49ers open practice window for three injured defensive players

The 49ers could be welcoming back more reinforcements on the defensive side of the football.

After landing Chase Young in a blockbuster deal on trade deadline day, the San Francisco 49ers could welcome back some more reinforcements on the defensive side of the football.

Following their bye week, the 49ers opened the practice window for three players who were initially placed on the injured reserve. On Monday, the 49ers announced they have opened the practice window for rookie edge rusher Robert Beal Jr., and defensive backs Darrell Luter Jr. and Samuel Womack III.

Robert Beal Jr. started his rookie season on the injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. Beal was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Georgia. Beal Jr. won two national championships with the Bulldogs.

Luter Jr. was placed on the physically unable to perform list beofre the start of training camp due to an bone bruise he suffered in the team’s offseason program. Luter Jr.was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft out of South Alabama.

After playing in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Womack III suffered a knee injury in practice that landed him on the injured reserve.

Coming off the bye week, the 49ers will travel to meet the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.

49ers rookie CB Darrell Luter Jr. dealing with bone bruise

49ers rookie 5th-round pick Darrell Luter Jr. is dealing with a bone bruise that could keep him out for a few weeks according to GM John Lynch.

The 49ers placed rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. on the PUP list before the start of training camp. It turns out the injury was a bone bruise he sustained late in the team’s offseason program.

General manager John Lynch on Tuesday said the club expects Luter to return, but not until later in camp.

“Luter in one of the last OTAs hyper-extended his knee,” Lynch said. “It resulted in a deep bone bruise. He’s working his way back. Still has a few weeks. He’s a kid who really had impressed us throughout the whole draft process, but then in his work here.”

Lynch said Luter never left the team facility following his injury and is working his way through the rehab process.

San Francisco selected Luter in the fifth round out of South Alabama. He’s firmly in the mix for a roster spot in a cornerback room that could use some additional depth.

Missing a few weeks of camp may take him out of the running for any kind of significant defensive role, but there should be plenty of opportunities for special teams contributions and playing time as a reserve if he acquits himself well once he’s in camp with pads on.

How 5th-round CB Darrell Luter Jr. fits in unclear 49ers’ secondary

How does CB Darrell Luter fit on the #49ers roster?

The 49ers’ depth chart at cornerback is relatively unclear going into their offseason workouts. That’s why South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., the No. 155 overall pick by the 49ers in this year’s draft, should have a real shot at making an impact on the roster in his first season.

The only surefire starter at CB for the 49ers is Charvarius Ward. Free agent signee Isaiah Oliver figures to be the starting nickel CB. The side opposite Ward is more of a question mark though.

Deommodore Lenoir acquitted himself well last year and gave himself the inside track to a starting job, but it’s not a slam dunk that he starts on the outside. Luter with his size, length and athleticism could wind up pushing for that spot atop the depth chart. He also showed off good ball skills with 23 pass breakups and five interceptions.

However, if he doesn’t push for a starting job, he could have a lot of value as a reserve. San Francisco doesn’t have a ton of options behind Lenoir after Ambry Thomas’ rough second season. A more realistic projection for Luter likely pushes him into a reserve role where he battles with Thomas for a job as the top CB off the bench.

WATCH: Darrell Luter Jr.’s best highlights from South Alabama

Darrell Luter Jr. figures to play a role in the #49ers defense after the team courted him throughout the pre-draft process

South Alabama product Darrell Luter Jr. is a prospect that the San Francisco 49ers showed obvious interest in during the pre-draft process, and could figure into their plans in the defensive backfield for years to come. A small-school product, he isn’t the most recognized in the class, but his talent is undeniable.

San Francisco waited as long as they could before feeling the need to finally get their guy before any other team had a chance.

Check out his best collegiate highlights below to get familiar with Luter’s game as he looks to make a huge impact for the 49ers in 2023:

49ers draft South Alabama DB Darrell Luter Jr. at No. 155 overall

The #49ers selected South Alabama defensive back Darrell Luter Jr. with the 155th overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft on Saturday

The San Francisco 49ers need to maximize the value of every pick they hold in the 2023 NFL draft and took a step in the right direction with their selection of South Alabama defensive back Darrell Luter Jr. in the fifth round.

Luter has the athleticism that scouts look for in prospects being drafted into NFL secondaries, and met with the 49ers twice throughout the team’s scouting process. He was South Alabama’s most impressive defensive asset last season and was named to PFF’s All-American second team for his efforts in 2022.

A small-school product, Luter will be hard-pressed to compete for snaps in San Francisco’s talented secondary as a rookie but could develop into a productive member of the 49ers’ defense with time to acclimate to the league.

Expect the team to give him a significant number of reps during training camp and the preseason to gauge where his best fit is in their defensive backfield.

Rams 2023 Draft Prospect Profile: Darrell Luter Jr. (CB, South Alabama)

Darrell Luter Jr. would be a viable Day 3 option if the Rams want to address the CB position in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Los Angeles Rams moved on from Jalen Ramsey earlier this offseason, trading him to the Miami Dolphins. With Ramsey no longer in the equation on defense, the cornerback position is ultra-thin for the Rams at the moment.

The top three cornerbacks on the current depth chart are Cobie Durant, Robert Rochell, and Derion Kendrick. Provided that information, the Rams will certainly need to address the cornerback position during the 2023 NFL draft.

With the majority of their draft picks residing on Day 3 of the draft, Darrell Luter Jr. out of South Alabama is a name to watch for the Rams.
