Kentucky is out of the running for a top five 2025 recruit

Number three recruit Darryn Peterson has taken Kentucky out of consideration.

Darryn Peterson is one of the top recruits in the 2025 class, and Kentucky has been working hard to get him to Lexington. It looks like that won’t happen, though, as the Wildcats have been eliminated from consideration.

Peterson is ranked as the number three overall prospect in the 2025 class by 247sports. He’s rated five stars and is the number one combo guard of the group.

Peterson is now down to four schools, with Kentucky not being one of them. USC, Ohio State, Kansas State, and Kansas are the programs still in the running for his services per On3’s Joe Tipton.

Mark Pope and his staff have already landed a top 25 recruit in Malachi Moreno, and are predicted to land top ten player Jasper Johnson. Braylon Mullins is another recruit Kentucky is working hard to land. With Peterson out of the running, Kentucky is sure to work even harder to land the other targets on their list.

Ohio State basketball in top-four of No. 3 prospect in Class of 2025

The Ohio State Buckeyes are a top-four finalist for Darryn Peterson, one of the best basketball recruits in the Class of 2025.

Over the last half a decade, Ohio State Buckeyes have been more of a football school than basketball, but it is looking to change that as the latter could be eyeing a massive recruiting win.

ESPN’s No. 3 overall prospect in the Class of 2025, Darryn Peterson, has announced his final four programs and the Buckeyes are on the list. Per Paul Biancardi, USC, Kansas, and Kansas State are the other finalists for Peterson.

Peterson is from Napa, California, so USC may have a clear edge as the home-state favorite to land the star.

He is the top-ranked player from the state and the best combo guard in the class, coming in at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds, and plays his high school ball at Prolific Prep.

Peterson took a visit to Ohio State on August 30. He would be a standout commit for any of the programs as he’s among the best in the class.

“Peterson is a big guard with good positional size, length, and strength. He’s 6-foot-5, with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, and a cut-up and defined frame. What differentiates him most though is an effortless ability to score and make plays from a variety of spots on the floor, all within the flow of the game,” Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein wrote for 247Sports.

Right now, Dorian Jones is the top-ranked recruit joining the Buckeyes from the Class of 2025. He is the 13th-ranked shooting guard in the class. Jones committed on the first of July.

Five-star 2025 guard puts USC basketball in last eight

USC has a top-three 2025 player in its sights.

Darryn Peterson, the No. 3 overall prospect and No. 1 combo guard in college basketball’s 2025 recruiting class, is down to eight finalists. That list includes the USC basketball program.

According to On3’s Joe Tipton those schools include Ohio State, USC, Kentucky, Lousivlle, Kansas, Washington and Arizona State.

Tipton added that Darryn’s father, Darryl, stated that the current plan is to visit Kansas State in August, Arizona State, Ohio State and Washington in September, Louisville and Kentucky in October and then make a commitment by November. A visit to Kansas has already been made.

The Huntington Prep (WV) star has been highly impressive on the Adidas circuit this summer. Peterson impressed many and continued to earn elite reviews from scouts, coaches, and media members. Eric Musselman continues to be ambitious in his recruiting approach, taking big swings and betting that he will hit the ball out of the park on one or two of them. Getting one big star and surrounding him with role players could give USC the makings of a top team in the future.

No. 3 player in Class of 2025, Darryn Peterson, lists Ohio State basketball in final eight

Darryn Peterson, who is ranked as the third-best player in the Class of 2025, has listed Ohio State in his final 8 schools.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are typically known as a football school, but they could soon be making waves in the basketball world.

Five-star guard, Darryn Peterson, who is ranked as the No. 3 best player in the class of 2025, has reduced his list to eight schools. He broke down those schools to “The Field of 68.”

The Buckeyes are one of two Big Ten programs to crack the list with the USC Trojans being the other. Kansas, Washington, Kansas State, Kentucky, Arizona State, and Louisville also made the cut.

Ohio State has just one commit for the Class of 2025, and that’s Cleveland native, Dorian Jones, who is ranked as the No. 58 player in the nation. The Buckeyes also recently cracked the top ten for four-star point guard Isaiah Denis.

Peterson, who is from Cuyahoga Falls, is the top combo guard in the class and the best player from the state of West Virginia, where he’s currently playing.

He took his official visit to Columbus back on August 30, 2023. In total, Peterson has 24 offers.

247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein gave an electric breakdown of Peterson’s game in June. Here’s an excerpt of what was written.

“Darryn Peterson possesses a combination size, length, strength and skill which allows him to smoothly score and make plays for himself and others. He’s a versatile threat, who can operate from multiple spots on the floor, and has a way of making it look effortless in the process,” Finkelstein noted.

This would be a huge get for the Buckeyes. He would be among the top recruits in program history if he chose to commit to Ohio State.

Kentucky coach Mark Pope is still waiting for his first commitment from the 2025 class, but he and Kentucky basketball did get some good news on Wednesday. Top five recruit Darryn Peterson named his final eight schools, and the Wildcats are on the list.

Peterson had narrowed his choices down to eight once before, but reopened his recruitment after several coaching changes. Kentucky was on the previous list, along with Arkansas and John Calipari.

The new list, according to Peterson’s father, includes Kansas, Ohio State, Louisville, Arizona State, Washington, Kansas State, USC, and the Wildcats.

Peterson is a 6’5″, 195 lb combo guard who plays for Huntington Prep in West Virginia. He is currently ranked as the third overall player in the 2025 class by 247sports, and is the top player at his position.

Visits will be taking place soon, with a visit to Lexington set to happen in October. Mark Pope and all Kentucky fans are hoping he chooses the Wildcats soon after.

Wildcats target Darryn Peterson focused on committing before season

Top five recruit Darryn Peterson is looking to make a commitment before the season begins.

With offers from Kentucky, North Carolina, USC, Kansas and Baylor–just to name a few of the heavy hitters, there’s a reason that Darryn Peterson is widely regarded as one of the most heralded recruits in his class.

The five-star recruit recently won Gold with Team USA at the 2023 FIBA U16 Americas Championship and averaged more than 28 points a game at the adidas 3SSB Championships in Rock Hill South Carolina this past weekend.

Peterson on his own game:

When you put in the work it gives you a confidence to feel like you’re the best, I honestly feel like every player should feel like they’re the best. They definitely should approach it like that. I think that mentality is what helps me on the court.

Darryn’s Dad, former Akron guard Darryl Peterson II, had this to say about his sons game:

For as long as he can remember, Darryn’s been laying the ball off the glass with his right and left while finishing through contact. Now, he’s in the gym three to four times a week, wadding through pools in defensive slides and running hills.

In his sophomore year at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, (OH) Peterson posted 31 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.3 assists a game.

In 2023 he transferred to Huntington Prep (WV) were he averaged 26.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. This past summer he averaged 16.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game with the USAB Junior National Team.

“I want to commit before my season starts,” Peterson said. “That’s my goal; I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do it, but I’m trying to get it done in that time.”

Darryn Peterson set to visit Kentucky basketball later this summer

Five-star guard Darryn Peterson will visit Kentucky basketball this summer.

When new Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope began to recruit for 2025, one of the names high on list list was Darryn Peterson, who Pope offered soon after he took over. He is still very interested in bringing him to Lexington.

Peterson visited Kentucky previously, when John Calipari was still the coach. When the coaching change happened, Peterson didn’t jump to conclusions and move on from the Wildcats. Instead, he listened to Pope, and is still considering the Cats.

Ranked as the number three player in his class by 247sports, Peterson is rated five stars. He’s the top ranked combo guard in the country, and is the number one player out of West Virginia.

Peterson has offers from a number of programs, including from Coach Cal, now at Arkansas. The Huntington Prep star will be making visits this summer, including one to Lexington and the new staff. They’ll certainly use that visit to lure him down I-64 to Kentucky.
