Bellator 282 post-event facts: Johnny Eblen the newest undefeated champion

Johnny Eblen joined the short list of fighters to win a Bellator title with an undefeated record at Bellator 282.

The Bellator event schedule resumed Friday with Bellator 282, which took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and saw a new champion crowned in the main event.

[autotag]Johnny Eblen[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) captured the middleweight title with a dominant sweep over [autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] (49-8-2 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) by unanimous decision, becoming the eighth 185-pound champion in company history.

‘The Alpha Ginger’ Spike Carlyle pulls off improbable comeback at Bellator 272

“The Alpha Ginger” Spike Carlyle came back from the brink of defeat on multiple occasions to submit Dan Moret in Round 3.

[autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] made quite the first impression in his Bellator debut Friday.

On the Bellator 272 prelims, Carlyle (13-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) took on fellow UFC alumnus [autotag]Dan Moret[/autotag] and pulled off an improbable comeback. Carlyle rallied from the brink of defeat on multiple occasions to technically submit Moret (15-7 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) with a rear-naked choke at 2:58 mark of Round 3 in a grueling battle.

Both fighters landed shot after shot through the first two rounds, but Carlyle absorbed the brunt of the damage. Entering Round 3, Carlyle was down 20-18 on all three judges’ scorecards.

However, he dug deep, reversed a late takedown from Moret, ended up on his opponent’s back, and put him to sleep with a rear-naked choke – much to the delight of the Mohegan Sun crowd.

“I feel like dog crap,” Carlyle said after the fight. “I don’t feel good at all right now, but I had to dig deep. This was not my power, that’s for sure. That was supernatural what just happened right there.”

“… I remember watching some of his interviews leading to the Goiti Yamauchi fight. He said he’s never tapped, he will never tap, and that’s true. That son of a b*tch didn’t tap.”

Check out the highlights below:

Bellator 272 took place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card aired on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Spike Carlyle fills in on short notice to fight Dan Moret at Bellator 272

“The Alpha Ginger” is back on the big stage as Spike Carlyle will meet Dan Moret at Bellator 272.

“The Alpha Ginger” is back on the big stage.

Three-fight UFC veteran [autotag]Spike Carlyle[/autotag] is filling in for Ricardo Seixas and has accepted a short-notice 160-pound contract weight fight against [autotag]Dan Moret[/autotag] next Friday at Bellator 272 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., according to promotion officials. The reason for Seixas’ withdrawal is unclear.

Carlyle, 28, was 8-1 when he made his UFC debut on February 29, 2020, winning by first-round TKO over Aalon Cruz. Carlyle’s next two UFC fights that year were unanimous decision losses to Billy Quarantillo and Bill Algeo. Since departing the UFC, Carlyle (12-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) has won three consecutive fights – two submissions and a knockout. He most recently KO’d J.J. Ambrose in the second round last month at Cage Warriors 130 in his hometown of San Diego.

Moret (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) is coming off his Bellator debut win this past April, a split decision over Goiti Yamauchi. That marked Moret’s second consecutive victory since losing all three of his UFC appearances in 2018 and 2019.

Bellator 272 adds Jay Jay Wilson’s lightweight debut vs. Alfie Davis, three other fights

Four fights have been added to Bellator 272.

[autotag]Jay Jay Wilson[/autotag] has his next test scheduled and it’s at a new weight class.

Recent struggles on the scales have forced Wilson (8-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA), a top featherweight contender, up a division to lightweight where he’ll face [autotag]Alfie Davis[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) at Bellator 272. The event takes place Friday, Dec. 3 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card airs on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

In addition, a welterweight battle between former Oklahoma State University wrestling standout [autotag]Kyle Crutchmer[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) and former UFC fighter [autotag]Oliver Enkamp[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) has been added to the card.

A promotion official informed MMA Junkie of the two bookings Monday and confirmed two previously-announced bouts: [autotag]Johnny Eblen[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Collin Huckbody[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), and [autotag]Dan Moret[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Ricardo Seixas[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA), the latter of which was first reported by TSN.

Wilson, 24, missed weight for the third time in four fights when he came in 4.4 pounds heavy for his scheduled Bellator 265 bout vs. Adam Borics in August. As a result, the fight was canceled and Wilson announced shortly thereafter his move to 155 pounds.

Despite his struggles on the scales, Wilson hasn’t struggled to succeed inside the cage. Undefeated as a professional, Wilson has wins over Pedro Carvalho and Tywan Claxton among others.

As for Davis, the United Kingdom-based fighter is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Alexander Shabliy at Bellator 259 in May. The defeat snapped a four-fight winning streak.

With the additions, the Bellator 272 lineup includes:

  • Champ Sergio Pettis vs. Kyoji Horiguchi – for featherweight title
  • Jeremy Kennedy vs. Emmanuel Sanchez
  • Johnny Eblen vs. Collin Huckbody
  • Josh Hill vs. Jared Scoggins
  • John de Jesus vs. Keoni Diggs
  • Killys Mota vs. Mike Hamel
  • Levan Chokheli vs. Vinicius de Jesus
  • Tommy Espinosa vs. Jornel Lugo
  • Bobby King vs. Alexander Shabliy
  • Dan Moret vs. Ricardo Seixas
  • Alfie Davis vs. Jay Jay Wilson
  • Kyle Crutchmer vs. Oliver Enkamp

Bellator keeps its 2021 rolling Friday, and a former light heavyweight champion will try to get back on track at the top of the bill.

Bellator 256 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former light heavyweight champion and current heavyweight champ [autotag]Ryan Bader[/autotag] (27-6 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Lyoto Machida[/autotag] (26-10 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) in the opening round of Bellator’s 205-pound tournament. The two first fought in the UFC nearly nine years ago, and Machida won by knockout. This time, Bader is a -300 favorite at BetMGM in the rematch, and our 12 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are taking him unanimously – one of three 12-0 nods on the main card.

In the co-feature, former UFC title challenger [autotag]Liz Carmouche[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) is a -185 favorite against former Invicta FC women’s flyweight [autotag]Vanessa Porto[/autotag] (22-8 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), and Carmouche is a near-unanimous pick on the main card at 11-1 from our staff members.

Also on the main card, our only truly contentious fight from a picks standpoint takes place at lightweight with [autotag]Adam Borics[/autotag] (16-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) just a -125 favorite against [autotag]Jeremy Kennedy[/autotag] (16-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Borics has a slim 7-5 picks lead.

Our second unanimous nod is former UFC title challenger [autotag]Cat Zingano[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who is a huge -800 favorite against promotional newcomer [autotag]Olivia Parker[/autotag] (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a women’s featherweight bout. Zingano, not surprisingly given the odds, is a 12-0 pick.

And to open the main card, our third 12-0 unanimous pick is [autotag]Goiti Yamauchi[/autotag] (25-4 MMA, 11-3 BMMA) in a lightweight bout against [autotag]Dan Moret[/autotag] (14-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). Yamauchi is a -400 betting favorite.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Bader (64 percent), Carmouche (69 percent), Borics (72 percent), Zingano (90 percent) and Yamauchi (88 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Dan Moret vs. Goiti Yamauchi rounds out Bellator 256 main card

The Bellator 256 main card lineup is set.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Bellator 256 has added a fifth and final main card fight.

Lightweights [autotag]Dan Moret[/autotag] and [autotag]Goiti Yamauchi[/autotag] will face off on the April 9 card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., a promotion official told MMA Junkie on Friday.

Additionally, Moret (14-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) has signed an exclusive multi-fight deal with Bellator. The MMA Lab product was released from the UFC in mid-2019 after three straight losses, but rebounded at UAE Warriors 9 months later when he defeated Anton Kuivanen by TKO. The fight against Yamauchi (25-4 MMA, 11-3 BMMA) is his promotional debut.

As for Yamauchi, the longtime contender missed weight ahead of a scheduled fight in December against Nate Andrews. Yamauchi tipped the scales 6.8 pounds over the lightweight limit and the fight was removed from Bellator 254. The miss was the second time in a row Yamauchi came in heavy.

Despite his woes on the scales, Yamauchi is No. 3 in the Bellator lightweight rankings and has won six of his most recent seven fights. Victories in that stretch include Daron Cruickshank, Saad Awad and Daniel Weichel. His only loss during that period came against Michael Chandler.

With the addition, the Bellator 256 lineup includes:

MAIN CARD (Showtime, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Ryan Bader vs. Lyoto Machida
  • Liz Carmouche vs. Vanessa Porto
  • Adam Borics vs. Jeremy Kennedy
