Patriots captain calls Jerod Mayo one of the best leaders he’s seen

Deatrich Wise Jr. believes Jerod Mayo’s vision will work in the future

New England Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. is backing coach Jerod Mayo despite the Patriots’ continued struggles on the season.

“What he’s doing, I think it will work out in the future,” Wise told reporters, via Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

Mayo is only in his first year as a head coach, and there’s hope he can improve in Year 2. Wise drew comparisons with Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, who went 3-13 in his first season with the team.

He noted that Mayo’s leadership was one of the best he’s been around, which is saying a lot from a team captain and Super Bowl champion.

Wise has been a bright spot in the organization’s struggling defensive unit. He currently has 26 total tackles, five sacks and three pass deflections on the year. The Arkansas product has already eclipsed his sack total from last year.

It’s hard to imagine the Patriots parting ways with Mayo after only one year. One thing is certain: Major changes are looming after another losing season.

Two Patriots players got hefty fines for unnecessary roughness plays

Deatrich Wise Jr. and Antonio Gibson will have lighter wallets.

New England Patriots defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. and running back Antonio Gibson were both fined for plays in the team’s Week 15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Per NFL.com, Wise was fined $16,883 for an unnecessary roughness penalty stemming from a horse-collar tackle on Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. Gibson was fined $14,805 for unnecessary roughness as well. The fine on the veteran running back was due to the use of his helmet on a block.

Wise has been a key part of the Patriots defense this season with 23 combined tackles and five sacks.

Gibson has provided complementary contributions to the running back room, recording 86 carries for 406 yards and a touchdown. He has helped take some of the pressure off starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

Overall, Wise and Gibson have been positive producers for the team this season. They’ll be a bit lighter in the wallet after the recent fines, but they’ll quickly turn the page to Saturday’s home game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Patriots vs. Rams inactives: Deatrich Wise Jr. OUT, Kyle Dugger IN

Who’s in and who’s out for the Patriots in Week 11?

Kyle Dugger will be returning to the defensive backfield for the New England Patriots’ Week 11 showdown with the Los Angeles Rams.

The veteran safety has missed the last two weeks due to an ankle injury, but he returned to practice this week and went through Sunday’s pregame warmups without any setbacks.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, it isn’t all good news.

Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr., who generated two sacks and one pass deflection in last week’s win over the Chicago Bears, has officially been ruled out with a foot injury. Wise being out is a huge blow to a Patriots defensive line that just got Christian Barmore back this week.

Here are the full list of inactives for the Patriots and Rams in Week 11:

The Patriots will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. Even though the offense has improved with Drake Maye at quarterback, the outcome of this game could ultimately come down to the defense for New England.

It’ll be a defense that will have to find success without one of their best pass-rushers on the field.
