Patriots reveal 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee

The Patriots name Deatrich Wise Jr. as their 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee

New England Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. was named the 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee by the Patriots organization.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year award goes to the player who has performed at a high level both on and off the field. On the field, Wise has been a key component of the Patriots defense this season, recording 22 tackles and five sacks on the year.

Off the field, he runs the Wise Up Foundation. The foundation provides educational resources and opportunities to athletes, helps bring together the community and supports underserved athletes.

Wise has been a staple for the Patriots both on the field and in the community since he was drafted.

He held his sixth annual “Wise Big Man Camp” at Hebron High School over the summer. It’s a free camp for offensive and defensive linemen aged 14-18.

Jonathan Jones was the Patriots’ nominee for the award last season. Wise is another deserving candidate and a surefire man of the year, win or lose.

Patriots name six team captains for 2024 season

The 2024 team captains are set

The 2024 team captains are set for the New England Patriots.

On Monday, the team revealed that David Andrews, Jabrill Peppers, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Cardona and Deatrich Wise Jr. are the new captains.

Andrews, Bentley and Wise are returning captains from the 2023 season. That group of players also included Mac Jones, Hunter Henry and Matthew Slater.

Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Slater rode off into the sunset in retirement. That helped set the stage for the new captains under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.

The Patriots are undergoing significant change in their first year without coach Bill Belichick. There have been major personnel and coaching staff changes ahead of a season filled with uncertainty. It’s a rebuilding year that is sure to come with disappointment and frustrations along the way.

But the team has made solid moves in the offseason to set themselves up nicely for the future. It all begins in Sunday’s road clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Patriots only had 10 men on defense, and this happened vs Panthers

You have to see this play to believe it

Who needs 11 men on defense when your 10-men team has a playmaker like Deatrich Wise Jr.?

The New England Patriots found themselves in a precarious situation on defense in the opening drive of Thursday’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. It was on 3rd-and-7 for a potential drive-killing play in the first minute of the game.

And the Patriots only had 10 men on the field.

It’s unknown if they knew about the mistake because they didn’t call a timeout. They ended up playing it out, and Wise came flying off the edge for the sack on quarterback Jack Plummer.

This was obviously a major mistake by the Patriots, and they’re fortunate the Panthers weren’t able to exploit it. But then again, when you have one of the best defensive units in the league, you can get away with things other teams can’t.

Patriots DE Deatrich Wise Jr. hosting free linemen camp in Texas

Deatrich Wise Jr. is hosting a free camp for aspiring offensive and defensive linemen

New England Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. will be holding his sixth annual “Wise Big Man Camp” at Brian Brazil Stadium in Hebron High school in Carrolton on June 29.

The camp will be free and will feature Patriots offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, Washington Commanders defensive end Dorance Armstrong and former NFL defensive end Shaun Smith.

It will be a one-day, non-contact camp designed for athletes aged 14-18.

This camp is open to both offensive and defensive linemen, per the camp’s press release. Having been to several camps growing up, it’s clear that Wise has a great understanding of the importance of what something like this means to the community.

“When I was in high school, I was like, ‘Man, they have all these wide receiver and DB camps and camps for skill guys, but nothing for the linemen’,” said Wise, Jr. “Even if I did find a camp, it was too far away or too expensive.”

“When I made it to the league, I knew I wanted to put on a camp. I didn’t want it to be like a big-man challenge. I wanted to do actual drills and teach them skills that they could actually benefit from and improve their timing.”

This has been a busy of couple months for Wise, who was inducted into the Hebron High School Hall of Fame in February. Now, he’s giving back and paving the way for the next generation after him.

Patriots captain Deatrich Wise Jr. buys ownership stake in pro football team

Deatrich Wise Jr. is now an owner of a professional indoor football team

Deatrich Wise Jr. is officially the owner of a professional indoor football team.

The New England Patriots defensive end has bought a stake in the Beaumont Renegades, an expansion franchise being added to American Indoor Football (AIF).

Wise is joining in with a group of part-owners that also includes former longtime Arena Football League player Derron Griffin and former sports agent Sam Gordon.

“While football wasn’t invented in Texas, for more than a century, it has been part of the state’s cultural DNA. And Beaumont particularly is widely known as the pro football capital of the world,” Wise said in a press release. “I’m excited to join such an incredible group of owners and become a part of the Renegades story. Together, we’re going to bring something very special to the community, while helping our players’ dreams of playing professional football come true.”

Wise’s philanthropic efforts to uplift communities have been noted in his work with “Wise Up,” which is a foundation that works with United States veterans and student-athletes.

His work is much deeper than football.

With that said, he’ll definitely be looking to put a great product on the field as well. Indoor football is near and dear to his heart with his father, Deatrich Sr., being a former Arena Football League player.

“I can’t wait,” said Wise. “I grew up watching a lot of indoor football as a child. Players slamming up against and falling over the wall, making big hits and great catches, diving into the crowd to celebrate with the fans. Those moments helped grow my love for the game.”

That love for the game turned Wise into a fourth-round draft pick, defensive captain, Super Bowl LIII champion and now, owner of a professional football franchise.

Deatrich Wise Jr. opens up on pending contract status entering 2024

Deatrich Wise Jr. is taking a measured approach as he enters the final year of his contract

New England Patriots defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. may be entering a contract year, but that doesn’t mean he will take it easy. Wise opened up about the situation in an interview with Patriots Wire’s Jordy McElroy.

Wise has been with the Patriots since 2017, when the team selected him in the fourth round of the NFL draft. He has put together an accomplished career that has seen him record 285 tackles and 29 sacks, in addition to five forced fumbles.

The Arkansas product signed an extension with the Patriots back in March 2021. After the 2024 season, he might be entering uncharted territory as a potential free agent. With that being said, he is remaining focused on the things he can control on the field.

“I approach this like any other year. Go out there, give it your all, give it your best, lead the team to the best I know how, and that’s vocally and physically,” said Wise. “What I do on the field and what I do on the practice field, locker room and meeting room— and I just take everything one day at a time. I can’t really control things I can’t control. I control my effort and my output. And I control what I say and what I do.”

The defensive lineman has been a mainstay on New England’s unit for quite some time now. His consistent production has helped anchor the unit, which has been one of the few positives for New England over the last couple of seasons.

We’ll see if that remains the case in 2024 and beyond.

Deatrich Wise Jr. weighs in on Tom Brady-Patrick Mahomes debate

Deatrich Wise Jr. offered his two cents on the Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes comparisons

The Patrick Mahomes-Tom Brady debate has raged on, following the Kansas City Chiefs winning their third Super Bowl in five years. New England Patriots defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. weighed in on the debate in an interview with Patriots Wire’s Jordy McElroy.

Wise is coming off a 2023 season that saw him record 54 tackles and 4.5 sacks. It was his second year in a row with at least 50 tackles in a season. He also knows a thing or two about Brady. The Patriots captain was teammates with Brady from 2017-2019, and the two won Super Bowl LIII together during the 2018 season.

Wise gave a measured answer on the Brady-Mahomes debate as the latter continues to set records.

“I think [Mahomes] is definitely on track to be up there with the GOATs when he retires,” said Wise. “I think he’s doing some great things so far early in his career. Honestly, they compare him to Tom Brady a lot because of the amount of success that they both have achieved. And the numbers are very similar. So just if he continues to do what he’s doing, he’ll be talked about amongst with the greats.”

Wise’s assessment is fair, given that Mahomes is only 28 years old. The Chiefs have won the last seven AFC West division titles and the last two conference championships.

Kansas City will be looking for a three-peat when the 2024 season begins.

Patriots captain Deatrich Wise Jr. talks Bill Belichick, current state of team and No. 3 draft pick

Patriots captain Deatrich Wise Jr. chatted with Patriots Wire editor Jordy McElroy about the current state of the team, Bill Belichick and the No. 3 draft pick

Deatrich Wise Jr. is a uniquely positioned player with a foot in two alternate realities for the New England Patriots.

On one end, he witnessed the final chapters of the Patriots’ dynasty as a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He contributed in helping the team knock off the Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl LIII for the franchise’s sixth Lombardi Trophy.

But then there’s the other present reality that has the Patriots sitting near the bottom of the league with a 4-13 regular season record and last place in the AFC East. This is the reality where both Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick aren’t just gone.

Both are out of the league entirely.

Wise stands at the epicenter of what the Patriots once were and what they’ve now become. So who better to ask about why things are the way they are right now? What went wrong for the Patriots in 2023?

Most would be quick to put the onus on the offense for the team’s struggles, but Wise refused to point fingers at any one individual or unit for the worst season in Belichick’s 24 years as the Patriots’ coach.

“There were so many issues. You can’t just pinpoint one,” Wise told Patriots Wire. “I think one of the issues was our inability to play football. As coach always says it, play three phases of football. So sometimes our offense would be doing good and our defense won’t be doing good.

“Or our special teams is balling, but then offense and defense isn’t doing good. We didn’t have a game where offense, defense and special teams was playing their best game ever. It was always one, this, that and the other. So as coach always says, we need to be able to play four quarters and have all three phases playing at a high level all of the time. …Our three phases weren’t playing at a high level, like we know we can.”

The stats tell a completely different story when it comes to the Patriots defense. Despite dealing with numerous injuries throughout the season, they still finished sixth in total yards allowed with opponents averaging only 301.6 yards per game against them. They also had the fifth-best red zone scoring defense in the league.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the offense, which was tied with the Carolina Panthers for dead last in scoring and ranked as the third-worst in total yards.

“To blame one person, it will not really paint the entire picture of the season,” said Wise. “Like coach always says, coaches lose games, players win games. I never really agreed with that. I just think we win together and we lose together.

“A lot of coaches and players will take the blame for a lot of things, and it shows good leadership. But at the end, when you cut on the film, it’s a team effort. We’re all playing this game. We all prepare for this game, and we all need to prepare and play the game together and at a high level.”

Not only did the Patriots lose in the 2023 season, but they also lost their head coach. After the season was over, owner Robert Kraft and legendary coach Bill Belichick agreed to part ways, bringing an end to one of the greatest eras of football.

From an outside perspective, Belichick has always been a stern, no-nonsense coach that approaches every aspect of football with a bootcamp mentality. However, according to Wise, the 71-year-old coach has a softer and more humorous side as well.

That’s the side Wise admits he’ll miss most.

“Coach always had a lot of dry humor. He always told jokes in the meeting room. I know it’s hard to believe that he’d be laughing or telling a joke, but he would have little jokes in the offseason,” Wise said, when asked to share his best Belichick memory. “And sometimes, his jokes were hilarious. I’ll definitely miss his dry humor in the meeting room. Sometimes, he’d get on guys and pull their leg a bit, and it was pretty funny to see.

“…I don’t know [if he returns to coaching]. Maybe he’ll do what I’ve seen other coaches do in the past: Take a year off, come back and have a great season somewhere else. Maybe he goes into TV. …Maybe he becomes the “Bar Rescue” of all coaches and goes around, program to program, and fixes teams. But we don’t know what he’ll do. Maybe he’ll just sit back and go on a golf course somewhere with Nick Saban, out there chilling—him and Pete Carroll, talking about the good, old days.”

An end of an era for Belichick in New England opened the door to a new era featuring newly-hired head coach Jerod Mayo. The former All-Pro linebacker came up under Belichick as both a player and coach, and now, he’ll be taking the reins as the leading man on the sidelines.

Wise is looking forward to playing under Mayo and first-time defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington in 2024.

“Honestly, I think those are two great leaders of our team in the past,” said Wise. “They know how to boost morale. They know how to lead guys. They know how to use experience because they have experience to help the team call plays and things like that. They’re all high-level thinkers. They see big pictures, and they do a good job demonstrating what they see to other players on the team.”

Along with the new coaches, Wise is also looking forward to seeing the growth from the Patriots’ rookies in their second season. Don’t let the bad record fool you into thinking the 2023 NFL draft was an absolute bust for New England.

They came away with some future game-changers with cornerback Christian Gonzalez, receiver Demario Douglas, linebacker/safety Marte Mapu, offensive lineman Sidy Sow and defensive end Keion White.

“The whole rookie class, not to pump gas or anything, they’re very impressive, from “Pop” Douglas to Tay (Mapu). Tay is hard hitting, very versatile player,” said Wise. “The two silent assassins was Keion White and Christian Gonzalez. They don’t say much at all, but they go out there and play big. Christian is smooth out there on that edge, and Keion is just strong and explosive, super athletic, going in there and making plays.

“And then the offensive line, they’re doing a good job too with Sidy Sow. He’s bringing the pain to some of these guys locking them up. So it’s been really good to see these new guys on our team and what they can do. I’m looking forward to seeing them all thrive next year.”

The entire Patriots team could be in a position to thrive in 2024 and beyond. They’ll be entering free agency with roughly over $66 million in cap space, which is currently the third-most in the NFL. The team will also own the No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft.

A few great decisions could get the Patriots back on track to winning football games again. But the wrong decisions could set the franchise back even further than it already is currently.

Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne recently suggested the team not trade their first-round draft pick. He’d much rather see them stand pat and take one of the top players on the board. In his eyes, that player would be LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, if available.

Wise doesn’t have a favorite player at No. 3, but he agreed with Bourne about a potential trade down scenario.

“I don’t have a favorite player on the board,” said Wise. “We know, between Tom Brady and [Brock] Purdy, it doesn’t matter where you get picked at as long as you ball out. So whoever they pick, they’ve got to come in and play. But you asked me a question, I think they should keep the third pick and make something happen.”

The Patriots made something happen for nearly 20 years, after drafting Brady with the 199th pick in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft. History isn’t likely to repeat itself in that regard. Lightning rarely ever strikes twice.

But the right draft pick could get the Patriots closer to the storm.

Patriots’ top 10 defensive players in Week 16, per PFF grades

Here are the 10 highest-graded Patriots defensive players in the win over the Broncos, per PFF.

Despite having key players out of the lineup, the New England Patriots were suffocating defensively against the Denver Broncos.

There was nowhere to run or breathe for Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, who was constantly hit and harassed by the Patriots’ powerful and underrated defensive front.

Defensive tackle Christian Barmore led the charge with three sacks and four quarterback hits. He dominated up front and made it incredibly difficult for Wilson to settle in the pocket. It’s no surprise that the four highest-graded defensive players by Pro Football Focus were on New England’s defensive front.

The unit has overperformed all season, even in the absence of leading pass-rusher Matthew Judon. Defense remains the calling card for the Patriots, and in many ways, that continued to prove to be the case on Sunday night against the Broncos.

Here are the 10 highest-graded defensive players for the Patriots in Week 16, per PFF.

Patriots’ top 10 defensive players in Week 4, per PFF grades

Ranking the Patriots’ defensive players with the top-10 PFF grades in Week 4

The New England Patriots defense was put in an impossible position in the Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Not only was the unit battered with injuries, but it was handcuffed to an offense that turned the ball over three times and consistently put them in bad field position.

It was in no way a great performance for the defense, but they also didn’t look nearly as bad as the 38-3 score indicates. In fact, it’s surprising the score didn’t get even worse with the offense giving up two defensive touchdowns to the Cowboys.

The defense also lost two of their best players with cornerback Christian Gonzalez and linebacker Matthew Judon both going down with injuries. They’ll have their work cut out for them when attempting to bounce back in Week 5 against the visiting New Orleans Saints.

Let’s take a look at the top-10 defensive players, per Pro Football Focus grades, in the loss to Dallas.
