Nebraska commit Dawson Merritt reveals more commits coming

Dawson Merritt indicated that more commitments are on the way.

Class of 2025 Nebraska football commit Dawson Merritt teased that more commitments may be coming for the program in the near future.

Merritt committed to the Huskers last week in what was a major get for the 2025 class. He is ranked as the 13th overall linebacker and the fourth overall player in the state of Kansas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The addition of Meritt gives the Huskers a dynamic duo at the linebacker position. Merritt and Christian Jones should help solidify the unit for years to come.

However, there may be more playmakers on the way. Merritt put a teaser out for Huskers fans in the interview on Wednesday with Adam Carriker.

“I got two guys in my head, I can’t say their names because I don’t want to ruin their moments. But, I got two guys in my head confirmed that’ll be two huge gets for our recruiting class. I mean they’re great guys and obviously great football players. So, I’m excited for this.”

Several high-profile 2025 targets have been connected with Nebraska over the last week. For instance, four-star wide receiver Cortez Mills was seen rocking Nebraska gear in a workout video earlier this week. Things are heating up on the recruiting trail for the program, even as the on-field product continues to stumble. It will be fun to watch all of this play out, with early signing day just a couple of weeks away.

Huskers land commitment from 4-star edge defender Dawson Merritt

Dawson Merritt committed to the Huskers on Thursday.

Nebraska landed a commitment from class of 2025 edge defender Dawson Merritt on Thursday. The four-star recruit made the announcement on social media.

According to the On3 recruiting rankings, Merritt is the 85th overall player in the 2025 class, the 15th overall edge defender, and the third overall player in his class from the state of Kansas.

Nebraska had been recruiting him for quite a while. He first received an offer from the program on November 7. He has since visited Lincoln several times and will be in town for the Wisconsin Badgers game in the next couple of weeks. He also was able to come to town for the Colorado Buffaloes game back in September.

Merritt initially committed to Alabama on June 26. Nebraska football was initially a major player in his initial recruitment.

Merritt is having a solid season for Blue Valley High School this year. He currently has 58 total tackles in eight games, including 11 tackles for loss, per statistics from MaxPreps.

This commitment certainly adds a tremendous amount of talent to the 2025 recruiting class. The Huskers now have Christian Jones and Merritt as linebackers. This bodes well for the future. The class itself currently ranks 19th overall nationally per the On3 recruiting rankings. Merritt is now the highest-rated commitment in the class.

This is certainly a big recruiting victory, especially with Early Signing Day just a few weeks away. This coaching staff has been able to close the deal on multiple occasions with major recruits, and Thursday’s commitment was just an example.

Alabama loses four-star linebacker commit, flips to Big Ten program

Alabama loses a 2025 commitment for the second consecutive day.

The Alabama Crimson Tide have now lost a commitment from their 2025 recruiting class for what is the second consecutive day, as Dawson Merritt officially flipped to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Thursday night.

Merritt had previously been committed to Alabama since June of 2024, and now joins five-star wide receiver Caleb Cunningham in that conversation, who flipped from the Crimson Tide to the Ole Miss Rebels on Wednesday.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Merritt is considered as the No. 116 overall player in the 2025 class, as well as the No. 13 linebacker in the nation. Merritt is also ranked as the No. 4 player in the state of Kansas where he attends Blue Valley High School.

After the decommitment of Merritt, Alabama’s 2025 class still sits at No. 2 in the nation with 21 total commitments, sitting behind only the Ohio State Buckeyes. Merritt’s decommitment also leaves Alabama with three four-star’s committed in the cycle in Darrell Johnson, Luke Metz, and Abduall Sanders Jr..

Huskers hosting Dawson Merritt for Wisconsin Badgers game

Dawson Merritt is coming back to Lincoln on November 23.

Class of 2025 four-star edge defender Dawson Merritt will be in Lincoln for the Wisconsin Badgers game later this month.

Several On3 experts projected Merritt to go to Nebraska on Tuesday. He originally committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide at the end of June. Despite the commitment, Nebraska has steadily been involved in his recruitment. Now, it appears that they are in a position to land him.

This would be the sixth blue-chip commitment for the 2025 class, which is headlined by linebacker Christian Jones. Merritt and Jones would give the program a solid combination on the defensive side of the ball.

The 2025 class is shaping up nicely. The class ranks 24th overall nationally per the On3 recruiting rankings.

Merritt’s recruitment to Nebraska seems to be gaining momentum. The announcement of the visit and the predictions of a potential commitment are certainly positive developments for the Huskers.

Huskers get predictions for 4-star edge defender Dawson Merritt

Dawson Merritt has now been predicted to flip to Nebraska.

Nebraska football scored three predictions on Tuesday afternoon for 2025 four-star playmaker Dawson Merritt. On3’s Steve Wiltfong, Bryan Munson, and Chad Simmons put in predictions for the edge defender.

According to the On3 recruiting rankings, Merritt is the 14th-ranked edge defender in the 2025 class and the fourth-ranked player in his class from the state of Kansas. He committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide at the end of June but has visited Nebraska since then. He was in Lincoln for the Colorado Buffaloes game on September 7.

He is having another solid season for Blue Valley High School in Kansas. According to statistics from MaxPreps.com, he has 58 tackles in eight games. He has also continued to be a pass-rushing threat, with six sacks on the year, one sack less than his total last year.

The Nebraska football coaching staff visited Merritt in October and seemed very active in his recruitment overall. This would be a big get for the program as they look for a playmaking linebacker for this class. Merritt fits the bill, and flipping him from the Crimson Tide would be a notable feat.

Nebraska continues to make strong push for Alabama commit

The Huskers pursued Dawson Merritt heavily over the summer

It may be the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ bye week, but the coaching staff is not resting. They have sent out a ton of offers this week, and coach Matt Rhule and linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek were on the road on Thursday to check out five-star linebacker Dawson Merritt.

Merritt committed to Alabama on June 26. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, he is the 14th-ranked linebacker in the 2025 class and the fourth-ranked player from the state of Kansas. The linebacker measures six feet three inches and weighs 215 pounds.

Merritt is off to a strong start this season. He has been a cornerstone for the Blue Valley High School defense this season, recording 27 total tackles and a sack in four games this season, according to statistics from Maxpreps.com. He is looking to build from the 2023 campaign that saw him tally 83 tackles and seven sacks on the year.

This staff has been known to flip several players during a recruiting cycle. It will be interesting to see if they can do the same for Merritt, as they were in a tight recruiting battle with Alabama this summer.

Alabama commit Dawson Merritt impressed by Nebraska visit

Dawson Merritt chose Alabama in June.

Nebraska football target and Alabama Crimson Tide commit Dawson Merritt was impressed by the show Nebraska put on during Saturday’s win over the Colorado Buffaloes. Merritt was one of the several big-time visitors who came out to Lincoln.

Merritt chose Alabama over Nebraska at the end of June. Early last week, the linebacker was added to the visit list for last Saturday’s game.

According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the linebacker is the 14th-ranked linebacker in the 2025 class and the best player in his class from the state of Kansas. He visited Nebraska for the Red-White Game on April 26 and kept the Huskers close in his recruitment.

Merritt has four total tackles for Blue Valley High School in Kansas on the season. He was pleased with what he saw from the visit.

“It was crazy inside that place!” he told On3’s Steve Wiltfong (subscription required).

Time will tell if the Huskers will be able to flip Merritt to Lincoln. Nevertheless, it’s clear that the program made a strong impression on him.

Alabama commit to visit Nebraska this weekend

Nebraska is getting a visit from Alabama commit Dawson Merritt

Class of 2025 four-star linebacker Dawson Merritt will be visiting the Huskers for their game on Saturday against the Colorado BuffaloesRivals.com’s Greg Smith confirmed this visit.

The Huskers were in a heated recruiting battle for Merritt until the end of June when he ultimately committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Meritt is the 14th overall linebacker in the 2025 class and the fourth overall player in his class from the state of Kansas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Merritt has visited Nebraska before. He most recently visited Lincoln on June 14. The program officially offered him on November 7.

The linebacker played a big part in Blue Valley High School’s defense last year. The Kansas native recorded 83 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His ability to play all over the field and his athleticism were evident.

According to the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings, the 2025 Nebraska recruiting class is ranked 31st nationally with 18 commitments.

Meritt would be a strong addition to the blackshirts. The Huskers need several athletic linebackers in their 3-3-5 defense, and Meritt would be a solid fit.

Nebraska LB target Dawson Merritt commits to Alabama

One of Nebraska’s top defensive targets committed to Alabama on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Nebraska’s top linebacker target Dawson Merritt, a consensus four-star prospect out of Blue Valley High School in Overland Park, Kansas, officially committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The decision doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as experts around the recruiting industry have been projecting Merritt to land with the Crimson Tide over the last week.

That being said, Merritt was a top target for Matt Rhule and his defensive staff and is a tough hit for the Huskers on the recruiting trail.

Merritt took an official visit to Nebraska in April, but the Crimson Tide had the last say in his recruitment when they hosted him earlier in June for an official visit in Tuscaloosa.

Despite the loss on the recruiting trail, the Huskers are putting together a well-rounded 2025 recruiting class. They currently hold 11 commitments, including notable commitments from quarterback TJ Lateef, running back Jamarion Parker, and defensive lineman Malcolm Simpson.

Alabama lands commitment from 2025 4-star OLB Dawson Merritt

2025 four-star outside linebacker Dawson Merritt committed to Alabama over Nebraska on Wednesday.

The Alabama Crimson Tide football program picked up a commitment from 2025 four-star outside linebacker Dawson Merritt on Wednesday. The Kansas native chose the Crimson Tide over Nebraska.

Merritt took official visits to both Alabama and Nebraska in the month of June. He was a priority target for both programs and the Crimson Tide won out for the blue-chip recruit.

Merritt plays for Blue Valley High School in Overland Park, Kansas. He is listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. At Alabama, Merritt will play the WOLF position. Under Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, this is a position designed for a hybrid linebacker. Meaning Merritt can be used as both a linebacker and edge rusher for the Crimson Tide.

As a junior, Merritt recorded 83 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. He will likely be used in a multitude of ways once he arrives on campus in Tuscaloosa. Merritt is one of the more versatile linebackers in the ’25 recruiting class, much less in Alabama’s recruiting class.

Merritt is the sixth linebacker to commit to the Crimson Tide as a part of the ’25 recruiting class. He joins fellow linebacker commits Luke Metz, Darrell “Duke” Johnson, Jaedon Harmon, Abduall Sanders, and Myles Johnson.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program and its efforts on the recruiting trail.
