Chiefs protect 4 practice squad players for Week 15

The #Chiefs protected three defensive linemen and a receiver on the practice squad ahead of their Week 15 game against the #Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs have protected four practice squad players ahead of their Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kansas City protected DT Cortez Broughton, DE Shilique Calhoun, DE Austin Edwards and WR Daurice Fountain according to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday. This is the second time the team has protected Fountain and Edwards, but the first time for Broughton and Calhoun.

With news of Chris Jones entering the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol, it makes sense for the team to elevate some defensive linemen for the game on Thursday. With his flexibility to play both inside and outside, it’s no shock that the team is considering adding both interior and exterior pass rushers.

One player who makes a ton of sense is Broughton, who is a former draft pick by Los Angeles. He was released by the Chargers during 53-man roster cuts back in September.

With Josh Gordon also on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the team can elevate Daurice Fountain as a COVID replacement. This doesn’t count against the two standard elevations that he’s allotted before the team risks losing a player to waivers.

Fountain was elevated via standard elevation back in Week 11 against the Cowboys. He filled in on special teams for WR Marcus Kemp, who could be a bigger part of the offensive game plan this week with Gordon on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. That’d put Fountain in line to get more snaps on special teams again in Week 15.

While the moves to protect these practice squad players signals that the Chiefs are preparing to be without both Gordon and Jones, the team has yet to formally rule out both players.

Chiefs announce trio of roster moves on Saturday

The #Chiefs have officially activated RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire from injured reserve, elevated WR Daurice Fountain to the 53-man roster and waived TE Daniel Brown.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on Saturday ahead of their Week 11 rodeo with the Dallas Cowboys.

In a highly-anticipated move by Chiefs fans and fantasy footballers alike, Kansas City has officially activated RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire from injured reserve. The second-year halfback was placed on IR after he suffered an MCL sprain against Buffalo Bills in Week 5.

The former first-round draft pick was designated to return last week, but he needed the two weeks of practice before Rick Burkholder gave the team the green light to activate him to the 53-man roster. Andy Reid was pleased with what he saw from Edwards-Helaire at practice this week. Fans should expect that he resumes a significant role in the offense rather quickly, even with Darrel Williams emerging as a pass-catching threat in Week 10 against the Raiders.

The team didn’t need to make room for Edwards-Helaire on the 53-man roster this week because of Marcus Kemp’s placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Knowing they eventually would need to make a roster move, the team preemptively waived TE Daniel Brown, who was acquired in the Laurent Duvernay-Tardif trade. He was a healthy scratch last week and never ended up playing a game for Kansas City. He could return on the practice squad if he’s not claimed.

Additionally, the Chiefs have elevated WR Daurice Fountain to the 53-man roster as COVID replacement. This designation is significant because it doesn’t count toward the two standard elevations the team is allotted per player. The team signaled an elevation was coming when they protected Fountain on the practice squad on Thursday. He’ll serve as a primary replacement for Kemp on both special teams and on offense. Fountain was a preseason standout for Kansas City, catching 10 passes for 118 yards and recovering an onside kick on special teams.

The Chiefs still await the return of Kyle Long, who remains on the Reserve/PUP list. That will have to wait until after the bye week in Week 13.

Chiefs protect practice squad WR Daurice Fountain ahead of Week 11 vs. Cowboys

The #Chiefs have protected practice squad WR Daurice Fountain, signaling he could be elevated for Week 11 game vs. the #Cowboys on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a late-week practice squad protection, using one of their four allotted protections.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice, the Chiefs have protected WR Daurice Fountain on the practice squad. This decision comes following the news that WR Marcus Kemp had been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Connecting the dots, this could signal that the coaching staff intends to elevate Fountain to the 53-man roster via standard elevation ahead of the Week 11 game against the Dallas Cowboys..

Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Chiefs WR coach Joe Bleymaier explained how they were preparing given Kemp’s addition to the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

“Yeah, I mean, next man up,” Bleymaier said. “So, we’ll have people ready to go and when their opportunity this week arises they’ll go make the most of it. . . So next guy up, we’ll have guys ready. They’ll be excited for it. . .”

Should Fountain be a gameday elevation, he should be prepared to participate in the offense if need be. The 6-1 and 210-pound wideout was the Chiefs’ leading receiver during the preseason, catching 10 passes for 118 yards. He also came on strong on special teams toward the end of the preseason, recovering an onside kick in the final game.

Fountain initially earned a spot on the 53-man roster out of training camp, but was a healthy scratch for the first five games of the season before he was released. He later re-signed to the practice squad in Kansas City and has quietly been working and waiting for his opportunity. That opportunity looks like it could be coming against the Cowboys.

Chiefs re-sign WR Daurice Fountain to practice squad

The #Chiefs released WR Daurice Fountain from the 53-man roster earlier this week, but he’s already back on the practice squad in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs released WR Daurice Fountain from the 53-man roster on Tuesday, but he has already rejoined the team’s practice squad per the NFL’s official personnel notice.

A former fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, Fountain took an unconventional path to the 53-man roster in Kansas City after pulling out all the stops this offseason. He flashed big-play ability in training camp and finished the preseason with 10 receptions for 118 yards, impressing in each consecutive performance.

He made the initial 53-man roster with the Chiefs and fans expected big things. Unfortunately, making the 53-man roster was the only highlight he managed to put together during the regular season. The 25-year-old receiver was a healthy scratch through Week 5, and he didn’t have an opportunity to see the field and impress during his time on the active roster. With the addition of Josh Gordon, Fountain became expendable given his lack of playtime.

Now, Fountain will continue his progress, but this time joining the 16-man practice squad in Kansas City and working with the scout team. Fountain’s addition rounds out the practice squad, bringing it to a full 16 players for the Chiefs. He joins fellow WRs Gehrig Dieter and Cornell Powell, who have both been on the practice squad for the entire 2021 NFL season.

Has Chiefs WR Daurice Fountain done enough to earn a roster spot?

#Chiefs WR Daurice Fountain has been a standout in each preseason game so far, but has he done enough to make the 53-man roster?

Daurice Fountain was about as far away from a roster spot as he could possibly be back in May when he was invited to try out at rookie minicamp.  Since signing with the Kansas City Chiefs following that tryout, Fountain has impressed every step of the way.

A former fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 by the way of the University of Northern Iowa, Fountain saw a steady build-up at training camp. He surprised the coaching staff, earning repetitions with the second-team offense after continued hard work.

In the preseason, the story has been no different. Through two games, the 6-1 and 210-pound wideout has been the Chiefs’ leading receiver, catching 7-of-9 passes for 92 yards. The 25-year-old has looked the part too, boasting size, speed, toughness and burst off the line of scrimmage.

Ask any Chiefs fan what they think about Fountain’s performance and they’d tell you that he’s a shoo-in for a roster spot. The reality, however, is that little has been decided with one game left to play.

“A guy like Fountain, he’s got to try and impress on everything he does,” Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub said on Tuesday. “He’s got to, obviously, show up on special teams a little bit more, I mean that’ll help him. But he’s done such a good job on offense. I’m not saying he’s a shoo— he’s one of those guys that’s battling. He’s a bubble guy and those guys are fighting for a spot and there’s a lot of competition on this team.”

The receiver position is one of the most competitive on the roster, with 11 of the 80 players left on the offseason roster playing the position. With most of the top spots already written in ink, Fountain will have to make the absolute most of his opportunities in all phases of the game. Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is someone who believes that Fountain has gone about things the right way.

“Daurice (Fountain) is one of those kids who doesn’t want to take anything for granted,” Bieniemy said. “The only Daurice wants to know is what can he do better? The biggest thing that Coach Joe Bleymaier, myself and Coach Reid have all talked to him about is just making sure that he can fine-tune three little aspects of his game each and every day. The kid works hard and on top of that, he’s a smart player. And then, obviously, you’ve seen the fruits of his labor because what he has done in practice is showing up on game day and we see it each and every day. And it’s because he’s invested in himself and invested in that playbook. And when he has an opportunity to go up and make that play, he just goes up and makes it. The kid is a great kid. I’m proud of the things that he’s done so far and we’re just going to keep evaluating him.”

With the preseason wrapping up, Fountain could get his fewest snaps with starters set to play in extended time. Even if his opportunities are limited, count him among the many players who need a strong showing against the Minnesota Vikings.

“I think everybody needs to have a good showing,” Toub explained. “There are guys that you might think are easy ins right now, but they’re still fighting. It’s not over. The decision is not made until this last game is done and we get down to 53. They’ve got to keep fighting, everybody. There are a lot of positions that are still open right now and special teams will have something to do with it, but offense and defense mostly.”

Fountain knows that he must continue to take advantage of his reps in order to showcase his skills. He said as much following his preseason Week 1 breakout. The Chiefs have helped instill the right mentality in Fountain, but now it’s about going out, executing and interviewing for his new job one more time.

“One thing that we express to all these guys. . . I always remind them, there’s an imaginary sign outside of that door,” Bieniemy said. “That imaginary sign says, ‘Hiring all applicants.’ I remind them, ‘Every single day that you’re in this building, make sure that you’re interviewing for a job.’ So if you’re interviewing for a job, guess what? If you’re good enough, you’re going to make it. On top of that, if you put the right stuff on tape, you’ll have an opportunity to make it somewhere else.”

One thing is for certain, if Fountain doesn’t make the 53-man roster in Kansas City, it won’t be for a lack of showing up during preseason games.

Ex-Colts WR Daurice Fountain signs with Chiefs

The former fifth-round pick finds a new home.

Former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Daurice Fountain signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, per his agent.

Fountain signed with the Chiefs after being one of five players to attend their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

A fifth-round pick for the Colts in 2018, Fountain played three snaps during his rookie campaign. He had a promising start to training camp in 2019 before suffering a dislocated ankle during the joint practices with the Cleveland Browns.

After missing the 2019 season due to the injury, Fountain failed to make the 53-man roster in 2020 but was signed to the practice squad. He was elevated for the Week 9 game against the Baltimore Ravens but reverted back to the practice squad and spent the remainder of the season there.

The Colts decided against re-signing him during the 2021 offseason.

Chiefs to sign WR Daurice Fountain following rookie minicamp tryout

A new receiver is in the fold for the Kansas City Chiefs after a successful rookie minicamp tryout.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to add WR Daurice Fountain to the 90-man offseason roster following a tryout at rookie minicamp according to his agent.

Fountain, 25, is a former fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 out of the University of Northern Iowa. He didn’t make much of an early impact, spending his rookie season on the practice squad in Indianapolis.

A promising second year was cut short when Fountain suffered a season-ending ankle injury during training camp. He had another shot during the 2020 season after signing an exclusive rights tender contract, but bounced back and forth between the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

In total, Fountain appeared in just 6 games, catching two passes for 23 yards on three targets.

Fountain is clearly excited about his new opportunity, starting fresh with a new organization after a successful rookie minicamp tryout. He was one of the lone NFL veterans to receive a tryout opportunity from Kansas City.

Fountain was a promising prospect coming out of college, but his circumstances have been less than ideal since he’s entered the league. He’ll have his work cut out for him, joining a strong receiver room with a number of players vying for an opportunity to make the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Colts sign WR Daurice Fountain to the practice squad

The Colts signed WR Daurice Fountain to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Daurice Fountain to the practice squad and released running back Darius Jackson from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Fountain, a fifth-round pick in 2018, was waived the day before the Week 8 win over the Detroit Lions in favor of second-round pick Michael Pittman Jr., who was activated off of the injured reserve list.

On the season, Fountain has two receptions on three targets for 23 yards. He’s played just 11% of the offensive snaps this season.

It has been a slow development for the young wide receiver who has shown flashes of his promise in parts of three seasons. For now, he will remain on the practice squad to continue his development.

Colts release unofficial depth chart for Week 9

Depth chart for Week 9.

The Indianapolis Colts (5-2) have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of the Week 9 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens (5-2) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Like every week when the unofficial depth chart is released, it doesn’t always represent the pecking order. Some players may be listed lower on the depth chart despite seeing more snaps or usage in the actual games. The roster could also change at some point if the Colts decide to make additions from the practice squad or in free agency.

But here’s a look at the depth chart to begin the week for the Colts:

Colts activate WR Michael Pittman Jr. from IR

Colts get their rookie WR back.

The Indianapolis Colts activated wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the injured reserve list and waived wide receiver Daurice Fountain.

The move to activate Pittman Jr. was expected. It wasn’t a full guarantee that he would be activated this week but after practicing all three days coming out of the bye week, the Colts will get their second-round rookie back on the field.

Pittman Jr. has been on the injured reserve list since suffering leg compartment syndrome against the New York Jets in Week 3. He spent the next three games plus the bye week on injured reserve and now makes his return.

In three games played this season, Pittman Jr. has nine receptions for 73 yards.

Fountain wound up being a healthy scratch in Week 6 against the Bengals and after being waived, it is likely that the Colts will try to bring him back to the practice squad.
