Dead By Daylight surpasses 50 million players

Behaviour Interactive’s asymmetrical horror title shatters another milestone.

Any doubt regarding Dead By Daylight’s popularity was thoroughly snuffed-out with its most recent milestone.

On Tuesday, Behaviour Interactive announced that Dead By Daylight has surpassed 50 million players. A staggering achievement for any game, let alone one about dressing up as Michael Myers, Ghostface, or Freddy Krueger to terrorize people trying to fix randomly broken generators. Scary stuff sells, even as a spooky garnish on hyper-competitive multiplayer romps. Though Dead By Daylight’s consistent content updates, like the recent Ringu Chapter, undoubtedly help with staying power.

“Thank you to all of our players,” Behaviour Interactive said on Twitter. “We hope to see you in the fog!”

Despite Dead By Daylight’s success, Behaviour Interactive is no stranger to controversy. Last fall, an NFT collaboration upset many fans, making the studio clarify its position on the controversial blockchain technology. In fairness, Behaviour Interactive takes plenty of community feedback to heart, as was the case with the recent Leatherface cosmetics debacle.

Surprisingly, Dead By Daylight still doesn’t have many competitors within the asymmetrical multiplayer horror genre. Stuff like Friday the 13th: The Game came and went rather quickly, though there are interesting projects like Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre looming on the horizon.

Dead By Daylight’s Sadako is scaring the life out of streamers

Some jump scares are well worth it.

Ringu’s Sadako has a reputation of being among horror’s scariest figures, and Dead By Daylight streamers are learning that the hard way.

With the arrival of Dead By Daylight’s Sadako Rising Chapter, a whole new generation is learning why many of us are still afraid to walk past open wells. Mostly because of a sneaky jump scare hidden in pre-match lobbies.

If you select Sadako before a match, she periodically sprints towards the camera, likely scaring the bejesus out of unsuspecting fans. Well, it’s more of a teleportation tick meant to mimic Sadako climbing out of TVs like in Ringu, but still, it’s the kind of thing that’ll potentially make somebody’s heart skip a beat. Watch the clip below to see what I mean.

Naturally, this sneaky jump scare is catching a lot of Day By Daylight streamers off guard while they take a look at her perks and abilities. Unfortunate for them, entertaining for you — so take a look at the best reactions to Sadako below.

Dead by Daylight: Sadako Rising Chapter perks and abilities

Here’s what to expect from the Ringu update.

The Sadako Rising Chapter for Dead By Daylight brings everyone’s favorite terrifying ghost girl from Ringu back, and there’s plenty to learn about this spectral assassin.

First off, while Sadako Rising isn’t coming out formally until March 8, 2022, switching to Dead By Daylight’s Public Test Build (PTB) will give you access to Sadako Yamamura and Yoichi Asakawa, the new Killer and survivor characters, respectively, well ahead of the chapter’s launch. To access the PTB, simply right-click Dead By Daylight’s Steam launcher, select ‘properties,’ click on the ‘betas’ tab, and opt into the PTB build via the dropdown menu, and voila!

Sadako Abilities

Like every other Killer in Dead By Daylight, Sadako’s formal title is “The Onryō,” so any description mentioning “Onryō” is about Sadako.

The Onryō’s Power: Deluge of Fear

Before Manifesting, The Onryō gains the Undetectable status effect and is invisible to Survivors, but becomes intermittently visible when she’s within 32 meters of them.

Special Ability: Manifestation

The Onryō must physically manifest to attack Survivors. Press and hold the power button to Manifest into material form in your current position. For a brief duration after Manifesting, The Onryō will continue to be intermittently visible to Survivors when she’s within 32 meters for as long as she remains Manifested. The Onryō can Demanifest by pressing and holding the power button.

Special Ability: Projection

The Onryō can also take physical form by Projecting herself through a TV. Press the ability button while looking at a powered TV to Project into it, shutting the TV off in the process. All Survivors within 16 Meters of the TV gain Condemned progress. A fully Condemned Survivor is reveal by Killer Instinct and can be killed once downed.

Sadako Perks

Scourge Hook: Floods of Rage

  • You form a psychic connection with The Entity and alter the rules of the trial.
  • At the start of the trial, up to four random hooks are changed into scourge hooks. You see their auras in white.
  • When a Survivor is unhooked from a scourge hook, all other Survivors have their auras revealed for five seconds.

Merciless Storm

  • Your horrible trauma is felt by everyone.
  • When a generator reaches 90 percent progress, Survivors working on the generator will be faced with continuous Skill Checks. If they miss or stop repairing, the generator is blocked for 16 seconds.
  • Merciless Storm can only trigger once per generator per trial.

Call of Brine

  • Your psychic abilities influence technology in devastating ways.
  • After damaging a generator, this perk becomes active for 60 seconds.
  • The generator regresses at 150 percent of the normal regression speed, and its aura is revealed to you.
  • Each time a Survivor completes a good Skill Check on a generator affected by this perk, you receive a loud noise notification.

Yoichi Asakawa Perks

What would a Ringu update be without Yoichi? He’s all grown up from the original 1998 film and ready to remind Sadako that nobody watches VHS tapes anymore.

Boon: Dark Theory

  • Your obsessive study of the paranormal has given you unparalleled knowledge of other realms and planes of existence.
  • Press and hold the ability button near a Dull or Hex Totem to bless it and create a Boon Totem. Soft chimes echo out in a 24-meter range.
  • Any Survivors within the Boon Totem’s range gain a 2 percent Haste status effect. This effect lingers for 2 seconds after leaving the Boon Totem’s range.
  • You can bless one Totem at a time. All equipped boon perks are active on your Boon Totem.

Empathic Connection

  • Your presence psychically projects itself to Survivors in danger.
  • Whenever another Survivor is injured, they can see your aura within 32 meters.
  • You heal other Survivors 10 percent faster.

Parental Guidance

  • You have inherited the ability to hear the dead, and now, the dead warn you of danger.
  • After stunning the Killer, your scratch marks, pools of blood, and grunts of pain are hidden for 8 seconds.

Dead By Daylight’s Sadako Rising Chapter gets a spooky reveal trailer

Sadako finally makes hers debut.

Few horror characters inspire fear quite like Ringu’s Sadako, and she’s crawling through the nearest TV and into Dead By Daylight.

The Sadako Rising Chapter brings the horror icon Sadako Yamamura to Dead By Daylight at long last. For those of you more familiar with The Ring (2002), Ringu is the original Japanese film franchise that started it all. So the creepy ghost girl Samara from The Ring was, in truth, a western spin on Ringu’s Sadako. There’s also a new survivor named Yoichi Asakawa, who was just a boy in the original Ringu, but he’s all grown up now.

Starting Tuesday, you can play both characters on Dead By Daylight’s Public Test Build (PTB). The Sadako Rising Chapter comes out March 8, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox Ones, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Stadia, and PC via Steam and The Epic Games Store.

Dead By Daylight creative director Dave Richard is happy about bringing a new flavor of horror to the asymmetrical horror phenomenon

Ringu introduces psychological horror to our game, which is very different from the slasher style our fans are used to. They can expect Sadako to come with creepy and surprising gameplay mechanics that are not found in other Killers,” Richard said in a press release. “Survivors beware, she will freak you out!”

Behaviour Interactive also worked closely with the Kadokawa Corporation, which owns Ringu. Reiko Imayasu, a producer on the film series, seems content with Dead By Daylight’s depiction of Sadako.

“I am very honored that this very iconic horror character from Japan will step into the Fog. Sadako, with her long black hair and white dress, is a tragic woman, beautiful and dignified, yet she pulls you into her quiet terror,” Imayasu said in a press release. “The Dead by Daylight team did a great job in representing her characteristics in the game. I am convinced that it will be a chapter unlike any other.”

It’s been a busy few months for Dead By Daylight. First, there was that whole NFT debacle, then the removal of some cosmetics that were in poor taste.

Dead By Daylight is doing a crossover with SAW this week

It’s time to play a game.

A new Archives Tome is about to release for Dead By Daylight, and this one is bringing the maniacal Jigsaw killer into the mix.

Archives Tome 10: SAW will release for Dead By Daylight  on Jan. 26, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Anyone on PC can pick Dead By Daylight  up on either Steam or the  Epic Games Store

It’s important to note that, unlike the recent Ringu  chapter announcement, Jigsaw isn’t going to be a playable killer in Dead By Daylight. After all, there’s already a SAW  chapter! Archive Tome 10: SAW will explore the minds of Detective Tapp and Amanda Young, and it’s full of cosmetic rewards (60 in total) for both characters.

Dead By Daylight  game director Mathieu Côté stated that this crossover with Lionsgate films is part of  Behaviour Interactive’s  ongoing mission to bring fresh content to its community.

“Over and above our primary objective of providing our fans with fun and continuously renewed content, one of our goals when integrating a powerful movie franchise such as SAW is to invite a larger community into the Dead by Daylight universe,” Côté said via IGN. “We’re truly grateful to our partner Lionsgate for offering us this opportunity.”

Dead By Daylight removes certain cosmetics following harassment reports

Behaviour Interactive addresses community concerns.

Behaviour Interactive will remove specific cosmetics following widespread reports of racist harassment in Dead By Daylight

The Cannibal, better known as Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is one of Dead By Daylight’s  many playable killers. Like in the 1974 film, Leatherface can wear the faces of his victims as a cosmetic, or at least he can with the original four survivor characters after completing specific challenges. One of these survivors is an African American woman named Claudette Morel.

Many Dead by Daylight  community members have been outspoken about this particular cosmetic as it closely resembles  blackface, and many  African American players allegedly experience racist harassment  from Leatherface players wearing this cosmetic.

Now, developer Behaviour Interactive  is addressing the problem in an update.

“Members of the community have shared their experiences with people targeting and harassing them while using some of these masks, Behaviour Interactive said  in a statement. “These reports were disheartening to hear, and we absolutely condemn this behaviour. We are not comfortable having these masks in the game when they are used as a tool to spread hate. To that end, we will be removing The Cannibal’s unlockable faces in this upcoming Mid-Chapter.”

Most Dead by Daylight  fans are pretty happy about the removal of these cosmetics.

There’s no date on when this update will go live, but it should be within the next few weeks or so.

Dead By Daylight fan gives up chase following stern talking-to

Hunter becomes the hunted.

Sometimes, a good old-fashioned finger wag is enough to put someone in their place — at least it was in a particularly knee-slap worthy match of  Dead By Daylight.

Over on Reddit, user Borotroth shared a cute clip of them fending off a killer in the most bizarre way possible: by scolding them via finger-pointing emotes. After a few good pokes, the killer decides to turn tail and run, like a child that’s received a stern talking-to from a parent. Typically, something like this would result in the survivor player getting clotheslined, yet that wasn’t the case. What a power move.

Check out the clip in question from Dead By Daylight for yourself below.

Some killers just need a stern talking to from deadbydaylight

One can practically smell the sheer overwhelming shame emanating from that killer, don’t think that would happen in the movies. Talk about the hunter becoming the hunted.

Dead By Daylight made manyfans happy with the recent announcement that there’ll be a crossover with Japanese horror classic Ringu. The timing couldn’t be better, either, as loads of people were upset at  Dead by Daylight  developer Behavior Interactive over an NFT partnership. However, the studio clarified that  no blockchain technology would be in the game itself.

Dead By Daylight is getting a Ringu Chapter in March 2022

Seven days….

Ringu, the Japanese horror masterpiece, is coming to Dead By Daylight  in the form of a new chapter.

The Ringu  Chapter will be Dead By Daylight’s  latest crossover with an iconic horror series — arguably the most influential of the past three decades. Koji Suzuki’s original novel Ring went on to have a legendary film Japanese film adaptation in 1998, which itself inspired 2002’s The Ring  starring Naomi Watts.

This chapter is centering on Ringu, though, not The Ring. So that means the killer will likely be Sadako Yamamura rather than her western counterpart Samara. Good thing, too, cause Ringu  is a way better film. Sorry, I’m right.

You can check out a trailer for Dead By Daylight’s  Ringu  chapter for yourself below.

[mm-video type=video id=01fpxkx94h42rzd6c8by playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fpxkx94h42rzd6c8by/01fpxkx94h42rzd6c8by-7d070ef3de7c5670f6d62aaedbf6d130.jpg]

There’s no confirmation yet whether Sadako will be in it or not, but given her iconic water well is in the trailer, it’s a safe bet.

Dead By Daylight  game director Mathieu Cote had nothing but good things to say about this new chapter.

“The importance of the Ringu  franchise in Japan, and its influence on culture around the world are undeniable. To be given the opportunity to dive into that legendary story as we bring this creation into Dead by Daylight is an immense honor,” Cote said in a press release. “This new Chapter will give our players something intensely dark and troubling, a real heart-pounding experience that adds to the already high intensity of our game.”

The Ringu Chapter   will release sometime in March 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Dead By Daylight also recently  came to the Epic Games Store.
