Commanders sign WR Damiere Byrd

The Commanders sign a WR with ties to Kliff Kingsbury.

The Commanders signed a veteran wide receiver on Wednesday.

After working out some receivers on Wednesday, the Commanders determined that they would be signing Damiere Byrd, per Tom Pelissero.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound veteran played his college ball at South Carolina and was undrafted. He was signed first by Ron Rivera and the Carolina Panthers.

Three seasons in Carolina (2016-18) resulted in 12 receptions for 129 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Why did the Commanders go with Byrd? A very logical explanation may be that Byrd has playing experience under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. In 2019, Byrd spent one season with the Cardinals and Kingsbury. He was on the receiving end of 32 passes for 359 yards and one touchdown.

2020 Byrd enjoyed career highs when he caught 47 passes for 604 receiving yards playing for the New England Patriots.

Byrd caught 26 passes for 329 yards in 2021 for the Chicago Bears before moving again, this time to the Atlanta Falcons for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. 13 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns came in the first season in Atlanta, but only two targets (no receptions) came in his lone game last season.

Here are some big plays receiving and returning by Byrd.

The eight-year veteran turned age 31 in January and is hoping to make the Commanders his sixth NFL team. He will be in a battle with Kazmeir Allen, Dyami Brown, Jamison Crowder, Davion Davis, Dax Milne, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Mitchell Tinsley, Brycen Tremayne and Olamide Zaccheaus for roster spots.

The Commanders really need a few of these receivers to step up this offseason and preseason, as only Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Luke McCaffrey are sure bets to be on the 53-man roster.

8 former Vikings getting another shot in the XFL

The XFL returns on Saturday and there are multiple former Vikings that will be suiting up

One of the best parts of football in the 21st century is that it doesn’t end with the Super Bowl. The National Football League has done a such a great job making football a year-round thing that we now have two spring leagues.

The first one is the relaunch of the XFL which has their kickoff game on Saturday between the Las Vegas Vipers and Arlington Renegades — it’ll be broadcast nationally on ABC, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.

For Minnesota Vikings fans, they will have eight different Vikings that are playing in the XFL across five different teams. Here is the full list:

WR Davion Davis (waived, injured) could help Browns when healthy

Now a free agent, the Browns leading receiver in preseason last year could help the team once he’s healthy:

The Cleveland Browns receiving corps will likely be a source of concern all year for fans. Outside of Amari Cooper and Donovon People-Jones, the Browns lack a lot of certainty with their group.

David Bell could take an important role but the rookie had missed most of training camp with a foot injury. Jakeem Grant could have been an interesting slot receiver and gadget player but was lost for the year.

Anthony Schwartz dropped two passes in the team’s opening preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Even the team’s other two rookies, Michael Woods II and Isaiah Weston, have dealt with injuries including Weston now out for the year.

A former Cleveland receiver just became a free agent:

While there is no certainty that Davis’ hamstring will be healthy soon, he was impressive in training camp last year for the Browns. He also showed some flashes during Houston’s training camp this year:

… Davion Davis and Johnny Johnson III are taking advantage of the opportunities during practice. For the second day in a row, both Davis and Johnson made a pair of impressive catches during seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills.

Once healthy, Davis knows the Cleveland offense and could help right away. Last year, Davis led the Browns in receiving yards in the first two preseason games and had five receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown in the other.

With very few other options, perhaps a healthy Davis rides in to help provide quality depth behind Cooper and Peoples-Jones.

Texans make WR Chester Rogers signing official among 4 transactions

The Houston Texans processed the Chester Rogers signing among their four total roster moves.

The Houston Texans processed the signing of receiver Chester Rogers Wednesday. The former Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans wideout is now a member of the club’s 90-man roster.

As a corresponding move, the Texans waive-injured receiver Davion Davis. The former Hutto High School and Sam Houston State product was originally signed off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad last October and made it until December when he was placed on injured reserve. Davis caught a pass for 17 yards in his two games for Houston, one of which he started.

The Texans also allowed defensive back Tristin McCollum to rejoin the active roster. McCollum passed his physical and is no longer on the physically unable to perform list.

Houston also signed long snapper Harrison Elliott, who will provide some relief for Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Weeks.

Report: Texans to re-sign C Jimmy Morrissey, WR Davion Davis

The Houston Texans intend to re-sign center Jimmy Morrissey and receiver Davion Davis when the new league year and free agency begins.

The Houston Texans liked what they saw from youngsters at the bottom of the roster and want to give them another shot to progress with the organization in 2022.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network, the Texans intend to re-sign center Jimmy Morrissey and receiver Davion Davis once the new league year starts at 3:00 p.m. Central Time on March 16.

Morrissey was active for five games in 2021 with four starts. Morrissey played 258 snaps on offense and six special teams snaps. Houston signed the former 2021 seventh-round pick off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad in mid-October as starter Justin Britt battled with a knee injury.

Davis was active for two games, starting in one of them. The former Sam Houston State and Hutto High School product caught a pass for 17 yards. Davis saw 21 snaps on offense and five on special teams.

Texans WR Davion Davis done for the season with broken leg

Houston Texans receiver Davion Davis is finished for 2021 as he sustained a fractured leg in the 33-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans wide receiver Davion Davis is out for the remainder of the season due to a fractured lower left leg, coach David Culley announced on Monday.

During the first quarter of the Texans’ 33-13 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, Davis sustained the injury after completing a 17-yard reception from rookie quarterback Davis Mills.

In October, Davis signed with the Texans’ practice squad following a short stint with the Cleveland Browns. He remained inactive until Danny Amendola went down with a knee injury during the Texans’ 21-14 loss to the New York Jets.

Davis made his debut with the Texans during a 31-0 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, where he missed a pair of Tyrod Taylor’s targets. According to Culley, wideout Phillip Dorsett II will replace Davis on Sunday, when the Texans square off against the 2-11 Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field.

Texans WR Davion Davis questionable with ankle injury

Houston Texans receiver Davion Davis is questionable to return against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans wide receiver Davion Davis sustained an ankle injury during the first quarter of Sunday’s Week 14 match against the Seattle Seahawks. His return is questionable.

Davis went down with the injury after completing a 13-yard reception from rookie quarterback Davis Mills. The drive ended in Mills finding tight end Brevin Jordan for a Texans’ 7-0 lead.

Davis joined the Texans in October following a short stint with the Cleveland Browns. He was on the Texans’ practice squad until Danny Amendola went down with a knee injury during the Texans’ 21-14 loss to the New York jets.

He made his debut with the Texans during a 31-0 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. In the loss, Davis missed a pair of targets thrown his way by Tyrod Taylor.

Texans sign WR Davion Davis off Browns practice squad

With a quality roster, not surprising a team would pluck one of the Browns practice squad guys. Interesting that the Texans didn’t claim him two weeks ago:

As has been discussed, the Cleveland Browns roster will likely be in a state of constant flux throughout the 2021 NFL season. General manager Andrew Berry is always on the lookout for ways to improve his roster and give his team as many advantages as possible.

For example, the Browns added a big receiver to their practice squad this week, perhaps to help prepare them for facing Los Angeles Chargers 6’4″ receiver Mike Williams.

A problem for Cleveland is that other team’s general managers are doing the same thing. With the Browns quality roster and winning record, other teams will continue to monitor Cleveland’s moves and available players.

One such move just took place as the Houston Texans signed wide receiver Davion Davis off the Browns practice squad. Davis was a free agent most of the offseason before being scooped up by Berry. He had to serve a two-game suspension to start the season, then the team waived him before bringing him back to the practice squad.

With the Texans adding him to their roster this week, it is a slight surprise that they (or another team) didn’t just claim Davis when the Browns waived him. Davis did have a choice whether to sign with the Texans or stay on the Cleveland practice squad and took the chance to make an impact on their 53-man roster.

WR Davion Davis clears waivers, signs with Browns practice squad

A day after being waived, the Browns are reportedly bringing back Davis to their practice squad after an exciting preseason:

The Cleveland Browns will continue to move pieces around near the bottom of their roster. Sometimes need will lead to a player being added to either the 53-man roster or the practice squad while other times Andrew Berry and company will just be looking to add someone with talent no matter the position.

On Monday, the Browns waived wide receiver Davion Davis instead of activating him from the suspension list. Davis missed the first two weeks of the season with suspension but had given fans some excitement in the preseason. Targetted 18 times, Davis caught 12 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Perhaps his most exciting catch was this touchdown jump ball against the Jacksonville Jaguars:

Fans wondered if Davis would be kept as the team’s sixth receiver when reinstated and once Jarvis Landry went down with injury assumed he would be added to the 53-man roster.

Instead, as we reported earlier Tuesday, Landry was placed on injured reserve but Ifeadi Odenigbo was signed to the active roster.

Later Tuesday afternoon came a report that Davis had cleared waivers and was signing to the Cleveland practice squad:

The Browns could allow Davis to get ready to play for a week or so before promoting him to the active roster. Currently, the team only has four healthy receivers including Odell Beckham Jr. returning from injury. Davis could also be called up to play off of the practice squad if Cleveland deems him ready to go.

Monday Browns roster and injury updates

The day after a win, the Browns made a few moves and updates on major injury concerns (Landry, Wills):

The Cleveland Browns fought off the fight of the Houston Texans for a victory in Week 2 evening their record to 1 – 1 on the young season. While the first week of the year didn’t go their way, the second week was a battle of attrition as injuries popped up all over the field.

The Browns look to host the Chicago Bears in Week 3 with the visitors struggling through a quarterback conundrum. From the outside looking in, rookie Justin Fields should already be starting but Matt Nagy has stuck with Andy Dalton. It was reiterated today that Dalton is the Bears starter if he is healthy. He may not be for Week 3 but that will be decided later in the week.

For Cleveland, health is also a concern with two starters going out of Sunday’s win. On Monday, a few roster moves were made and we got some injury updates as well. Catching up on all of those here:
