Browns rookie OT Dawand Jones dominates Nick Bosa and the 49ers defensive line

Jones, a fourth-round rookie forced into the starting lineup, handled Bosa and the 49ers very well

Losing your starting tackle at the beginning of the season is usually a disaster for the vast majority of NFL teams, but it appears to have been a blessing in disguise for the Cleveland Browns and their rookie fourth-round pick, Dawand Jones.

Anchoring the right side of the league’s best offensive line, Jones has been as consistently dominant as they come for a rookie and his performance is up there with the best tackles across the league. Jones was tested last week in a major upset win over the San Francisco 49ers, where he had to block the likes of Nick Bosa and the other talented members of an elite defensive line.

In the biggest game of his life so far Jones was able to give up zero sacks and just one total pressure on 41 pass blocking snaps. Jones held his own and served it back in the running game as well, helping the Cleveland runners churn up over 150 yards on the ground.

If Dawand Jones can keep up his incredible pace and dominate against elite pass rushers, the sky is truly the limit for the big man out of Ohio State. Not bad for a fourth round draft pick

PFF’s 10 highest-graded Browns’ offensive players vs. 49ers

The offense had some bright spots as they did just enough for the upset

The Cleveland Browns pulled off the upset of the season when they beat the San Francisco 49ers to hand them their first loss of the season on Sunday. The offense was without their starting quarterback and All-Pro left guard Joel Bitonio, not to mention not having Nick Chubb or Jack Conklin. Tight end David Njoku continues to tough out his burns and showed out in this game.

It wasn’t pretty but the offense rallied and were able to complete some big drives to get points in the fourth quarter. Collectively it was the best performance the offensive line has put together this year especially left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. who had a solid game overall.

The most impressive game offensively came from right tackle Dawand Jones who allowed a sack on a miscommunication play but outside of that, he shut down star pass rusher Nick Bosa. Amari Cooper continues to prove he is a clear-cut number-one wide receiver and can produce regardless of who is throwing him the ball.

Here’s a look at the 10 highest-graded offensive players according to PFF.

It was a horrible day for the Browns offense

Without their starting quarterback on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns were horrible offensively. They only managed three points and it took until late in the second half before the team had totaled 100 yards of total offense. Rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson truly looked like a rookie day-three pick as he never looked comfortable.

It was clear from the beginning that the Ravens defense knew they could capitalize on the struggles of the Browns offense line early and often this week. The team has a major problem right now at left tackle that likely won’t have a fix this season without many options out there.

The team couldn’t establish a run game and when they did find some success they often had those plays negated by a penalty. The team will now have the bye week to lick their wounds and figure things out before the 49ers come to town. Here are the top 10 highest-graded offensive players from Sunday according to PFF.

The offense had their best showing on the early season this week

After a really disappointing game last Monday against the Steelers, the Cleveland Browns offense bounced back to score 27 points in the domination of the Tennessee Titans. It was the most complete game that Deshaun Watson has had since he joined the team and it finally gave the fans some hope that he can return to form.

Now he has to be able to stack these games and be good consistently if they really want to compete. But there were some flashes of the magic on Sunday as Watson used his legs to escape trouble several times and find a player to keep the drive going.

This was also a much better game for the offensive line in passing protection than against the Steelers. It wasn’t perfect but this was a step in the right direction and if the offense could complement the defense this team could make the playoffs.

2 Browns named to Touchdown Wire’s ‘Secret Superstars’ of Week 1

Not a secret for much longer.

General manager Andrew Berry and the Cleveland Browns have been pretty spot-on with their middle-round picks over the last two seasons. A year ago, they hit on cornerback Martin Emerson Jr., who immediately became a starter for them as a rookie. This year, offensive tackle Dawand Jones is already taking over the right tackle job after the injury to Jack Conklin and looked good in his NFL regular season debut.

If these two young players can continue to ascend for the Browns, it will make their long-term cap health much healthier (yes, their current spending model is sustainable). And Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire took notice of their Week 1 performance as he has named them both to his weekly Secret Superstars article.

Here is what Touchdown Wire’s Farrar had to say about Jones and Emerson Jr. after their Week 1 performance against the Bengals.

Upon Futher Review: What stood out from the all-22 in Browns vs. Bengals?

What stood out from the all-22 from the Browns and Bengals?

We are now three days removed from the beatdown 24-3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals by the Cleveland Browns. Since then, the all-22 has been released so we can get a better picture of things like quarterback timing, defensive coverages, interior line play, and other things that are not obvious from the broadcast angle.

We will break down what stood out from the all-22 here.

The defensive line has been talked about ad nauseam, so we will refrain from breaking down the obvious: the likes of Myles Garrett, Za’Darius Smith, and Ogbo Okoronkwo were really good, and the Browns found ways to get them all on the field 60 percent of the time.

Here are five things that stood out when taking a second look at the game from the all-22 angle. I also discussed this with The OBR’s Jake Burns in my latest episode of Nothing Rhymes with Orange. The podcast can be found on Apple or Spotify.

Both former Ohio State starting tackles dominate their first game in the NFL

Ohio State rookie OTs Paris Johnson and Dawand Jones each had strong NFL debuts in Week 1

It is not exactly a secret that Ohio State has been a factory for NFL players as of late, with multiple skill players and lineman dominating the league. Two of those Ohio State offensive lineman were drafted this year, after starting opposite each other last season, have now dominated their week one debut on separate teams.

Arizona Cardinals rookie left tackle Paris Johnson and Cleveland Browns newly-minted starting right tackle Dawand Jones both absolutely crushed their first game at the professional level. Both players played against stud defensive lines in the Bengals and the Commanders, but neither rookie was the weak link on lines that were more solid than expected with rookies at the helm of outside protection.

Both Johnson and Jones combined for 58 pass-blocking snaps, neither player gave up a single sack, pressure, hurry, or quarterback hit in their entire game. Both teams also boasted solid running games that both averaged over 4.5 yards a carry. Neither rookie was able to be plucked out of the line and targeted for added pressure or forced to move off the running game.

It is a pleasant surprise especially to see Jones, who was a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, go out there and play to a level people were not expecting. With former starting right tackle Jack Conklin expected to be out for the year, Jones is going to be able to prove he should have been a first-round pick right alongside his teammate in the desert.

5 Takeaways from the Browns’ postgame press conference vs. Bengals

What stood out from the postgame pressers after the Browns beat the Bengals?

There were nothing but smiles in the press conferences after the beatdown of the Cincinnati Bengals by the Cleveland Browns. The rather stoic group showed their pleasure in shutting down their in-state rival. Head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Deshaun Watson, and defensive end Myles Garrett took to the podium after the game. The rest of the team was able to speak to the media in the locker room. Overall, the mood was joyful, but more than a few members of the team were already looking towards Pittsburgh.

The Browns talked about a myriad of topics in their post-game pressers. The players on the team are very insightful. They surprised me when discussing the granular aspects of inclement weather. It was very refreshing to hear their thoughts on the game. Here are my top five takeaways from the Cleveland Browns’ post-game press conferences.

As always, all quotes are sourced from the transcripts provided by the team.

4 Downs: Grant Delpit shines, Deshaun Watson leaves room for more as Browns beat Bengals

The Browns start the season 1-0 for the second straight years. What can we take away from this dominant showing against the Bengals?

The Cleveland Browns have won a Week 1 home opener for the first time since Jeff Garcia was the quarterback in 2004. While it was ugly in a rain-effected duel of lackluster play between Deshaun Watson and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Jim Schwartz made his name known. Myles Garrett, Grant Delpit, and others made a statement in this game against the back-to-back AFC North champs.

The Browns now start the season 1-0 in back-to-back seasons. It was not pretty offensively, but the Browns rode Nick Chubb to the finish line, as he rushed for 106 yards on 18 touches. Defensively, the Browns held the highest-paid professional athlete to just 82 yards on 14-of-31 passing as they sacked him twice as well in this slopfest.

What can we take away from this Week 1 victory today before we celebrate a victory Monday tomorrow? Welcome to the first 4 Downs of the 2023 regular season. It is good to be back.
