler Murray in 2018 and Jalen Hurts and CeeDee Lamb in 2019.

Mayfield and Murray won the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018.

Brooks has his next chance to impress this Saturday as Oklahoma welcomes in Iowa State at 11 a.m. for a Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.

The Yin and Yang of 2016 Oklahoma-Texas Tech from the Sooner radio booth

A look back at the night Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes rewrote the NCAA record books with perspective from the OU Radio crew, Toby Rowland and Teddy Lehman.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Maybe that’s the proper way to remember exactly what happened when Oklahoma topped Texas Tech 66-59 at Jones AT&T Stadium five years ago.

That could’ve also described the respective reactions from Lubbock that night from Sooner football’s radio play-by-play voice and color analyst.

“I thought it was awesome. I thought it was one of the most exciting, unbelievable games I’ve ever seen or called. It was big play after big play after big play,” OU football play-by-play voice Toby Rowland said. “I just remember thinking the whole game and kind of trying to capture it on the broadcast that we were witnessing history and one of the most amazing offensive nights in the history of the game. What these two quarterbacks were doing, what Joe Mixon was doing was unbelievable.”

What those two quarterbacks —Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes —and those two offenses were doing was rewriting the NCAA record books.

The two teams finished with identical yardage in total offense: 854 yards each. The 1,708 combined yards of total offense shattered the previous mark set by San Jose State and Nevada in 2001 when those teams combined for 1,640 yards.

Mahomes tied the FBS record for passing yards in a game with 734 and was one passing attempt shy of tying Washington State’s Connor Halliday for the most attempts in a single game. Mahomes’ 819 yards of total offense and 100 plays either rushing or passing set records as well.

In his return to Lubbock, Mayfield was spectacular. Mayfield completed 27-of-36 passes for 545 passing yards with an OU-record seven passing touchdowns.

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon had a monster all-purpose night, carrying the football for the Sooners 31 times and racking up 263 rushing yards with a pair of scores. He also hauled in four passes–three of which went for touchdowns–for 114 receiving yards.

OU wide receiver Dede Westbrook finished with nine receptions, a pair of touchdown grabs and 202 receiving yards.

After the Sooner radio broadcast was finished, Rowland and his sons went outside the booth to take a picture of the three of them with the scoreboard in the backdrop to commemorate what was a historic offensive night.

“And then, I opened up social media and saw that it was like a complete meltdown, that Sooner Nation did not receive the game as optimistically as I did. It’s the worst read I’ve ever had on a football game that I’ve called, because, when I was in the middle of it, I thought it was–I still think it was awesome. It was an awesome offensive night,” Rowland said.

For a Butkus and Bednarik Award winner during his playing days as a star linebacker at Oklahoma, it’s understandable why then-OU radio sideline analyst and current color voice Teddy Lehman felt differently.

“I expected a high scoring game, but I didn’t expect anything like what we witnessed. It was unbelievable and it was one of those weird games that so much happened, so many big plays happened that there’s a lot of it that kind of gets lost in the mix of big plays,” Lehman said.

And it wasn’t just Oklahoma’s struggles defensively that left a bad taste in Lehman’s mouth.

“It was horrible on both sides. It was hard watching Oklahoma out there, but it was equally as frustrating, as odd as this sounds, watching Texas Tech. There were guys running wide open. There were running plays where the hole–and I’m not exaggerating–is eight yards wide and a running back doesn’t even get touched on a fifty yard run for a touchdown. No one even anywhere near him. There wasn’t anything good about any of it,” Lehman said.

The fear that night for Lehman was that this was the direction college football might be headed.

“My big frustration at that time was… is this what college football is going to turn into? At that time, it kind of was. That’s when we had all the high-flying offenses in the Big 12. I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t like this.’ This is not good football. Good football is complementary. A struggle to get a first down and to get points, moving the ball is an art and field position matters. All this is who has the ball last,” Lehman said.

Looking back, there were some incredible offensive players both ways on the field that night. Tech wide receivers Keke Coutee and Cameron Batson both still play in the NFL.

Mixon has turned into a star for the Cincinnati Bengals and Westbrook is with the Minnesota Vikings. Mayfield led the Cleveland Browns to its first playoff win in 26 years last season and Mahomes quarterbacked Kansas City to its first Super Bowl win in over 50 years.

“It was an amazing gluttony of offensive talent on display that night, but my experience has been that that doesn’t really matter. Sooner fans were sickened by what they saw and have a terrible memory of that game. They don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to think about it. I’ve talked to people who turned off the TV they were so disgusted. It’s a win that a lot of people regard as a loss I believe,” Rowland said.

Lehman points out that the painful part for Oklahoma fans is the fact that Mahomes authored that performance against the Sooners when his college career really never consistently mirrored what his professional career has become.

“There’s no doubt he’s a good player, but that game for him in college is a one-off performance. That wasn’t an every-week type of performance and it happened to come against Oklahoma. There’s nothing that he can do in the NFL that justifies that day. Nothing,” Lehman said.

As Oklahoma gets set to play host to Texas Tech this weekend, Rowland reflected on the 8-0 start thus far.

“I think it’s been a wild, unexpected ride and it’s amazing that they are undefeated considering the number of close games that they’ve played. Nobody could have forecasted the series of events that have unfolded for this team including Spencer Rattler getting benched in the middle of an undefeated season,” Rowland said.

Rowland laughs as he explains that he was just listening to a radio segment about who deserves the blame for Oklahoma’s 2021 season to date.

“And they’re undefeated, so it’s just crazy. I’m not even saying it was a segment that didn’t deserve to happen. It’s been a year in which I wish we had a Hard Knocks covering the Sooners. I wish we had behind the scenes access of what this year was like, because I think it would be highly entertaining,” Rowland said.

“Whether it’s Texas Tech this week or Kansas last week or Baylor in two weeks or even the bye week, the only thing that you can count on is that something dramatic and unexpected is going to happen every week with this team. Sometimes it’s on the field, sometimes it’s off the field, but it’s just been a crazy soap opera of a year.”

Catch both across the REF Sports Radio Network

Rowland hosts a weekday morning radio show across Oklahoma on 94.7 FM/1400 AM called the “T-Row in the Morning Show” from 6-9 a.m. alongside longtime co-host and program director T.J. Perry.

Sooner fans can tune into Lehman alongside co-host Tyler McComas on those same airwaves on weekdays from 2-6 p.m. on “The Rush.”

Vikings reveal No. 1 kick returner and No. 1 punt returner

The Vikings have revealed some special teams news.

The Vikings’ decision to sign Dede Westbrook this offseason made sense. Not only can Westbrook potentially be a wide receiver three, but he has also served as a good punt returner in the past.

If you read the headline, you probably know where I’m going with this. Mike Zimmer revealed on Friday that Dede Westbrook will be the team’s No. 1 punt returner.

Will Ragatz of Sports Illustrated reported that Ihmir Smith-Marsette will return kicks. Smith-Marsette earning a spot in the return game seemed likely after he performed well in the preseason and was listed as the No. 1 kick returner on the unofficial depth chart recently.

With Jordan Berry at punter, Greg Joseph at kicker and Andrew DePaola at long snapper, the Vikings have solidified their main special teams positions for now. Last year, the Vikings struggled in pretty much every aspect of special teams, which led to personnel turnover for this season. Let’s see if anything changes throughout 2021.

Fantasy football: Three sleepers on the Vikings

Here are some fantasy football sleepers on the Vikings:

The Vikings have some players this year who are flying under the radar among other fanbases. That can benefit fantasy football players when their drafts come around.

This is a list of sleepers on Minnesota. Many of these players are probably for leagues with a lot of different teams in them, but maybe they can provide value in other contexts.

Here is the list:

Oklahoma Sooners’ top 12 moments in football from the Big 12 era

With migration to the SEC on the horizon, take a stroll down memory lane with the top 12 moments from the Oklahoma Sooners time in the Big 12.

One of the best things about sports, and college football, in particular, are the memories it creates for the fan that last a lifetime. In the Oklahoma Sooner’s dominance of the Big 12 since its inception, they’ve created quite a few memories.

With migration to the Southeastern Conference on the horizon, the Sooners’ reign at the top of the Big 12 will be concluding. Collecting 14 Big 12 Championships, the Oklahoma Sooners have created quite a few memorable moments along the way.

And as their future is headed to the SEC, let’s take a look back at the top 12 moments from the Oklahoma Sooners time in the Big 12 Conference.

Vikings’ 2021 salary cap space amid NFL training camp

The Vikings still have some room to work with for 2021.

Among Vikings fans, there has been a lot of talk surrounding Kirk Cousins’ contract situation.

Despite all the different takes about it, many people agree that — given the circumstances — the team has done a good job of maneuvering the cap this year.

Minnesota made another savvy move recently, signing Dede Westbrook. Westbrook’s cap hit won’t be too hard on the Vikings, considering he signed a one-year deal worth $1,127,500, per KSTP’s Darren Wolfson.

PFF’s Brad Spielberger tweeted that Westbrook’s deal will presumably be the veteran minimum if that is the total money. That would make a cap hit of about $987,500, per Spielberger.

That doesn’t affect the salary cap too much. According to Over the Cap, the Vikings still have roughly 12.3 million in salary cap space when Westbrook’s contract hits the books.

So Minnesota has some more room to maneuver throughout free agency if the team really wants to. Maybe a veteran guard or defensive end will pique the interest of the Vikings.

Vikings sign former Jaguars receiver Dede Westbrook

Westbrook worked out for the Vikings on Saturday, and it seems they saw enough to bring him on.

After a long offseason of waiting, former Jacksonville receiver Dede Westbrook has finally found a new home. The fifth-year player is signing with the Minnesota Vikings, his agency announced on Twitter Sunday.

The terms of the deal aren’t yet known, but according to Josina Anderson, it’s a one-year deal.

A former Biletnikoff Award winner for the best receiver in college football, Westbrook was taken in the fourth round by the Jaguars back in 2017. A bit undersized for an NFL receiver, Westbrook dealt with injuries as a rookie but appeared in all 16 games during his second season, making nine starts. That was the most productive year of his career, as he finished with 63 catches for 707 yards and five touchdowns.

Westbrook’s production dipped after that, though, and he entered the 2020 season as the No. 4 receiver on the depth chart. He appeared in just two games, making one catch for four yards, before he was placed on the injured reserve in Week 7 after suffering a torn ACL.

With his rookie deal expiring, Jacksonville chose to let him walk, and he went unsigned during the initial free agency period back in March. The Vikings worked Westbrook out on Saturday, one of several teams to show interest in him. It seems Minnesota saw enough to bring in the fifth-year player who is still on the road to recovery from knee surgery.

He joins a talented receiver group that includes Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, but he’ll hope for some success with more consistency at quarterback than he had with the Jags.

Report: Dede Westbrook officially signs with the Vikings

Dede Westbrook has officially signed with the Vikings, according to Young Money APAA Sports, which represents the wide receiver.

Dede Westbrook has officially signed with the Vikings, according to Young Money APAA Sports, which represents Westbrook among other professional athletes. The company made the announcement on Twitter on Sunday.

This news should not come as a huge surprise to Vikings fans. Minnesota was expected to sign Westbrook today, according to Josina Anderson.

Per Anderson, Westbrook is expected to sign a one-year deal. The details of the deal have not been officially released at this time.

Presumably, Westbrook fills an important role for Minnesota. The Vikings desperately needed a third wide receiver to ease the pressure off Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. Prior to Westbrook signing, there was a big drop off on the wideout depth chart after Jefferson and Thielen.

Westbrook can thrive as a third option. He’s a very capable slot receiver. He also returned punts when he was in Jacksonville. Minnesota can use players like Chad Beebe and Bisi Johnson as depth options at wide receiver now. Going with Johnson and Beebe as the third wideout options was risky. The Westbrook signing makes an injury to Thielen or Jefferson less dire.

The Vikings and Dede Westbrook: Four things to consider

Free agent WR Dede Westbrook is expected to sign with the Vikings. Here are four things to consider:

The Vikings have had a hole at the wide receiver three position for quite some time.

This week, the team has made an effort to fill the void. Minnesota had a tryout with free agent wide receiver Dede Westbrook. The team is going to sign him today, according to a report.

It’s not official yet, but all signs are pointing to Westbrook landing in Minnesota — at least for this season.

If that does happen, here are four things to consider when it comes to the free agent wide receiver:

Report: WR Dede Westbrook to sign with the Vikings sunday

Vikings fans, it’s happening: Dede Westbrook is reportedly going to sign on Sunday.

A common theme this offseason: the Vikings wide receiver three situation, or lack thereof.

According to Josina Anderson, all that is about to change. Minnesota is signing Dede Westbrook on Sunday. Westbrook is signing a one-year deal, per Anderson.

Westbrook reportedly had interest from other teams like the Seahawks. That makes sense. He is an explosive wide receiver who, when healthy, has shown he has big-play potential.

He is coming off an injury-marred 2020 where he played in just two games. However, he had 660 receiving yards in 2019. He also has the ability to return punts, an area where the Vikings struggled in 2020.

Operating under the assumption that Westbrook signs, the Minnesota wide receiver corps just got a lot better. The Vikings had a big drop off on the depth chart after Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. Westbrook changes that. He is a bit inconsistent, but that’s not a glaring issue for a wide receiver three — sometimes you need one, sometimes you don’t.

When the Vikings need one in 2021, they’ll have an easy time calling on Westbrook, assuming he signs on Sunday.
