DeAndre Moore Jr. breaks out of early season slump against Mississippi State

With Mississippi State in town on Saturday, Deandre Moore Jr. broke out of his slow start to spark the Longhorns offense in a 35-13 win

So far during the 2024 campaign, the Texas Longhorns have seemingly gotten a big performance from a wide receiver in every game. With Mississippi State in town on Saturday, DeAndre Moore Jr. broke out of his early season slump to spark the Longhorns offense in a 35-13 win. With Arch Manning under center, Moore thrived.

Against the Bulldogs, Moore led the Longhorns in receiving yards with 103 and touchdowns with two. While the talented sophomore only had four receptions, he averaged 25.8 yards per catch, which ranked second behind Johntay Cook II. Against an SEC opponent, Moore looked like a different player.

Entering play on Saturday Moore only had 23 receiving yards in three games this season. He was struggling to get targets in an offense that includes talented receivers such as Ryan Wingo, Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond. However he showed over the weekend the impact he can make and was a human highlight reel. The key will be building on his stellar performance as conference play continues.

As the Longhorns look to stay undefeated, they will face some tough secondaries in the coming weeks. That could open up opportunities for Moore as defensive coordinators focus on stopping Bond and Wingo. If the offense can build on its success, the Longhorns will be hard to stop.

Over the weekend, Moore showed he is a wide receiver who should not be left alone. When he is, Moore can be a difference-maker.

Moore will likely get an opportunity for more snaps in the upcoming season with the losses of Xavier Worthy, AD Mitchell, and Jordan Whittington to the NFL. How much he ultimately sees the field will depend on how he is progressing in year 2 under the tutelage of Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson.

WATCH: Arch Manning and DeAndre Moore putting in offseason work

Arch Manning is starting to build a connection with his wide receivers.

Arch Manning is wasting no time building a connection with his wide receivers upon his arrival to Texas. After enrolling early for the spring semester and having some trouble keeping track of his student ID, Arch is getting in some work on the practice field.

The five-star quarterback is seen here dropping a dime to fellow 2023 recruit DeAndre Moore in offseason training.

Manning and Moore are two vital pieces of Texas’ No. 3 ranked 2023 class.

Manning is arriving to Texas with tons of excitement. He is the second highest-rated prospect to sign with Texas out of high school in the history of recruiting rankings, behind only the legendary Vince Young.

Moore is one of three talented wideouts to sign with Texas this cycle, joining Johntay Cook and Ryan Niblett. The Longhorns flipped the four-star from Louisville late in the process.

HOOKED: Texas flips four-star WR DeAndre Moore from Louisville

Texas adds another elite wide receiver.

Texas adds another elite wide receiver to its 2023 recruiting class with an early signing period flip of DeAndre Moore Jr.

The four-star wideout had previously been committed to Louisville. The Cardinal could not fight off the late push from Steve Sarkisian and Texas’ staff. Georgia was also in the mix of late, but Moore ultimately decided on Texas as his future home.

247Sports composite rankings list Moore as the No. 17 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 95 overall prospect. He joins five-star Johntay Cook and four-star Ryan Niblett in what makes up an excellent wide receiver haul for the Longhorns.

Moore is a speedy player with great hands and route running. He excelled at the highest level of high school football playing a St. John Bosco in California. Moore profiles as a perfect dynamic playmaker for Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

Texas continues to trend for four-star WR DeAndre Moore Jr.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 WR in the On3 consensus.

The Alabama Crimson Tide dealt Texas a tough loss on the recruiting trail this week. Nick Saban won out for talented Longview wide receiver Jalen Hale.

It appears it only took the Longhorns a couple of days to get over the loss.

Steve Sarkisian and company are trending for a big time wide receiver in the 2023 class. Current Louisville commit DeAndre Moore Jr. appears to be keeping his options open, and Texas is squarely in the mix.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas entered a prediction in favor of the Longhorns on Thursday.

The elite receiver hails from St. John Bosco, a California private school you have probably heard if you follow recruiting closely. A win would be huge for Sarkisian as he tries to build a pipeline from California to Texas in recruiting.

Here is what On3 Sports had to say about Moore.

Has strong long speed, running a wind-legal 10.90 in the 100 meters as a junior. … Uses his burst to quickly get upfield after the catch. Shows good contact balance with the ability to bounce out of and break tackles at the second level.

Moore is the No. 81 overall player and No. 14 wide receiver in the On3 consensus.

2023 four-star WR DeAndre Moore Jr. decommits from Oklahoma Sooners

Despite a successful Jr. Day Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting efforts took a hit with the decommitment of 2023 four-star WR DeAndre Moore.

In a surprise turn of events, 2023 four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. has decommitted from the University of Oklahoma. Moore, who is the No. 48 player in the 2023 class according to 247Sports composite rankings will be reassessing his future as he heads into his senior season at Los Alamitos High School in California.

Moore made himself a fan favorite after reaffirming his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners in the wake of Lincoln Riley’s departure. DeAndre Moore is teammates of former Oklahoma commits Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon who flipped to USC.

Moore told Greg Biggins of 247Sports back in December:

I’ve been wanting to go to Oklahoma since the 7th grade. I don’t know how many people know that but it has always been my dream school and it was never about the coaching staff for me. I liked coach Riley, don’t get me wrong. I was looking forward to playing for him but that was more the cherry on top for me. I was going to Oklahoma because I love the school, and that’s still the case for me. – Moore via 247Sports

247Sports spoke with Moore about backing off of his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners and the four-star wide receiver mentioned that he hadn’t spoken with Brent Venables or Jeff Lebby yet, even though he’s remained in constant contact with DeMarco Murray.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been making strong headway in their efforts to build up a 2023 recruiting class that saw several commitments disappear after Riley left for USC. Moore is the sixth player to decommit from the 2023 recruiting class in the last couple of months.

Oklahoma could certainly get back in the game on DeAndre Moore before national signing day a year from now, but the perceived slight by not meeting with Moore might be enough to keep him looking elsewhere for his college football future.

Oklahoma Sooners land 4-star running back Jovantae Barnes out of Nevada

2022 four-star running back Jovantae Barnes commits to the Oklahoma Sooners.

After a long, long recruiting process and one that we’ve chronicled in detail here at Sooners Wire, Jovantae Barnes is finally a Sooner. Despite the recent coaching change, Barnes was trending in the direction of the Crimson and Cream long before Lincoln Riley’s exodus.

Oklahoma’s biggest threats were USC and Florida State. However, Barnes was not swayed to USC despite Riley’s move. Florida State’s decline probably wasn’t attractive and former FSU offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham took that same job at Oregon.

Barnes’ recruitment was led by the king of Sin City (in the eyes of Sooners fans at least), DeMarco Murray. Murray’s relationship to Barnes, his connection to Nevada, and his NFL success resonated with Barnes.

Barnes brings fresh legs and loads of upside to the Sooners running back group along with fellow four-star and Oklahoma signee Gavin Sawchuk. Barnes shines the brightest running between the tackles and figures to be a beast putting on more muscle after some time with Coach Jerry Schmidt in the offseason.

Barnes’ recruitment has a slight ripple effect long-term on the Sooners’ recruiting efforts in 2023 as well.

Barnes has a close friendship with 2023 commit DeAndre Moore Jr, also a native of Nevada. Both are reportedly really close and both have a great relationship with DeMarco Murray. So much so, Moore took to social media to announce he’d be still committed to Oklahoma despite Lincoln Riley’s departure as long as Murray was coaching at Oklahoma. Adding one of his childhood friends to the team will probably also go a long way of keeping Moore in the fold too.

What are the Sooners getting in DeAndre Moore Jr?

What are the Oklahoma Sooners getting from 2023 five-star commit DeAndre Moore Jr?

The Oklahoma Sooners don’t have any plans to slow down in recruiting for the 2023 class. They started strong and have remained strong through the summer into the fall. The start was strong enough that they lay claim to the nation’s number one recruiting class as it currently stands on 247Sports.

The latest member to join the class is DeAndre Moore Jr. He’s really a five-star athlete with the ability to play wide receiver or safety at the Power 5 level. Currently, the Sooners have plans to use him as a wide receiver when he gets on campus. Here’s what Oklahoma is getting in DeAndre Moore Jr:

Moore’s film showcases why he’s going to be a dangerous weapon for the Sooners’ offense. Moore routinely wins out of the slot and lined up outside.

He’s listed at 5’11 190 pounds and could conceivably grow another inch or so before he even laces up his cleats to play for Oklahoma. Moore’s ability to run and threaten defensive backs vertically opens up underneath and intermediate routes for himself. He looks comfortable catching passes in awkward spots like falling backward or adjusting mid-air over defenders.

His ability to stack receivers and get them out of their backpedal due to his speed will help him push for early playing time as the Sooners are always looking for guys to help open up the vertical passing game. He has strong hands and a wide catch radius as well. Moore missed an entire year of high school due to COVID which was a reason for his transfer to Los Alamitos High School.

As with many high school receivers that look to make the transition from high school to college, the biggest thing Moore will have to compete with is himself in the weight room. Defensive backs in college are stronger and more like to put hands on him coming out of his releases. More strength will allow him to play through and let his legs and feet do what they do best.

Personally, I love the way he attacks the ball in the air. It never feels like he’s waiting for it to come to him. He looks like he’s going to get it. Take a look below as he is catching a touchdown pass from his current and future teammate at Oklahoma, Malachi Nelsonn.

Moore is confident and has good lateral quickness in short routes as well. He’s not afraid to go and get a ball despite being listed at just 5’11.

Lincoln Riley, DeMarco Murray, and Dennis Simmons are doing major work right now surrounding Caleb Williams and Malachi Nelson with the players to be successful. The work on the recruiting trail can and will pay massive dividends on the field when the time comes.

2023 5-star wide receiver narrows top 5, sets commitment date

Another five-star wide receiver has the Oklahoma Sooners in his top five as he sets his commitment date. Can the Sooners add another star to their already stellar 2023 recruiting class?

Stop us if you’ve heard this before but the Oklahoma Sooners have yet another 5-star wide receiver recruit within their sights.

As frequent as it’s been over the years, it’s probably not ever something the Oklahoma staff will take for granted. Listed as a 5-star wide receiver on 247Sports, DeAndre Moore Jr will announce his commitment on September 24th.

As seen in the graphic above, Oklahoma joins Florida State, Oregon, Alabama, and USC in the final five for Moore’s talents.

Oklahoma is in an excellent spot to land Moore. Moore transferred from Las Vegas Desert Pines after missing an entire season after COVID-19 forced his school to cancel an entire season. He transferred this summer to Los Alamitos High School in California. If you’re wondering where you’ve seen that school’s name, it’s because it’s become a bit of a pipeline for the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Sooners secured commitments from Los Alamitos stars Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon this summer as part of the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Both have been recruiting Moore and he would only add to the Sooners top-ranked 2023 class. He would also give Oklahoma three commitments from the top five players in the state of California.

Moore’s a speed and agility merchant from the slot with the ability to line up outside the numbers and make plays. He would all but solidify Oklahoma’s wide receiver quota for 2023 barring a commitment from one or two other high-ranking receivers also in play.

As it stands, Oklahoma is playing the waiting game but it’s hard to ignore where Oklahoma stands in this race and not like their chances to land DeAndre Moore to an already stellar 2023 recruiting class.
