Notre Dame’s botched OC search brings alleged Reinsdorf quote to mind

Notre Dame is reminding Chicago sports fans of a familiar face.

Right now, Notre Dame fans understandably are miffed at how their program’s offensive coordinator search went down.

By refusing to deal with the $2.8 million buyout in Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig’s contract, Notre Dame showed its hand in what it would and wouldn’t do to fill the position vacated by Tommy Rees.

The Irish ended up promoting from within and gave [autotag]Gerad Parker[/autotag] the job. By then, it was too late to change many Irish fans’ belief that the university’s higher-ups are not serious about bringing another national championship to South Bend.

This drama brings to mind a quote allegedly once uttered by Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. While appearing on Dan Le Batard’s podcast in 2019, former Miami Marlins president David Samson said the following:

“I was 32 years old, just in baseball for my first of 18 years. He said, ‘You know what, here’s my best advice to you: Finish in second place every single year. Because your fans will say, “Wow, we’ve got a shot, we’re in it.” But there’s always the carrot left. There’s always one more step to take.’ “

Reinsdorf denied ever giving this advice, but if he did, it wouldn’t surprise many Bulls and White Sox fans. Especially in recent years, Reinsdorf has been accused of not being serious about winning and instead being focused on saving money. One column by Chicago sports media personality Laurence Holmes published just this week questions Reinsdorf’s motives.

Recent inaction by both the Bulls and White Sox have disillusioned fans beyond belief. A struggling Bulls team was one of only two not to make a move at the NBA’s trade deadline, opting in favor of the continuity preached by the front office. Also, the Bulls have paid the luxury tax only once in franchise history, and they weren’t going to do it again by addressing glaring roster needs last offseason.

While the Sox did give out the richest contract in franchise history in the offseason (a laughable $75 million for Andrew Benintendi), they failed to address holes in right field and at second base. Their other free-agent signee, starting pitcher Mike Clevinger, is under investigation for domestic violence, and they didn’t sign anyone off the scrap heap as insurance in case Clevinger is suspended.

All ranting about Chicago sports aside, is it possible, dare we say likely, that [autotag]Jack Swarbrick[/autotag] and his bosses at Notre Dame are subscribing to a similar philosophy? Are they content to be just good enough and thus string fans along? When you show you’re not willing to spend the money necessary to get to the next level, it’s hard to change the narrative to anything else. Notre Dame’s reputation is set and not in a good way.

To not lure the best available coaching talent when you easily can will not help Notre Dame’s alleged quest to become a national title contender. Eventually, recruits, coaches and fans will see right through what’s really going on, and they’ll realize they’re better off taking their business elsewhere.

Notre Dame might like to bill itself as a school with a premier football program, but it’s not acting like one right now. The sooner it realizes this, the sooner people will stop using the program as leverage or a stepping stone or to a bigger program with more recent success.

Irish fans don’t want to see that carrot dangled in front of them. They want it fed to them, and they want it to taste good. Is there any chance Notre Dame’s administration will allow that to happen anytime soon? Chances are it will not, just like Reinsdorf will not with the fans of his teams.

Watch: Myles Garrett shows his toe is fine on the Le Batard Show

The superstar has fun during Super Bowl week.

Cleveland Browns fans anxiously awaited news last week when Myles Garrett limped off the field during the Pro Bowl games. It was quickly reported that X-Rays were negative during the event. The next day it came out that it was just a dislocated toe and didn’t require surgery or a lengthy recovery for the superstar pass rusher.

During Super Bowl media week Garrett was on the Dan Le Batard Show and he let it loose and carried a man off the set with no issues. It just shows Browns fans the injury was nothing to worry about and it was fun to see him having a good time.

Questions about Ryan Fitzpatrick’s rumored waterslide injury turned awkward in call with Dan Le Batard

This video is both perfect and SO uncomfortable.

Over the course of his 17 NFL seasons, Ryan Fitzpatrick was regarded as among the league’s more jovial personalities. After all, this was the guy who borrowed DeSean Jackson’s clothes just to make a press conference more fun.

But there are some subjects that Fitzpatrick isn’t willing to joke about, and The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz unintentionally hit that topic during Wednesday’s call with the former NFL quarterback. Let this be known now: Ryan Fitzpatrick does not like to discuss waterslides and possible injuries on said waterslides.

Last year, a caller into 106.7 The Fan in D.C. claimed that he witnessed Fitzpatrick get hurt during a trip to a waterpark. And while there was virtually no credibility to the caller’s claim, The Le Batard Show crew figured it would be funny to at least get Fitzpatrick’s take on the subject.

Fitzpatrick, though, just wasn’t feeling that line of questioning at all.

With the first question, Fitzpatrick basically “no commented” Stugotz. And he really did not enjoy the follow-up questions. Again, Le Batard thought it would be all in good fun — just look at how he was dressed as Kane! But the entire interview was so awkward at that point that they just let Fitzpatrick end his call rather than let the uncomfortable exchange drag on.

NFL fans had plenty of thoughts on the whole call. Also, Fitzpatrick didn’t exactly convince viewers that his career did not end from a waterslide injury.

Stan Van Gundy, the last person to actually coach Zion Williamson in a NBA game, believes the discussion about the superstar’s relocation to New York is not only premature, it’s indicative of false hopes created by the Knicks and the organization’s continued “arrogance.” “It’s possible,” he said of Williamson going to the Knicks. “But listen. The Knicks have this thing and it’s amazing. No matter how many times people have proven they don’t want to play for the Knicks, the Knicks have this idea that everybody in the league wants to play for New York,” Van Gundy told ‘The Dan Le Batard Show.’ “Now when is the last time it actually happened that somebody actually came and tried to get their way to New York? Like, never in the last 20 years? But still the Knicks and the Knicks fans think everybody is trying to get to the Knicks. I’m not saying (Zion) won’t end up there — there’s all kinds of ways people can end up somewhere — but this idea that everybody wants to be a New York Knick. I mean if that were the case then they wouldn’t be as bad as they’ve been for the last 20 years.”

More on this storyline

Van Gundy, who was fired by the Pelicans in June, is skeptical. Williamson, who hasn’t played all season following foot surgery, is eligible for an extension in the summer. As Van Gundy noted, no player has turned down a max extension coming off his rookie deal. “Yes, the league has changed. Yes, if a player like Zion decides he wants to force his way out and go to New York — assuming New York has anything that New Orleans would want — then he may go there. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Van Gundy said. “He’s up for an extension this summer. Even though he will have only played 85 games in three years, we’ve seen it with Joel Embiid and other people. No one yet has passed on signing the extension. No one yet. It’s too lucrative. So he’s first got to sign. And then it normally takes a year or two before people are forcing themselves somewhere else. So I think we’re a little bit premature on all of this. And I don’t know what the Knicks would have that New Orleans would jump at right now. I just don’t. Who would they want? Evan Fournier?” -via New York Daily News / February 26, 2022
However, another former member of the Pelicans came out with his own explanation of the Zion situation. Stan Van Gundy, who was the team’s coach last year, shared his insight on Zion Williamson’s situation in The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz podcast. ‘Zion at times can certainly be detached. When he’s playing I didn’t think he was detached at all last year. But when he’s not playing – off-season, breaks, injured, whatever – I think he just wants to be by himself. I think he doesn’t like not playing, he wants to be by himself and get ready, that’s a big part of it. And at that point all he wants to do is get back and play to re-attach.’ -via Clutch Points / February 25, 2022
Andrew Lopez: CJ McCollum on Zion: “Leave the young fella alone. He’s trying to rehab in peace, trying to get himself ready to come back. We spoke and I’ll spoke to him later this week or next week.” Added: “He’ll be healthy eventually and when he is we’ll welcome him with open arms.” -via Twitter @_Andrew_Lopez / February 24, 2022

Dan Le Batard’s teary goodbye to ‘Highly Questionable’ was also a great tribute to his dad

Is it dusty in here?

Dan Le Batard’s long and successful run at ESPN came to an official close on Monday as he said goodbye to his popular radio show The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz on ESPN Radio and then later said another emotional goodbye to his long-running TV show, Highly Questionable.

Le Batard’s goodbye to his TV show, which lasted for almost a decasde, was especially poignant and beautiful as he took the time to explain just how cool and special it was to host a TV show with his dad, Papi.

You’re going to want to take five minutes and watch this and chances are you might get a little emotional, too.

What a run for Dan and his dad:

Pretty great.

‘Dan Le Batard Show’ ends on ESPN by playing George Michael’s ‘Freedom’

It’s their final show on ESPN Radio.

On Monday, the sports radio world bid farewell to The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz on ESPN Radio, with the popular show leaving the Worldwide Leader’s airwaves and a new schedule — which includes Mike Greenberg’s show moving into the 10 AM ET timeslot — starting.

The hilarious and irreverent show went out in its final minutes by playing George Michael’s Freedom! ’90, perhaps a not-so-subtle message to ESPN on the way out.

Then? No special goodbyes, just chatter as they hit the end of the hour, perhaps a fitting ending to the show that started on local radio and went national in 2013.

Tributes from people all over ESPN poured in:

[jwplayer Gdk4KxGz-q2aasYxh]

Here are the changes to the ESPN Radio schedule after Dan Le Batard’s show ends

Some changes will be made.

Dan Le Batard will be exiting ESPN in January, as it was announced on Thursday.

That means The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz will have its final episode on January 4, and there are changes that will be made to the ESPN Radio schedule that were announced along with the Le Batard news, which we’ve detailed below.

Not a ton is changing from the last time we wrote about this: Le Batard’s show occupied the 10 a.m. to noon spot, which reduced the show by an hour from its previous time.

But here’s what the new schedule will look like, per ESPN:

ESPN announces Dan Le Batard will leave the network in January 2021

Fan-favorite ESPN personality Dan Le Batard is moving on.

Veteran ESPN commentator and radio host Dan Le Batard will be leaving the company to pursue a new opportunity in January, ESPN announced on Thursday, after coming to a mutual agreement to part ways.

The final edition of The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz will air on January 4th. Le Batard will also make his final appearance on ESPN’s Highly Questionable on that day, but ESPN plans to continue the show with a different host following Le Batard’s exit.

Le Batard has long been one of ESPN’s most outspoken personalities, and he recently made headlines in November by pledging to pay the salary of Chris Cote, a producer who had been laid off by ESPN last month.

In his farewell message, Le Batard assured fans of his show that he’ll be back “soon enough” on a different platform.

Via ESPN:

“In short, thank you, Disney and ESPN, for a quarter century of absurd blessings. To our loyal army of concerned fans, and to everyone who walked along and played an instrument in our Marching Band to Nowhere, know that it is a very exciting time for us, not a sad one. And that you’ll be hearing our laughter again soon enough.”

Fans and media members showed support for Le Batard on Twitter.

Dan Le Batard says he’ll personally pay salary for producer laid off by ESPN

What a good deed.

Chris Cote, one of the producers of ESPN’s The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, was among those let go by the network in a round of layoffs this week, which was criticized publicly by former ESPN legend Bob Ley on Twitter.

Cote tweeted on Sunday about the news, thanking ESPN management and the show for the years he worked there.

But on Wednesday, that was reversed, thanks to Le Batard himself.

The host announced he was hiring Cote as a “personal assistant” and that he would actually give the producer a raise.

There was much rejoicing at the news when he announced it:

This is quite the good deed.

Dan Le Batard calls out Roger Goodell for NFL hypocrisy: ‘You can save your empty BS statement’

“Your league already made its statement, dude.”

Dan Le Batard has never been one to shy away from speaking out about politics despite ESPN’s policies.

And on Monday morning, he delivered another impassioned, emotional speech on his radio show about what he and the rest of the world saw in recent days with the protests over the death of George Floyd turning violent.

“You can’t believe the things that you’re watching,” he said in one clip you’ll hear below. “You don’t know what’s real and what’s not real. And, it just … It’s heartbreaking.”

He also turned his ire to the NFL’s much-roasted statement and commissioner Roger Goodell.

“Lord knows, he said, “too many — TOO MANY, too many — black people recognize the feeling of being suffocated by America’s armed authority. So, Roger Goodell, you can save your empty BS statement on behalf of the NFL. Your league already made its statement, dude. You’ve been making it for more than three years. You’re not allowed to be the first voice to the public relations when you’ve been the last one to the relations.”
