Danny White discusses fluid situation in hiring Tennessee’s football head coach

Tennessee introduced Danny White as its athletics director Friday.

Tennessee introduced Danny White as its athletics director Friday.

White comes to Tennessee from the University of Central Florida.

During White’s introductory press conference, he discussed his process in searching for Tennessee’s next football head coach.

“Ideally, in the age of social media and everything, it starts and it ends with the student-athletes,” White said. “I’ve been able to accomplish that in all three of my football searches.”

As athletics director at Buffalo, White hired Lance Leipold away from his alma mater, Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he won six NCAA Division III national championships (2007, 2009–2011, 2013–2014).

White hired Scott Frost as head coach at UCF.

When Frost departed for the same position at his alma mater, Nebraska, after a 13-0 2017 season, White hired Josh Heupel. Heupel came to UCF from Missouri as the Tigers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

White mentioned he wants to be in communication with his student-athletes first when it comes to hiring a head coach.

“I want them to be the first ones to find out who their new coach is,” White said. “What happens in between, there is a whole lot going on there. I’m going to do a lot of homework. I’ve spent a lot of time researching and calling. I’m fortunate to have a pretty significant network in intercollegiate athletics and I realize it is probably because of the way I grew up. I can get a candidate’s opinion from folks and really understand who they are from a character standpoint. I don’t want to even be interviewing someone if I have questions about that.

“We need to make sure the person we’re bringing in to run our program is going to do it the right way, is going to do right by these kids and is going to have an aggressive vision to get us highly competitive — so I don’t know if I can offer any more detail than that because it’s a pretty fluid situation.”

White tends to be creative in a hiring process, going in a direction where others are not thinking.

That thought process could realistically go in a direction of Ole Miss’ head coach Lane Kiffin.

White previously served as senior associate athletics director at Mississippi between 2009-12. He was associate athletics director for development at California State-Fresno from 2007-09, where Kiffin played collegiately as a quarterback.

In 2006, White served as assistant athletics director for development at Northern Illinois. At that time, Joe Novak was head coach for Northern Illinois. Novak currently serves on the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions.

Novak previously discussed with Vols Wire, Tennessee’s current internal investigation within the UT football program.

White’s brother, Brian White, is the vice president and director of athletics at Florida Atlantic, where Kiffin served as head coach before taking the Ole Miss job.

White’s background of creating a national spotlight on programs he has been in charge of allows for a return of Kiffin as the Vols’ next head coach. Kiffin’s return to Rocky Top, a position he held in 2009 before leaving for Southern Cal, would create a national spotlight for Tennessee’s program.

At Buffalo, White branded the Bulls’ program as the University of New York. During his tenure at UCF, White claimed the Golden Knights as the 2017 national champions after finishing 13-0 and being left out of the College Football Playoff.

During Kiffin’s lone season at Tennessee, he branded the 2009 campaign as “It’s Time.”

Leipold is multiple in his offense.

His offense features everything from 10-personnel, 11-personnel, 12-personnel, goal-line jumbo packages and spreading personnel out to move the ball vertically.

“A lot of those philosophies have always been there,” Leipold said on the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days.” “The philosophies in the room are very similar, and one of the things is, we want to be as balanced as possible and utilize as many formations, but also utilize our personnel in the best.

“If you’re going to win games and want to play games in November, and if you want to play beyond that, you better be able to run the football at certain times, and be able to stop the run. At the same time, you want to be able to spread it out and take our shots down the field.”

America’s Team: Cowboys 10 most memorable Thanksgiving Day games

With 52 Thanksgiving games on their resume, the Cowboys have plenty of holiday memories to choose from. Cowboys Wire picks out the 10 best.

America’s Team is as much a part of the All-American holiday as parade floats and candied yams. The Dallas Cowboys will host their 53rd Thanksgiving Day game in 2020. This season’s edition will mark the tenth time Dallas has welcomed their division rivals from Washington for the traditional late afternoon tilt. That’s the most of any Cowboys Thanksgiving opponent.

Over the years, the club’s Thanksgiving Day series has created some of pro football’s most memorable moments, including several chapters that are absolutely indelible within the Cowboys’ own storied history. To celebrate, Cowboys Wire takes a look back through the archives to dish out the ten quintessential Thanksgiving games that have meant the most to the team.

But the feast can’t be all deep-fried turkey and pumpkin pie; mixed in with some of the franchise’s most satisfying wins are also a few standout games that didn’t go Dallas’s way. Consider them the unpleasant cranberry sauce that your weird aunt brings every few years and makes you have at least a small helping of.
