17 days till the Cardinals’ season opener against the Bills

There hasn’t been even a decent No. 17 on the Cardinals in a long time.

The Arizona Cardinals are three days away from their final preseason game. They are five days away from final cutdown day, when they must reduce the roster to 53 players.

And until they take the field on September 8 at Highmark Stadium on the road against the Buffalo Bills, they are 17 days away.

Receiver Dan Chisena currently wears No. 17. He probably will not make the roster. He has not yet made any real impact on the team.

In fact. No. 17 has been a dud of a number for some time. The most important player to wear it was quarterback Jim Hart. He played for the Cardinals from 1967-1983.

But the last guy to really have any sort of impact was quarterback Dave Brown, who was the Cardinals’ backup quarterback from 1998-2001 while Jake Plummer was the guy.

Brown was 3-4 in seven games as a starter.

He wasn’t a great No. 17 but he was the last guy to have any sort of reasonable impact with No. 17.

The countdown continues tomorrow.

NFL supplemental draft returns in 2023: A look at the Giants’ history

Here’s a look back at the New York Giants’ history in the NFL supplemental draft, which will return in July for the first time since 2019.

Late last week, the NFL informed all 32 teams that the supplemental draft would return in 2023 and take place on July 11.

The league last held the supplemental draft in 2019. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and a temporary shift in both college and professional rules, the draft had been suspended over the previous three years.

As of now, only one prospect — Purdue wide receiver Milton Wright — has been deemed eligible but more names are likely to be added in the coming days and weeks.

Since it was established in 1977, 46 players have been selected in the draft — some of them Hall of Famers and some of them forgotten. And of those 46 picks, the New York Giants have made three.

Here’s a brief history of the Giants and the NFL supplemental draft:

Seahawks: Who are the top-20 interception leaders in franchise history?

The Seahawks defense needs to force more turnovers if they’re ever going to be near elite again. Trouble is, right now free safety Quandre Diggs is about the only guy they can count on to get a pick.

Diggs is easily the best ball hawk Seattle has had since the hero-turned-villain cornerback Richard Sherman was on the roster. Both of them are among the top-20 all-time franchise leaders in interceptions.
