New Orleans Saints vs. Green Bay Packers game recap: Everything we know

New Orleans Saints vs. Green Bay Packers game recap: Everything we know, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

The New Orleans Saints came up short against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, losing their second preseason game by a final score of 20-10. There weren’t many minutes played by the starters, with second-year quarterback Ian Book leading the offense for most of the evening without his best playmakers in the lineup. Still, we learned a lot with many position battles playing out in each phase of the game on offense, defense, and special teams. Here’s everything you need to know:

Aaron Rodgers perfectly sets the table for Danny Etling’s 51-yard touchdown run

The four-time NFL MVP can apparently conjure up touchdowns while on the sidelines.

Moments after Aaron Rodgers complimented his athleticism and reminisced about recently watching one of his long touchdown runs with the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers quarterback Danny Etling took off for a 51-yard touchdown run on Friday night against the New Orleans Saints.

The four-time NFL MVP can apparently conjure up touchdowns while on the sidelines.

Rodgers perfectly set the table for the touchdown run while appearing on the Packers TV Network broadcast during the series. He talked up Etling’s athletic ability and then mentioned the Packers quarterbacks all watching Etling’s 86-yard touchdown run during the 2018 preseason.

With Rodgers still answering questions on the broadcast, Etling took off the right side on 3rd-and-1 and out-ran the entire Saints defense for a touchdown.

“What did I tell ya? What did I tell ya?” Rodgers yelled while watching Etling sprint into the end zone on the Lambeau Field Jumbotron.

Later, the broadcast showed Rodgers excitedly explaining what happened to Etling on the sidelines following the score.

What a cool moment. Etling, who Rodgers compared to former Packers backup Scott Tolzien, has a terrific opportunity to stick around in Green Bay as the No. 3 quarterback on the practice squad.

Following the touchdown, the Packers now lead the Saints, 20-10, in the fourth quarter.

Myles Brennan and the end of an era that never happened

For a guy that only started three games, Brennan’s name will be remembered for a long time.

Not every story has a fairy tale ending.

College football is special, not because of the game on the field, but because of the stories and myths behind the curtain.

The story of [autotag]Myles Brennan[/autotag] and his time at LSU is a complex one. Since he first committed to the program, he’s seen two coaching changes. He was a part of a team that lost Troy and a team that won it all.

He committed when [autotag]Cam Cameron[/autotag] was offensive coordinator and has since seen four more OCs — six if you count [autotag]Joe Brady[/autotag] and [autotag]Scott Linehan[/autotag].

He’s played through a pandemic, suffered injuries and watched [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] win a Heisman.

Brennan arrived at LSU with plenty of hype. [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] took over and promised to change the offense. Brennan was going to be the guy that ended LSU’s quarterback woes.

He saw some action in 2017 as he sat behind [autotag]Danny Etling[/autotag]. The assumption was that Brennan would take over in 2018. That was before Burrow arrived.

To the surprise of many, Brennan didn’t transfer. He stuck around.

A quarterback with his talent level would have had no trouble finding a new home, but he chose to stay. After battling behind Burrow for two years, it was finally going to be Brennan’s moment.

Then the pandemic happened.

LSU was hit hard. This was a program already trying to replace a ton, and COVID-19 disrupted nearly everything. LSU was having to install a new offense when it didn’t even know if there was going to be a season. [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag] opted out, and suddenly Brennan lost his top weapon.

Brennan’s first few games in 2020 were good — not great, but good enough. He struggled behind the offensive line, and in the loss to Mississippi State, he looked like a guy that was making his first career start, which he was.

Despite a terrible offensive line, young wide receivers and an offensive staff that was figuring it out on the fly, Brennan still managed to throw for 1,112 yards in just three games.

Then he got hurt. Just as he was settling in, he was finished for the year. A devastating blow.

Alright, so 2021 was going to be his chance, right? This was it. He was healthy, and LSU was ready to rebound back to relevance after 2020.

Just before camp, Brennan broke his arm on a fishing trip. Again, he was done for the season. As the season ended, Brennan entered the transfer portal. It made sense. After all that time at LSU, nothing had gone his way. It was time for a fresh start.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] spoke with Brennan and convinced him to return to LSU. [autotag]Max Johnson[/autotag] had transferred, and it looked like there was a clear path for Brennan to start.

In his sixth-year, he’d finally get a real opportunity.

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] then transferred to LSU and [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] continued to progress. As fall camp continued, it became evident that the battle was down to Daniels and Nussmeier.

This time, it was it. This was final. After six years, Brennan would not be LSU’s quarterback.

For a guy that only started three games, Brennan’s name will be remembered for a long time. A lot of that may be just because we talked about him for six offseasons.

Outside of 2019 when Burrow was the clear starter, Brennan was a part of five separate position battles.

Brennan was a good quarterback. I think what he did in 2020 was enough to convince us of that.

I wonder what would have happened in 2020 if Chase didn’t opt out, if there were no pandemic and LSU had the entire offseason to prepare. I think with a healthy Brennan and Chase, LSU goes 7-3 that year.

Unfortunately, that’s all hypothetical. And the story of Brennan and LSU is just that — hypothetical.

It’s the end of an era that never really happened.

Jags elevate 5 players from practice squad before season finale vs. Colts

Danny Etling will officially be the Jags No. 2 QB Sunday against Indy after the team elevated him and six others from the practice squad.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they elevated six players from their practice squad Saturday for Week 18’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, and those players are as follows:

  • P Joseph Charlton
  • RB Nathan Cottrell
  • QB Danny Etling
  • WR Josh Hammond
  • OL Badara Traore
  • OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms

With all of the COVID-19 cases the team has endured the last few weeks (or instances that requires a player to quarantine), it was a given that they would be elevating a good amount of players for their season finale to fill out their roster. According to the team’s official site, there are nine players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list currently and a few of them are starters.

The most notable player placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list this week was backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, which explains the elevation of Danny Etling.

Punter J.K. Scott was placed on the Jags’ Reserve/COVID-19 list early in the week as well, which put the Jags in a predicament where they had to sign Joseph Charlton to the practice squad and elevate him to the active roster. The move is one that will give the Jags their second change at punter this season as the team’s original starter, Logan Cooke, was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Dec. 28 for a knee injury.

When the Jags take the field Sunday, they will also be without three offensive linemen in starters Brandon Linder and Cam Robinson, and one of their top backups on the unit in Will Richardson. That explains why the team elevated both Badara Traore and Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms, who were elevated last week as well alongside running back Nathan Cottrell.

Jags sign QB Danny Etling to practice squad

The Jags now have two quarterbacks on their practice squad after signing former New England Patriots draft selection Danny Etling.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have just three games left to be played, but that hasn’t stopped them from adding talent to the practice squad. On Monday, the team signed Danny Etling to their practice squad, giving them two quarterbacks on the unit when including Kyle Lauletta.

Etling, 27, was drafted in 2018 out of Louisiana State in the seventh round (No. 219 overall) by the New England Patriots. Since then, he’s been a journeyman quarterback, spending time with the Atlanta Falcons,  Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and most recently the Green Bay Packers. Many of those stops involved time on the practice squad and Etling has yet to register a pass in the regular season.

While with LSU, Etling finished his career with 4,586 passing yards and 27 touchdowns. His passing yards total ranks him eighth in school history, and his completion number of 325 ranks him ninth.

Packers release QB Danny Etling from practice squad

The Packers made one roster move on Monday, releasing QB Danny Etling from the practice squad.

With Jordan Love expected back on the active roster soon and room needed on the practice squad, the Green Bay Packers released quarterback Danny Etling on Monday.

Etling was signed to the practice squad last Tuesday after the Packers elevated quarterback Kurt Benkert to the active roster as a COVID-19 replacement for Love. Etling’s stay in Green Bay lasted all of six days.

Benkert will revert back to the practice squad on Tuesday.

With Love out, Benkert was the backup behind Aaron Rodgers on Sunday night against the Chicago Bears and kneeled down twice to end the game. It marked his first time being active in a regular-season NFL game.

Love has been on the COVID-19 reserve list for seven days. He will be the backup quarterback upon his return to the active roster.

Etling has been with six different NFL teams since being drafted in the sixth round in 2018.

Broncos make two changes to practice squad

Danny Etling had a short tenure on the Broncos’ practice squad.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton continues to tinker with the bottom of the team’s roster.

Denver released offensive guard Shaq Calhoun and quarterback Danny Etling from the practice squad on Tuesday, the team announced.

Calhoun was signed last month when the team needed more depth at guard because of multiple injuries at the position. Etling was signed just last weekend to provide emergency QB depth while Drew Lock was in COVID-19 protocol.

Lock is expected to return this week and the Broncos will once again have three quarterbacks: Teddy Bridgewater, Brett Rypien and Lock.

Denver placed outside linebacker Pita Taumoepenu on the practice squad/COVID-19 list and cornerback Duke Dawson on the practice squad/injured list last week. The Broncos clearing two spots on the practice squad by cutting Calhoun and Etling might be a sign that Taumoepenu and Dawson are close to returning.

The Broncos currently have three open spots on the practice squad.

Broncos add a quarterback, make several other roster moves

Broncos added some emergency depth at QB by signing Danny Etling to the practice squad. Denver also made several other roster moves.

The Denver Broncos signed a quarterback and made several other roster moves on Saturday, the team announced. Here’s a quick recap of the team’s recent transactions.

Report: Former LSU QB Danny Etling signs with the Denver Broncos

Danny Etling is Denver bound.

After spending time with the Seattle Seahawks, former LSU QB Danny Etling is on the move east to Denver, Colorado. According to his agent, the former Tigers gunslinger will be joining the Broncos. With the issues at quarterback, this move will provide the team with some depth.

Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver reports that isn’t finalized yet as he works through the entry protocols, but Etling will be a practice squad addition for the Broncos.

Etling has yet to throw a pass in the regular season but given the depth issues with Denver, it could happen at any time. As a member of the Tigers, Etling threw for 4,586 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 24 games. He arrived in Baton Rouge as a transfer after two years at Purdue.
