Ravens protect four practice squad players ahead of Week 5

The Ravens protected four practice squad players ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the Colts

The Baltimore Ravens have relied on some of their practice squad players to make a big impact for them throughout the course of the 2021 season so far. With all of the injuries that the team has gone through, they’ve needed to take multiple different approaches to make up for some of the production that they’ve lost from many of their key contributors.

On Tuesday, the Ravens protected four players on their practice squad according to the NFL’s personnel notice. Those players are quarterback Trace McSorley, running back Le’Veon Bell, offensive tackle David Sharpe, and  defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie.

Bell was called up from the practice squad last week and carried the ball four times for 11 yards against the Denver Broncos. McKenzie was called up against the Detroit Lions and played snaps with much of Baltimore’s front seven unavailable. Sharpe could get elevated for offensive tackle depth, while McSorley is unlikely to get on the active roster unless there’s an injury to Lamar Jackson or Tyler Huntley.

Ravens protect four practice squad players ahead of Week 3

The Ravens protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 3 game against the Lions

The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up to take on the Detroit Lions in Week 3 of the 2021 season. If Baltimore takes Detroit seriously and is at the top of their game, it could be an easy win for the Ravens. However, they’ll have to make sure they don’t underestimate the Lions, as if they do it could set up to be a trap game.

On Tuesday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that Baltimore has protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 3 matchup with Detroit in quarterback Trace McSorley, running back Le’Veon Bell, offensive tackle David Sharpe and inside linebacker Josh Bynes.

The Ravens’ practice squad protections for Week 3 look very similar to Week 2, where they protected McSorley, Bell, and Bynes along with offensive lineman Andre Smith. Baltimore currently has four offensive tackles on their practice squad, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Smith or fellow tackle Adrian Ealy promoted to the active roster in the coming days.

Ravens announce four practice squad roster moves

The Ravens announced four practice squad roster moves on Tuesday mostly relating to the offensive line

The Baltimore Ravens have been dealing with a massive amount of injuries to their team so far during the 2021 season. Baltimore has shuffled their roster around multiple times per week, which is the result of having so many players hurt.

On Tuesday, the Ravens announced that they made four practice squad roster moves, mostly centered around their offensive line. They signed offensive tackles David Sharpe and Jaryd Jones-Smith to their practice squad for depth along their line, and in corresponding moves released both offensive lineman Foster Sarell and inside linebacker Blake Gallagher.

Sharpe was a fourth-round pick of the then-Oakland Raiders back in 2017. He most recently spent time with the Washington Football Team. Jones-Smith has bounced around football after going undrafted during the 2018 draft, even spending time in the American Alliance of Football before the league folded.

Sarell and Gallagher both signed with Baltimore as 2021 undrafted free agents. Sarell was with the team for all of training camp before being released, while Gallagher was let go before the preseason began.

Sharpe and Jones-Smith join fellow offensive tackles Andre Smith and Adrian Ealy on the Ravens’ practice squad, meaning that the team currently has four tackles there. That could mean a number of things, including that Ronnie Stanley might not be close to 100% at the moment.

Ravens bring in two offensive tackles for tryouts

The Baltimore Ravens brought in two offensive tackles for tryouts on Friday

The Baltimore Ravens are already having to shuffle around their offensive line around a bit so far during the 2021 season. With Tyre Phillips being placed on injured reserve and Ronnie Stanley uncertain for Week 2 as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, Baltimore’s offensive line is in a bit of a tough situation right now, especially as they continue to get acclimated with each other on the field.

The team is seemingly weighing all of their options as they look to work through their injuries on their line. On Friday, the Ravens brought in two offensive tackles for workouts in Jaryd Jones-Smith and David Sharpe.

Jones-Smith signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has bounced around the NFL ever since, even spending some time in the Alliance of American Football before the league folded. Sharpe was a fourth-round pick of the then-Oakland Raiders back in 2017, but was cut after just one season with the team. He most recently spent time with the Washington Football Team.

Brandon Scherff and David Sharpe placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

Washington now has six players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Earlier this week, Washington head coach Ron Rivera voiced his concerns on the team’s low COVID-19 vaccination rate and saw four players added to the reserve/COVID-19 list.

On Saturday’s final practice in Richmond before heading back to Ashburn, Washington added two more to the list: right guard Brandon Scherff and offensive tackle David Sharpe.

Scherff and Sharpe join wide receiver Curtis Samuel, defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas and defensive back Chris Miller on the list.

Rivera spoke after practice and said some players were set up to get the vaccine on Sunday.

Washington already has more player’s on the reserve/COVID-19 list this week than it had last season before vaccinations were available.

It’s easy to understand Rivera’s frustration because it could put Washington at a disadvantage on game days if this happens during the season.

Washington re-signs both RB Lamar Miller and OT David Sharpe

Washington brought back two players on Wednesday morning, signing RB Lamar Miller and OT David Sharpe to one-year contracts that add depth.

After bringing in two big-name free agents in both Ryan Fitzpatrick and William Jackson III on Monday and Tuesday, the Washington Football Team kicked the day off on Wednesday with a couple of small re-signings that will keep solid depth on their roster.

Washington brought back RB Lamar Miller and OT David Sharpe, both on one-year deals for the 2021 season.

Miller was a late addition to the roster in 2020, added for depth while rookie Antonio Gibson was sidelined with a turf toe injury, and he never saw the field during the game. However, with Peyton Barber likely gone this offseason, Miller can now occupy that RB3 role behind Gibson and J.D. McKissic.

As for Sharpe, he played sparingly in 2020, starting just 2 of the 10 games he played in and accounting for 17% of those snaps. However, Washington did trade a late-round pick from Sharpe last season to bring him in from the Las Vegas Raiders, so it makes sense that they would be interested in keeping him on the roster.

Washington’s offensive line deserves a ton of credit for adapting on the fly

With a makeshift group of players settling into unfamiliar positions, Washington O-line has strung together several really nice performances as of late.

If you take into account the injuries suffered on the offensive line, plus the loss of both Trent Williams and Ereck Flowers this offseason, it would be extremely easy for the front-five in Washington to pack things up and make a litany of excuses for why they aren’t getting the job done.

However, through 10 games this season, they’ve been doing anything but that, instead adapting to the current circumstances and finding a way to string together a few nice games that have allowed QB Alex Smith some time to work in the pocket.

After Sunday’s win against the Cincinnati Bengals, the offensive line deserves a lot of credit for what they were able to accomplish. With both Geron Christian and Cornelius Lucas unable to play, veteran right tackle Morgan Moses shifted over to the left tackle position, and backup LT started at the RT position. It was a make-shift plan that had a high probability of not working.

It worked pretty well.

Alex Smith was sacked once and pressured only four times. He was given time to stand in the pocket and make his reads downfield, getting the ball to seven different receivers. Not all of the credit goes to the tackles on the outside, though. After the game, coach Ron Rivera offered a lot of praise to his guys in the middle, RG Brandon Scherff and LG Wes Schweitzer, who had stand-out games as well.

The offensive line rarely gets a lot of credit when things go right, and regularly shoulders much of the blame when things go wrong. From a birds-eye view, things are going wrong more often than not in Washington, but for the first time in a while, you can’t pin all of the blame on the O-line. Instead, they’ve been a very solid unit that is performing above expectations through 10 weeks, and though they lost two star players, plus an offensive line coach who is regarded as one of the best in the business in Bill Callahan, they’ve been able to put together several nice games, and give this offense a chance to succeed.

Raiders could lose 6th-round pick gained from trade with Washington for LT David Sharpe

Washington traded a 6th-round pick for LT David Sharpe this year, which now might be taken from the Raiders for lack of COVID-19 compliance.

The Washington Football Team made a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this season for LT David Sharpe, looking to boost the depth of their offensive line ahead of the season. Now, because of the Raider’s lack of compliance with the COVID-19 guidelines, they have been hit with a massive fine and loss of a sixth-round draft pick in 2021.

The Raiders have two 6th-round picks, one from Washington, and one of their own, but according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, they will lose whichever pick is higher by the time the 2020 season is said and done, which will be determined by who finishes with a better record.

Since trading a sixth-round pick for him, Washington has played Sharpe a total of nine snaps this season, instead going with Geron Christian and Cornelius Lucas at the position.

Washington trades 2021 sixth-round pick for OT David Sharpe

Washington traded a 2021 sixth-round pick for OT David Sharpe, and they will get a 2021 7th-round pick in return.

It looks like the Washington Football Team is seeking some help at the tackle position, as news has broken that they are trading a future draft pick for Davide Sharpe, formerly with the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Washington will be giving up a 2021 sixth-round pick for Sharpe, and will be getting a 2021 7th-round pick in return.

Sharpe is a 6-foot-6, 330 pound tackle who has played in the NFL since 2017, appearing in 24 games. He will instantly have a chance to win the starting left tackle position in Washington, competing with Geron Christian, Cornelius Lucas, and Saahdiq Charles, who was drafted this past season. With roster cuts coming this weekend, Sharpe will have to make his presence felt quickly if he wishes to stick around for long, but the fact that Washington would trade a future asset for him alludes to the fact that they like what they are getting in return.

1 pending free agent Dolphins should target from each AFC West team

The 2020 NFL free agency window is quickly closing in —  here’s one player from each AFC West team for the Dolphins to look at.

The Miami Dolphins are all set to enter 2020 free agency next month and continue the team’s ambitious plan to completely overhaul the roster. Yes, this team’s primary objective appears to be to build through the draft. But the Dolphins will have a mass surplus of cap space at their disposal and the environment in South Florida is one filled with optimism after the Dolphins finished 5-4 over their final nine games.

Looking across the NFL landscape, there’s a ton of potential contributors set to hit the market. Here’s one pending free agent from each team in the AFC West that the Dolphins should consider:

Kansas City Chiefs – Defensive Lineman Chris Jones

Chris Jones is one of the top agents on the market. He’s been compared by some to Fletcher Cox and he’s a stalwart against both the run and the pass. There’s no issue finding a logical fit for Jones — he’s got the length to two gap as needed on the interior and if tasked with playing a penetration role, he’ll find success there — too.

The downside to targeting Jones is, in a scenario where he hits the open market, he’s going to probably command $20M plus per year. Jones will turn 26 years old this offseason — he’d be worth the price of admission and figures to have plenty of elite football ahead of him.

But signing in Miami would mean the Dolphins are willing to ink a mega-contract after forsaking their old habits — and that the Chiefs are willing to let him hit the market in the first place.
