Aaron Rodgers has elite comparison for Jets rookie Olu Fashanu

The bar is already high for Olu Fashanu before his first-career start with the New York Jets.

Fashanu, the 11th overall pick at the 2024 NFL draft, is set to start in place of veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses against the Denver Broncos in Week 4. During New York’s 24-3 win over the New England Patriots last week, Fashanu replaced Moses when he injured his knee and the veteran is slated to now miss multiple weeks.

Ahead of the big moment, Fashanu is confident.

“I’m pretty comfortable,” Fashanu said. “I feel like I’m in a pretty good spot right now.”

Against the Pats, Pro Football Focus graded Moses a 50.8 overall. PFF graded Fashanu a 70.8 during his 14 snaps played.

It’s a small sample size, but something to build on. Just like Aaron Rodgers’ comparison for Fashanu.

The Jets quarterback said Fashanu reminds him of one of the team’s all-time great offensive linemen: D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

“I don’t like to do a lot of comparisons, but I will in this case,” Rodgers said. “Very confident in him.”

Jets great D’Brickashaw Ferguson announces he is going to nursing school

Best of luck to Brick!

D’Brickashaw Ferguson will go down as one of the greatest players in the history of the New York Jets. That was cemented last season when the Jets inducted him into their Ring of Honor. He gave a lot to fans on the football field. Now, he’ll look to give back in a different way.

Ferguson recently appeared on the “NFL Players Second Acts” podcast with Charles Tillman and Roman Harper and announced that he will be attending nursing school.

Ferguson had already taken prerequisite classes at community college and will start nursing school in the fall. Ferguson wanted to show he can offer more than just football.

“I wanted something that I could offer. Like, yes I play football, but I have this,” Ferguson said, via CBS Sports. “I’m qualified to do this work and I play football. So if both of them help or encourage one another, great. But even without football I can still do my job with excellence, that’s something we learned as athletes.”

Ferguson earned a degree in religious studies while at Virginia. He’ll now go after work in the medical field, possibly as a nurse practitioner or in urgent care.

Paris Johnson draws comparison to Jets great D’Brickashaw Ferguson

Wouldn’t it be something if the Jets get the next D’Brickashaw Ferguson?

Comparisons to current NFL players are always an interesting part of the draft process to help fans get an understanding of who a prospect is and what he can be. And one prospect constantly linked to the Jets in mock drafts is getting compared to one of the greatest players in Jets’ history.

Our buddy Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recently made NFL comparisons for each of his top 50 prospects in the 2023 draft and Jets fans will love his connection for Ohio State offensive tackle Paris Johnson. That would be none other than Jets’ great and member of their Ring of Honor D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

“Selected fourth overall by the Jets in the 2006 draft out of Virginia, Ferguson combined athletic ability with developed power to make three Pro Bowls in his 10-year career. Ferguson occasionally dealt with bouts of iffy protection, but overall, he availed himself well in the run and pass games. Johnson could rise to that level over time.”

Pretty safe to say that if Johnson’s career has that kind of trajectory and he lands with the Jets, the left side of the line will be in good hands for a long time.

Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson to be inducted into Jets’ Ring of Honor

The Jets will induct Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson into their Ring of Honor as members of the Class of 2022

The New York Jets will celebrate three of the franchise’s all-time greats this year as part of the Ring of Honor Class of 2022. The team announced on Thursday that Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson will be inducted into the Ring of Honor, with each player being recognized on separate dates.

Mangold will be honored on Sept. 25 when the Jets host the Bengals, Ferguson’s ceremony will take place on Oct. 30 against the Patriots, and Revis will round out the group on No. 27 during the Jets-Bears game.

Mangold played his entire 11-year career with the Jets, spanning 2006-2016. He made the Pro Bowl seven times, was a first-team All-Pro twice and only missed 12 games in his career – eight of which came in 2016 alone.

Entering the NFL in the same class as Mangold, Ferguson was the fourth overall pick in 2006 and played 10 seasons with the Jets, all at left tackle. He never missed a game and was a three-time Pro Bowler, providing steady play at one of the most important positions on offense.

Revis joined the Jets one year later in 2007 as the 14th overall selection, playing the first six years of his career in New York. He then played one year with the Bucs in 2013 and one with the Patriots in 2014 before returning to the Jets for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. While with the Jets, he made the Pro Bowl five times and was a first-team All-Pro three times in New York (four total in his career). He recorded 29 interceptions in 11 NFL seasons and is destined for the Hall of Fame.

2020 NFL draft: Jets take plug and play tackle in Todd McShay’s first mock

In ESPN’s Todd McShay’s latest mock, he has the Jets taking University of Georgia OT Andrew Thomas with the No. 7 overall pick.

In Todd McShay’s first 2020 mock draft, the Jets break tradition.

New York has gone the past 13 years without drafting an offensive lineman. However, the Jets break that streak in the ESPN’s personality’s first mock draft.

McShay has the Jets taking Georgia OT Andrew Thomas with the seventh overall pick. In this mock, Thomas is the first offensive lineman off the board.

Here’s McShay’s explanation for the pick:

When you invest an early draft pick in a franchise quarterback, as the Jets did with Sam Darnold in 2018, you have protect him. New York hasn’t, allowing 48 sacks this season (fourth most in the NFL). Both tackle positions could be upgraded in the offseason. Thomas is athletic and powerful, and he shows natural ability in the trenches.

Thomas officially declared for the draft on Tuesday. He’s a player that should be at the top of the Jets’ draft board given their continuous struggles on the offensive line. Kelvin Beachum is also set to become a free agent.

The last time the Jets took an offensive lineman in the first round was 2006. With Eric Mangini calling the shots, the Jets double-dipped on offesnive line help, selecting Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson in Round 1.

Thomas won’t immediately solve the Jets’ problems on the offensive line, but he can only help one of the league’s worst units. The Georgia product would be a building block of the future as Sam Darnold’s blindside blocker. Joe Douglas knows is a former offensive lineman and knows it all starts in the trenches, so don’t be surprised if this pick comes to fruition.
