Daniel Ricciardo admits he might have to work his way back up from AlphaTauri if he wants to finish his career with a “fairytale ending” at Red Bull.

The Australian originally graduated from Toro Rosso in 2013 when he took over compatriot Mark Webber’s seat at Red Bull, before leaving for Renault in 2019. That was followed by a two-year stint at McLaren that ended with Ricciardo’s contract being terminated a year early, and he has since returned to Red Bull as third driver. He has long insisted that he’d only consider a race seat at a front-running team, but suggested he would drive for AlphaTauri in future if it would allow him to earn a promotion to Red Bull once again.

“This, for me, would be like the fairytale,” Ricciardo told ESPN. “Honestly, the fairytale ending (would be) to finish my career here if I could have it all my own way. But we’ll see. I’ll probably have to work my way up a little bit, but it’s really nice to be back here.”

ESPN reports Ricciardo is not currently in the frame for an AlphaTauri seat this season, and there is not currently an opening at Red Bull next year anyway as Sergio Perez remains under contract until the end of 2024.

Ricciardo will get his first taste of the RB19 next month when he completes a Pirelli tire test for Red Bull at Silverstone – in the days after the British Grand Prix at the same venue – and he previously told Sky Sports he wants to use that opportunity to show the team he has the ability to get the most out of its cars.

“I feel like there is still some unfinished business,” he said last month. “I’m continuing to do simulator. I’m going to jump in the car in July to get back behind the wheel. I’m sure that will really stimulate me and give me all those feels back. Naturally I’m going to put a bit of pressure on myself for that and try to remind the team that I can still do it. We’ll see where it goes.”

Daniel Ricciardo and Will Arnett are teaming up to provide alternate coverage of three Formula 1 races this year on ESPN, starting with the Canadian Grand Prix next weekend.

As reported by RACER at last year’s United States Grand Prix, in similar fashion to “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” — or Manningcast — that has run since 2021, “The Grandstand with Daniel Ricciardo and Will Arnett” is designed to offer running commentary and conversation about the ongoing race, including what ESPN describes as “an array of guests” during the show.

ESPN will produce the show in collaboration with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, with the first edition from Montreal featuring Ricciardo on-site and airing on ESPN2 while the traditional telecast will be on ABC.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1388]

“This is going to be a hoot!” Ricciardo said. “As you’d expect Will and I are going to have some fun with the show, but we’re hoping it just feels like you’re watching F1 with your mates. We will have some amazing guests, plenty of laughs and with some luck, bring fans another step closer to the sport I love so much. Buckle up America!”

As well as the Canadian race, ESPN has committed to two further telecasts in North America, with the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas on October 22 and the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 18 also getting the Ricciardo and Arnett treatment.

“As Formula 1’s popularity continues to grow in the United States, we’re pleased to provide fans with another way to enjoy the sport, and a way for new fans to learn more about it,” Kate Jackson, ESPN Vice President of production said. “Daniel’s effervescent personality will resonate on television, as will his hands-on knowledge.

“And we’re very excited to be working with Will. He will bring the perspective of a dedicated fan of F1 to the telecasts as well as his unique and humorous way of appreciating F1. It will be a great combination.”

Push for top F1 seat not “arrogant” insists Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo says his lack of interest in returning to Formula 1 with certain teams is “not coming from an arrogant place” after rediscovering his confidence at Red Bull.

McLaren opted to drop Ricciardo one year before the end of his contract in order to sign Oscar Piastri for this season, and the 33-year-old returned to Red Bull as third driver despite race seats being available at Haas and Williams at the time. After an extended break over the winter, Ricciardo says he’s finding the motivation to return to F1 is growing but he maintains he only wants a front-running seat.

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1388]

“It doesn’t scare me,” Ricciardo told Top Gear. “It’s always been like that. And I knew this was going to be a risk obviously removing myself from a seat. But I think it’s clear what I don’t want. I don’t want (just) any seat next year, as much as I think I want to be racing again. I don’t want to just start from zero, and kind of build my (F1) career from scratch.

“It’s not coming from an arrogant place. But I’m just past that. I don’t think that’s going to stimulate me or give me that second wind I’m looking for. So it makes the top seats even scarcer. But that’s where I know I will be able to perform at my best and thrive. That’s the sort of stuff I’m keeping my eyes on.”

And Ricciardo says his return to Red Bull has gone better than expected, both from a team integration point of view and the way it is helping him recover from such a tough spell at McLaren.

“Since Abu Dhabi (in 2022) I went home, and spent two months there. I then went to the USA, went to the Super Bowl. And I basically just did no race driver things for probably close to three months.

“But, the first day back at Red Bull in the simulator was the most fun I’ve ever had driving a simulator, which is crazy, especially because at this point in my career that’s normally the boring work. But Simon (Rennie) my engineer at the time at Red Bull, he’s running the sim now. So it was like we were back in the routine of 2018 and mate, I loved it. It took me a few laps to get going and once I did it all felt familiar again.

“I would honestly say in a day my confidence went from being probably pretty low to back at the levels I remember being at. It was a good day. And I think just having that time off just gave me a chance to, in a way, forget a little bit of the last two years. Just go in there with a fresh mind.”

Steiner hints door is open for Ricciardo talks over 2024 return to grid

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner hints he’d be willing to talk to Daniel Ricciardo about a future race seat after the Australian said he’s leaning towards wanting to return to Formula 1 in 2024.

Ricciardo opted against pursuing a vacancy at Haas once he had been released from his McLaren contract last year, preferring to take a season away from racing and joining Red Bull as third driver instead. On his first race weekend appearance, Ricciardo was quoted by ESPN as saying that he’s already thinking about a racing return next year.

“The signs are pointing towards getting back on the grid,” Ricciardo said. “I feel like that’s where I’m tracking in my head and a few of the habits that I’m having or doing is pointing towards that.

”It’s only been a few months but I think some itches have been scratched, so to speak. I’ve actually weirdly found that the days that I’ve had no schedule are the days when I’ve actually done training, and I’ve done things like I would before.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=3 category=1388]

Given the fact that Steiner was interested in speaking to Ricciardo last year before choosing Nico Hulkenberg to replace Mick Schumacher, the Haas team principal says Ricciardo’s previous snub hasn’t closed the door even if his current lineup takes priority.

“It’s a little bit early to speak about a driver change already for next year,” Steiner said. “So let’s see how we are doing with these drivers and, for sure, at some point maybe I speak with him but I cannot promise anything because if our two guys do a good job…

“But for sure, everybody is wanting to speak with Danny after a year off — maybe he knows again what he wants to do and he will be interesting for everybody in Formula 1. But at the moment I have a new driver this year that has done only two races, so I need to give him a little bit of a chance.”

Ricciardo’s current team boss Christian Horner says he has already seen signs of improvement from the 33-year-old after two tough years at McLaren appeared to impact his driving style.

“When he first turned up after Abu Dhabi — I think the problem is when you drive a car that obviously has its limitations, you adapt and you try and adjust to extract the maximum out of that car,” Horner said. “And it was clear when he came back, that he picked up some habits that we didn’t recognize as the Daniel that that had left us two or three years earlier.

“But having had time off over Christmas and so on and a chance to reset, when he’s come back and got into the 2023 work, he’s hit the ground running and I think he likes the feel of the car in the virtual world which seems to correlate well with what we’re seeing in the actual world. I think he’s desperate to get a run in the car at some point to validate that, but we’re certainly seeing him getting back to being far more reminiscent of the Daniel that we knew.”

Xavi Bonilla / IPA/Sipa USA

F1’s Daniel Ricciardo had so much fun driving Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at COTA

A once-in-a-lifetime ride.

Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo went for the ride of a lifetime Saturday at Circuit of the Americas, the Austin track which will host the United States Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 32-year-old McLaren driver from Australia was already having a great time embracing all things Texas this week, including busting out his southern accent impression. But this definitely has to be a major highlight of Ricciardo’s trip to the U.S.

He got behind the wheel of the 1984 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo once driven by the late Dale Earnhardt Sr., a hero of Ricciardo’s, and hit the track. With a massive smile on his face, Ricciardo rode around in the vintage car and even did a burnout on the track with it.

And Dale Earnhardt Jr. loved it too and tweeted: “I’m happy for Daniel. I’m also appreciative for how he celebrates my father. That makes a lot of dads family members and fans smile.”

Ricciardo’s unique ride around COTA all started as a bet between him and the head of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown, who owns the car as part of his personal collection. As Jalopnik previously noted, when Ricciardo joined his new F1 team, he and Brown wagered that if he could get a podium finish this season, he’d get to drive a car from Brown’s collection.

Then Ricciardo ended up winning the Italian Grand Prix in September, and a deal is a deal.

Going with the weekend’s theme, Ricciardo also has a Dale Earnhardt Sr.-inspired helmet:

F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo busted out his southern accent for U.S. Grand Prix weekend in Austin

Daniel Ricciardo went all out for the Formula 1 race in Texas.

Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo loves Austin, he loves the Longhorns and he loves Circuit of the Americas, the track where the biggest racing series in the world will compete this weekend in the United States Grand Prix.

He’s happy to be back for the first time in two years, and he’s going all-out for this Texas weekend.

All-out for the 32-year-old McLaren driver from Australia includes doing some interviews with a southern accent. Or, at least attempting to imitate one because Ricciardo’s impression of a southern accent is coming out a little more like a cross between a NASCAR TV broadcaster, like Darrell Waltrip, or Talladega Night‘s Ricky Bobby and Foghorn Leghorn.

And it’s hilarious. He’s even (almost) got Waltrip’s signature catchphrase “boogity, boogity, boogity” down.

Ricciardo ditched his attempted Texas/southern/Foghorn Leghorn accent midway through answering this question about why he loves being at COTA — though he was so distracted by his impression, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s apparent laughter off camera or both that he briefly forgot the question.

But that wasn’t the only time he did this accent impression. He also did an entire interview in a southern accent, as he spoke about his excitement about getting to drive Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s 1984 Wrangler Chevrolet Monte Carlo at the track this weekend.

In addition to being a NASCAR legend, the late Earnhardt Sr. is a hero of Ricciardo’s. And Ricciardo will drive the Monte Carlo after winning a bet with the head of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown, who has the car in his personal collection, per Jalopnik.

And of course, going all-in for the U.S. Grand Prix meant dressing the part, including showing up to the track in a cowboy hat and a bolo tie.

Clearly, regardless of how Ricciardo performs this weekend, he’s having the most fun at COTA.
