The Seahawks continue to do their due diligence on the 2022 quarterback class. Seattle’s quarterbacks coach Dave Canales has been making the rounds to watch the top QB prospects throw at their pro days recently, including Malik Willis at Liberty and Kenny Pickett at Pitt.

Add another one to the list. Today Canales is on hand at North Carolina to watch Sam Howell.

Howell (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) totaled 92 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions in college, averaging 9.2 yards per attempt and completing 63.8% of his throws.

Here’s a look at his UNC highlight reel.

Seahawks QBs coach present for strong pro day showing by Malik Willis

The Seahawks sent a lower-profile contingent to watch Willis.

Normally, when an NFL team really likes a QB prospect, they send their heavy hitters to watch them throw at their pro day. For example, the Panthers and the Steelers sent their head coaches and their general managers to watch Liberty’s Malik Willis throw today.

The Seahawks sent a lower-profile contingent to watch Willis, though. Quarterbacks coach Dave Canales and scout Todd Brunner were spotted.

Canales was also present for yesterday’s pro day for Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, who’s now ranked the No. 2 QB prospect in this class by Draft Wire.

This could just be the normal subterfuge teams engage in during draft season, but the buzz (meaningless though it may be) is the Seahawks aren’t looking to use their No. 9 overall pick on a quarterback.

For what it’s worth, Willis earned great reviews for his performance today.

There’s a good chance Willis won’t be there at No. 9 overall, anyway – especially given how desperate Carolina is for a franchise QB.

A lot can happen between now and draft night, but our best guess at the moment is the Seahawks will roll with either Geno Smith or Drew Lock at quarterback and target either an offensive tackle or a boundary cornerback to replace D.J. Reed in round one.

Seahawks announce coaching staff changes for 2020 NFL season

The Seattle Seahawks have made a number of changes to their coaching staff ahead of the start of the 2020 NFL season.

The Seattle Seahawks have made a number of changes to their coaching staff ahead of the start of the 2020 NFL season.

Quarterbacks coach, Dave Canales, has been promoted to the title of passing game coordinator and offensive assistant Austin Davis, quarterback Russell Wilson’s backup in 2017, will now serve as the team’s QB coach.

Brennan Carroll, most recently the offensive scheme specialist/assistant offensive line coach, will now be the Seahawks’ run game coordinator.

Secondary coach Nick Sorensen will add nickel specialist to his current duties and former Seattle linebacker Aaron Curry has been promoted to a full-time role as a defensive assistant.

The Seahawks also announced three new members have joined the staff – Sanjay Lal as the senior offensive assistant, Keli’i Kekuewa as an offensive assistant, and Damione Lewis as a defensive assistant.

Finally, former Seahawks offensive lineman, Steve Hutchinson, has been given the role of football consultant on the personnel side of Seattle’s operations.

Assistant defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, who spent the last two years on the staff, will not be returning for the 2020 season.

Austin Davis set to become NFL’s youngest quarterbacks coach

The Seattle Seahawks promoted Dave Canales to pass-game coordinator and Austin Davis to QBs coach, making him the youngest in the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks are making some personnel changes on the offensive side of the ball, promoting Dave Canales from quarterbacks coach to pass-game coordinator and Austin Davis from offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach.

With the promotion, Davis becomes the youngest quarterbacks coach in the NFL, having served as quarterback Russell Wilson’s backup as recently as 2017. Davis is six months younger than Wilson.

In addition to reporting the changes, NFL Insider Albert Breer also reported that Davis was drawing interest from other teams, part of what prompted coach Pete Carroll to hand him a promotion.

Davis, 31 in June, played in parts of four NFL seasons between 2012 and 2017. He appeared in 16 games, starting 10, and completed 236 passes on 378 attempts with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

He was released by the Giants in February of 2019 and caught on as an offensive assistant with Seattle, evidently impressing enough to get promoted after just one season.

Canales has been with the Seahawks since 2010, spending one year as an administrative assistant at USC with coach Carroll in 2009 before joining him in Seattle.
