Prediction

Celtics 111, Suns 103

Moneyline (ML)

The Suns, coming off a big win on the road over the New York Knicks are big underdogs at +260. The Celtics don’t offer any value at -334, but have lost two straight games. The Celtics are 7-5 after a loss and 15-4 when favored at home. Phoenix is 4-12 after a win, but is 5-7 as a road dog. The Suns have had some surprising wins against very good teams this season but will be without one of their top scorers and defenders in Oubre. While C Deandre Ayton was huge in the win vs. the Knicks, the Suns have struggled with the 3-point shot. The CELTICS are the smart bet here, even at –334.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Celtics returns a profit of $2.99 if they prevail.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CELTICS are -7.5 (-110). The Suns won and covered the spread against the Knicks, but failed to cover the previous five games. The Celtics have covered in three of their last four games. The Suns are 7-9 ATS after a win and 8-4 ATS as a road dog. The Celtics are 8-4 ATS after a loss and 10-8-1 as a home favorite. But, again, with no Oubre and maybe no Johnson, The Suns will just be short on firepower. It will be close, but take the CELTICS -7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 224.5 points. Suns games have gone Under in five of the last six games and six of the last eight. Celtics games have gone Over in three of the last four. They are 6-6 O/U after a loss and 10-9 O/U as a home favorite. The Suns are 7-9 O/U after a win and 6-6 O/U as road dogs.

With the Suns struggling mostly with the 3-ball and down Oubre in the starting lineup, in addition to Boston’s defense, expect this game to go UNDER (-110).

Prediction

Knicks 117, Suns 113

Moneyline (ML)

People are stuck on the early season horribleness of the Knicks (BetMGM oddsmakers included) and haven’t adjusted their power rankings on them since firing former head coach David Fizdale, and replacing him with interim bench boss Mike Miller Dec. 6. Under Miller, the Knicks have markedly improved, going 6-6 outright and 8-4 against the spread.

The Knicks have improved drastically in points per game, opponent’s PPG, field-goal percentage, margin of victory, opponent’s 3-point percentage, defensive rating, offensive rating, defensive rebounding percentage, and then I stopped tracking them. Point is, the Knicks were awful under Fizdale and they are respectable under Miller (through 12 games).

If you like an underdog to cover then there has to be a chance they win outright. Making a smaller wager on the moneyline, but a bigger bet on the spread, is a gambling angle I’ll take to maximize return on investment when betting underdogs. For example, place 30-50% of your total wager on the KNICKS (+225) because we’re going to take the Knicks with the points, as well.

New to sports betting? A $50 bet on the Knicks to win returns a profit of $112.50.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Let’s back the Knicks in this matchup because they have recent success in their betting position compared to the Suns. To elaborate, the Knicks are 4-2 when they are 5-7-point underdogs, whereas the Suns have a 0-2 record as 5-7-point favorites. Also, the Knicks are 9-7 as road dogs and the Suns are 5-5 as home favorites.

Recent trends also give the Knicks a slight edge: They are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games while the Suns are 5-4-1. Combining these factors, and the moneyline handicap above, there is a ton of line value in the number. HAMMER the KNICKS (+6.5, -110).

New to sports betting? A $110 bet on the Knicks to lose by 6 or fewer points or win outright returns a profit of $100.

Over/under (O/U)

Neither team plays good defense. The Suns rank 19th in opponents’ PPG and defensive rating while the Knicks rank 17th in opponents’ PPG and 21st in defensive rating. Also, the Suns have the most Overs when playing at home in the NBA (12-5 Over/Under record).

Furthermore, I expect some revenge motivation from Knicks PF Marcus Morris who played for the Suns from 2012-2015. Morris has played above his averages in eight games he’s played against the Suns—16.5 PPG, .536 field-goal percentage and .452 3-point percentage (career averages: 11.9 PPG, .431 FG% and .367 3-point%). Finally, the Suns’ 20-14 Over/Under record (12-5 at home) has me leaning toward a tiny wager on OVER 224.5 (-121).

LeBron James gets 30-point triple-double in win over Suns

The Los Angeles Lakers led by as many as 36 points but weren’t able to blow out the Phoenix Suns in their first game of 2020.

For a few brief moments in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Los Angeles Lakers would be victims of the first 30-plus point collapse of the new year. But they were able to hold things together and avoid blowing a 36-point lead in their win Wednesday over the Phoenix Suns, 117-110.

LeBron James had 31 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists as the Lakers defeated the Phoenix Suns. It’s L.A.’s third straight victory, one that looked like it would be an easy one where LeBron and Anthony Davis wouldn’t have to play in the fourth quarter. But the Suns were pesky, getting the Lakers lead down to seven with 2:13 left but they were unable to stop the Lakers in the final moments.

The Lakers jumped out to the huge lead thanks to great defense and some hot shooting from the field. The Lakers made their first 11 field goal attempts of the game, helping them build a 43-17 first quarter lead.

Devin Booker led the comeback with 32 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 26 points while Deandre Ayton was a force in the middle with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lakers remain at home for the next few days and they’ll host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.

Prediction

Trail Blazers 121, Suns 113

Moneyline (ML)

The Trail Blazers (-182) have won 11 in a row in this series, but you can’t risk nearly two times your return. PASS and look to the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Nuggets to win outright returns a profit of $5.50.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The TRAIL BLAZERS (-4.5, -106) are plus-money laying less than three buckets. Sign me up. If Ayton were there in the middle, I’d worry about the Suns (+4.5, -115) coming in and stealing one, but he isn’t, and they won’t.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 230.5 (-115) is worth a look in this one, as it has cashed in five of the past six meetings in Rip City. The Over is 4-1 in Phoenix’s past five overall, too, and 4-0 in the past four as an underdog. The Over is 29-12-1 in the past 42 at home for the Blazers, too.

Prediction

Suns 118, Rockets 115

Moneyline (ML)

The SUNS (+240) are a decent value at home at better than double money. This is going to be a close game, and if Ayton is in the lineup, that will really tip the scales in favor of the home side.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Clippers to win outright returns a profit of $24.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SUNS (+6.5, -105) are 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings with the Rockets (-6.5, -115). In addition, Houston is a dismal 3-8 ATS in the past 11 as a road favorite, 1-6 ATS in the past seven overall as a favorite and 1-6 ATS in the past seven against losing teams.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 234.5 (-128) is worth a look, as it has cashed in 10 of the past 13 at home for Phoenix, and 15 of the past 22 overall. For the Rockets, the Under has dominated, although the Over is 10-2 in the past 12 meetings between these teams in the Valley of the Sun.

Gilgeous-Alexander sets new career-high in 126-108 win over Suns

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points and five other Thunder players were in double-digits as Oklahoma City dominated the Suns, 126-108.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a man on a mission Friday night.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 32 points in Oklahoma City’s blowout win, 126-108 over the Phoenix Suns.

The Thunder have now won 8 of their last 11 games, including three in a row.

In addition to Gilgeous-Alexander’s game-high, Oklahoma City had fairly even scoring up and down their lineup. Dennis Schroder came off the bench to score 24, while Danilo Gallinari had 22. Chris Paul, Steven Adams, and Nerlens Noel were all in double-digits as well with 13, 10, and 10, respectively.

Even that pesky third quarter that Oklahoma City has struggled with this season didn’t provide too many problems as the Thunder scored 44 points in the third quarter alone.

Deandre Ayton did not play for the Suns on Friday.

He suffered a sprained right ankle earlier in the week against the Clippers. That was his only game back after serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive for a diuretic.

With the win, the Thunder move back to .500 on the season at 14-14. Oklahoma City is 10-5 inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. OKC is back in action on Sunday when they host the Clippers.

The game will be the first time that Paul George was returned to Oklahoma City is asking for a trade to Los Angeles in the offseason.

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers sports betting odds and lines, with NBA betting picks, tips and best bets.

Suns at Clippers: Key injuries

Suns: SG Tyler Johnson (illness) and PG Devin Booker (forearm) are each listed as questionable. C DeAndre Ayton (suspension) is eligible to return Tuesday after a 25-game suspension.

Clippers: PF Jeff Green (tailbone) is not expected to play, while PG Patrick Beverley (concussion) is a question mark. SG Lou Williams (calf) is also questionable.

Suns at Clippers: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Clippers 118, Suns 111

Moneyline (ML)

The Clippers (-910) are heavily favored to win, but they’re not a great play. Risking over nine times the return is just hacky, even if you had this in a 10-game parlay. Plus, Ayton is a real wild card in his return for the Suns (+575).

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SUNS (+12.5, -105) are on a 4-1-1 ATS run across their past six games, and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 games overall. They’re playing on the second end of a back-to-back, but they’re 9-3 ATS in the past 12 games when working on no rest. While the Suns are 0-7 ATS in the past seven trips to L.A., and 2-7 ATS in the past nine meetings, Ayton’s return should spark something in the Suns. However, watch Booker’s status, especially. If he is unable to return, it negates the return of Ayton substantially.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. There are just too many variables to bet the total (224.5) in this game. Will Ayton return with a vengeance, or will he be rusty? Booker’s status also makes things rather questionable in terms of the total. The Over is 5-0 in Phoenix’s past five on no rest, and 4-0 in L.A.’s past four following a straight-up loss. If there is a lean, it’s to the Over (-128). But good luck with that. Too risky.
