Alabama Football lands Wake Forest transfer defensive back DaShawn Jones

The Alabama football program added talent to its secondary as Wake Forest DaShawn Jones announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

After taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend, Wake Forest transfer defensive back DaShawn Jones has committed to Alabama. Jones is the second defensive back to commit in as many weeks joining Charlotte transfer safety Kameron Howard.

Jones was pursued by multiple other programs including the Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, and LSU Tigers. In the end, the Alabama coaching staff was able to sell the Maryland native on why Alabama was the best fit for him and his family.

Jones spent three seasons in Winston-Salem, North Carolina playing for the Demon Deacons. He recorded 61 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass deflections.

In all likelihood, Jones will compete for the starting corner spot alongside Alabama cornerback Domani Jackson. The chances of Jones seeing early playing time are increasingly high given Alabama’s inexperience at cornerback.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program and its involvement in the transfer portal.

Brian Kelly addresses transfer portal woes, says LSU won’t ‘buy players’

Brian Kelly said some of LSU’s issues in the portal stem from players who “want to be bought.”

It’s been a rough go of things during the spring transfer portal for the LSU football team.

The Tigers targeted three major players — defensive tackles [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag] and cornerback [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag]. All three have since committed elsewhere.

LSU has some serious holes to plug on a defense that was one of the worst in the SEC last season and lost multiple starters, and it’s looking increasingly unlikely that those problems will be addressed substantially this offseason.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] recently addressed those concerns during an exclusive interview with Jacques Doucet of WAFB. While he recognized that the Tigers have had some issues in the portal, he implied that those have stemmed from a lack of fit.

Particularly, Kelly made it clear that LSU has no intention of “buying players” in the transfer portal.

“I think I made it pretty clear in a number of the press conferences that I had that we were in the market in recruiting and the transfer portal looking for defensive lineman,” Kelly said. “It hasn’t fared very well, quite frankly, because we’re selling something a little bit differently. And that is, we want to recruit, we want to engage, build relationships, we want to develop, retain and have success.

“We’re not in the market of buying players and unfortunately right now, that’s what some guys are looking for. They want to be bought. And I understand that NIL is part of this, and we have an incredible collective, we have very, very generous opportunities around the greater Baton Rouge area for NIL opportunities. So they are here, but we’re not going to go out and buy players. That’s not what this is about, this was never about that.

“We will develop you, we will get you ready for the next step… but if you’re just looking to get paid, you’re looking in the wrong place. If you like all the things that we do here in developing our players, bringing you into a championship program, playing in front of the best fanbase in America, playing for championships and having an opportunity for NIL, you should be a Tiger. But if you just want to get paid, this is not the place for you.”

Options are dwindling for the Tigers in the transfer portal, and that could lead to depth issues at a number of positions, particularly defensive tackle where the team returns just two players with game experience.

But Kelly seems confident in the current group, and for better or worse, he doesn’t seem to be keen on getting into bidding wars for players in the transfer portal.

Alabama football trending for Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones

This would be an important piece for Alabama football in 2024!

After an eventful Sunday for [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team, it appears Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama football team have picked up some good news too.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports is reporting that Wake Forest transfer cornerback [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag] is trending toward a commitment to Coach DeBoer and the Crimson Tide.

Jones has been on a visit this weekend in Tuscaloosa with the Alabama coaching staff and all signs are pointing to the staff doing their do-diligence in landing the talented corner.

Jones has started the past two seasons for the Demon Deacons and had a breakout season in 2023 collecting three interceptions as a sophomore.

Adding a talented player like Jones would be critical for Coach DeBoer and Alabama with the lack of depth and experience being an offseason issue in the secondary.

LSU cornerback transfer target DaShawn Jones reportedly expected to commit to Alabama

LSU seemingly missed on another transfer portal target in the spring window.

Recent reports indicated that LSU had made contact with Wake Forest cornerback transfer [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag] and was attempting to get him on campus for a visit.

However, it looks like that isn’t going to happen.

On Sunday evening, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Jones is expected to commit to Alabama. A redshirt sophomore from Baltimore, Jones started nine of the 10 games he appeared in this past season for the Demon Deacons.

He finished the year with 37 tackles, a team-high three interceptions and a pair of pass breakups. Jones played in 22 games over the previous two seasons after redshirting his true freshman season in 2021.

Assuming Jones ultimately commits to the Crimson Tide, it will be another transfer target the Tigers have missed out on during the spring transfer portal window. They also targeted defensive tackles [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Simeon Barrow Jr.[/autotag], who committed to Oklahoma and Miami, respectively.

LSU reportedly trying to get premier cornerback transfer on campus for a visit

The Tigers are looking to land a major addition for the secondary.

LSU has missed out on several of its top transfer targets along the defensive line during the spring portal window, but it may be in a position to help out its secondary.

On3 first reported earlier this week that the Tigers had made contact with Wake Forest cornerback transfer [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag], and now LSU is attempting to get him on campus for a visit, per Zack Nagy of LSU Country.

Jones, who was a redshirt sophomore for the Demon Deacons in 2023, has played in 22 games over the last two seasons after redshirting in 2021. He started nine of the 10 games he appeared in during the 2023 season, totaling 37 tackles (1.5 for loss), two pass breakups and a team-high three interceptions.

LSU could use some additional depth at cornerback with veteran [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag] and sophomores [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] and [autotag]Ashton Stamps[/autotag] competing for starting spots on the outside.

Alabama football eyeing three transfer portal DBs to strengthen depth in secondary

Alabama football in for a MASSIVE weekend of transfer portal visits!

There is no denying that the Alabama Crimson Tide football team is lacking depth in the secondary as things sit right now. Between NFL draft departures and the transfer portal, the defensive back room has been hit harder than any other position group this offseason in Tuscaloosa.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer has not kept it a secret that he and his staff are heavily targeting DBs in the portal and this is made evident by the trio of portal targets that will be on campus this weekend and next week.

According to BamaOnline (subscription required), the Crimson Tide is currently hosting Wake Forest transfer cornerback DaShawn Jones and Penn State transfer safety King Mack.

Coach DeBoer and company are also expected to host former Indiana and Texas Tech cornerback Kobee Minor starting on Monday.

It’s safe to say that the next couple of days will be huge for the Alabama coaching staff as acquiring depth in secondary is a must for the Tide this offseason.

LSU reportedly in contact with Wake Forest cornerback transfer

The Tigers have made the defensive line the focus in the second portal window, but they may also be looking for back-end help.

LSU has made the defensive line a clear focus during the second transfer portal window and has been in the mix for several top targets including [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag], a former TCU defensive tackle who visited earlier this week.

But the Tigers also have needs elsewhere, particularly in the defensive backfield. It seems they may be trying to address that as they’re one of several schools that have contacted Wake Forest cornerback transfer [autotag]DaShawn Jones[/autotag], according to On3 (subscription required).

Jones is a redshirt sophomore from Baltimore who has appeared in 22 games for the Demon Deacons. After redshirting his first season in 2021, he became a starter down the stretch in 2022 and started nine of the 10 games he appeared in this past fall.

He finished the 2023 season with 37 tackles (1.5 for loss) and led the team with three interceptions.

The current projected starters at cornerback for LSU are [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag], who is coming off a season-ending injury in 2023, and [autotag]Ashton Stamps[/autotag], who emerged down the stretch of his true freshman season.

Also in the mix are sophomore [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] and Ohio State transfers [autotag]JK Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jyaire Brown[/autotag], the former of which was on the team last season but missed the entire season after suffering an injury in training camp.

Wake Forest statistical leaders through 10 games

Here’s who could give the Irish trouble.

This has been a rough season for Wake Forest. After winning their first three games, the Deacons have lost six of their past seven. Their bowl hopes rest on whether they can win their final two games or at least one on the outside chance that there aren’t not enough six-win teams. Regardless, it’s not a great situation to be in.

Notre Dame isn’t going to take it easy on the Deacons just because they’re struggling. If anything, the Irish will be on a mission to improve their own bowl resume. No, it won’t be a bowl the casual college football fan cares about, but it would be nice for them to play when most people aren’t at work.

The Deacons have a tall order in trying to salvage something of this season, but they’ll try to do so anyway. Here are the players who can help them do that:
