Titans had virtual meeting with DL Darel Middleton

The Titans reportedly had a virtual meeting with Bethel DL Darel Middleton.

The Tennessee Titans biggest strength going into the 2023 season is arguably upfront along the defensive line, where the team recently locked up Jeffery Simmons for the long term with a four-year, $94 million deal.

Despite that obvious strength, that hasn’t stopped the Titans from doing their due diligence on the defensive line prospects in the 2023 NFL draft, as the team has met with Bethel University defensive lineman, Darel Middleton, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

After spending two years at Tennessee and one at West Virginia, Middleton transferred to Bethel in 2022, where he started in 10 games and tallied 19 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.

The information out there on Middleton is pretty scarce, but here’s a write-up on the 6-foot-7, 290-pound lineman that comes from CBS Sports’ Emory Hunt, who had this to say about the prospect back in November:

Middleton might be the best defensive line prospect in all of NAIA. He has the great combination of length, athleticism and explosiveness. You want to see guys with his attributes dominate his level of competition, and he does just that. I’m a big fan of his technique, showing the ability to strike first with his hands, read a play out well, disengage and then accelerate to make the play. In fact, he’s so athletic that Bethel has used him in goal line/low red zone situations as a fade, 50/50 guy. Expect to see him surface in a postseason all-star game for sure.

Middleton should be around at the tail end of Day 3 of the draft, but he could also go undrafted. Tennessee has been no stranger to finding an impact defensive lineman after the draft (see: Teair Tart).

Florida set to host this former Tennessee, West Virginia DL on midweek visit

Darel Middleton is as close to a journeyman as it gets in college football. Could Florida be the final stop on his list?

The Florida Gators could use some depth on the defensive line, and Billy Napier is looking to the transfer portal to fill that hole for the upcoming season. The latest name to join the list is former Tennessee and West Virginia defensive lineman [autotag]Darel Middleton[/autotag], according to Blake Alderman of 247Sports.

Middleton and Napier have had discussions with each other, and the 6-foot-7-inch, 305-pound lineman plans on meeting the staff in person on June 2 and 3, per Alderman’s report. No offer is on the table just yet, but an in-person visit is sure to speed up that process.

A four-star recruit out of high school, Middleton attended East Mississippi CC in 2017 and 2018 before transferring to Tennessee. He’d start six games and appear in all 13 for the Volunteers in 2019, finishing the season with 28 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. In 2020, he played in nine games and started another six, totaling just 15 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and two pass breakups.

He decided to transfer to West Virginia last year but wound up playing just three games for the Mountaineers before leaving the team in October to reenter the transfer portal. Reports surfaced at the beginning of the year that Middleton had committed to Alabama A&M, but that no longer appears to be the case. Aside from Florida, Jackson State, Tennessee State and Texas Tech are in the mix. Each will play host to Middleton over the summer.

Four schools in six years can shine a bad light on a player, but Middleton certainly has the talent. Napier has been nothing but a strong judge of character since he stepped onto campus, so bringing him in to meet face-to-face should help him gauge if Middleton is right for the program.

On Monday, Middleton took to Twitter to apologize for his actions.

A way-too-early preview of Tennessee’s defensive line in 2020

2020 Tennessee football.

KNOXVILLE — When Jeremy Pruitt took over as the head coach at Tennessee in Dec. 2017, there was a litany of flaws on a football team that was coming off a 4-8 campaign that saw Butch Jones fired.

Possibly the toughest challenge to overcome was Tennessee’s weakness in the trenches.

Both the offensive and defensive lines were devoid of talent and size needed to compete in the SEC. Heading into 2020, those two units are the only ones that return every starter from a 2019 season that ended with a six-game win streak and finishing 8-5.

One of the best pro prospects up front defensively for Tennessee is rising senior defensive end Aubrey Solomon. The former 5-star and Michigan transfer learned of his eligibility only days before the season-opener against Georgia State and finished the season with 28 tackles and three sacks. Another year in Pruitt’s system should benefit Solomon, especially as he is surrounded by more experienced talent.
