Erik Bakich switched schools just as the shifting landscape within college athletics began heating up.

Clemson hired Bakich away from Michigan as its head baseball coach last month. A couple of weeks prior to his introductory press conference, Dear Old Clemson, another collective aimed at financially supporting Tiger student-athletes’ name, image and likeness opportunities, was launched. Two weeks later, the latest dominos in the conference realignment game fell when Southern Cal and UCLA bolted for the Big Ten beginning in 2024.

Bakich may have been even busier than usual over the last month, but having been a coach at the Division I level for the last two decades, he’s far from oblivious to what’s going on around him. During a wide-ranging interview with The Clemson Insider this week, Bakich said having NIL opportunities for athletes at Clemson is “much-needed,” particularly in baseball where most if not all players are attending school on partial scholarships due to the sport’s 11.7-scholarship limit.

“I’m a huge fan of NIL because I’m a firm believer that college baseball is the most underfunded sport of all the major sports,” Bakich said. “11.7 scholarships for 35 or 40 players means you have a lot of kids walking out of school accumulating a lot of student-loan debt. If I could waive the magic wand of NIL, it would be that every player on the roster didn’t have a bill or didn’t have any debt and had their full cost of attendance covered. For me personally, that’s what I would love to see. I would love to see NIL subsidize our 11.7 so every player had as few out-of-pocket costs as possible.

“And then NIL is a great opportunity for guys that want to capitalize on their name, image and likeness to create some financial freedom for themselves. I think that’s fantastic.”

With multiple collectives in place at Clemson in addition to construction being underway on an on-campus facility dedicated solely to the development of NIL activity, Bakich said he feels like there’s enough in place to attract prospective baseball athletes and to help bridge that gap between the amount of their scholarship and the full cost of attendance once they’re enrolled.

“The TimerImpact program and Dear Old Clemson,” Bakich said. “The guys that are taking the lead on this and some (of the) initiatives, I think it’s all fantastic. It’s much-needed, it’s very helpful, and it’s critical for Clemson to continue to be a leader in this space.”

As for conference realignment, Bakich said he doesn’t have a preference on a landing spot for Clemson should the school leave the ACC in the future. But there are two leagues that he holds in high regard when it comes to the sport with which he’s involved.

“I think everyone is reacting to the news cycle and no one knows what’s going to happen and where people go,” Bakich said. “Personally, we’ll play anyone you put in front of us, and we’re going to prepare to win a national championship regardless of whether we’re in the ACC or the SEC or anywhere.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, and I try not to spend too much time thinking about it just because I have no control over any of it. But I know ACC baseball and SEC baseball, just having spent a long time in both of those conferences, those are the top two college baseball conferences by a landslide.”

Dear Old Clemson’s first event is July 24. Now there is a new way to support Clemson student-athletes. Come out and meet the freshmen football players at this meet and greet autograph session. If you sign up for certain club levels you get free access to all Dear Old Clemson events. Purchase your tickets today at Dear Old Clemson.

Newest Clemson collective signs first two NIL deals

Clemson continues to make progress in the NIL game, with a new collective signing its first two deals since officially launching one week ago.

The Clemson community seems to be progressively adapting to the new ways of college athletics day by day.

According to its Twitter account, Dear Old Clemson has signed its first two NIL deals with Clemson softball pitcher Mille Thompson and shortstop Alia Logoleo. The pair helped lead the Tigers to their first super regionals appearance in program history this year before they ultimately fell to Oklahoma State in two games.

Founded by two Clemson alumni, Dear Old Clemson serves as a collective aiming to do NIL “the Clemson way” while benefitting student-athletes. According to its initial press release on June 2, “The collective compensates Clemson student-athletes for attending events, promoting businesses, signing collectibles, sales of collectibles and interacting with members in person and virtually.”

Both Logoleo and Thompson had impressive postseason performances for the Tigers, with Logoleo batting 6-for-10 in the ACC Championship while Thompson pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the Clemson Regional. With the initial success of Clemson’s softball program, which has only had two full seasons, the athletes seem to be now benefiting financially off of the field.

Dear Old Clemson launches NIL collective

Clemson, South Carolina – June 2, 2022 – Two Clemson graduates and area business owners have launched Dear Old Clemson, a name, image and likeness collective to bring Tiger fans, businesses and student-athletes together to make sure they all win together.

Robert MacRae, a 1987 Clemson graduate, and Jason Beaty, who graduated from Clemson with a bachelor’s degree in 1997 and an MBA in 2002, founded Dear Old Clemson, LLC. Jay Courie, a lawyer and longtime Clemson supporter, serves as the legal counsel and advisor for Dear Old Clemson.

“Our mission is to do NIL the ‘Clemson way’,” MacRae said. “Dear Old Clemson was created to benefit the student-athletes, the Clemson business community, and the best fans in the nation.”

For businesses and fans that just want to contribute to football, they can hop on the Roy Bus and have their contributions dedicated to football. Two club options will be available: the Clemson Athletic Club and the Lady Tiger Club. Contributions from subscriptions to the Lady Tiger Club will go exclusively to support the athletes of Clemson’s women’s sports. The Clemson Athletic Club will support football and other sports with a majority of the funds going to football.

Club members will have access to exclusive events with student-athletes, receive early access and discounts on collectibles and other exciting benefits. Dear Old Clemson has a road map of new benefits planned for club members in order to continue to add value to the memberships.

“Dear Old Clemson’s initial focus will be on football, baseball, softball and basketball but will extend to other sports in the future,” said MacRae, CEO of MacRae Consulting Corporation and owner of The Clemson Insider Media Group. “We believe we can be a game changer for the partial scholarship sports of baseball and softball.”

One of the goals of Dear Old Clemson is to help the Clemson business community. Some of the funds raised will be used to compensate student-athletes in exchange for appearances at Clemson area businesses. Dear Old Clemson will match portions of funds from local businesses that pay student-athletes to help promote their businesses.

“When the Tigers are successful on the field, it certainly helps the local business community. We plan to do our part to help,” said Beaty, owner of Clemson Variety & Frame in downtown Clemson.

A number of former Clemson athletes have already agreed to serve as advisors to Dear Old Clemson. These former Tigers will help determine the best way to raise and distribute funds for the sports they starred in at Clemson. Kyle Parker, Shaq Lawson, Adam Humphries and Sam Russ have all agreed to help in this capacity and several others will be announced in the near future.

“The Clemson community has always raised to the occasion to help the Tigers compete at the highest level,” MacRae said. “It will take a grassroots effort for the Tigers to compete in NIL. Dear Old Clemson will provide a platform to allow all fans to do their part and enjoy an experience that is sustainable and repeatable.”
