Bears 2021 rookie season review: WR Dazz Newsome

Dazz Newsome had a lot of intrigue and hype after being drafted. Unfortunately, he spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears drafted seven players in the 2021 NFL draft, where a number of them made significant contributions on offense, defense or special teams during their rookie season.

Continuing with their offensive-heavy approach in the draft, the Bears selected wide receiver Dazz Newsome in the sixth round out of North Carolina. Newsome was billed as a speedy receiver who could be a huge asset on special teams. Unfortunately, he spent the majority of the season on the practice squad.

Here’s a brief overview of his rookie season and how he might contribute moving forward.

Bears 2021 WR review: Plenty of question marks outside of Darnell Mooney

We’re taking a look at how the Bears wide receivers fared in 2021.

Studs and duds from Bears’ collapse vs. Vikings in season finale

The Bears blew a halftime lead against the Vikings in their finale. In the midst of the disaster, there were some standout performances.

The Chicago Bears’ 2021 season finally came to an end on Sunday, and given the craziness that has taken place over the last month and a half at Halas Hall, it could not have come any sooner.

The Bears took on the Minnesota Vikings in a game that meant nothing other than the fact that it’s likely the final game for both head coaches.

It was Nagy, however, who had the upper hand early as the Bears took a 14-3 lead into halftime. But things deteriorated quickly in the second half as Mike Zimmer’s Vikings scored 28 points to win 31-17.

It was a sloppy game filled with awful decision making, protection issues, and a second half collapse that would put to rest any lingering doubt of the changes that must be made this week.

But in the midst of this disaster, some players have actually stood out for having very solid performances. Here are the studs and duds for the final time this season.

Bears sign WR Dazz Newsome from practice squad to active roster

Bears rookie Dazz Newsome could see opportunities on offense and special teams with Jakeem Grant on IR.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for their season finale against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, where they’ll be looking to end the season — and Matt Nagy’s tenure — on a high note.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, the Bears signed rookie wide receiver Dazz Newsome from the practice squad to the active roster.

Newsome has spent most of the 2021 season on the practice squad, where he made his NFL debut Dec. 20 against the Vikings. Newsome saw his most action the following week against the Seattle Seahawks, where he caught one pass for 10 yards and returned one punt for 28 yards, which set up a touchdown.

Newsome could see some more opportunities Sunday, both on offense and as a punt returner, as Jakeem Grant was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.

Bears rookie Dazz Newsome has a special punt return ritual

Darnell Mooney revealed Bears teammate Dazz Newsome’s hilarious punt return ritual.

Bears rookie wide receiver Dazz Newsome is among the players who’s gotten valuable reps over the last couple of weeks after the team was hit by COVID-19 and injuries.

Newsome, who’s seen extended time at receiver, also specializes as a punt returner. And with Pro Bowler Jakeem Grant sidelined with a concussion for the last two weeks, Newsome has gotten an opportunity to return punts.

His most impressive punt came last Sunday, when he returned one 28 yards to set up a Bears touchdown against the Seahawks.

Newsome’s teammate Darnell Mooney told reporters that Newsome has his own ritual before he does out for punt returns, and it’s awesome.

“To the crib on me. To the crib on three.”

Newsome’s improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed by teammates and coaches, and the expectation is he’ll have a chance to serve as a real contributor next season.

“I would say he’s one of the most improved players that we have and I’ve seen that throughout the season—on scout team and going against these guys,” wide receivers coach Mike Furrey said. “His confidence of playing the game, his savviness of playing the game, he’s a football player.”

Studs and duds from Bears’ comeback win vs. Seahawks

There were quite a few Bears who contributed to Sunday’s comeback win vs. Seahawks and others who almost prevented it. Our studs and duds:

The Chicago Bears were playing in a winter wonderland for most of the afternoon against the Seattle Seahawks. Snow was coming down at Lumen Field, making for what would have been the perfect backdrop for two NFC teams competing for a playoff spot.

Instead, these teams were hoping to salvage something from a season that unraveled weeks ago.

Seattle controlled the game from nearly start to finish before the Bears miraculously found life. They scored a touchdown in the final minute and gambled with a two-point conversion to take the lead and the win away from the Seahawks.

Led by Nick Foles, starting due to injuries to Justin Fields and Andy Dalton, the Bears came away with their first victory since Thanksgiving and improved to 5-10 on the season.

There were quite a few players who contributed to this victory while some others almost prevented it. Here are this week’s studs and duds.

It looks like Bears rookie Dazz Newsome will make his NFL debut vs. Vikings

Bears rookie WR Dazz Newsome will be called up from the practice squad for tonight’s game against the Vikings. With the Bears shorthanded at receiver, rookie Dazz Newsome will be called up from the practice squad for tonight’s game vs. Vikings.

It will be all hands on deck for the Chicago Bears tonight when they take on the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.

With various players either out due to injury or on the COVID-19 list, the Bears will need all the help they can get. It already appears one reinforcement is on his way up to making his NFL debut.

Rookie wide receiver Dazz Newsome will reportedly be called up from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of tonight’s game, according to his agent Kate Ferrara.

A post on her Instagram page with a graphic saying “Dazz Newsome NFL debut” was accompanied by the “We’ve been ready for this!!! 💯💯 💯💯 Let’s go @dazznewsome!!! It’s only up from here! 🚀🙏🏽🙌🏽 #MNF.”

Newsome was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of North Carolina. In 12 games as a Tar Heel, Newsome caught 54 passes for 684 yards and seven touchdowns on offense during his last season in college. He was billed as a speedy wide receiver who could potentially carve out a role as a returner on special teams.

After a lackluster preseason, however, Newsome was among the team’s final roster cuts and landed on the practice squad. Now, he’ll get a chance to show what he can do, whether it’s on offense or special teams.

With Allen Robinson still on the COVID-19 list and Marquise Goodwin doubtful for the game, the Bears need some help at the receiver position. Newsome will try and show he deserves to stick around for the rest of the season.

Grading the Bears’ 2021 NFL draft class with 4 games left

Here are our grades for all seven players selected by the Bears in the 2021 NFL draft heading into the final month of the season.

Following the 2021 NFL draft, Bears general manager Ryan Pace received glowing reviews for his draft selections. That of course had a lot to do with trading up to draft quarterback Justin Fields, but there were a lot of Day 3 picks that had the potential to be contributors.

We’re nearing the end of the regular season, and the Bears have gotten contributions from some, not all, of their 2021 NFL draft class. Here are our grades for all seven players selected by the Bears in the 2021 NFL draft with four games to go.

Bears waive sixth-round rookies WR Dazz Newsome and CB Thomas Graham Jr.

There have been some surprising cuts by the Bears, including sixth-round rookies WR Dazz Newsome and CB Thomas Graham Jr. being waived.

The Chicago Bears are in the midst of final roster cuts, and there have been some difficult decisions so far. But two of those included two rookies from their 2021 draft class.

According to Brad Biggs and Tom Pelissero, the Bears are waiving a pair of sixth-round rookies — wide receiver Dazz Newsome and cornerback Thomas Graham Jr.

Newsome’s cut was the first real surprise cut given the Bears currently have five wide receivers on the roster, including preseason darling Rodney Adams. Newsome was getting a bulk of the punt returns during preseason, so with Newsome gone and Tarik Cohen still sidelined, there’s a question as to who will be returning punts this season.

Graham was competing for a roster spot in a crowded but question-filled cornerback room, so his cut is certainly surprising given no one has really stepped up this summer.

Assuming both clear waivers, Newsome and Graham would be prime candidates for the Bears’ 16-man practice squad, which can begin forming Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT.
