Nebraska announces new wide receivers coach

Shorts was a standout receiver under Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia from 2013-16.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have officially hired Daikiel Shorts Jr. as the new wide receivers coach. Shorts has Power Four coaching experience, having previously coached with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia and Houston.

“It is exciting to add Daikiel Shorts Jr. to our offensive staff. Daikiel is someone who has played for and coached with Coach Holgorsen, and Dana really trusts and believes in him. Daikiel is one of the best recruiters in the country, and he’s a great coach who is familiar with our system.”

Shorts spent the 2024 season as the Kentucky Wildcats’ wide receivers coach. The new coach says he is excited for a chance to coach with Matt Rhule and is looking forward to reuniting with Coach Holgorsen.

“I am extremely grateful for the chance to work for Coach Rhule at the University of Nebraska. When you walk into this place, you can feel the history and tradition associated with Nebraska Football and what it means to everyone inside the program and the fan base. It also means a lot for me to reconnect with Coach Holgorsen. He is a special person in my life, and I have learned a lot from him as a player and a coach.”

Shorts was a standout receiver under Holgorsen at West Virginia from 2013-16. He finished his collegiate career ranked fifth on the WVU career chart with 177 receptions and sixth with 2,263 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

Huskers agree to two-year extension with Dana Holgorsen

The Husker offensive coordinator is staying put for the next couple of years.

Nebraska offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen agreed to a two-year contract extension on Monday. The new deal will pay Holgorsen $1.2 million.

Holgorsen took over as the offensive coordinator and play-caller from Marcus Satterfield in mid-November. The Huskers clinched their sixth win under Holgorsen, as the offense showed improvement throughout the last three games.

Their best performance came in a 44-25 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. During that game, the Huskers had their highest point total since 2021, while their 473 yards of total offense was the second-highest output of the season.

Reports have stated that he is not expected to retain wide receivers coach Garret McGuire as part of his offensive staff.

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see how this affects the Nebraska offense. He brought a spark to the unit and will now have at least two full seasons to continue building. One must wonder who he will bring in as a wide receivers coach and what other staff changes will be made in the future.

Matt Rhule reveals larger role for freshman WR Quinn Clark

Nebraska football freshman Quinn Clark may get a chance to make an impact on Saturday.

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhuke indicated that freshman wide receiver Quinn Clark practiced with the top offensive units this week. He could have a chance to play on Saturday.

The freshman played in the season opener against UTEP. He was targeted once but did not have a catch. He was a dynamic high school player, recording 1,791 yards and 30 touchdowns in three seasons, according to Maxpreps.com.

Clark’s height is also intriguing. He is six-foot-five, 205 pounds. His athleticism and speed make for an explosive combination. Earlier in the week, Dana Holgorsen told the press that he had found a player in practice that could make an impact in Saturday’s game and Rhule confirmed on Thursday that Quinn Clark was the player in question.

Nebraska football must pull out all the stops as they aim to get that sixth win with two games remaining. Clark appears to be going up the depth chart, and it will be interesting to see if he will play a factor on Saturday.

Holgorsen challenging running backs in multiple areas

Dana Holgorsen wants to see more out of the running back position

Nebraska football offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen noticed several things in his first game with the program. The Huskers lost to the USC Trojans by a 28-20 margin, dropping to 5-5 on the season. Holgersen wanted to see a little bit more out of his running backs and noted that in his press conference on Tuesday.

The running back room combined for 119 rushing yards, with Emmett Johnson leading the way. He had ten carries for 55 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Dante Dowdell was the second on the day, with eight carries for 52 yards.

The Huskers’ running backs have struggled with explosiveness throughout the season. Being tentative in hitting holes has also been a problem for the position throughout the year. It will be interesting to see if the program can adjust the running back room or if the room has reached its ceiling for the year. The unit will have at least two more games to figure it out.

Holgorsen embarrassed by the blocking of wide receivers

Dana Holgorsen wants his receivers to be more physical.

Nebraska football offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen is making one specific point crystal clear to his wide receivers. Holgersen wants his receivers to block better, as he told the media in his press conference on Tuesday.

Saturday afternoon was the Huskers’ first game with Holgerson as offensive coordinator. The unit racked up 310 yards of offense, which broke down to 191 passing yards and 119 rushing yards. They averaged 4.9 yards per play, and recorded 19 first downs on 63 total plays.

Offensive production is certainly important. However, Holgerson wants to see Nebraska’s wide receivers take more care in blocking offensively.

“These guys (wide receivers) are big bodies. I’m like ‘Why are you not blocking worth a crap on the perimeter?’ Its embarassing.”

Blocking has been an issue for the Huskers’ wide receivers all year. Marcus Satterfield also indicated that it was a point of emphasis earlier in the year.

The program will have to do all of the little things right as they look to become bowl-eligible in their final two games of the season.

Expert score predictions: Nebraska vs. USC

Who will win between the Huskers and the Trojans?

Nebraska travels to California for a clash with the USC Trojans in the Los Angeles Coliseum. Both teams announced big changes to their offenses ahead of this matchup, making the outcome more unpredictable.

The Huskers changed offensive coordinators and play-callers, bringing in Dana Holgorsen to jump-start Nebraska’s offense. However, USC also made a change during the bye week, benching quarterback Miller Moss and starting sophomore UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava

Maiava played in all 14 games for the Rebels in 2023, leading the team to the Mountain West Championship, where they fell to Boise State. UNLV then played Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl but lost 49-36 after throwing 24 completions off 35 throws for 291 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions

He finished his freshman year completing 224 of 353 passes, averaging just over 220 passing yards, throwing 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions, and suffering only ten sacks across 14 games.

However, he also had run support at UNLV, with the Rebels racking up 2,429 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns. Maiava is a dual threat, breaking seven double-digit yard runs during the 14-game span.

UCLA’s Ethan Garbers showed that quarterback runs are another critical factor in getting by Nebraska’s defense. However, Maiava only has one season of play under his belt, which primarily consisted of facing Mountain West teams.

Now, he earns his first start as a Trojan against a Big Ten defense that, despite its struggles, still poses a threat to inexperienced quarterbacks. The Blackshirts stand with 25 sacks and nine interceptions while holding opponents to just over 19 points per game.

Also, adding Phil Snow as a defensive consultant could give Tony White support and help turn the defense around.

USC relies on the passing game but can produce on the ground when needed. Nebraska’s defense primarily shuts down running backs, excluding Indiana. So, the Huskers need to get to Maiava if they want to stop the pass. Bring the pressure, take away the first read, and force the Trojans to run.

With a shake-up finally occurring for Nebraska, USC can’t rely on the predictability aspect, as it’s hard to say what Dana Holgorsen will call from the playbook or even cook up.

He’s only been in Nebraska for less than two weeks, so it’s more than likely that Satterfield’s playbook is still present. But Holgorsen is calling the shots and could even rework a few of the plays to his liking.

However, unlike the Husker’s last three opponents, USC can’t foresee what Nebraska will do, which doesn’t help its defense. The Trojans allowed an average of around 22 points per game this season.

However, with Nebraska’s recent history of seeking the sixth win, it’s hard to give the Huskers the win here. USC has struggled in the fourth as of late, but it couldn’t have asked for a better team to get out of that stretch than Nebraska.

Score Prediction: USC 28, Nebraska 24

Cornhuskers Wire offers insight on Nebraska’s new offensive play-caller

A Nebraska analyst explains why the Huskers and Matt Rhule had to change offensive play-callers before playing USC. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

Earlier this week, Nebraska football announced that it will make a major offensive change ahead of the matchup with USC on Saturday. Former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen, who recently joined the Cornhuskers as an offensive consultant, will take over the team’s offensive play calling for the remainder of the season.

Holgorsen replaces Marcus Satterfield, who had served as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator since the start of the 2023 season. Satterfield will now solely serve as the team’s tight ends coach.

Following the announcement, Evan Bredeson of Cornhuskers Wire offered some perspective on the move.

“Matt Rhule had to make a change. I don’t know that any of us thought he would do something this drastic, especially considering how loyal he is to the guys on his staff. The fact that he made the change though is welcomed news. The offense had been regressing the last two years under Marcus Satterfield. Quarterback Dylan Raiola is playing worse now than he did at the start of the season, and if a staff change wasn’t made at the top of the offense, the chances of him hitting the portal was possible.

“With Holgorsen, I expect to see shorter passes designed to get the quarterback into rhythm early. Nebraska’s passing game had evolved to screen pass or deep shot. Nothing really in between. I also think we’ll see a lot more of the tight ends being involved in the passing game. Dana is known to have an affinity for using tight ends and the huskers actually have some depth at that position group and have not been utilizing it in any effective way this season.

“And they will run the football. Even though DH is an Air Raid guy, all of his top offenses always had a very good running game. Matt Rhule has said over and over again since arriving in Lincoln that he wants to be able to run the football consistently with power. The offense has simply not delivered on that front.”

USC takes on Nebraska at 1 p.m. Pacific Standard Time this Saturday.

Matt Rhule discusses Dylan Raiola’s reaction to the hiring of Dana Holgorsen

Dylan Raiola has put his trust in Matt Rhule and Dana Holgorsen.

Nebraska announced Dana Holgorsen as its offensive coordinator on Monday. Coach Matt Rhule held a press conference on Monday to discuss the impact this would have on the program. He was specifically asked about quarterback Dylan Raiola.

The freshman had a hot start to the season but has struggled a bit since then. He has recorded 1.921 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He has struggled in his last five games, as he has two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Raiola may get a bit of a reset with Holgorsen’s playcalling. Rhule discussed the quarterback’s reaction to the change during the press conference.

“Dylan trusts me and trusts the program. He just took it as ‘hey what are we doing today.’ He’s trying to get his back healthy. All the guys had a really positive reaction to it. It goes back to what I said last week, players need to play, players need to go make plays. If you watch on Saturdays, players have to go make plays. Dana (Holgorsen) and the staff will give the players the best opportunity to go make plays so we need the guys to make them. The whole play calling thing, we’ve tried to handle that, now go make some plays. Football is a game where players win games. We’ve got good players, we expect them to go win some games.”

The Huskers’ offense may take a slightly different look in the near future as they look to find something that can move Raiola and the unit in the right direction. It will be interesting to see how the offense functions as they take on the USC Trojans this coming Saturday. The kickoff time for the game is set for 3:00 p.m. CT and can be seen on Fox.

Nebraska makes big coaching change before USC game

Nebraska Cornhuskers coach Matt Rhule made a key coaching change before Saturday’s game against the USC Trojans. The Huskers are going for it.

After an off week last week, the USC Trojans (4-5) are preparing for a big matchup against new Big Ten Conference neighbor Nebraska (5-4). It’s a crucial game for USC football, given that the Trojans need two wins to gain bowl eligibility.

The Cornhuskers are led by head coach Matt Rhule, who is searching for answers following three straight losses including a 27-20 defeat against a struggling UCLA squad that was 2-5 at the time.

A big problem with Nebraska has been the offense, which has scored 20 or fewer points in each of its last four games, including seven points in two of the four games.

Thus, on Monday, Rhule announced a key change that will affect the upcoming game against the Trojans. Former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen will be taking over as the team’s offensive coordinator, confirmed by Matt Zenitz on X/Twitter.

Holgorsen previously worked as an offensive consultant for the team and will now replace Marcus Satterfield, whose responsibility will be as tight end coach.

How much this change will impact the matchup against USC on Saturday is yet to be seen, but an already tough opponent will be getting tougher with the change. Holgorsen’s ability to field high-octane offenses at past coaching stops suggests that Nebraska is getting an upgrade in offensive tactics.

Nebraska names Dana Holgorsen offensive coordinator and play-caller for the remainder of the season

Nebraska Football has a new offensive coordinator.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have made offensive consultant Dana Holgorsen the team’s offensive coordinator and play-caller. Coach Matt Rhule confirmed this on Monday during his weekly press conference.

Holgorsen joined the Nebraska football program last week. He was previously a defensive assistant on the TCU Horned Frogs staff, having taken the position this summer.

Holgorsen will bring a variety of offensive experiences to Nebraska football. He was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders before taking over the entire role in 2007. He has also served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Houston Cougars and Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Nebraska offense needs a jolt. They currently rank 96th in total offense, averaging 354.1 yards per game, and 99th in scoring offense, with an average of 23.6 points per game.

Holgorsen is known for his air raid offense. The air raid is a spread, no-huddle offense that relies heavily on the passing game. The hope is that his track record of success will immediately impact the Huskers.

Former offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield will remain on staff as the team’s tight ends coach. Head coach Matt Rhule has expressed his desire for Holgorsen to stay on staff after this season.

The Huskers are getting ready to take on the USC Trojans on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT.
