Following the unfortunate news that rookie tight end Andrew Ogletree will miss his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL, the Indianapolis Colts worked out a quintet of tight ends, along with a cornerback, on Friday.
The Colts are still likely to keep just three tight ends on the roster following Ogletree’s injury, but it’s wise to keep an eye on the options available on the market.
Here are the five tight ends and one cornerback the Colts worked out on Friday, according to the league’s transaction wire:
The Houston Texans have released tight end Darrell Daniels and signed tight end Mason Schreck.
The Houston Texans have swapped out tight ends on their roster.
The Texans released Darrell Daniels on Friday. The team then filled Daniels’ spot with Mason Schreck.
Daniels played with the Arizona Cardinals from 2018-21 and caught 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. The former undrafted free agent from Washington played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, catching three passes for 26 yards. For nine games in 2018 before going to the Cardinals, Daniels played two games for the Seattle Seahawks.
Schreck is a former Cincinnati Bengals 2018 seventh-round pick and played 23 career games with one start. The former Buffalo product was predominantly a special teamer as he played 277 such snaps compared to 55 on offense in his four seasons with the Bengals.
Daniels had been with the Cardinals since November 2018 when he was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.
Daniels, between 2018-2021, appeared in 40 games, starting 13, and caught 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
He was primarily a special teams player in 2019 but injuries forced him into action on offense the last two seasons. He played 72% of the Cardinals’ special teams snaps in 2019 — 223 in all. That total dropped to 101 in 2020 (30%) and 128 (32%) in 2021 as his offensive share increased to 43% and 24% after playing in only 7% of the teams offensive snaps in 2019.
With the re-signing of Zach Ertz and Maxx Williams, the signing of Stephen Anderson and then the selection of Trey McBride in the second round of the NFL draft, there wasn’t really a spot on the roster for Daniels to return to Arizona.
The Houston Texans have signed former Arizona Cardinals tight end Darrell Daniels.
The Houston Texans have added a former Arizona Cardinals tight end to their 90-man roster.
The Texans signed Darrell Daniels on Monday. The 6-3, 256-pounder played in 40 games for the Cardinals from 2018-21, starting in 13 of them. Daniels caught 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
Prior to joining the Cardinals, Daniels played nine games with the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. Before heading to the Pacific Northwest, Daniels was with the Indianapolis Colts for 12 games in 2017. Daniels entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Washington in 2017.
On Sunday, the club waived cornerback Jimmy Moreland, which made room for Daniels, who will turn 28 on Nov. 22.
Seahawks DT Robert Nkemdiche, the former Cardinals first-round pick, is one of four players between the two teams that played for the other.
The Arizona Cardinals face NFC West rivals this weekend, taking on the Seattle Seahawks on the road. It is the first of two games they will play this season against one another.
The two teams are familiar foes, having faced one another twice a season since 2002. They both have players who spent time on the other team’s roster.
Between the two teams, there are four player connections, two on each roster.
The two Cardinals exited the game Sunday in the first half, Daniels with a hamstring injury and Lawrence with a calf injury.
The Arizona Cardinals are 6-0 after their 37-14 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. It would appear they came out of the game pretty clean in terms of injuries.
Two players exited the game with injuries and did not return, both in the first half.
Tight end Darrell Daniels left the game with a hamstring injury and did not return. He played 25 offensive snaps and was targeted once as a receiver, but he did not have a catch.
The other injury was to defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence. He only played three defensive snaps in the game. He injured his calf and did not return.
Looking ahead to Week 7, the Cardinals are a little thin on the defensive line right now if Lawrence has to miss any time.
Zach Allen and Corey Peters were placed on the COVID list over the weekend and cannot return until they have no symptoms for 48 hours and have two negative tests, separated by at least 24 hours.
The first injury report of Week 7 will not come out until Wednesday, after their first practice of the week.
Daniels returns to the roster the same day Chandler Jones lands on the COVID list.
The Arizona Cardinals announced some roster moves Tuesday — the return of a player to the active roster and the release of a pair of players from the practice squad.
Tight end Darrell Daniels returns to the roster. He was placed on the COVID list last Wednesday with a positive test of the virus and missed the Cardinals’ 17-10 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
His return comes on the same day that linebacker Chandler Jones landed on the list, also because of a positive test.
The Cardinals also cleared a pair of practice squad spots. They released cornerback Luq Barcoo and receiver Johs Doctson.
While he is out, Demetrius Harris will an increase in his role and Ross Travis will likely get elevated to the active roster for games.
The Arizona Cardinals did not announce it, but a player move appeared on Wednesday’s NFL transaction report. Tight end Darrell Daniels was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
He was the only player in the league to land on the list Wednesday and the report indicated it was the result of a positive test. Daniels will be out until he tests negative consecutively and has no symptoms.
Daniels has played 72 offensive snaps this season, the second-most among the three tight ends on the roster.
That will mean an increased role on offense for Demetrius Harris and it also likely will signal the elevation of tight end Ross Travis from the practice squad to the active roster.
Only TE Darrell Daniels missed any practice time and was limited. LB Dennis Gardeck was a full participant.
The Arizona Cardinals released their first injury report of the year and had almost 100% participation from all players. Aside from defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, who begins the season on injured reserve, they are very healthy.
Only two players appeared on the injury report and only one missed any time.
Linebacker Dennis Gardeck, who is coming off a torn ACL, was surprisingly a full participant in practice Wednesday, which suggests he might be ready to play in the season opener.
However, if he doesn’t have an expected role this weekend, he might have only had a few reps on special teams.
Tight end Darrell Daniels was the only player limited. He has a toe injury.
