According to coach Pete Carroll, Penny has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Friday night’s preseason game against the Cowboys.
Few NFL players have had worse injury luck the last few years than Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny. While he finished the 2021 season on a strong note, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy yet this year. Penny has missed the first two preseason games due to a groin injury and will now have to sit out the third.

Pete Carroll said Rashaad Penny has COVID-19 and will miss Friday's game. Very minor symptoms and should be back with the team soon. #Seahawks

The Seahawks are also without their No. 2 running back, rookie Ken Walker – who’s out due to a hernia.
The run game has still been strong even in their absence, though. Seattle’s backups and offensive line have produced what has been the league’s most-efficient rushing offseason so far this preseason.
Yesterday the team signed undrafted rookie Ronnie Rivers to add some depth at this spot.
Penny is the second Seahawks player to miss time this month due to COVID-19. Quarterback Drew Lock had to sit out last week’s game against the Bears for the same reason.

Here are some studs and duds from this week’s preseason game.
The Seahawks played about as ugly as they ever have under Pete Carroll in last night’s 27-11 loss to the Bears. It’s only a preseason game, though and we saw more positive flashes from important young players on the team.
Here are some studs and duds from this week’s preseason game.
The Seattle Seahawks have plenty of work to do to get ready for their preseason finale after dropping Thursday’s game to the Chicago Bears.
Even by already-low preseason standards, the Seattle Seahawks played a very uninspiring game of football. On Thursday night in front of the 12th Man for the first time this summer, the Seahawks fell to the visiting Chicago Bears 27-11 in their second preseason game.
Right from the get-go, the Seahawks were sloppy for most of the night and it cost them dearly. Some late-game magic with a botched Bears punt return and recovered onside kick weren’t able to overcome Seattle’s slow start.
In fairness to the Seahawks, they did play last Saturday night in Pittsburgh with a quick turnaround to a Thursday. The exceptionally short week of practice and lack of key starters playing meaningful time would make it difficult for any team to play a competent game.
Regardless, there is more than enough room for improvement for the Seahawks before their preseason finale next Friday in Dallas.
The Seahawks added some depth to their running back group today.
The Seahawks added some depth to their running back group today, signing former Chiefs running back Darwin Thompson to a future contract. Thompson (5-foot-8, 200 pounds) finished his college career at Utah State, where he posted 1,395 yards from scrimmage and scored 20 touchdowns during the 2018 season.
After that, he was picked by Kansas City in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. Thompson didn’t see much time in a crowded Chiefs backfield, though. He only got 64 carries during his first two seasons, totaling 225 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Players who sign future deals usually end up on the practice squad.

Former #Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson has signed a reserve/future contract with the #Seahawks after spending time on #Bucs and #Chiefs practice squads in 2021.
Former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick Darwin Thompson has landed a reserve/future contract with the Seattle Seahawks per the team’s public relations Twitter account.
The Chiefs selected Thompson of Utah State in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. He appeared in 26 career games with Kansas City over the course of two seasons, recording 80 touches for 333 yards and three scores during that span.
Thompson was waived at the onset of the 2021 NFL season during 53-man roster cuts. Instead of re-signing with the Chiefs’ practice squad, Thompson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. He spent the entire 2021 NFL season in Tampa Bay, but he made his return to Kansas City during the 2021 postseason when the team was dealing with injuries to Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams.
When Thompson was elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of the wild-card game against the Steelers he was made inactive. Williams tried to gut through his injury and play, but he only ended up playing a few snaps during the game.
When the Chiefs lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game, Thompson’s practice squad contract expired. He sought out another opportunity instead of signing a reserve/future deal with Kansas City, similar to what happened after he was waived in 53-man roster cuts. It’s clear he’s looking for a situation where he could perhaps be a long-term fixture. In Seattle, he’ll have a chance to compete for that opportunity.

The #Chiefs have elevated WR Daurice Fountain and RB Darwin Thompson to the 53-man roster via standard elevation for the wild-card game vs. the #Steelers.
The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on Saturday ahead of their wild-card round showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to the NFL’s official personnel notice for Saturday, the Chiefs have elevated WR Daurice Fountain and RB Darwin Thompson from the practice squad via standard elevation. The team protected Fountain earlier in the practice week.
Fountain has appeared in two games for the Chiefs this season with the majority of his snaps coming on special teams. It looks like he’ll have some heavy involvement on special teams and potentially even a chance to work on offense. Tyreek Hill was dealing with a heel injury in practice this week, but he’s clear of a game status designation. This elevation doesn’t appear to have anything to do with that injury.
The second elevation comes as a big surprise. Just a day after rejoining the Chiefs via their practice squad, former sixth-round draft pick Darwin Thompson has been brought up from the practice squad. Darrel Williams is looking more and more like a game-time decision with a questionable game status due to a toe injury. Should Williams be unable to play, Thompson could step in and be an emergency option at RB behind Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore. He hasn’t had much practice, but he spent two seasons in the system with Kansas City and even took some postseason snaps in Super Bowl LIV.

After spending the year on the #Buccaneers practice squad, RB Darwin Thompson is back with the #Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs are reuniting with a former sixth-round draft pick.
According to the NFL’s personnel notice on Friday, the Chiefs have signed RB Darwin Thompson to the practice squad. Thompson was drafted out of Utah State by Kansas City in the 2019 NFL draft, with lofty expectations for a late-round draft pick. He appeared in 26 career games with the Chiefs in 2019 and 2020, recording 80 touches for 333 yards and three scores. After two seasons with the team, he was waived at the onset of the 2021 NFL season during 53-man roster cuts.
Instead of re-signing with the practice squad of the team who drafted him, Thompson went on to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. He spent the entire 2021 NFL season in Tampa Bay, but he was released to make room for WR John Brown just a day ago.

With the Chiefs dealing with injuries to both Clyde Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) and Darrel Williams (toe), adding a player familiar with the system for the upcoming playoff run isn’t the worst thing to happen. As fans in the Chiefs Kingdom have learned over the years, it’s important to have a lot of depth at the running back position. Thompson is someone who can step in should Edwards-Helaire and Williams be forced to sit and if any more injuries occur at the position.

A former sixth-round draft pick by the #Chiefs, Darwin Thompson will continue his career with the #Buccaneers per reports.
A former sixth-round draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs has found a new home.
As first reported by KC Star reporter Sam McDowell, former Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson intends to sign to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. This report was later confirmed by Fox 4’s Harold Kuntz. Thompson, of course, was among the Chiefs players waived during final roster cuts on Tuesday.
A sixth-round draft pick out of Utah State in 2019, Thompson entered the league with high expectations. He has appeared in just 26 career games with the Chiefs since he was drafted, including a single start. That start came in Week 17 of the 2020 NFL season against the Los Angeles Chargers and by all accounts, he looked much improved from his rookie season.
Despite the clear improvements made and injuries at the running back position in the postseason, Thompson played just three offensive snaps against the Bills in the AFC title game. He wasn’t even active for Super Bowl LV.

This offseason, Thompson was one of the hardest-working players in Kansas City. Even though he started training camp on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, he stayed working and hit the ground running. He was spotted early to every practice and often stayed late to run hills and get extra work in. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for Thompson in Kansas City, but it did earn him an opportunity with another team.
Thompson amassed 64 carries for 225 yards and two touchdowns, plus 16 catches for 108 yards and a score during his career in Kansas City. He’ll continue on with the reigning Super Bowl champions in Tampa, with a possibility of later being elevated to their 53-man roster.

A sixth-round draft pick in 2019, RB Darwin Thompson has been reported among those cut by the #Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly waived a former sixth-round draft pick during 53-man roster cuts.
The Chiefs selected Utah State RB Darwin Thompson in the sixth round (214 overall) of the 2019 NFL draft on the back of a standout senior campaign. He rushed for 1,044 yards and 14 touchdowns on 153 carries in his lone year at Utah State. He also was a standout in JUCO before transferring to Utah State. Then, of course, he was eye-opening in pre-draft workouts, boasting elite strength and athleticism.
According to a report from KC Star beat writer Sam McDowell, Thompson is the latest player to be waived by the Chiefs in just his third season with the team. He has spent the past two seasons on the 53-man roster and has never been waived before.

Thompson has appeared in 26 career games with the Chiefs since he was drafted, including one start in Week 17 of the 2020 NFL season against the Los Angeles Chargers. During that span, Thompson amassed 64 carries for 225 yards and four touchdowns, adding 16 catches for 108 yards and a score. If Thompson is claimed during the waiver period or signs elsewhere, that’ll be his final stat line in Kansas City.
It truly feels like Thompson didn’t get much of a chance in Kansas City. He flashed at times, but consistency wasn’t a strong suit of his game. It really feels like the fumble lost against the Ravens in Week 3 of 2020 set him back immeasurably in terms of the coaching staff’s trust.
With competition on the roster at an all-time high this preseason, even with a strong performance, it was pretty clear that Thompson was going to have trouble making the team. With Derrick Gore joining Thompson among the Chiefs’ cuts so far, it looks like the team will role with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon in the backfield in 2021.
Look for either Gore or Thompson or both to return on the practice squad for Kansas City if they clear waivers.
