Dave Borgonzi joins Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower’s staff at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl.

Another Chicago Bears coach is joining the staff for the East-West Shrine Bowl. Bears linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi will be the defensive coordinator for the East team. Borgonzi joins Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower’s staff for the game, who will serve as the East’s head coach. Arizona Cardinals passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach Drew Terrell will serve as Hightower’s offensive coordinator.

Borgonzi joined the Bears in 2022, coming over from the Indianapolis Colts with head coach Matt Eberflus, where he held the same role. Borgonzi has played a role in developing young linebackers such as Shaq Leonard and Bobby Okereke with the Colts and Jack Sanborn with the Bears. Under his tutelage this past season, linebackers TJ Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds excelled in their first season with the Bears.

The East-West Shrine Bowl is one of college football’s postseason all-star games that dates back to 1925. Since 2017, the game has pulled assistant coaches from the NFL to serve as coaches for each side. This year’s game takes place Thursday, February 4th, at 7 p.m. CT at the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, TX.

Updated list of DC candidates the Eagles could target with Jonathan Gannon heading to Arizona

We’re looking at an updated list of coaching candidates that could replace Jonathan Gannon as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator

Nick Sirianni now officially has his own coaching tree after the Colts hired Shane Steichen and the Cardinals hired Jonathan Gannon on Tuesday.

Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.

Philadelphia’s second-year head coach has far exceeded expectations and proven that he was the perfect target for the role. However, it’s important to remember that Shane Steichen had a massive role in the offense.

Gannon had interviews with Denver, Houston, and Minnesota last offseason and with Philadelphia reaching the Super Bowl and having a top-five defense, it was only a matter of time before he accepted an offer.

Sirianni knew his assistants were wanted and he stated has a plan for their departures.

“Of course, I want to keep these guys, they’re great coordinators, but in the event that I lose them, I have an idea of what I want to do at both spots. The answer is sometimes, yes, it’s in the building, and sometimes it’s outside of the building. But I feel like we have a lot of good options, and I feel like we have a lot of good options in the building that we’d be excited about if that were to happen.”

With Gannon landing one of the coveted vacancies, here’s an updated list of eight potential targets that could lead the Eagles’ defense in 2023.

Bears LB coach Dave Borgonzi shows his players film of Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs

With the Bears transitioning to a 4-3 defense, LB coach Dave Borgonzi has gone into the vault for some inspiration.

With the Chicago Bears transitioning to a 4-3 defense, linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi has gone into the vault for some inspiration.

Borgonzi shows his players film of former Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, who thrived in Lovie Smith’s defense a couple of decades earlier.

These current Bears appreciate seeing former players in this system, like Urlacher and Briggs, whether it’s that Lovie Smith defense or film from Matt Eberflus’ defenses.

“They enjoy that,” Borgonzi said. “They like seeing the former players in the system play, whether it’s Chicago film, Tampa Bay film with coach [Tony] Dungy, Dallas film when coach Flus was there, Indianapolis. We always talk about the system and the style of play. I think they really enjoy doing that.”

Urlacher and Briggs anchored those dominant Bears defenses in the early 2000s, and the pair have combined for 15 Pro Bowls, 5 first-team All-Pro nods and 3 second-team All-Pro nods. Urlacher was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility in 2018.

No one is expecting this group of Bears linebackers to reach those levels. But the hope is this group, featuring Roquan Smith and Nicholas Morrow, will see noticeable improvement in this scheme.

The Bears officially hired former Colts assistants Dave Borgonzi and David Overstreet.

The Chicago Bears officially hired former Indianapolis Colts linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and assistant defensive backs coach David Overstreet to the coaching staff under Matt Eberflus.

This was expected given the reports that surfaced following the Bears’ hiring of Eberflus as their new head coach. But with the team announcing it, the moves become official.

Both coaches will be holding the same role in Chicago as they did during their time with the Colts.

As it stands, the Bears have officially hired four coaches from the Colts. With Eberflus as head coach, he also brought with him former safeties coach Alan Williams to be the defensive coordinator.

It was also reported that cornerbacks coach James Rowe would be following Eberflus to Chicago but that has yet to be announced.
