Montrezl Harrell, other additions react to joining Sixers in the offseason

Montrezl Harrell and the other new additions react to joining the Philadelphia 76ers in the offseason.

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers knew what they had to address in the offseason as their additions were all focused on toughness and adding two-way players to the roster. There have been too many times when the Sixers came up short in both of those departments.

President Daryl Morey and the front office went out and fixed those issues with the additions of guys such as PJ Tucker, De’Anthony Melton, Danuel House Jr., and Montrezl Harrell. Those new players are expected to be a big help to this team on the floor and be able to give Philadelphia a big boost in the playoffs on their way to chasing a title.

At the team’s media day on Monday at their practice facility in Camden, NJ, Harrell, and the other new additions reacted to joining the Sixers as they prepare for the new season.

Daryl Morey, Sixers explain their offseason additions of PJ Tucker, others

Daryl Morey and the Philadelphia 76ers explain what they like about their offseason additions after a busy summer.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers had a very busy offseason, adding players who they believe will help them in their quest for a title.

After falling in the second round of the 2022 playoffs, the Sixers quickly identified multiple needs. They needed toughness. They needed shooting, and they needed players who can carry their weight at both ends of the floor in order to complement their star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden.

So, the Sixers went out and brought in PJ Tucker, De’Anthony Melton and Danuel House Jr., who they believe will be able to help the team move forward.

“One thing coach identified that made things challenging in the playoffs, especially, was the lack of players who can play both sides of the ball which become more important in the playoffs,” said president Daryl Morey at media day on Monday. “That was a priority for Elton (Brand) and myself.”

Coach Doc Rivers, who is entering his third season with the Sixers, echoed Morey as he explained what he likes about the team’s offseason additions.

“I think they all will fit in well,” said Rivers. “Each one of them fulfills a need in a lot of ways. Shooting, PJ’s leadership, his toughness. De’Anthony Melton’s playing dual positions, great defensive player, great hands, toughness. I thought we had a targeted summer and we hit pretty much what we were looking for.”

Of course, the Sixers have to consider what to do with Tucker’s minutes. He will be in the starting lineup, but how many minutes will he play before the playoffs? He is 37 years old, after all.

“My eyes will be the judge of it,” Rivers added. “He’s important to us not only on the floor, but off the floor. I think his leadership is definitely needed so not concerned with it. PJ will tell you every second he’s not concerned with it so we’ll do the right thing.”

Sixers 3 goals: De’Anthony Melton must stabilize, lead the bench unit

De’Anthony Melton must stabilize and lead the bench unit for the Philadelphia 76ers as they move forward.

In this continuing series, Sixers Wire looks at the 20 players, per Sportrac, that comprise the Philadelphia 76ers roster — 18 under contract and the two players on two-way deals — and gives each three goals for the 2022-23 season.

The new season begins on Oct. 18, and training camp begins on Sept. 27. Now is the time to begin previewing the new season of adventure that is Sixers basketball. Philadelphia will have to trim a few players because the active roster limit is 15.

This edition focuses on De’Anthony Melton who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies in a draft night trade back in June. Melton will be looking to bring his 3-and-D capabilities to Philadelphia and help move the team forward as they continue to chase down a championship.

For Melton, his three goals are as follows:

Daryl Morey discusses James Harden injury, new Sixers additions

Daryl Morey discusses the hamstring injury to James Harden as well as the new additions for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be one of the more talented teams in the Eastern Conference heading into the 2022-23 season. They have one of the top star duos in the league in Joel Embiid and James Harden and they had a busy offseason as they added to the depth around the star duo.

The Sixers will now head into the upcoming season with raised expectations. Philadelphia brought in PJ Tucker, De’Anthony Melton, Danuel House Jr., and Montrezl Harrell in order to help add to the bench unit and grow into a title contender in the league. That is a lot of talent on the roster as the Sixers move forward and they fixed a lot of the issues they needed to address heading into the offseason.

Team president Daryl Morey sat down with John Clark on “The Takeoff with John Clark podcast” and he addressed Harden’s hamstring injury as well as the new additions he and the front office made to the roster:

Sixers addition De’Anthony Melton plays pickup with Paul George, others

Philadelphia 76ers guard De’Anthony Melton played some pickup with Paul George and other NBA stars.

Back in June on draft night, the Philadelphia 76ers acquired De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for veteran Danny Green and the No. 23 pick, which turned out to be David Roddy. The Sixers were able to add a proven player who is expected to give a big boost to the bench.

Melton averaged 10.8 points and shot 37.4% from deep off the bench for Memphis in the 2021-22 season, and he should provide an upgrade to Philadelphia’s second unit.

He has also been busy all summer. He participated in the Drew League, in which he won the championship, and now he is participating in the Rico Hines runs at UCLA. Hines posted a video of some highlights on his Instagram and he tagged Melton as well as stars such as Paul George, John Wall and Pascal Siakam.

Top 3 most important Sixers heading into the 2022-23 NBA season

Here are the four most important players on the Philadelphia 76ers heading into the 2022-23 season.

The Philadelphia 76ers figure to be among the contenders to come out of the Eastern Conference when the 2022-23 season begins in October as they made some big moves in the offseason to build their depth around Joel Embiid and James Harden.

This new season will also mark the first full season of Harden in Philadelphia after the Sixers made the move at the deadline to acquire him from the Brooklyn Nets. The fact that he has had a full summer to build with his teammates should do wonders for him and the team.

As the season continues to approach, here are the three most important Sixers when it comes to the team’s success:

Sixers addition of De’Anthony Melton viewed as one of the best moves

The Philadelphia 76ers adding De’Anthony Melton in a trade is viewed as one of the best offseason moves of 2022.

In terms of publicity and fanfare, the addition of PJ Tucker has gained the most attention for the Philadelphia 76ers, who added depth and toughness to their roster.

However, one move that hasn’t gotten nearly as much publicity produced what the Sixers believe was absolutely essential help.

Philadelphia pulled off a draft night trade in June, sending Danny Green and David Roddy, the No. 23 pick in the 2022 draft, to the Memphis Grizzlies for De’Anthony Melton. The veteran out of USC is coming off a season during which he averaged 10.8 points off Memphis’ bench. He appears to be a very good pickup for the Sixers.

Bleacher Report put together a list of the top 10 most underrated offseason moves of 2022 and the Melton addition was ranked fourth:

Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris will largely carry the load for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, but De’Anthony Melton’s presence as a sixth man, playmaker and pesky defender could push them over the edge as a true title threat.

The 24-year-old can lock down opposing guards on the perimeter, and he finished second behind only new teammate Matisse Thybulle in steal percentage (3.0) last season. Melton also hit 40.6 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes, making him a great fit next to Harden.

With two years and $16.3 million remaining on his contract, Melton is a low-cost, big-impact rotation member who was one of the smartest offseason trade acquisitions.

Time will tell whether Melton will come in and give the Sixers the bench help they need, but on paper, this looks like a very good addition. He is a player who provides production on both ends of the floor and his playoff experience will be a big boost as well.

Sixers addition De’Anthony Melton wins Drew League championship

Philadelphia 76ers addition De’Anthony Melton takes home the 2022 Drew League championship.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquired De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies in a draft-night deal that sent out Danny Green and the draft rights to David Roddy as Philadelphia looked to improve the roster depth around its star duo.

Melton has proven himself on the NBA stage: He had a big 2021-22 season for the Grizzlies. Now he has taken another step, shining brightly in the Drew League.

On Sunday, Melton and Washington Wizards guard Delon Wright teamed to lead the Hometown Favorites to the Drew League championship in the 2022 summer circuit.

[pickup_prop id=”25698″]

Melton averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds off the bench for the Grizzlies while shooting 37.4% from deep. That type of production is going to be huge for the Sixers and their second unit and the athleticism he has shown during the summer has been impressive for somebody his size.

Bold predictions for PJ Tucker, other offseason additions for Sixers

Here are bold predictions for PJ Tucker and the other offseason additions for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers made offseason moves over the summer to add depth around stars Joel Embiid and James Harden. The Sixers wanted to upgrade the supporting cast, and they went out and made moves quickly.

On draft night, the team added De’Anthony Melton through a trade. Then they signed PJ Tucker, Danuel House Jr. and Trevelin Queen at the outset of free agency. While maybe only three of these players will have an impact on the floor, Sixers Wire has a bold prediction for all four.

B/R examines Sixers’ small-ball lineup for upcoming 2022-23 season

B/R configures an interesting small-ball lineup for the Philadelphia 76ers to use in the 2022-23 season.

The Philadelphia 76ers made a number of solid offseason moves to improve the depth around Joel Embiid and James Harden. That makes for some pretty interesting and diverse lineups for the upcoming season.

Sixers Wire already broke down the many lineups coach Doc Rivers can utilize in the coming season, but Bleacher Report had a wrinkle to the small-ball lineup that it originated.

B/R’s small-ball lineup for Philadelphia is Tyrese Maxey, De’Anthony Melton, Harden, Tobias Harris and PJ Tucker. B/R on that lineup:

Melton has quietly been one of the league’s better perimeter defenders over the last few seasons, and his 6’8″ wingspan allows him to hold up against wings on switches. And Tucker, who gained plenty of experience as a small-ball 5 with Houston, has the strength to at least challenge opposing big men if teams counter a lineup like this with size.

The other three inclusions here are fairly obvious. James Harden — a famously solid post defender himself — Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris can provide enough firepower for a configuration like this to dominate short spurts.

It will be interesting to see what Rivers and the Sixers will do when the season begins in October. This is a very good roster, and Philadelphia will have to decide on the best lineups for every situation outside of Harden and Embiid.
