NFL suspends Browns WR Davion Davis for 2 games

Davis is being suspended for a DUI incident from 2019 when he played for the Minnesota Vikings

The NFL announced some unfortunate news for one of the Cleveland Browns battling on the team’s roster bubble. Wide receiver Davion Davis has been suspended by the league for the first two weeks of the 2021 regular season.

The suspension results from a DUI David committed in 2019 while he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings. Those charges were later reduced to reckless operations, per NFL.com’s Tom Pellissero.

Davis has played well throughout training camp and made impressive catches in each of the Browns’ preseason games. He was facing an uphill battle to crack the final roster in a deep wide receiving corps, and being unavailable for the first two weeks does not help Davis’ case with Cleveland — or other teams who might be interested in picking up the 24-year-old speedster.

Browns sign WR Davion Davis

The Browns added a receiver familiar with Kevin Stefanski to replace Derrick Willies.

The Cleveland Browns lost Derrick Willies from their 90-man camp roster yesterday but today filled that spot with another receiver. Former Minnesota Vikings receiver Davion Davis was added to the team according to multiple reports.

Davis is familiar with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski from their time together during Davis’ rookie year with the Vikings in 2019. Davis measures in at 5’11” and just under 200 pounds. He spent the 2019 season up and down from the Vikings practice squad and main roster but did not record a catch.

Late last year, Davis was convicted of a misdemeanor for careless driving, related to alcohol, from a charge in 2019.

His familiarity with Stefanski likely played a role in his addition. With a lot of talented players at the position, it is unlikely that Davis will make the final 53-man roster but could fight for a practice squad position. With Odell Beckham Jr. coming back from injury, the Browns need extra receivers throughout training camp.

Browns sign spring league star WR Davion Davis

The Cleveland Browns added another interesting offensive piece in The Spring League star, Davion Davis.

The Cleveland Browns have made a ton of big-time additions this off-season, but general manager Andrew Berry deserves credit for looking under every rock for available talent. Cleveland added another intriguing bottom of the roster piece in The Spring League star, Davion Davis.

Fans of the Browns Wire may find that name familiar as Davis was noted as a top prospect for the 2019 NFL Draft in a pre-season piece, but the former Sam Houston State play-maker went undrafted in 2019 as spent that season with the Minnesota Vikings.

In addition to being an All-American receiver, Davis was also an elite returner in college. Unfortunately, he clocked in the 4.6 range at his pro day helping lead to him going undrafted. Despite running a poor 40, Davis has the speed and elusiveness to play a role in the NFL, but his lack of technique when running routes is what really held him back.

Davis tallied 14 receptions for 223 yards and two touchdowns in The Spring League for the Blues and he really looks like a more refined route runner and also looks to have added more muscle and likely weighs over 205 pounds, which is a big deal considering how small he was listed in college at 5’11” and 191 pounds. Davis is not a future All-Pro player, but he brings enough to the table to warrant a serious look and should land a roster spot.

Vikings sign 7 to future contracts

A day after their season ended, the Vikings announced they have signed seven players to future/reserve contracts.

A day after their season ended, the Vikings announced they have signed seven players to future/reserve contracts.

Those players include:

  • RB, Tony Brooks-James
  • QB, Jake Browning
  • WR, Davion Davis
  • TE, Brandon Dillon
  • CB, Mark Fields
  • CB, Kemon Hall
  • CB, Marcus Sayles

Most of those names probably sound familiar since all but Sayles finished the season on the Vikings’ practice squad.

Sayles, meanwhile, played the last two seasons in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Sayles initially entered the NFL in 2017 with the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of West Georgia.

In two seasons at West Georgia, Sayles had 136 tackles, six interceptions, five forced fumbles and two sacks.

Vikings place C Brett Jones on IR, sign T Aviante Collins from practice squad

Jones suffered a knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

The Vikings have place center Brett Jones on the injured reserve with a knee injury.

In a corresponding move, the team signed tackle Aviante Collings to the active roster from the practice squad. The team also signed wide receiver Davion Davis to the practice squad after releasing him on Tuesday.

With the Titans signing fullback Khare Blasingame from the Vikings practice squad yesterday, Minnesota’s practice squad is at 10.

It’s somewhat ironic that Collins is replacing Jones on the active roster considering Collins suffured a similar type of MCL injury that Jones is currently hurt with.

“Sometimes blessings come with bad things,” Collins said via Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune. “Losing Jones, I know what he’s going through right now. He supported me when I was hurt, we’ll be here to support him.”

It will be interesting to see if the Vikings activate wide receiver Josh Doctson (hamstring) from the injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

Titans sign FB Khari Blasingame from Vikings practice squad

If you recall, Blasingame was competing with C.J. Ham to make the team through training camp and preseason.

Fullback Khari Blasingame is no longer a Minnesota Viking.

On Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans signed Blasingame to their 53-man roster form the Vikings practice squad.

If you recall, Blasingame was competing with C.J. Ham to make the team through training camp and preseason.

Blasingame orginally signed with the Vikings this offseason after going undrafted out of Vanderbilt.

The Vikings practice squad now sits at nine players. Wide receiver Davion Davis, who the Vikings released on Tuesday, is expected to be brought back.

The Vikings released wide receiver Davion Davis on Tuesday.

Davis was an undrafted free agent who has spent time going back and forth between the team’s active roster and practice squad.

If I had to guess, the Vikings will probably try to get Davis back on their practice squad.

The Vikings have not made a corresponding roster move, but Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press notes that it could be for Josh Doctson, who is eligible to return from the IR with a hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Adam Thielen (hamstring) missed Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. It feels like a good bet the Vikings would rest him in Week 11 with the team having its bye in Week 12.
