Rookie RT Dawand Jones continues strong rookie year for the Browns

The strong rookie campaign continues for Jones

It continues to be a crime that right tackle Dawand Jones was not drafted until the fourth round of last year’s draft when the Cleveland Browns selected him. According to PFF, since Week 9, Jones has played a total of 150 pass-blocking snaps and has allowed just one sack during that time. He has done this while battling injuries that caused him to miss a game and split snaps at times with James Hudson III.

If you think you are going to attack Jones and beat him with power straight to his chest you are sorely wrong. His power and ability to move people around his quarterback once he gets his hands on you it is over. At his size, you would think speed rushers could beat him often but he uses his long arms to control you and just guides you past his quarterback.

Jones continues to need work as a run blocker but he has shown progress of development under Bill Callahan and the sky is the limit for the young tackle.

PFF’s 10 highest-graded Browns’ offensive players vs. Rams

The passing offense looked as good as it has in awhile

It wasn’t enough to get the win as the defense struggled on the road again but the passing offense looked solid in Los Angeles against the Rams on Sunday. The Cleveland Browns passing offense had failed to push the ball vertically in prior weeks but Joe Flacco showed early and often he wasn’t afraid to push the ball down the field.

The running game struggled at times like they have all year but it was promising to see the successful deep shots in the pass game. Elijah Moore had his best game as a Brown as his past relationship with Flacco was evident. The loss of Amari Cooper loomed all game long and you have to wonder how much better they could have been if he hadn’t gotten injured.

Time will tell if the 38-year-old quarterback will remain the starter and productive with his age but Sunday should give fans hope about the direction of the passing offense.

Here are the 10 best performances on the offensive side of the ball according to PFF.

PFF’s 10 highest-graded Browns’ offensive players vs. Broncos

The offense lost all momentum after the rookie went down

It was a slow start for the offense of the Cleveland Browns, but after they settled in rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson played well. He made several throws that showcased the arm talent he has and started to push the ball down the field which he didn’t do during the win over the Steelers. I think that if he hadn’t gotten injured Cleveland should have been able to win.

The run game was going well at times and Jerome Ford continues to grow as a running back and improve as the season has gone on. He runs hard and is decisive though he struggles to locate some of the cut-back lanes and other opportunities for more yardage.

Though they didn’t convert many drives into points overall it was nice to see the rookie grow. But one thing is clear the Browns cannot start P.J. Walker anymore he just isn’t good enough to play quarterback in the NFL which means if DTR can’t go it should be Joe Flacco as the starter.

5 Browns who deserve their first Pro Bowl nod in 2023

Martin Emerson Jr. continues to stand out for the Browns. He and three others deserve their first Pro Bowl nod in 2023.

The big knock on general manager Andrew Berry is that he has never drafted a Pro Bowl player since taking over the post for the Cleveland Browns. That is certainly going to change this season as there are plenty of players who deserve their first opportunity to attend the all-star event. While cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. is the obvious choice, there are a handful of other players in Cleveland who have earned consideration among their peers to be named to the Pro Bowl.

We already know the likes of cornerback Denzel Ward, wide receiver Amari Cooper, guards Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller, and defensive end Myles Garrett are going to get their due. They have name recognition and have been to the Pro Bowl before. The purpose here, however, is to point out some names on the Cleveland roster that deserve to make the trip for the first time.

Here are five players who are proving not only to be cornerstone pieces in Cleveland but deserve to travel to their first-ever Pro Bowl in 2023.

Browns rookie Dawand Jones continues strong season against T.J. Watt

T.J. Watt could do nothing against Dawand Jones

It has been a strong rookie campaign for fourth round rookie right tackle Dawand Jones. He has struggled at times as a run blocker in his first season with the Cleveland Browns, but as a pass protector, he has been as good as it gets. It still amazes me each and every week he is on the field that he fell to the fourth round in April’s draft. The strong rookie campaign got another accomplishment on Sunday when Jones shut down T.J. Watt when he was on the field.

Watt’s sack did not come against Jones who matched up with Watt on a total of 19 pass-blocking snaps. In those 19 snaps, Jones did not allow a single pressure and was only beat on a singular rep.

It is one thing when you are dominant on random players but when you go against the league’s best and don’t blink you deserve praise and respect. Jones will go down as one of the biggest draft steals with a long career ahead of him.

Browns Injury Report: Juan Thornhill out, Dawand Jones questionable vs. Steelers

As the Browns look to make it five of their last six against the Steelers, they will be without Juan Thornhill and Marquise Goodwin

After starting the week with some uncertainty, the Cleveland Browns enter their matchup looking fairly healthy outside of the devastating loss of quarterback Deshaun Watson. In this game, only wide receiver Marquise Goodwin and safety Juan Thornhill have been ruled out against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite being listed as questionable, standout rookie offensive tackle Dawand Jones has stated he is good to go on Sunday.

Despite Michael Dunn returning from Injured Reserve, the Browns will start Geron Christian at left tackle once again, meaning Joel Bitonio will not kick out as he has done once before. If Jones suffers a setback before gametime, the Browns will start James Hudson III at right tackle in his absence again.

The Browns have released their final injury report as their preparation for the Steelers is complete, with just a total of four players on Friday’s edition. Here are the only players to appear on Friday’s report.

Browns Injury Report: Denzel Ward returns to practice, Dawand Jones remains out Wednesday

The Browns get set to take on the Steelers shorthanded at QB and at RT with Dawand Jones. However, Denzel Ward returned to practice.

The Cleveland Browns got some devastating injury news on Wednesday, as it was announced that quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss the rest of the season with a broken shoulder. That is not the only concern with the Steelers on deck as right tackle Dawand Jones remains sidelined. On a bright note, however, cornerback Denzel Ward was a limited participant in practice as the Browns get set to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers despite leaving the game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Ward is not the only player to show up on the injury list, however, as there is a laundry list from Wednesday’s practice. A handful of players were resting on the first day of practice this week, so a bit of sifting through the names has to be done.

Here is the long list of players who did not practice or practiced on a limited basis as the Browns look to advance to 7-3 on the season against the Steelers on Sunday with an opportunity to take hold of the top spot in the AFC North.

Browns inactives: CB Greg Newsome active vs. Ravens

The Browns slot corner will be back vs Baltimore

The Cleveland Browns have announced their inactives list against the Baltimore Ravens, as they look for revenge for the loss in Cleveland back in October.

The Browns will be without three of their best offensive tackles, which is not good going against a defense that leads the league in sacks. It will be a big test for Deshaun Watson, as this is his chance to prove he is still an elite franchise quarterback.

The team will also be down two wide receivers in Marquise Goodwin and David Bell, where Austin Watkins Jr. was called up from the practice squad to cover for injuries. The Browns’ defense will need to step up against an offense that is killing teams running the football. This has all the makings of a statement game for Cleveland.

The inactives for today are as follows:

  • QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
  • S Ronnie Hickman
  • DE Isaiah McGuire
  • DT Siaki Ika
  • OT Dawand Jones
  • WR Marquise Goodwin
  • WR David Bell

The Browns and Ravens kick things off at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.

Browns will be without their top three offensive tackles vs. Ravens

The depth at tackle will really be tested on Sunday

Already without right tackle Jack Conklin for the rest of the season, Cleveland placed left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. on IR this week. Rookie Dawand Jones, who had been playing well at right tackle, has now been ruled out for Sunday’s showdown against the Ravens.

The Brownso are going against one of the best defenses and pass rushes in Baltimore, needing a big win and hopefully stealing it on the road. That leaves James Hudson III and multiple other players who have been added via practice squads, with not many high-end players left to step in.

Hudson struggled mightily in camp, as well as the preseason, and the idea of him starting at left tackle doesn’t elicit much confidence. But an idea tossed out on social media by the OBR’s Andrew Spayde makes a ton of sense to me.

He suggested that Cleveland could move left guard Joel Bitonio to left tackle, put rookie Luke Wypler at left guard, and have Hudson at right tackle. Bitonio has made it clear in the past that he didn’t want a permanent move to left tackle but has played a couple of games as a left tackle when the team was in a bind – something he could do again.

Luke Wypler played decent at left guard in the preseason and when Hudson III played well in meaningful games it was at right tackle. Bitonio played two games at left tackle in 2021 and received overall grades of 91.5 and 82.6 from PFF, so this could be the best option for the Browns.

Browns to face Ravens pass rush without their top 3 offensive tackles in Week 10

The Cleveland Browns will be without offensive tackles Jack Conklin, Jedrick Wills, and Dawand Jones in Week 10 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens

The Browns are headed to M&T Bank Stadium for a massive Week 10 matchup against the Ravens, and Cleveland will be without their top three offensive tackles.

Cleveland was already without Wills Jr., their starting left tackle, for at least four weeks with an MCL sprain. Still, things became urgent when starting right tackle Dawand Jones sat out a second consecutive practice with a knee and shoulder injury.

James Hudson III will move to the right side with Jones out, and the only other two healthy tackles on the active roster are Geron Christian and Leroy Watson IV – two practice squad call-ups. Alex Leatherwood and Justin Murray are available off the practice squad if needed.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski even added that left guard Joel Bitonio could switch to left tackle if needed – Bitonio played 123 snaps at left tackle in 2021 when Wills had COVID-19.
